This is an owner I've wanted to get to for a good bit. Marge Schott is unbelievable to hear about, and not in a positive way. Her antics and cheapness were both infamous and legendary. Intense hatred of players and executives. A lack of understanding/care of the game. More respect for her dogs than the team. Blatant racism. Never knowing when to shut the fuck up. These are the hallmarks of Marge Schott's ownership reign.
This video is a relic, but not of the 90's. More like the 1790's, if even that.
The amount of scandals she caused that Nick Castellanos could have been forced to cover up with three-run shots would have made him the greatest baseball player in history.
As there's a drive into deep left feild by castellanos. That's a home run. that'll make it a 4-0 ballgame

Castellianos has made a habit of inopportune times, starting when a respected play by play hot called Kansas City- and that ball is driven deep to left field by Castillianos! And that will make in a 4-0 ball game. I don't know know if I'll be posting this comment again.
As a living Reds fan, this one has been a long one coming. Marge is a fascinating character in Cincy lore.
Shott was such an Embarrassment to the NL and MLB alone, that they tried EVERYTHING in their Power to make sure she was forgotten. It remains to be seen whether or not she's cursed the Reds, TBH, I thought it was Rose's Gambling that did.
@@Tornado1994 I thought she cursed the entire city with it. The Bangeles had enough suffering thanks to Mike Brown and recent superbowl loss
Yeah as a native Cincinnatian, I can confirm that Schott is *EXACTLY* the sort of ultra-bizarre, totally dysfunctional fucking weirdo boomer that only Cincinnati could have produced. She and Pete were two of the strangest personalities in the history of sports and they both came out of Cincinnati. I don't know what the fuck happened, but that entire generation of Cincy boomers came out totally fucking sideways. I'm so glad I moved away.
And he made a deep dive video about her in 2022. These are the videos he often says he wants to make but doesn't have the time. Passionate about his craft, doesn't half-ass anything, listens to his audience (i.e Week 1 2022 SportsBall reaction) and has common sense.
Can we plant Utree in the ground? This world needs a forest of UrinatingTrees, especially right now!
@@sbfcapnj She was born in the 1920s, so wouldn't that make her (somewhat ironically when you think about it) kinda the "Greatest Generation"?
I can safely say that Marge Schott is one of the worst owners in MLB history, as there's a drive into deep left field by Castellanos and that'll be a home run. And so that'll make it a 4-0 ballgame.
I don’t think I’ll be putting this headset on again.
*Laughs in Dean Spanos*
The only difference between Schott and Steinbrenner is that Steinbrenner was a man. Almost all of the MLB owners are disgusting cartoon villains.
I love how that’s the first thing people think about when they think of the Reds now.
@@scawfan75 spanos is better than schott
Omg, I knew Schott was a shitty owner and a racist, but holy cow I did not know it was this bad. She is literally a female Donald Sterling. Reds fans, I am so sorry. At least you won the 1990 World Series.
To be fair, there are some traits where she's much better than Sterling. I don't think she was as mean-spirited as Sterling is because at least she did care about animals. On the other hand, she was probably far more racist than Sterling is. I think she's more cartoonish than anything else. She reminds me a lot of Eric Cartman
She had Literal SHIT all over the Field. Bred St. Bernards. And let them Shit all over it.
Marge gets a nod over Donald in that while Marge was a horrible boss, she did put back into the community of Cincinnati. Donald Sterling was a slumlord & an ambulance chaser.
@@ralph8677 Yup, there’s nothing redeemable about that lowlife subhuman Sterling.
But that means she got a championship in 1990
Never forget that Nick Castellanos hits a homerun to give the Reds a 4-0 lead.

@@MKISports
No, Marge would have had him call Castellanos a racial epithet if she was really possessing him
I always knew that Marge Schott was a... volatile individual.
This video made me realize that "volatile" is too lenient of a word to describe her. I can't believe she'd express no sympathy for an umpire who perished on a baseball field.
Why would anyone ever show sympathy for an umpire dying, its similar to watching a mosquito or some other pest die
The SI article Tree gets most of his info from was printed in full in the 1997 volume of The Best American Sports Writing series.

