    Apple's MagSafe battery pack is misunderstood and with this review I'm here to help set the record straight. Don't listen to the haters... this thing is awesome. No, it's not perfect (and it's not for everyone) but it does what it is supposed to do very well.

    I see your point, and they are valid, and you even changed my mind on a few points, like the battery capacity and that it's just meant to top-up. But the main issue is the price, too expensive. But it does look nice and reverse charging is also convenient.

    • @Rob165x
      @Rob165x 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Only thing I don't like about the reverse wireless charging is that it only does 5w from the iphone (it's a limit on the iphone side), while it can do 15w from the battery. The difference in speed between charging both while plugged into the iphone vs while plugged into the battery is substantial. I'm sure iphone 13 will fix this, but I'm also dissapointed that Apple has made reverse charging proprietary, by limiting the speed unless it's MagSafe™. Especially since wireless 5w is not as fast as wired 5w, this battery does have the efficiency advantage tho.

      Thé thing it replaces is the same price point the apple battery case . It’s kinda expected for an apple branded product to continue the price of the thing it’s replacing… unless it’s a different category or something…..
      It’s part of the apple math «
      If you look it applies to when apple combines product category’s too
      The Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro technically matchs the price of the apple keyboard case and it’s magic track pad
      Or even crazier the non smart apple iPad case + apple keyboard + trackpad is the same prices as the Magic Keyboard case

    Having had my magsafe battery pack for just a few days I can say that this is my experience exactly. I just don't understand why people have a problem with the capacity or the charging speed. With my 12 mini + battery pack I can easily go 20+ hours off the charger without worrying about rationing my usage at all. And in every other way the magsafe battery pack is far superior to non-apple alternatives. The magnets are strong and if you use a leather or silicone magsafe case it just feels like it's part of the phone, the software integration and reverse charging literally makes this a simple extension of the internal battery that should easily get the vast majority of users through even a heavy day. I understand the concern with price, and fortunately I was able to get a 10% military discount, but seriously, the quality of the experience is 100% proportional to the difference in cost vs. other products.

      I think this product was specifically designed and engineered for the mini phones. I got a 13 mini last year, and the battery seemed fine for me until I started working. Although I carry my charger all the time, It is just not possible for me to have access to power outlets to charge in close vicinity.
      I recently purchased this because the discontinued iPhone products vanish at the speed of Light from the market where I'm from. I wanted to have this, but the price was not convincing me. Luckily, because these are discontinued, a lot of electronic retailers are selling them at heavy discounts to clear stocks.I got this at like 70% off lmao.
      Ergonomically, it just suits the mini phones better. It also makes the movement more portable. If I have this attached, I won't have the phone pressing into the base of my palm while tilting it downwards.
      I can't objectively speak for it, since I haven't had the opportunity to use this in a work routine yet.
      Heating seems to be an issue though, since I am from a tropical country. Wireless charging generates more heat. The heat isn't conducted on the outside of the battery pack, but when you take it off and touch the phone, it's significantly more warm. So It is hard to get an idea about how hot it is unless you physically check.
      I still think it's an overpriced product. There are no control buttons, or a way to control some features wirelessly. I would have loved the choice of deciding the Charging Speed Watt so I could regulate it as per my requirement and climate. I would have liked an option to have the pack on but not charging the phone. So I could choose when it charges and when it doesn't. I would have liked a physical indicator to let me know how much battery the pack has. Nothing specific, just three colour lights indication the general charge 100-70 (Green), 70-40 (Yellow), 40-20 (Red), below 15% (Red Blink). I don't want all these features, but either one of them would just make this thing more usable.
      I could have waited for them to refresh the Next Gen of MagSafe Battery Pack, but it would have a USB-C, and no way apple is kind enough to include a Lightning Port. So I can't use that with my 13 Mini.

    I’ve been researching on all the types of MagSafe battery packs and I was about to pull the trigger on the Anker 622 mag go and the only thing that stopped me from buying was it heating up the phone. That can potentially hurt your battery life span ! But I bought barely 2 hours ago the Apple Battery Pack and so far so good and this review you made is definitely confirming the best choice I made. THANK YOU! Other people agree, but those comments were ignored. This is NOT a FAST CHARGER! it’s a battery extender. I believe the negative reviewers PURPOSELY avoided this fact. One reviewer said early in her video, her 12 mini was dead by 2pm then did the rest of the review showing cables and complaining about WIRED charging obstacles. She never said how long her phone lasted with the new pack! None of the negative reviews discussed the battery extension”s numbers like “my phone went from dying at 2pm to lasting until 9pm..”, “the pack added 4 hours of battery life to my phone”. You know, the type of information those “testing” this should have.

