    Opening the throat doesn't mean lower your larynx and make a breathy sound that's just people misinterpreting things - so I think it's great that you brought this up. When the soft palate raises there should still be a clear ringing tone in the head, that is actually what proper open throat is referring to - the tone is relaxed open and rings clearly. It is very in line with what Seth Riggs teaches and very much in line with mixed voice with a rested larynx position

    the way I have always understood the term "open throat" going back 25 years is a relaxed throat - devoid of undue tension. I don't think I've heard anyone explain "open the throat" by not making a clear, connected phonation. I'd be interested to know where you saw or heard this Sophie.

      +Kevin Richards Rock the Stage NYC seriously what is she talking about , classical technique is still like 80% of all new "concepts" of singing and no opera singer sounds "woofy" the whole point is the use mouth resonance with head resonance from the bottom to the top so u end up with 1 voice with the least color change possible (or no color change) but it's not airy.

    ..open throat technique helps to gain desirable/commercial tone in singing as u lay more texture to your voice using breathiness as stylistic approach, most pop rnb or rock singers been marketed successfully with that, that added layer of breath hissing behind of your singing tone in songs is sooo so distinct for singers to been able to train it in their voice as it resemble that melted ice sound whispering chilling to your bones and naturally people tend to hear more closer someone that whisper to their ear rather someone that just sings..

    Eh, Open Throat meant you inhale through the mouth, with a mouth open on a small smile / pleasant surprise shape - this type of inhalation RELAXES the throat - then you sing just before you are to finish the inhalation, your voice automatically goes from the larynx up to the soft pallette and straight to the head cavities on it's own automatically - that's what open throat technique is - YOU DON'T LITERALLY OPEN UP THE THROAT. (This method comes in many names - inhalation of the voice, the inside smile, internal resonance, among others) Personally for me - this helped me learn how to sing in the mask - a lot travelled their voice from the mouth then the nose when trying to sing in the mask and they get nasal - but through open throat/inhalation of the voice technique - the voice vibration / buzz goes straight up above the head and not to the mouth - you can move that buzz from above the head to the eye area - and viola - Mask singing.

    John Legend, Michael Bublè, Beyoncè...and many others use open throat. In the end of the day I would say:if you use it, you have to be better then an pop singer and better then an opera singer, because you are using that techninc, but you know exactly when and where to stop;)

    So what should I do if I wanna sing country or pop?

    • @1108vocalstudio

      Yes, if you want to sing pop or country, you shouldn't be singing in a classical technique.

    Opening your jaw and lifting your soft palate doesn't have any connection to a weak phonation. How do those two connect? That's a strange correlation, haha.

  • @YadaiDelacruz
    @YadaiDelacruz 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Wrong ! Opening the throat doesn't mean breathy sound ! You are lowering way too much the larynx in one of your demonstrations, that's why it sounds like that, you're using something similar to the yawn to demonstrate the "open throat" -- it's not that simple!

    Hi Sophie, thank you so much for your videos I've been practicing with you for over a year now! I have a question I was hoping you could answer: as my chest/mixed voice gets stronger (doing a lot more Paramore/Flyleaf type songs) I find my head voice feels weaker? Does this mean I need to practice head voice more or have I hurt my throat? Thank you!

    I think I've never hit the thumbs down but I did this time. Teaching people is a responsible job, because they trust the teacher, cause they don't have their own information and your lesson on open throat was really rather confusing and not right. I mean of course it's not good to sing like this if you wanna sing pop but don't call it open throat method cause it's not.

    I'm sorry, but you don't reaaally know what you're saying)))))) it's obvious that open throat has nothing to do with that breathy sound you make))))))) open throat means relaxed throat, it's when you relax the back of the tongue, the jaw and the lips)))) I have no idea where you got that little info of yours from)))) but god if that was a joke, then you sure can joke))

  • @ny10980
    @ny10980 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Your exaggeration of the lack of resonance when opening ones throat is a misrepresentation of good technique. Open throat does not equate to the poor tonality that you are demonstrating. And what makes it worse is when anybody would use Taylor Swift in any example of good singing when she is an awful singer. To view an amazing example of open throat singing, well implemented, watch anything Carrie Underwood does. It's like the Grand Canyon in her mouth, low tongue open throat. And she has as much ping as any singer could ever dream of. Another example of marvelous open throated singing is the new kid Danielle Bradbery. Those two singers alone makes this video very bad teaching!! You only brought up Taylor Swift in the title to gain views on TH-cam because she is a really bad singer...
