  • Comfort is a significant issue holding many gamers and Sim Racers back from committing to VR. And while VR offers an extremely immersive visual experience, the reality is that other factors such as comfort and workflow can easily outweigh the benefits of VR. But you only need to take one look at the Bigscreen Beyond VR Headset to see that many of those issues have been addressed.
With each unit custom-built to your face, the incredibly small and lightweight design of the Bigscreen Beyond unlocks a potential for VR that I haven’t seen before. Add to that its ease of use and simple workflow, and you’ve got what I think is one of the most exciting bits of gamer hardware of 2023.

Seeing previews of headsets with huge FOVs with small optical elements gives me hope that a BSB style headset with 120 degrees or more will be incoming in the next couple of years. Hopefully in time for the 5xxx series of gpus.

This is exciting for vr in general. The size of the headset can be a big deterrent for a lot of people, plus all the adjustments. Very nice coverage, answered all my questions. I'm interested to see how long they last before any failures.

@@ChrisPBacon9 I replaced my Reverb G2 with a Pico 4 because it felt too heavy. Front shaked too much. And the cable was a nightmare.
I think this Bigscreen Beyond is just too expensive. Specs are pretty impressive for sure, but there's some pretty major downsides even other than the high price. I think rather than pushing specs, PC VR headsset makers should be pushing for the best specs they can make in an affordable headset that can be bought for no more than $500. Maybe up to $600-$700 for a premium version of it. Have it come with everything it needs like controllers so that people aren't forced to buy extra stuff to get a halfway decent experience. It's pretty much an unfilled hole in the market. Can't say I understand why no one even seems to bother trying to go for it.

Its great to see new players entering the scene. The custome sizing is not for me but I'll look forward to their next one maybe if its a bit more universal. The rest of it looks perfect. I have zero interest in wireless and self powered models that seem to be the trend because I couldn't care less about beatsabre or vr chat. I just want the best quality for seated VR for flight and driving sims.
It seems like too many manufacturers are trying to make these things be the next big thing that will replace phones or laptops but that's a highly dubious future in my opinion.

This is brilliant! …to hear a sim racer’s perspective. I preordered one months ago (I am usually very against preordering as a concept) and it’s reassuring to see that your impressions align with the other early previews from Tested, thrillseeker, etc.
It’s also great to hear that it’s plug and play and works fine with iRacing out of the box.
Bigscreen previously assured us that it does work with iRacing OOTB, but it’s good to see real-world verification of this; I reckon you are the first to upload footage of this headset working in iRacing instead of ACC.

Just a note on the resale prospects of the Beyond - Bigscreen will be making face gaskets available for sale as a separate item. So you'd just be buying/selling the device with it's fixed IPD which is no different to a pair of shoes for example. You find your size, you buy your size.

I wonder if I would be happy with the BigScreen Beyond. I've used the Reverb G2 for 3 months, and then I switched to triples. The reasons I switched were:
    • After a session with the G2, I'd always come out of it feeling dazed like I just woke up (however, I run 27s just behind the wheel, and it's only a little bit better, so it might be the adrenaline of racing).
    • I hated that I often needed to take it on and off. Not all the time, but often enough, even tho I used vocal commands to show the desktop in VR so I could interact with it that way.
    • Even with an RTX4090 and an i7, I needed to do a lot of tweaking with the graphics and do some compromizes, like lowering some settings, and the most annoying thing was the aliasing.
Reasons I'm happy with the triples now include:
    • Easier and faster to start the computer and get driving
    • After the initial "everything is flat" shock, I adjusted quickly and even tho the stereoscopic vision of VR is amazing, your brain adapts to the flat world.
    • I don't need to get the headset on and off
    • I can max out the graphics with my triple 1440p screens, and it looks AMAZING
Now, with the BigScreen Beyond, I feel that the following things will change or will not change:
    • I'll still need to get it on and off, but now with the added complexity of having to get my over-the-head headphones on and off too
    • I'll probably still feel dazed, but not so much (because it's a lot lighter and I assume it doesn't get as warm)
    • I'll still need to lower the graphics, but hopefully the aliasing won't be as bad due to the higher PPD compared to the G2?
Will, would you mind sharing your thoughts? I know you're busy but you're one of the most qualified people to share an opinion on this. Thanks!