I still remember that 1990 Reds team fondly from when I was a kid. It's still impressive that they won that World Series despite how Marge treated the team. In retrospect, it really speaks more about them than it does her.
It reads like the real life version of MAJOR LEAGUE
@@insertnamehere5809 Indeed, it does!
@@Spikey_Buddy Amazing that Major League came out in 1989. I could have sworn that movie was inspired by this lady, but instead it was being made before most of the world even knew who she was.

Well he also got cancer, so it’s more likely his body kept breaking down because it was literally turning against him.
I was about to talk about the Bengals and then I saw the thumbnail, therefore I have nothing to talk about as I am unintelligent when it comes to baseball.
But I can trust UrinatingTree as he makes immaculate documentaries.
Secret Base did a worst video on her about five years ago that had a lot of these same stories in this video.
Schott is one of those relatively few owners to make Mike Brown look like the most passionate and loveable owner in sports history by comparison (although at least she only lasted no more than a third as long)
The fact that Marge Schott got banned from the team from managing it from 1996 to 1998 due to comments in support of German domestic policies of Hitler and then had to sell her majority share of the team due to those past comments she made and then after winning a world title with the Reds is really sickening and kind of impressive she was able to own the team for as long as she did i mean who knows what other comments she could of said.
She was the PRINCESS of Late Night Comedy Punchlines and a STAIN on the MLB's Reputation.

My Grandpa lived in Cincy, he really hated how she cut the organ player at Riverfront. He loved coming to where we live and catching a Cards game. I was a tyke and still remember how much he hated her.
This is one of the few videos that I've watched on this website where I've had to stop, get up and take a breather because I was laughing so hard.
The sheer absurdity of it all just tickles me pink.
It really speaks to how vile Schott was that you can make a very good case that she’s worse than any living team owner right now. And among all owners ever I think only Ballard was worse.
Ballard is the Babe Ruth of shitty owners. He was so bad, you can't believe he truly existed, just like Babe Ruth being so great, it's tough to believe he existed.
I mean she did donate to kids and animal organizations. Ballard probably donated the hair in his bathtub drain.

# 001 From what I've seen from the video and read up on her. About 90% of the crap she's done would not have flew today. They probably wouldn't let her near the stadium parking lot let alone the stadium.
I knew of the racism and pro Hitler stance Schott had but I had no idea of her cheapness and greed. She makes Harold Ballard's infamous greed and cheapness look like Roman decadence in comparison.
Idk if I would go that far. Ballard strong-armed the Beatles into doing two shows at Maple Leaf Gardens instead of the agreed-upon one show. Not to mention how he would shut off the AC and water fountains so he could jack up the concession prices and get people to buy drinks.
@@nicksojka7457 Yeah I knew of that. If you want someone who is like Marie Antoinette in a Baseball Front Office, here she is. The biggest sign of 'let them eat hotdogs' that the sports world has had in decades.
Marge Shott was the Jezebel of Baseball Club Owners.
Marie Antoinette never said "let them eat cake." It came from a book written in 1765, which means that when the book was written, she was NINE YEARS OLD and lived in Austria, obviously not the person the line came from. It's also notable that Marie Antoinette was pretty well liked by the French public until a bunch of documents decrying the nobility suddenly and radically shifted to decrying specifically her, not all that long after she did a bunch of things that hurt the position of various nobles at court. She also had a shitload of false accusations thrown at her by her enemies, like, an absolute fucking truckload, a good number of which were proven wrong in court or noted as being fucking absurd by anyone actually paying attention.

