    No stage show...
    No dancers...
    No backing tracks...
    No lip-syncing...
    No choreography...
    No special effects...
    No audio trickery...
    No Auto-Tune...
Just a man... and his guitar...
    Priceless!!!

Empty Chairs is a beautiful, heartbreaking love song. I cannot listen to Don's song Crossroads without sobbing uncontrollably. Same for this song. I can only listen to "Vincent" when I am feeling particularly strong. Otherwise, the words just destroy me. Don captures Vincent Van Gogh's pain so eloquently that we feel it, too. The sensitivity and expressiveness that Don conveys in his songs are rare gifts, and we are very fortunate that he has shared them with us for many, many years. Thank you, Don.

A beautiful person I once knew introduced me to these two songs; most importantly If We Try. A message. Wasn't more than 15 or 20 seconds into it just now and my eyes started welling up. If you're out there, somewhere, Hey, 'Gate Hopper', know you are missed. I hope you are well and truly happy. Thanks for everything.

I 've seen Don Mclean live more than other artist and I 've seen a lot of artists but for me there is no one greater. To walk on stage with just an acoustic guitar, banjo and his voice and entertain tens of thousands of people is truly magnificent, a great singer, a great musician and great composer.................he really has everything. As my time comes to an end I look bacck
    with admiration of this man.

When I see you on the street, I lose my concentration.
Just the thought that we might meet creates anticipation.
Won't you look my way once before you go
And my eyes will say what you ought to know.
Well I've been thinkin' about you day and night...
And I don't know if it'll work out right...
But somehow I think that it just might... if we try.
Faces come and faces go in circular rotation.
But something yearns within to grow beyond infatuation.
Won't you look my way once before you go
And my eyes will say what you ought to know.
Well you've got me standin' deaf and blind...
Cause I see love as just a state of mind...
And who knows what it is that we might find... if we try.
You're walking a different direction from most people I've met.
You're givin' me signs of affection I don't usually get.
I don't want you to pledge your future the future's not yours to give.
Just stand there a little longer and let
    Me watch while you live.
'Cause when I see you on the street, I lose my concentration.
And just the thought that we might meet creates anticipation.
Won't you look my way once before you go
And my eyes will say what you ought to
    Know.
Well I've been thinking about you day and night...
And I don't know if it will work out right...
But somehow I think that it just might... if we try.

Don Mclean was one of a kind - a giant of creative energy and an amazing poet and songwriter. Not to mention he had a great voice and was a superb guitar player. Basically he was the whole package. He really did not need a backup band. Notice how he fills up the auditorium just by himself.

Met Don after a Sydney concert back in the early eighties. I spoke to him for about 20 minutes while he signed autographs. He was, in real life, just as he is in his songs, a truly nice, humble and caring person. Who else could have penned such wonderful songs, which touch everyone's heart so profoundly? His song 'Empty Chairs' hit a real spot for me after a relationship ended. He sort of captured the feelings I was experiencing. He goes to those places that really hurt and sooths your pain.

    • @randilevson9547
      @randilevson9547 ปีที่แล้ว

You echoed my thoughts exactly. The unbearable pain of lost love is something that Don understands completely. He takes our collective pain and turns it into poetry. I think one of Don's many gifts is his empathy, which can make us feel less alone as we experience grief. 'Empty Chairs' just destroys me. So do 'Vincent' and 'Crossroads.' You were so lucky to get to speak to Don for as long as you did.

  • @crisguia

I love his live performances. His studio recordings are wonderful, but they can't beat hearing and watching him perform live, then and now. And even though I normally don't like it when singers change the way they sing their muchloved songs at concerts, I don't mind it so much when Don does it like in this video. His songs are so beautiful that no matter how he sings them they stay beautiful. And his guitar playing is truly excellent.

The worlds best guitar playing poet. Empty clothes that drape on empty chairs. I just love that this guy is so unpretentious with his prodigious talent that I have been gifted to listen to since the 70s. The tapestry album, his first; is still timeless magic. Every crisp leaf that falls, all the flowers that grow; on this colourful tapestry .somehow they know.. I remember watching this very program on a black and white TV in Cork City back in 1975. I set up my little Panasonic tape recorder in front of the TV and recorded it. Those were simpler times. The whole concert was great. He was (and probably still is) a poet with an amazingly clear voice and a wide range.

