This is a very important message Harnoor is delivering. My own parents moved here in 1970 and they only had Gujarati friends for all these years - even though the Indian community was much smaller then. And I see this even with Indians born/raised in the US, as they seem to only have mostly Indian friends. Not sure how/why this happens but hopefully the next generation will change this pattern.
This is true but it does not have to be that way. I moved here 23 years ago from India but my family friends are across the board. This is a conscious decision one makes and step number one starts with not looking for a place to live in an Indian neighborhood.
I'm an Indian moving to America in a couple of days and I really don't want to mix up with Indian groups. I personally admire the cultures of both the nations and want to move more and learn the other ones. What bothers me mostly is the racism Americans often show and how they portray Indians of all these years. I hope I can make good friends and connections over there. They're also humans :)

Ironically, I see this a lot less in the UK and see a lot of Indians in diverse friend groups
Being an Indian, I know what exactly you are saying. My son was raised in North America and I have faced the real challenges here. But, it does not mean that we can’t make friends. We have to try and connect with people who are more interested to build friendships rather than always thinking about them selves first. Career focused person would also think twice to make good friends like Americans but they focus more on their own self and independence. In a way, it is very important and we should take it positively.

Sure, there is a saying; “Everything glitters is not gold.” I think you might have heard it. If not then it means that in-spite of having strict law and order, you still feel scared because of the mental health problems and violence in couple of cities. I never got scared when I went to school in India but here every it is little different. There is a some kind of fear always revolves around you. I never experienced like this before in India when I was studying in school or college. Mr. Singh knows what I am trying to say as he has gone through the similar experience in his life when he was walking around near the university or somewhere in the downtown, if I am not mistaken. I have been through the school system for my son completely and I I know what it looks like. This is just a thing I have explained. You need to prepare yourself mentally rather than physically to survive here so you can solve any problem in any given situation.
But, you need to take one step at a time and try to connect with people who you feel comfortable and safe. But, it’s does not mean that you can’t make good connections. You need to make extra efforts to go out of the comfort zone and try your best to make connections and you will be successful.
When I was a grad student three decades ago, we used to have American Chinese European friends. But as more Indians came to the usa, they clustered together. Now it has become such that Telugu, Bengali other students are enough in numbers for them to flock together

I used to work at a office environment company that employed a lot of Indian students. What I noticed was Punjabis, Keralites, Tamilians, and Teluguvaaru interact among themselves and genuine non-work related cross-state interaction was quite rare.
That's quite interesting. Although, I do have to add that I really don't think Indians would be talking much among themselves since we already know most of the different cultures. Since most of us are raised in a multicultural society, there is not much left to discuss.
Same for gujaratis and marathis.
I have never been to usa but i can say in countries like France and Germany it's much harder to make friendship with German and French people than America.
I'm from a place of India where there's tons of foreigners and I've met two French old man and they were rude.
I live in Germany, and I have way more international friends than Indians, because I always push myself and see what they like and they are doing, because in the end I did not come here to meet more Indians, no matter how easy it is for an Indian to make more Indian friends😅
I arrived in the US 4 months back and my university is mostly filled with white community. I did not have a choice and I decided to get out of my comfort zone and made americans friends. They are one of the nicest people I know although there are certain exceptions to these but you can totally understand from their vibe. Avoid people who are unnecessarily rude cuz lowkey they are racist and talking or being nice wouldn't change anything.

I am Moroccan, and there is nothing I enjoyed in Morocco more than conversing with Americans, they are by far the best people out there, and the reputation of Americans in Morocco is awesome, they're loved by everyone there. Go to Tangier, and you will find the oldest and first USA foreign office! So no wonder! I got this many times from Americans: "if we find the professional ambition we're looking for in Morocco, we'd stay here without any reservation or hesitation", but unfortunately Morocco is still crawling towards being a developed country. Plus, Nerdiness if it exists, it is really American, and if you're friends with Americans, then your confidence problems are no longer an issue ;) It's a great country and people, but with serious political problems!

Let me tell you why. We believe that you can only make friends organically meaning not by looking to make new friends but by chance like college mates, roommates and sometimes mates at work or gym etc.
People in the West look for friends in activities, online, same kind of interests or just networking in general to excel in life.
Same issues exist in India....bangalore ..... mostly people forms groups as per there states...telugu, malayali,tamil,kannada etc north indian face such things in south india's colleges or in corporates
Even in North India also , Hindi people will like to talk only in Hindi, They don't care if the other person knows Hindi.

