I've got Apple's new MagSafe Battery Pack, I'm unboxing it, I'm trying it out on the iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max, with and without a case, showing off AirPods charging, and comparing it to previous-generation iPhone Smart Battery Cases. Plus my first impressions! Oh, yeah!

perfect for my iPhone 12 mini, I'm away 12 hours a day for work (that's with commute) and I'm streaming Apple Music and listening to podcasts about 11 hours + texting phone calls and internett browsing, so this will be nice to have👍🏻

I like it! Not a permanent fixture for the phone but quick and easy to pop on and off when needed.
You should look for another product that do the same thing with more capacity and far more efficient. Just google Magsafe powerbank.
@@ctgaming168 is the form factor similar? Its important for this kind of product, that it feels comfortable in the hand while used on the phone. Otherwise why not just get a 20000mah wired powerbank with fast charging to top the phone off in 30 min?

If this was £60 I wouldn’t have thought twice about picking one up, just to have in case I needed it. £100 is a big outlay.

I paid £60 for a new one 2 weeks ago. You can buy them at this price now quite easily on eBay.
I think the most important thing to do is to see just how much it will charge each phone, maybe a battery test with the battery pack on to see how much more screen on time you get

I just got iPhone 13 pro with MagSafe power pack battery which it doesn’t charge at all BUT I had the megaSafe battery attached all day and it kept the charge level at 90% to 91% all day without draining my main battery. What you said it does is what I have experienced with apple power pack battery. Thanks for the information.

As a plugged in charger, could you compare it to the $50 Magsafe puck charger? Charge speeds and ease of use/ergonomics?

@@juliet4093 Thank you for sharing your minority preference, but as anyone who watches people in libraries, beaches, trains, and sports events knows for fact, the VAST majority of phone users have aftermarket cases. 😃 The vast majority of these cases are not Q charger compatible. That said, Josh, Apple loves you and others not using protective cases; they are in the business of selling new phones.

This is the best MagSafe Battery Pack review I've seen so far. Excellent work comparing it with the iPhone 11 battery case, and showing how it works and fits on all the different iPhone 12's. I love all your recent videos.
Was hoping you'd mention the battery capacity is actually not accurate to be measured in mAh in here because the voltage is twice as the iPhone 12 models. Therefore, Wh would be a more accurate metric to measure the actual capacity of the MagSafe Battery Pack.

I actually LOVED that 11 Pro/Pro Max battery case. It didn’t seem too out of this world thick. I hated it was silicone, but I lived with it lol.
The only reason I still have my iPhone 11 Pro is because of the battery case sold by apple. It’s perfect, gives me battery throughout the day/night, one charge port charges both the accessory and the phone, pop-socket friendly, and the case protects my phone. I want the new iPhone but can’t give up the things I get with this battery case!
Bought one today and tried it with my iPhone 12 pro max. I first charged the battery pack to full, then attached it to the phone with a 42% charge. When the battery was exhausted, it was only able to charge the phone to 85% in almost 2 hours. The magnet is really strong and almost hard when it's attached to the phone. You probably would just be buying this battery pack for the convenience and the Apple logo.
I’d like to see how this compares to the Anker MagSafe charger that is half the price…Please?
Anker does not have a MagSafe charger, it has a Chi charger.
@@andyH_England It’s called the PowerCore Magnetic 5K and magnetically attaches to the iPhone. It is also 5w. So yes it may not be an actual “MagSafe” as Apple’s is but the design and usefulness is similar. But that is why I’d like to see a comparison. $99 vs. $45.
@@FunAtDisney Looking at many of the alternatives on Amazon they get very mixed reviews with a lot of units failing or just performing below expectations? Also, watch out for fake good reviews especially those with pictures. I noticed the Powecore just about fully charges the mini so similar to the Apple pack. That means the Powercore is inefficient and maybe more heat. Apple have spent nearly a year making their pack good to go and sometimes I suppose you pay for what you get?
@@andyH_England Yes for sure. Personally I would get the Apple product just for that. I do have a couple of Anker chargers for my 10XR, one is a wireless stand, and they work fantastic. But yes I see your point. Good info, thanks!

Perfect for work. I work in a warehouse and my phone die by 3:00pm. This keep my phone going all day.
I Might get it as soon as it’s Available in my country. For long trips or a quick juice charge it’s perfect.
It charges at 5W so this definitely isn’t quick charge. Best use for me right now is just slap it on to make the battery drain slower.