All I needed is to make my 12pro last a full day on 5g when I’m out and about. Also, the pack is magnetic, instead of cluttering my desk, i stick to my door when not charging. Best power pack! I use a top and bottom minimal case, which the Apple power pack is the only one to fit on my phone. Others leave a gap and often sit over the bottom edge of an iPhone 15 Pro (Max won't have this issue). I am personally testing only using wireless charging and focusing on battery health. I try not to go under 20% and cap at 80%, leaving the power bank on to get all the power I need for an extensive day's use. Charging at 20% will get me to 80%, so for me, this feels like a full charge anyway, or seeing how the bank got me through most of the day leaving a full 80% for the rest. It's very slim and feels great (I also find it provides some support for holding the phone). With reverse wireless charging, I just plug my phone in when both are dead, and it charges up. Using the pack to charge up my AirPods is very handy on the go! Overall, the best charger.
    In comparison to others that I use for my other devices, they are only plug-and-charge and unplug. They get hot, which can damage the battery over time. They are bulky to use, so I only use them when needed. They lack a UI battery indicator (having to turn the phone over to check its battery level becomes annoying!), while with Apple's pack, you can see it in the battery widget. With the update to 7.5W, I find it charges quicker than my other 15/20W ones.
    Thank you for covering things id find through 3/4 different videos, this captures my experience using and a great way to show off its capabilities.

    Yeah, it seems many YT reviewers are misinformed when it comes down to what wireless charging is actually for? So their reviews are really misrepresenting the device, and bearing in mind they should know what they are talking about, I suspect that it is not ignorance but simply agenda driven?
    Wireless charging was designed to top up your phone during the day, so you would rest it on a charging pad during quiet phone times and get 5, 10 or 20% extra and maybe do that a few times a day, just to make sure you have enough juice for your phone’s usage. So if you are going to use the MagSafe Pack as a portable charger, that is the way I would use it? So the nonsensical hate from YT influencers claiming it will not charge when using it is moot as that is not the point and nor should it be? When wirelessly charging your s21U do you use it! It was designed to give most users the reassurance of getting you a day’s use even if you are a power-user, say 8-10h SoT a day, anymore and then you may have more pressing problems!
    Of course, most users will just slap it on as a modular second battery at the start of the day and let it be drained, leaving your phone fully charged (90%) once it is depleted.
    Either way it is great product if you know what its USP’s are and understand basic sensibilities, the only issue is whether it is worth paying that $100 for the benefits, and that is subjective to each person, but it does not make it bad, just typical Apple prices!

    It is important to remember that the majority of these battery packs are really not intended to be chargers nor to deliver a complete charge. They were designed and intended to be used as battery extenders for those situations in which you can't get to an AC power source, such as emergency and travel situations. For that kind of transient use case they are very useful and convenient.
    That said, I prefer the Apple battery back. Next best option IMHO is the Otter battery back. With the Otter, I opted for the smaller capacity as it has the same physical dimensions as Apple's unit, which feels about right. Larger form factors start to feel wonky in the hand. Sure, the magnet is not as strong on the Otter, and it obviously will not have the IOS integration like the Apple units. However, it does not suffer the heat issues associated with the Anker units nor the size issue associated with the Mophie unit. While I do like the Mophie at first blush, its larger form factor is problematic with the iPhone 13 Pro. In that pairing, the Mophie will bump right up against the camera array. Hence, if you have a case that protects the camera array, the Mophie will not fit correctly.
    Finally, there is also some benefit to third party offerings that Apple's unit lacks, which is the ability to charge just about anything via the USB C port. So, for me having one Apple unit and one Otter unit covers just about all my use cases and allows me ample auxiliary power when necessary.

I put it on the iPhone when it’s fully charged at 100% and it will keep the iPhone charged at 91% all day and that’s what it’s designed to do until it goes flat and it’s saved the the condition of the iPhone battery and it’s still showing 99% in the battery condition on the iPhone settings and I’m not light on the battery.

    I had both the Anker and Mophie battery packs and had to return them both as they would get hot when used on my phone and was too warm in my pocket. The Apple magsafe pack dos not do that and has been easy and convenient to use. I decided to get a battery pack after being out in the streets of NYC sightseeing and my battery dying on me and trying to find a battery pack I could put in my pocket at the time was not happening.

It’s great that you debunk other videos like the iPhone sliding off or shaking violently to detach the battery. I had the Anker and while I really like Anker stuff, it was way to thick for me. Apologies if someone mentioned this before but one reviewer mentioned that the non-apple battery packs will make the phone think it is plugged in and started downloading updates to apps etc as well as using full power which will drain the batteries faster and make the phone heat up….. not sure who said that… Rene Richie maybe…

      This is true, which is the reason I decided to go with apples. Apples is also slim enough to stay in your pocket all day attached to the phone. Remember the apple one is supposed to stay on your phone the whole time. Don’t attach it when your phone gets low.

    I think if the price point we’re lower it wouldn’t have caused as much issue. Because we often forget that since it has pass through it essentially makes it an expensive magsafe puck that can also become a mobile battery pack… I say it that way because of the need to be plugged in to the lightning port to use it’s full charging capabilities…making it seem more like it’s actual default rather than the other way around.

