Double:Single Action Guns Outdated? Why I Switched

  • Disclaimer: this video got lost in my "To be uploaded" archives and thus is a tad old. It should have been released before my CZ P07 series. ALSO, READ BELOW BEFORE YOU BLOW UP THE COMMENTS IN YOUR SNOWFLAKE RAGE.
    Support the 2A not just your favorite gun.
    Now, if you post below in the comments silly jargon about how Glock's have better triggers or are more reliable then you clearly didn't read this first. I am by no means bashing on Glock or any other striker gun. For me and how I carry, the DA/SA just is better for me. I cannot talk myself out of the risk of pointing close to a single action trigger found in most striker fired guns at my femoral artery.
    1. Safety: What I am saying is that often times when it comes to safety we are so fast to blame the operator but at some point equipment becomes just as much the reason for negligent discharges. I, an appendix carrier, just have more on the line should that ever happen. DA/SA guns are safer due to that long first trigger pull. Also, when you train into it you WILL hit the target every time off the first DA pull.
    2. Trigger: which leads me into my next point. Striker triggers suck. Period. A vast majority are mushy and have a really crappy break. You get around this by modifying the trigger which usually lightens the pull. At that point, why not carry a 1911? The trigger is infinitely better than a DA/SA or striker gun. But 1911's are unsafe when the safety is off. That is my point with most modified striker guns. They have no real safety. The trigger dingus simply does not count. If you're going to get your carry gun below 5lbs, do yourself a favor and just carry a 1911. You'll shoot it better anyways.
    3. Reliability: just watch the Military Arms Channel's gauntlet and count the times the hammered fired guns do better than striker guns. You'll find that ALL of them perform better. Why? Physics and a more sealed gun. Striker guns have a small striker channel that can get clogged. Hammer guns have the same striker channel but the firing pin on a hammer gun is activated by the hammer, not a small striker sear. There is little tension on the firing pin on a hammer gun because the hammer is what activates the pin's movement, not the striker sear.

    27 years in the Marines and 25 years of CCW and I will not even consider putting a striker fire near my junk. I own(ed) a few and love my Glock 43 but the only gun coming near my junk is my Beretta PX4 Storm Compact and hopefully my soon to own CZ-P07. I have a million (not really it's less) Grand Kids and I never, ever carry a striker fire near them.

    My preference has always been double action/single action / hammer fired pistols. I currently carry a H&K P 30 SKS (V3). However, I do carry a Walther PPS M2 on occasion. Unlike many others, I also prefer a manual safety. After carrying for 35 years it’s second nature to disengage the safety as I draw the pistol. It’s all a matter of preference. If you train regularly and maintain your handgun you should not have any problems regardless of the flavor that you select for your carry weapon.

    Excellent video and very good points, especially for appendix carry. I too like the added safety of the DA/SA action for AIWB carry. I typically carry a Glock 19 but I'm very cautious of reholstering. I find that it takes a lot of practice drawing and shooting that first DA pull for the DA/SA action.
    I recently purchased a Walther P99AS to test out the DA/SA action in a striker model. One of the hidden benefits of the P99 is second strike capability. The P99 gives you the nice longer, heavier pull in DA mode but the short crisp action in SA mode. It also has the striker indicator that will protrude out the back of the slide cover plate, so you can thumb over it while reholstering.
    Thanks for sharing...

    Another plus you didn’t mention is when upholstering to fire in an emergency you are much less likely to get on the trigger too early. I bought an Sig 365 when I decided to start carrying and it immediately became apparent to me that this is way way more dangerous than my previous PX4 I used to carry in my vehicle. After really looking into the matter the CZ P-07 was an obvious choice. Good gun, not so expensive to cause you to worry about wear or potential loss if ever used. I’ve never found the double action pull to be an issue but I also stay proficient with my 38 J frame DA only revolver. We are in full agreement.

    @CameronRedd 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You are right about some people not agreeing and some may get testy about it, but I share your view on this. I agree with the preference of the hammer fired for several reasons. I’ve been caring the full-size CZ 75B just behind the 3 o’clock position inside the waistband, (Alien Gear holster) and it conceals well for me (6’3” & 250lbs). When drawing the weapons is in the 1/4 cock position with safety off so there is nothing extra to do or think about, so in a high stress situation there is less to go wrong. To me the longer, heavier, deliberate trigger pull, in that situation, is a good deal and if follow-up shots are needed they are easy to facilitate due to the outstanding single-action trigger pull & break. I don’t like the “cocked & locked” position, but if you do that option is available. When re-holstering I’m push,down on the hammer so on the off chance something snags the trigger the gun can’t fire inadvertently because the hammer is being held forward. You also have the option of a second trigger pull on a weak primer if it doesn’t ignite the first pull. I am not a Glock hater but I simply prefer the DA/SA hammer action to striker fire systems. My first nice pistol was a Glock 17 and had no problems with it, but migrated from striker fired to revolvers and then back to semi automatics with hammers. My current favorite are the CZs. I’m thinking about the CZ P-07 for the lighter weight. Anyway...., thanks for the video!

As much as I LOVE that gun for never giving me a single malfunction, I think DA/SA is safer. Only problem is now you're going to add 10-15 ounces to your gun. Smallest option on the market is the XD-E, which weighs more than a full size Glock 17.