I think the Quest3 will be the best affordable all rounder, if you don’t only sim race, but to have an OLED based PCVR headset that’s this light that connects to the display port is going to be a whole lot better than the Quest3, especially for sim racing or flight sims. It’s seriously tempting because it is so unique and doesn’t follow the trend.

@@Wiserone123 recently I change my triple 32s to triple 55s and it's been so amazingly immersive as the bigscreen beyond took so long to be delivered.. I only got the Bigscreen 2 days ago in Sydney Australia. It's definitely extremely sharp but I think it has quite a small sweet spot and not the brightest. You can turn it up to 150% and is much better. FOV is much more narrow then the index and kinda feels like you're looking through a helmet ... I think I've now been spoilt by the big 55inch TVs being so bright and the view being beyond 180 degree. Im going use it for a little bit and decide if I really want to keep them. I think the main problems I have is the FOV and the small sweet spot.

I think Bigscreen Beyond did something better.
What they did was work with Valve so that their headset has native support and doesn't require the extra overhead of compositor that adds latency. Doing that makes it more efficient in all titles out of the box without configuring anything extra.
The Vive, Crystal, Aero, etc all have a custom compositor. The BSB runs natively like an Index.
The main problem with dynamic foveated rendering is that it requires a custom hook to be written between OpenXR and the native SDK of each headset for every title. There is a guy who is giving of his time to do this and we all appreciate his efforts. But the fact remains that this feature only works for a few titles. For the titles that do have support you have to download a separate plugin for each title that you have to install and then configure assuming it exists. I've done this for my Aero and it is doable, but only for a few titles that are supported and it is an extra piece of software to periodically update.

I would potentially also love a headset version of a stereoscopic flat panel 3d display that doesn't suffer from the darkness of shutter glasses or the lower resolution of the passive interlaced ones. I don't need the whole world in front of me to be 3D - I just want to experience that stereoscopic viewpoint and use my mouse/keyboard/wheel as I would with a flat panel. Seems like that would be easier and with no screendoor if it were approached that way.

I really wanted to like the Quest 3 but having owned a Quest 2 and used it for PCVR, I think I'm going to have to get one of these Beyond's. Having that extra layer of compression/decompression in the Quests due to USB 3 just kills the experience for me. It adds soo much latency (like 30ms total or more) and tweaking the extra settings to get it working right is a huge PITA. Display port is definitely the way to go as I've found out with my G2. In the G2 if your running at 90Hz, you know you have to get your latency below 11.1 micro seconds and your good ... so you just move the render scale up or down til your at 8 or 9 and that's it. Simple. Also a lot of the filters and settings on graphics are just ways of trying to make bad graphics look good. If you get a powerful enough GPU and you have high enough resolution screens, you can just shut most of that crap off and let her eat ... again, simple. With the Beyond, you can run at 75Hz and it still looks good which means your ceiling is, I think, 13 or 14 ms. This is great if your running something like MSFS which is a hefty program. You'll be able to run native refresh rate with no reprojection and with the higher resolution you won't need a lot of filters which just bog down and blur up your experience anyway. Right now, I'm running American Truck Simulator in VR on my G2 with all the settings maxed, plus mods and I'm doing it at 9ms latency with the render scale in Steam at 180%. That's 90 Hz native on the G2 and it looks fantastic. Granted, I'm doing it with a 4090 and a 5800x3D but the difference is night and day. My 3080 couldn't even think about doing this. The G2 is 2140 x 2140 per eye and the Beyond is 2560 x 2560 per eye with better lenses and micro oled, so I think that's the next logical step, even if I have to buy a base station or two. Cheers !

I've read that Pimax Crystal has HDR and Bigscreen has a "glare" issue during scenes with high contrast, is it true?
Or maybe it's impossible for now to get better cinematic experience from a VR headset than from a good 65" hdr oled tv set? What do you think?