    Nice positive take on this.... I bought on for my wife, but she didn't like it. I had to return it. She worried it would not keep her iPhone 12 Pro going. She wanted to see the battery level of the iPhone increase while using it with the battery connected, but it didn't; it went down. She saw a reviewer's test where they connected a full battery to a phone with only 1 % and put it under a load.... it died. That was the deal breaker for her. If only it had a burst mode for cases like this...

      It is not meant to be used when your phone is at 1%? How many people use their phone when they wirelessly charge? Zero as it is stuck on a charging pad. Some common sense is needed. If you are going to use it to recharge your phone, not the real purpose of this, then in quiet times when the phone is idle, slap the pack on for an hour or so. Do that 2-3 times a day to keep your phone topped up. This was the MO for wireless charging, convenience of top-ups during the day!

    • @figjoy
      @figjoy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@andyH_England I get your point, the number probably isn’t zero however… I suppose you’ve never had your phone die, but some people sometimes forget to top up. Others are in the habit of using a wired battery for use in a pinch. I get it that this product isn’t that. That was my point.

    It didn’t help my phone stay on though. Because of how slow it charges, battery percentage still went down as I was using the phone at a fast enough rate that it didn’t save my phone from dying before getting home sometimes.

    I just got an iPhone 12. I was considering buying a puck along with a clear case. But I like to have options when I travel so I was comparing accessories. Your point about how if this is plugged in it’s basically a puck but portable just sold me really. No puck needed. When I’m home I’ll just plug my phone in. When I go abroad this battery pack gives me options and just helps prolong the life of my phone through the day.

  • @Bazzzzzinga
    @Bazzzzzinga 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The third party options do not miss out on the software integration because of the MagSafe Battery being purpose build for the iPhone its because Apple does not allow for that software integration on third party products. That is Apple marketing strategy at work there and not a genius move of designing something for the iPhone specifically. All the third party products use the MagSafe what else where they build for except an iPhone? You did change my mind on the capacity though. I think your points are very good and valid there.

    It's over $100 in Australia. I was going to get it but I usually aim for power battery back around 5000 mAmH. I worked out that it was enough to keep my iphone working when I'm out all day (eg diving, travelling etc). I have been using the old fashion wired portable charges, and not thinking about magsafe but recently bought the anker MagGo. Actually it's not too bad; it's cheaper that the apple one... in the US... but it's not available in Australia, so it ends up costing twice as much (due to shipping and less availability). The apple one is $139 vs anker $273. I was probably stupid but I bought the anker. It seems good but I hope to use it for years. I only really use portable chargers when I'm out the whole day (and usually this is when I'm travelling/on holidays). At work, I'd charge my phone at the desk etc.

    Thanks for the review. Recently bought this at a steep discount (30%). Most of the other third party Brands have higher cap, but they become hot easily. Kinda misses the point of a battery pack. To keep the iPhone alive rather than charging to the max as fast as possible.

    I mean I got a cheap 3rd party magsafe battery pack on amazon. 10000mah. It charges at 15w, triggers the magsafe circle charging animation, and fills up my whole iPhone 12 in 2.5 hours. Twice. It also shows the battery percentage in an LED display at the bottom and has a usb c and usb a port to charge other devices with wires. Maybe it'll stop working in a few months, idk. But so far I absolutely love it. Gets slightly warm, but nothing like the searing heat of the official apple MagSafe wired charging puck lol. It is kind chunky, but I don't mind. All I'm saying is, shop around people. Don't have to settle for the official accessory just because it is more expensive and has 2-3 nifty integrated software features.

    You are right about the partial charge. In reality it’s not a big deal if it doesn’t fully charge your iphone as long as you have enough juice till you arrive home.
    However, you are wrong about the slow charging speed. It IS annoying because it means you have to carry that bulky thing attached to your iPhone for hours to get a decent charge.

  • @illien_3915
    @illien_3915 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    This has been the only battery pack I didn’t hate using.
    cabled banks ruin the portability and experience;
    battery case adds bulk and even more inconvenience;
    10000mA ones takes forever to top up once emptied;
    the ones that can’t double as a good phone charger when plugged in are extra hassle to top up separately;
    the ones that charged fast always heat up the phone.
    And all of them looked god awful.
    Which leaves magsafe banks as the only solution. Neither anker nor mophie offers 15w charging when plugged in, nor reverse charging. While I wouldn’t care for the magsafe animation, needing to manually turn them on and not being able to see detailed battery life do make for a worse experience.
    I used to want fast charging and big capacity on battery packs because the horrible ergonomics, guaranteed overheating and hassles makes me want to remove them ASAP. None of that is an issue here.
    It seems Apple actually thought about how to make a good experience out of battery packs, I guess haters just don’t have the braincells.