Die hard reds fan here, I was wondering when Schott would get a video. A bizarre and backwards time in Cincinnati history. Seems now the reds have traded a cheap and racist owner for just a cheap one.
A very cheap owner at that
I always believed that the Reds for the most part never recovered from Marge Schott’s reign. And she ruined what could have been the modern version of the Big Red Machine.
I had a feeling this would be coming out - so glad it's finally here.
Only UrinatingTree could get a sponsorship approved on a video about one of the most racist and worst owners in sports history
@Fries only 519k at this point, but maybe one day....
Those mid-late 90s Reds jerseys are still some of the best I've seen aside from the old D-Backs ones.
I remember her reign well. It was impossible to make up an outrageous Marge Schott story as a joke and have someone know you were pulling their leg, because the things she actually said and did made almost anything believable. I can't imagine anyone (in baseball) missing her, but I'm sort of glad I lived through the experience, just for an all-time yardstick. Like, "You think THAT owner is bad? Well, let me tell you about Marge Schott, young 'un."
There are still folks here in Cincinnati who look back on Marg extremely fondly because of how she treated the fans and city. It’s a shame how awful she was as a person.
At the end of the video you see all those kids on the field running with Marge, see how they're all white? Nobody noticed these things back then but they sure as hell would now.
Except there’s a black kid standing two people over from her.
@@bjchit Oops there goes his theory! I love race baiters: they are just as bad as the racists that they are trying to shame!

And that's why the Bengals never won a Super Bowl (and they lost the Royals and don't have a NHL team either), hell, even Jon Moxley got that curse, poor guy
Marge Scott was the original, "H. Itler did nothing wrong" person?
Wow...did not know that.
I thought she died in the 1990s. Had no clue she lived until 2004.
I know this video will be demontised but damn am I happy that you uploaded it , people need to not forget this vile woman, unfortunately seems alot of baseball owners feel the same way, maybe not the racism but definitely not wanting to pay and treating players like cheap property
They make millions of dollars! LOL How were they being treated like cheap property? It sounded like EVERYONE in the organization got similar treatment, so its not fair to suggest it was just the players were treated like cheap property! Sounds like she was a cheap skate! And if there were better options the players should have gone there and let her little empire coming crashing down on her! Really sucks for the residents of Cincy and the surrounding area! Just like it sucks for those who live around DC and have to support that mess of a football team there!
Definitely a pioneer in the field of being bad owners. Always glad to see equal representation in all fields.
My grandma worked for the company that insured the Reds and worked directly with Marge back in the day. She was an... interesting character. Even with her cheap and overbearing ownership style, she did still care about the team and was legitimately doing what she thought was best for them (obviously you can disagree with her decisions, but in Marge's eyes that's how it was). I don't know why, but apparently my grandma was one of the few people Marge claimed she liked. My mom sometimes tells stories too about having to wait around Marge's office while my grandma and Marge talked insurance. While I'm too young to remember Marge's obsession with her dogs, I can confirm my grandma always brings up that she sent dog hair to the players for "good luck".
I remember listening to an introspective on Marge where it ended with a commentator speaking about her sympathetically only to end with “I flew up to make sure that she did die.”
LMAO! ding, dong the witch is dead, the wicked witch is dead!
Harold Ballard: Finally, a worthy opponent. Our battle will be LEGENDARY!
Give me Lou, too. He hates facial hair, and neither of the three clubs had a single black guy during his time with said teams.
Tree; the “ayo what the f*ck” cut in was absolutely PERFECT
I once did some work for a jeweler in downtown Cincinnati who happened to provide custom jewelry for the Reds and Bengals. The owners were big fans and had tons of signed memorabilia from the team around their offices. One was a signed letter from Marge thanking them for their years of loyalty and top quality jewelry. Directly next to it was a framed Best and Worst of Cincinnati list from the Enquirer. The jeweler was listed under Best Jeweler. Worst Local Celebrity or Personally went to Marge Schott.
I feel like everyone knows at least one horrible aspect about Marge Schott, but there's always something else to learn.
I mostly vaguely knew about how cheap and racist she was and I think it was mentioned how her phone tapping played a part in getting Pete Rose busted.
The thing with the scoreboard, that was a new one for me. I especially loved the lack of self awareness she displayed by saying "I've got to have the worst public relations staff in America." Even if those two things were related I'd probably tell her "you get what you pay for, you cheap hag"
I grew up in the 80 and 90s, and kept with sports pretty closely, so i can say i lived this (the scoreboard was the absolute only thing i didnt know of her antics)
Same with Harold Ballard
I knew about her policy towards facial hair and body piercings
I knew absolutely nothing about her before this video. Not even that she existed.
You know between Marge Schott and Thom Brennaman i wonder if The Reds should do a background check before allowing people to join the organization