The MagSafe Wallet and every MagSafe back accessory from now until the sun dies needs that grey back of this charger. Rene you can be specific on what material this really is but I think it’s a sort of soft plastic, and it’s great because it creates extra friction with the phone so it doesn’t detach. That was really a problem with the wallet because it was slippy leather rubbing against the phone as opposed to this Greg material that actually uses friction

It seems to me that they (Apple) designed specifically for the iPhone 12 mini to offset the paltry size of the internal battery.

Smart battery case save my 4 yr old low battery health iPhone X.
iPhone can directly use the power from the case.
It can extend the using time way longer than your expect.
Still the best underrated accessories from Apple.
Does the pack recharge the phone while you are using a high power app or game? I.e can these drain the phone battery faster than 5W can replenish it? Does it get uncomfortably warm if you do this?

Reviewers fail to inform that only the 50% of the charge capacity of the magsafe battery is going to be transferred to the phone, the rest will be heat. This is due to the very low efficiency of wireless charging technology.

Not sure if anyone else has noticed but iOS 15 betas afaik aren’t updated to recognize the MagSafe battery. My 12 Pro Max running beta 3 thinks it’s being plugged in via lightning whenever the battery is attached and no MagSafe animation is visible.
iOS 14.7 recognizes it though, which makes sense considering the update coincides with the release of the battery pack

The utility (like swapping a camera battery) love the idea, shows Apple concentrate on simple use experience. No massive power bank you have to cable too or use for wireless charing. But then you've a brick in your hand. I think for the average commuter this is a great convenience device. Knowing Apple your good for around three years use.

I love the MagSafe pack on my 12 Pro Max, though. It gives me a place to rest my pinky lol.
Pretty much the best reason to have these is the ability to hot swap them. It does suck that it charges slower when just attached, but with the smart functionality, its good.
The last thing I'd add is that similar to camera battery style, I would prefer to buy 1 apple battery and keep like a 10,000mAh Anker battery. Might give more charges. Charge apple battery when it depletes, and after a while, slap it back on. Might better more battery for the limited bag space.

The additional size of the MagSafe charger over the iPhone 6s/7 battery case is not due to additional battery requirements of modern phones. It’s due to the horrendous inefficiency of wireless charging.

I think this would make a great “permanent” mount for the window mounted phone holder I use. Instead of having that strong magnetic puck stuck to the phone case I use just for using the phone as a selfie and window camera, I could put the puck on the battery and stick the phone on the MagSafe battery. Another plus would be no charging cable needed from the car to the phone for extended video.

I wonder now, if MagSafe was Apple's alternative solution to AirPower. The premise of AirPower is multiple device charging, anywhere on the charging pad. With MagSafe, the magnet makes it easier for you to place the device on the right spot. And instead of simultaneous charging for multiple devices, they give you more flexibility to charge your various accessories (on the go) with reverse wireless charging
Just a heads up Rene! Because the voltage is higher on this battery than the iPhone it self MAH doesn’t really measure its capacity well

My favorite brand is Pitaka. The mag juice 2 is the perfect solution with a removable battery in the same style. I think Apple's solution looks very clumsy, while the IPhone is so stylish. My advice: go for a Pitaka solution.
So hopefully this becomes a standard charging block, so the next few years of iPhones can all use them. In my family, we buy iPhones at different times (i currently have an 8 Pro, my wife the 2nd gen SE), so having to buy a new wireless charging case every time we buy a phone is a non-starter; we currently have wired power banks that we both put in our bags when we go out with our phones.

Any power bank, including this one, would also be useful when a storm knocks out your power for an unknown number of hours. That happened to me last week, and I was trying to be really conservative by turning my screen’s brightness way down and only occasionally checking my town’s subreddit for news updates.
I mean you’re not stating something specific about this product, of course a battery pack is useful for charging when you can’t use a wall outlet. If anything this wouldn’t be the best option for that bc it can’t fully charge ANY iPhone 12, including the mini

With my first impression being kinda negative, and how I feel it could be better.
Just “Think of it as an extension of your phones battery capacity.” - is exactly what I wasn’t thinking. To me, you say battery pack, Great, I think, it might not be super fast, but it should give whatever 1x full charge. Providing it’s not something stupid. Like… A MacBook, I wouldn’t expect that, I would have expected the phone to 100%.
But perhaps that’s not the point, I’d be curious to see what comes next after this. I’d be surprised if they don’t keep MagSafe for future iPhones. And whether or not they make a V2 battery pack/case.

I have an Xs with the smart battery case and I like it. This pack seems a lot more clunky and less stylish to have tho. Has apple discontinued the cases? I want to get the 13 and the thought of having a smart case with that phone would of been beastly+ battery life(since 13 pro max is already beastly by itself)