I'm from a university in New York and I can tell you that there is no such option to filter/choose roommates on the basis on nationality and their eating preferences. Yes, before the rooms are assigned, there is a page where you make a profile with a few words about yourself. Everyone can see everyone's profile and if two people find each other compatible, they choose housing together.
I love this conversation. I do agree with your guest, But I think she was afraid to address another issue. I struggle to make friends with Indians because I find that Indians keep within their own people more than any other group. They eat at their own restaurants, go to their own temples, live in their neighborhoods, etc. And choose not to integrate. And I find even when there are a group of Indians anywhere, they choose not to speak English, even if they know how. Also, colorism plays a major role. I am of mixed descent (half black, half white) and have been told by Indian friends that I would not be allowed in their homes because I am viewed as someone not to associate with. Whereas if I was white, I would be fine. So a lot of them limit their scope of who they can become friends with, based on cultural values of skin color. I love Indian people, but it is harder to make friends with THEM more than with any other group. P.S I live near Toronto and we have one the largest Indian populations in North America.

one category of students who have gone there might have taken lots of loans and have excessive pressure to complete college and get jobs and to repay the loans, while being students they have part time jobs to do as well to fend themselves, not all of them might have time/interest to discuss about sports/arts/fun etc etc in such conditions or to give in extra efforts to make friendships etc

Realising i am more American than Indian. I also didn’t talk to my parents on daily basis when i was in college. I would talk once a week. I prefer individualism than collectivism.
But they are your parents and would definitely want to talk with you once a day. That is why many people of our genz gen are drifting away from family specially from parents. Just my opinion.

I'm a student from the US and I would say even though Indian international students do sometimes stick to themselves they still branch out more than Chinese International students. I would say Indians speaking English and having a free democratic culture are likely the reasons why they integrate better than Chinese International students. But integrating better than Chinese international students isn't saying that much since Chinese almost never branch out.
That's because their English skills are not comparable to Indians in general. They have heavy accents and limited vocab

Indian students have debt in Indian rupees and they are constrained for time .. the job environment is also very challenging … all in all they need to survive first .. so naturally they gravitate to people just like them … also in most cases there is almost no upside in making diverse friends …. The cost in terms of money , effort and time is too much

As an international student in canada, from what I have observed, Indians students or Indians in general tend to stick with each other instead of being open to everyone, even in class they sit together, hangout together, do assignments together

You can make things happen. You don't have to pay tax. Your community can support you. The government gets out of the way so you can do whatever you want and achieve your dreams and goals.

We are individualists in that we separate each other from the government. But, we are communal people in that we help each other as family and friends.

I live in Montreal and 90% of my friends are Indians/desis. Guilty of being in comfort zone, unless otherwise required to go out of it.
I wonder what makes Americans so busy that they don't even call their parents once in a day... maybe prnhb or crystal blue. Then they come to Indian gurus to seek help when the whole problem is keeping that gap with your parents.
USA is a very diverse nation. If you live in a southern state like NC, GA etc you will realize people are more friendly. Even in busy cities like Charlotte, Atlanta. People do ask and say hello, greet. Even if they don't engage in a conversation.
I am so glad when I came to the US decades ago as an international student, I went to a southern state with 1% International students. I stayed on campus for 4 years and it helped me integrate into US culture.
Since then, I have moved to a major city out of the south and notice so many Indian/Asian International students who have been in the US for many years but still are not integrated and struggle to make American friends. This is the flip side of going to Uni in place like CA or NY where you just hang out with your own tribe and never really learn anything about US Culture.
My suggestion, find Uni in states like TX, FL, NC, VA. Go to Cities known as the New South.

It gets hard when you know they think of their country and culture as superior. I personally cannot allow that and try to be friends with Americans. All Indians should first just try to be confident about their position and culture and Americans will eventually follow.
And that's how the majority of Indians think about their own country and culture. And people also tend to look down upon people from different states within our country. For example how UP/Bihari are stereotyped, how North and South think their culture and language is better. People are racist to NE... Everyone thinks they are the superior ones

I see there is no need to go out of way to intermingle at least who came after >2014 as after graduation most of indian students would become workers on temporary immigration status and you would be waiting in gc queue for over 100 years . So I would say prioritize learning skills which fetches money and save, build safety net and circle who might help you and be prepared to be kicked out of country .
