Heritage: The 1992 Ottawa Senators Expansion Draft

  • Ottawa apologizes: The two words that became a bit of a meme within the hockey world in the early 90's, and for good reason. The Expansion Draft that year was already awful for the Senators and Lightning. Next to no one was available for them to take and others colluded with each other to make sure their vulnerable players weren't selected.
But Ottawa would take it a step further. Many more with their bungling. This is the story of the 1992 Ottawa Senators Expansion Draft

If you thought that Expansion Draft was a disaster, get this: they took Alex Daigle in the 1993 NHL Draft with their 1st overall pick, and he became one of the biggest high profile draft busts in NHL history. On the flip side, they did draft pretty well outside of Daigle (Yashin in 92, Bonk in 94, Berard in 95, Philips in 96, Hossa in 97), and made the playoffs in the 5th year of their existence.
What I am saying is that despite epic fails, teams and individuals can move past it instead of letting that fail define the person or franchise. So if you are a hockey fan, please do not be so judgmental.

He never made any real moves to get us out of mediocrity - the only exception I can think of was bringing in Teuvo Teravainen.

The '91 expansion draft was pretty nutty too; for one thing the two new teams that'd be taking players were the San Jose Sharks and... Minnesota North Stars. Yes, the Stars had already existed for 23 years by that point, and were the defending Campbell Conference Champions to boot, but with the Gund family wanting to move back to the Bay Area, the league wouldn't let them take the team with them, wanting to keep them in Minnesota. So, they let the Gunds sell the Stars and buy a new team in San Jose, the Sharks, as a compromise; effectively undoing the Stars merger with the Gund-owned Cleveland Barons in 1978. (The Stars of course moved 2 years later anyways due to the incompetence of Norm Green, so that worked out well!)
So first the North Stars protected most of their NHL roster, leaving the Sharks to pick from table scraps and prospects, then both teams picked one borderline NHLer from every other team. For whatever reason though, perhaps a bug or oversight of some sort, among the draft pool was each team's _voluntary retired or ineligible lists,_ in some cases including players who had retired over a decade prior. (Just as one example, among the retired/ineligible players that North Stars GM Bob Clarke could have picked in that draft was *himself,* from the Flyers.) The closest either team actually came to taking one of those players was the Stars wasting the final pick of the draft on Guy Lafleur, who would retire that same offseason, from Quebec because to quote GM Clarke, "there was nobody left".
In the subsequent season the North Stars actually _improved_ by 2 points over their previous record, but couldn't turn it into another Cinderella run, bowing out in the first round of the playoffs to Detroit. The Sharks meanwhile, won just 17 games in their first season then just 11 (with 71 losses) in their 2nd, setting new lows for expansion futility that wouldn't be matched until... well, the Ottawa Senators the very next year. (in 92-93 the Sharks and Senators _tied_ for last place in the NHL with *24* points each.)