About an hour and a half after this came out, MLB CBA negotiations have finally come to an agreement. Quite ironic, huh?
I like these character sport profiles! I hope you do more of these! Awesome video
As a Mets fan, I always wondered why Davey Johnson couldn't stick with a team as a manager despite his success. I heard he couldn't get along with ownership, but when you realize he had to out up Schott, Angelos in Baltimore, and the stupid Wilpons, well how can you blame him?
Growing up as a Rede fan, I heard the the best moniker for her (can't remember where I heard it from)...but they gave her the middle name of 'ottabe' and I'll leave it at that! Thanks Tree for another awesome offering!!!
As a reds fan we now live with a nazi curse over our ball club. I'm pretty sure richtofen is somewhere under the city still performing expirenents
Lol richtofen……did you just make a cod zombies reference 😂 ah the childhood memories are coming back from this comment you made bro thanks. Heres a like.
1:22 Glad you mentioned in subtitles Joan Whitney Payson.
I’m not a fan of the New York Mets (I’m a fan of the Boston Red Sox), but from what I’ve seen of her, she seemed to have been far more sports savvy and loved her teams and sports. She’s a co-founder of the Mets and she DID win the 1969 World Series…and she probably deserved it too…
I don’t believe there were any controversies regarding her on and off the field…no racist comments or Nazi sympathies, the most I could find was her and her husband being upset when the New York Giants moved to San Francisco.
Mets fans, you can thank the San Francisco Giants for helping with the creation of the Mets.
I remember Billy West doing an amazing and hilarious impression of her on the Howard Stern Show.
I also remember the Bob and Tom show having somebody do a Marge Schott impression as one of their recurring bits.
"Cool it with the antisemetic remarks" - Bud Selig to Marge Schott (1996)
In a way, I'm almost glad that Marge never had kids. Having a family that toxic potentially running the franchise...I doubt the team would survive that
I feel that as a fervent WWII historian it should be said that owning any axis memorabilia is not illegal nor is it immoral. The stuff is incredibly rare precisely because of the reputation it carries.
That said, everything she said to defend it is pretty disgusting and I won't defend such insensitive remarks.
Growing up in Cincinnati my family never talked about when the Reds won it all when I was an infant. We went to a game or two a year.
Now I know why o_o jfc
I literally just googled Schott for the first time today so this is a rather timely overview
As a lifelong Red's fan, I was shocked that she didn't drive Marty and Joe out
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS VIDEO!!
This comes out as the lockout ends… PHENOMENAL
Great video Tree. All I could do is laugh at this story. I guess truth really is crazier than fiction
The Harold Ballard of baseball (at least from a sanity point)
Exactly
Hey I still got a picture as a kid at the stadium on her lap while she was chain smoking
Don’t let this distract you from the fact that the Cincinnati Bearcats baseball stadium (which was built in *2004* ) was named after her. They waited until *2020* to finally remove her name.
With the amount of controversy that happened beforehand, this is baffling.
There may have been some clause in the gift where her name had to stay on (for a while) or return the gift to her heirs. College baseball doesn't bring in enough revenue to cover costs much less this. So maybe someone else donated an equal amount so they could return the gift, or her heirs agreed to the change.
@@reedermh I just don't understand these people when it comes to removing these names. Does it actually hurt set minority if they look at those names and find out the background of these people? We're going to have to be honest yes she was a pioneer even though she had controversies behind. Many people would just say just keep the name and just suck it up.
Holy shit, I've been waiting for this video for 3 years and I don't really watch baseball often
When I was a kid in the 90s my folks would drive all the way across the state of Ohio to take me to a Reds game because tickets were cheap and hot dogs even cheaper...the Beach Boys played a concert right there on the field after the game, I came home with tons of memorabilia because again, it was cheap.
I knew Marge was a Natzee but God damn, son....
It's not often that I'm at a complete and utter loss for words, this is one of those times. All I can say is HOLY FUCK WOMAN.
Urban Meyer is the worst sports icon in history
Marge: Hold my Reds
Imagine, an owner that makes Dan Snyder look like The Pope.
Yeah, Pope Alexander the VI
If you don't know, please google. He's exactly the kind of Pope Snyder would be
