@Fry09294 FOV is not great coming from a Index or Quest 3, but it is adequate and the OLED blacks, rich colors, and high resolution panels make up for it (for me). Display brightness is mediocre, and something I will definitely touch more on in my full review. The brightness is good enough, but it is similar to FOV where it leaves some to be desired. I am currently running my Beyond at 65 brightness and 70 fan speed which is bright enough for me to feel satisfied, and as dark as possible so I can avoid the effects from persistence (which I definitely notice), which is the reason I run the dispalys at 65% brightness instead of 100%. That being said, like many other reviewers have said, you adapt and adjust to the lower brightness levels, and to be honest it's probably better to be looking at something not as bright, and running the displays at a lower brightness level also lowers heat. I want to end this by saying the OLED panels add a ton of value regarding brightness levels because you are seeing actual blacks, so the contrast is what makes up for those lower brightness levels as well and makes it feel a lot better and more realistic overall.
Hey, my IPD is absolutely 62 but I’m wondering if I should put it at 61 or 60 after hearing your experience and tips from the discord. Support hasn’t been much help and it’s pretty time sensitive so I’m very curious and concerned, thank you.
@kdh_yt if you've used the Valve Index, a lot of people say they go -1 or -2 from the Index, so if you used 62 on the Index then 61 or 60 would be ideal from my experience. However, there have been people who have stuck with the face scan IPD given and haven't had issues, so it's an incredibly subjective discussion, and you simply need to do what you believe is best, based on the research you have done. The good news is that if your IPD is wrong, Bigscreen will help you the entire way until you get it right. Getting the Beyond in your hands is step 1, step 2 is determining if you need adjustments. If not, great! If you do need adjustments, then it will only be another couple of weeks before you have something that fits perfectly for you.
Thank you so much, because of your advice and the two on discord I changed it to 61, although they sent that email out a long time ago. Not sure if I’m “too late.” But thank you very much.
I almost bought a BigScreen Beyond, but then I bought 2 Quest 3’s instead. The form factor and display quality of the Beyond is revolutionary, but too many important features were sacrificed to achieve that. Hopefully they do well enough to bring a sequel product with more robust features, even if it means sacrificing on the size just a tiny bit.
I agree, I think the small form factor is great, but I'd be ok adding another 100 grams to get larger displays and lenses for a larger sweet spot and better FOV.
Man I really hope mine comes without any face cushion issues, ipd issues, pixel issues, or any other issues. It really seems like I'm rolling the dice with ordering this headset.
Their facial scan tries to get you close (if not perfect at times), but sometimes people will have to make adjustments. The cool thing is that these adjustments are free and the Bigscreen team seem to know what they're doing in this regard, so it's an easy process if you do need adjustments. The downfall is the further wait times. I also hope you, and everyone, receives a perfect unit for their face, but it's tough to get perfect on the first try currently, so be prepared mentally to make some adjustments. Just know that once adjustments are made, the experience is worth it.
They just mailed me a IPD Discovery Unit, the app said i was 69mm way too big, swapped for a 67mm still too big. Had eyes measured professionally and I'm a 61.5. So they just sent the unit to dial it in. i have to upgrade to my GPU to at least a 4080 I think because I have to run it half resolution, so out of the box it's worse than my hp reverb g2. Plus have to figure out audio still. The G2 is taken for granted for $500
@@DerekIwasiuk That's unfortunate about your IPD issue, some struggle to find the perfect IPD, and some get it right the first time - it's just the way it is with custom items. I'm using a 3080 and can push games just fine. Yes, better hardware would be nice, but it gets the job done. The audio strap is pretty nice, but yeah, finding a solid audio solution can be tough otherwise - this should have been known when purchasing the HMD though right? The G2 is great, but the Beyond will still have better resolution, better tracking, MUCH lighter which increases comfort - plus the custom molded facial interface is nice to have, and the OLED displays are absolutely beautiful for VR and makes things feel so much more immersive. I hope you'll be happy with your unit once things are figured out. It takes a moment to appreciate it, and I was using mine for a week or two before putting back on my Quest 3 and Index and realizing how great the Beyond is at many things.
nice!! want one too - talking seat position. I am sitting more far away from the the wheel more like my real Sim Wheel is at, makes me more comfortable sitting a bit back.. doing that is a little complicated (Iracing replay - there is a button for cam, must be cockpit view than you can set x y z - and save it as default)
Oh interesting! I actually never had this issue and feel fine in the default position in most cars. Actually, the only car I find myself having issues with is the new Audi GT3, it seems the steering rack wants to sit at an angle, so I need to shift my body position a little, then set cam view, and then things will look lined up proper when I go back to a neutral position. Otherwise, I am comfortable in every other car and I only ever adjust vertical height in the Blackbox. I totally understand wanting the perspective and wheel to line up with your real wheel, but I felt they are close enough where I don't really think about it. Vertical position seems to matter more for me, personally.