Empty Chairs Lyrics (below). Every word is perfectly chosen in this beautiful poem. It's so rare and I hate to say that they don't make lyrics like this anymore. Well done Don McLean.
I feel the trembling tingle of a sleepless night
Creep through my fingers and the moon is bright
Beams of blue come flickering through my window pane
Like gypsy moths that dance around a candle flame
And I wonder if you know
    That I never understood
That although you said you'd go
Until you did I never thought you would
Moonlight used to bathe the contours of your face
While chestnut hair fell all around the pillow case
And the fragrance of your flowers rest beneath my head
A sympathy bouquet left with the love that's dead
And I wonder if you know
    That I never understood
That although you said you'd go
Until you did I never thought you would
Never thought the words you said were true
Never thought you said just what you meant
Never knew how much I needed you
Never thought you'd leave, until you went
Morning comes and morning goes with no regret
And evening brings the memories I can't forget
Empty rooms that echo as I climb the stairs
And empty clothes that drape and fall on empty chairs
And I wonder if you know
    That I never understood
That although you said you'd go
Until you did I never thought you would

Can't agree more. I met him outback of the Sydney Entertainment Centre after a concert and he was such a nice, quietly spoken, humble guy. We spoke for about 20 minutes and he was so nice. His lyrics and beautiful music touch your heart. That's why after seeing him perform, Roberta Flack wrote "Killing me softly with his song". I shed many a tear over 'Empty Chairs' after a relationship ended, I even learned how to play it on the guitar. He, James Taylor and John Denver are my big three.

Superb! I saw 6 concerts on the 75 UK tour including four nights in a row, Sheffield, Manchester, Croydon and the RAH. A superb performer I learned a lot from . A different set every night except for Bronco Bill's Lament as the opener and American Pie/ Vincent as the finishers prior to the numerous encores. In Manchester he played a long set of banjo songs and tunes but only Babylon the next night in Croydon. Every show was mesmerising.

A few years back Don headlined our summer folkie festival. Since I suffer from depression and at times a problem with crowds- so I didn't go, even though it's free and along with Leonard Cohen (R.I.P.), John Prine (R.I.P), Donovan, of course, Dylan, Nick Drake, Bert Jansch both deceased, sadly and a Canadian like me! underrated Bruce Cockburn, too many others to list, oh, I must include Joan Baez and Joni Mitchell, Don is one of my heroes! I live only a block from the park, so I got my glass of wine and sat waiting in proverbial anticipation! From my old wicker chair I could hear several generations yelling/singing: bye, bye, Miss American Pie...it was bliss! Kids who sadly grew up thinking Rap and shopping, preferably on line? How sad, I just discovered PARIS STILL HAS RECORD STORES WITH HEADPHONES AT EACH SECTION...Don, my partner later told me, his eyes still shining with the adrenaline rush, had spoken not nastily, but slightly annoyed and baffled about "what's with Generation Z(?) . I've lost track and as a bookworm too, I am fed up with fricking not anacronyms- maybe? Migraine, shouldn't be on here, glare !! but I need sustenance and he's a great source of comfort. Everything reduced to a few LETTERS, no hyphens etc.! allowed! Where I reside, one can't call it "living" yes, my own fault for staying in a city I loathed from the first moment I saw it, but life does present obstacles from time to time, to use a hackneyed cliché, itself a hackneyed cliche- so I stayed and am now too broke to run away to Paris and open a Gypsy Tea Room, I am a bohemian but hanging precariously by one frayed tassel! I feel as though I threw away my life- who said, "youth is wasted on the young"- Mark Twain, Oscar Wilde? You don't really dig that until it's too late! If you are young, follow your heart, your gut instincts- as long as you don't cause hurt to anybody, as Nina Simone would say: for God's sake...can't remember BUT you know how angry and emphatically spot on she was- Namaste ( sorry for my overly long babble, the provenance of the lonely- I bought this album not for American Pie but for VINCENT- I hope the afterlife is arranged?! so that contact with our old life is possible; Vincent's ghost/spirit has to be able to hear that song- Namaste from a Bewildered Old-er Human. ( I had started to say where I reside, the officials in charge have removed penmanship, cursive from the curriculum!!!!!)

The purpose of life, "recognise your gift, and give."
How many can say they ever did?
Most of us are fooled by the narrative of getting what we can from life.
Don must have been truly happy.

He just needs a guirar. The rest is his inspiration and talent. Someone I loved very much ibtroduced me to this exceptional artist. When he was born the muses were watching over him. He is timeless. In a few chosen words he can make us experience a lifetime of emotions. You've got it all, Don.