    Nice video, I was wondering why printing is so important for you, if your in Idaho you can legally CC just about any including cities if your over 21, I’m I correct on that? And if so you cares if you print a little at 4:00? Just curious, I carry at 4 but under certain circumstances I will appendix carry, I’ve worked in house investigation for plaintiff attorneys for yrs and there are time when I absolutely cannot print and appendix is what I have to do, but I do it reluctantly and always a hammer fired CZ w/empty pipe, but what’s deal with needing such perfect CC?

    • @asianky1e30
      @asianky1e30  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Big eye Tuna I would say this is a far cry from perfect. In fact if they made a single stack hammer da/SA is probably carry that. The XDE is a monster. It’s every bit as tall as my CZ and weighs the same. But Idaho is a Constitutional Carry state. But I still prefer my great equalizer to be hidden which is why I rarely OWB and never open carry. Mostly this was made to show that Da/SA is not dead as well as why I traded in my tricked out 43

    I grew up shooting DA/SA pistols, when i first started carrying it was a S&W J-frame .357 from the 60's best CCW ever everyone cries capacity but my philosophy is if it takes more than 2 shots you are in a place you shouldn't have oughta been anyways. My first semi-auto was a Beretta 96-C 40cal hammer fired gun and other than it being a bit heavy it was a flawless weapon it would eat any ammo you fed it and loved it. After that it was a Springfield GI model 1911 .45ACP great gun, then i bought a CZ 40-B 40cal for 289.00 new in the box and sold everything but the CZ. I had purchased an XDM 9mm when they first came out guess what sold it shortly after it was the first striker gun and the Steyr M9 will be my last and only striker gun in the stable alongside the Sarsilmaz cm 9 gen2 and the ATI FHX 45c that I'm on a waiting list for. DA/SA is amazing and the 1911 platform has been copied for over 100 years for a reason it is proven reliable through the majority of military conflicts of the last 110 years the world over. It is also the most coveted weapon for competition shooting, so until a striker fired weapon can stake that claim, i will trust 110 years of evidence.

    Hammer-fired is more reliable, but not more durable. They break trigger return-springs and have more parts to break. When all the parts are in working order, the gun is more reliable. They have more parts to break, and they break more often. The trigger-return-spring and slide-stop lever are 2 parts alone that break on CZs with alarming regularity.

    I have been carrying for about 10 years and have owned and tried it all. Glocks work well. I cant argue with that. I carry a Glock 43, 23, and even a custom 17 from time to time. When I chose to get certified as an armed guard, I chose a DA/SA because of the safety factor of the first trigger pull under stress. My first choice was a Sig P229 Legion, which has an excellent trigger, but my choice now is the P07. Great videos, great logic! Keep it up.

  • @dcfolsom

    He only mentioned it in passing, but the safety issue with small kids in the household is huge. My granddaughter bought a Glock43 as her carry pistol, and she has a 2 year-old boy. I asked her what would happen if she were rendered unconscious and her son found the g43. Of course, "That would never happen." Then I reminded her of her cousin, who also has a 2 year-old, and unbeknownst to her, also has epilepsy. She got home from work, went inside, set her daughter down, and collapsed on the floor, where she lay for 3 hours until her husband came home. I then handed her my XDE, de-cocked with safety on, and asked her what would happen if her 2 year-old got his hands on it. She now carries an XDE, de-cocked, safety on.

      I puked a little in my mouth. Lol to each their own. The reason i use da/sa over cocked and locked is keeping the hammer cocked exposes one of your pistols greatest weakness. Dirt and debris can cover the back of the firing pin causing your gun to not fire. Also yes your first trigger pull will be better than a double action BUT you gotta disengage your safety before shooting.... the same effort doing that you can just cock a da/sa gun, an with a da/sa gun you can shoot right away if you absolutely have to.

    I carry appendix and shooting an artery isn't my main concern. Shooting off something else is. I know my G19 is safe and I understand that to fire a Glock you literally have to pull the trigger, as the striker is not fully cocked. I still prefer my P-07 as I'm more used to DA/SA from the M11, back in the day (90s), and I like the better single action. People complain about the DA first shot, but I don't feel much of a difference.

    Agree 100%, not to mention you can see the state of your firearm...... the hammer is there to see, cock and decock..... and I'm not sure a SA/DA takes longer to learn.... perhaps 5 more minutes.... ;) And you don't have to use the long pull if you don't want to, you can manually cock the pistol..... I am particularly fond of pistols that have a safety and decocker.... that gives you other options like cocked and locked.....

When Glocks first came out to the civilian world people thought they were stupid, same with the AR15. Only difference is Glocks suck and the AR is the best rifle of all time ;) (Im a James Yeager fan btw)

    I agree 100 percent with all your points. I carry a Arex zero 1 T daily and love the gun. Without question hammer fired da/SA pistols are safer than striker fired guns as long as the person is trained and practices. I think many many times striker fired guns are purchased when a person is trying to avoid practicing regularly. First time gun buyers buy a sig or a glock shoot it maybe once in the first year and think they are competent.
    Funny thing is I hear all sorts about the DA trigger pull being inaccurate and that your wasting your first and most important shot, I call BS on that. In reality many who carry Da/SA who pradtice regularly will tell you that 9 times out of 10 that there first shot in DA is more accurate and on target as fhere second shot. In a self defense situation I've never heard anyone ever talk about the quality of theor guns trigger pull.....

    You have the femoral and saphenous veins, this veins runs down in both legs and are the main source of blood to the legs, this veins are huge and have a lot of blood running, if you cut open this vein you die in less than 3 minutes. You are aiming your junk and this veins area carrying appendix when you are in seat position like in a chair or driving. Also carry a double action flying hammer because carry a external hammer cocked and locked you are in the same risk.