Great video! Do you need base stations with the Bigscreen Beyond for sim racing, and if so, 1 or 2 base stations? Where would you place those base stations around your rig? Thanks! :)
Thanks for the kind words! 🙏 Yeah base stations are necessary for the BB to work. You'll want 2 base stations to ensure you won't lose tracking. 1 can work, but you'll more than likely have tracking issues at some point when turning your head or touching your face to get an itch or wiping off sweat. Since I am in the rig so much, I have both of my base stations in front of me. One to the left and the other to the right of me.
I am about to get into VR specifically for simracing. I have tried the hp g2 and felt really good immersion, but the clarity was really bad. Given that I am still new to the VR I am not sure of getting the Beyond, just because the final price for me (Italy based) is close to 1.6k. So before spending so much money on something that I cannot resell, and a refund costs 200 anyway, I was thinking of some more entry level stuff like the Pico 4 and Quest 3. Regarding the Quest 3, my only doubt is the connection and artefacts, in your initial impressions you mentioned that you wouldn't use it for simracing due to this reason, do you think it's really that bad even if wired via usb-c? If so what would be a good choice for me? I am not looking for something super low budget, but rather something decent not to expensive, so lower than 1k. From the little testing with the hp, I really noticed the lack of clarity and the little sweetspot and maybe some glare (like if the lenses where not clean).
Hey thanks for stopping by. VR pairs very well with sim racing, and I don't think I'd be able to race without VR these days. The Quest 3 is a very easy recommendation because it's cheap, and has fantastic lenses so you get great image clarity and minimal glare. The downside is the increased latency, compression, and overall poor execution of a VR implementation with all of the loops and hoops you must go through to get things working well, especially if you have a mid level PC and are not using a 4090 with the latest CPU chipset. The people suggesting a Quest 3 are people who either have not tried anything else, or have not tried anything better. There are many people who use the Quest 3 for sim racing, so it's a viable option, but if you are certain you will enjoy VR and you want to primarily sim race in VR, then I just cannot recommend it, and I would still guide people in the direction of a Valve Index Kit, or perhaps another dedicated PCVR headset. The G2 I have not used, so I cannot personally discuss much about it, but the sweet spot isn't great in the Beyond either, so if you didn't enjoy the G2, you may not enjoy the Beyond either in that regard. We are at a weird time in the VR space regarding PCVR headsets. There are many good options, but it's such a subjective discussion that it's difficult to suggest a single HMD, because there are so many options now. Varjo, Pimax, Valve, Vive, all are solid options, it just depends on your desires, what you can afford, and what your PC can handle.
Using as an example, closing your eyes a little when seeing lights at night and creating a glow or is it more like wearing glasses and creating a circular reflection like when recording with an SLR camera? And compared to quest 2 is the sweet spot similar or but in the beyond?
The glare depends on so many things that it's tough to give an exact answer. It can come in the form of whiteish globs of light over most of your vision, or just specific places like the bottom 1/4 of the lenses, or barely any noticable glare at all if you have a nice evenly lit scene. The glare is more noticeable in the Beyond than the Quest 2, but it's a different kind of glare as well since these are pancake instead of fresnel lenses. I don't have my Quest 2 anymore so I cannot compare directly, but I'd imagine the Quest 2 to have a little more wiggle room in that sweet spot than the Beyond has. The Beyond really does have a tiny sweet spot, but discussing the sweet spot is pointless, because their entire design philosophy is to get you in that sweet spot immediately with their custom molded design to fit your exact face shape.
@@ThisKory pfff now I get why is more use for Simulation tha vr gaming, my dream VR system have the spec of the beyond but with full sweetspot and fovea eye track tracking, probably more like vision pro oled but half the price you now, and I also read you need to scan it with you iphone or someon iphone with the 3D specs and have one steam tracker no
Hi Kory, Please can You compare this VR to the Varjo Aero headset? I would like to buy Varjo for simracing only and all reviews said that it is the best choice. So I would like to know if You can compare it and tell me which one would you choose for simracing. Thank You a lot.
Hey there! The Varjo is definitely a good headset, but I don't think it's worth it for sim racing. It's still very good, but I wouldn't personally invest in it these days, and I would instead go for a Beyond. VR is very much a subjective item, so you need to think about what you desire. Most people lean towards FOV, and the Beyond doesn't have amazing FOV but you don't need wild FOV for sim racing since you're looking forward 99% of the time and can hear and see cars in mirrors if they are next to you. That's just one single example, and in the end it depends on what you desire out of lenses, display types, FOV, tracking type, comfort, size, weight, audio solutions, and many more subjective decisions that matter to you. I personally prefer the 127 gram Beyond over the Varjo which weighs like 6x as much. It's going to be more comfy for longer sessions, and it's still cheaper than a Varjo, even after buying Base Stations and Controllers if you want to play other VR games.
On the discord someone mentioned that boosting brightness, to the point that black becomes gray, was a way to remove glare. What do you think about that trade off, is it worth it to you?
Absolutely not. Not only does this negate the point of the OLED panels, but when you increase the brightness on these displays you start to see persistence, which is basically motion blur. Anything higher than 100% brightness and the motion blur is too much in the Beyond (for me). I've read the opposite where people lower their brightness to lower the glare. I personally use 65 brightness and that works for me, but some people said they use closer to 0 brightness and it helps with glare a bit. 0 brightness is surprisingly manageable, but it does look like you're wearing sunglasses so bright environments won't look as natural. I understand the idea of increasing brightness to lower glare, since glare is mostly seen during high contrast scenes, but then you start to uncover other problems regarding persistence, more heat from the displays, and higher fan noise levels because of it. This is something I'll discuss in details in my full review video. This is an interesting HMD and it definitely has its quirks, but I'm happy with it after understanding the headset more.
The brightness they are referring to isn't the peak white level that will introduce more persistent. Instead they are referring to raising the black floor, so absolute black will now be gray. I personally wouldn't choose this as I highly value the black level and dark scene detail. I'll take glare instead.
@@808jonnysmith Ah I understand. This makes more sense, but still negates the point of the OLED panels which is something I would not want to do personally. Thank you for sharing the details!
Can you share your gpu and cpu spec? I have 3080 10gb 13600k and I assume I am way below spec to have an enjoyable 90hz experience for sim racing. To be honest because of my spec I am also hesitant to buy a quest 3. For context, I have a cv1 and the max I pull is Super sampling 2.5 on older games and 2.0 in ACC. Impossible to go higher because the card simply don't have enough vram.
You''ll be fine. I have a 7700X/3080 and just upgraded my CV1 to a Quest 3 (using link cable). Use openXR, dial in your settings and you'll find that you can happily run 90fps in most sim racing situations.
@gzaos I have a 9700K and 3080, and I can run anything so you'll be fine. You may have to do some tweaking to get some sims to run well, but it should be plenty doable with your hardware.

Needing an adjustment should be anticipated when ordering a custom piece of hardware tbh. I understand frustrations, but to say you were scammed is a bit overboard, don't you think?
Oh totally, if you prioritize FOV and FOV alone, then the Beyond isn't competing with high FOV headsets. The Beyond is in a league of its own. It's an ultra lightweight headset designed for comfort and to be tiny. Bigscreen achieved this, and created something new and fresh to the market that caters to people like me, who really benefit from the lightweight form factor. These are absolutely fantastic if you know what you want, and desire what the Beyond offers.
This statement makes me think you haven't tried many VR headsets. There are so many reasons I choose 90hz over 120 it 144 when I'm play my various headsets. The tech is sooo much better than 5 years ago. Put on a quest 3 even and you'll be blown away.
Think not, ask questions. I've tried a Vive Pro, DPVR E4, Quest 2, Quest 3, Valve Index, and Bigscreen Beyond. I've had my share of experiences in VR, and I know what I prefer. FOV is nice to have, and I'd love to have more with the Beyond, but I'm not worried about it because I enjoy the micro OLED displays and beautiful colors and contrast that make up for it.
@@ThisKory sorry my reply is to OG comment, yours hadn't appeared yet for me. I agree with you completely. Each headset has its pros and cons, I was just saying the statement that VR was better 5 years ago isn't something anyone in the VR community would agree with.
And FOV and above 90hz is a small piece of the puzzle.
@@alexanderstainton3199 Whoops, sorry for the misunderstanding haha XD Cheers!
