One of the twenty or so greatest songs of the 20thCentury. The melody is exquisite, full of feeling and emotion and exaltation yet the singer's voice remains detached, matter of fact almost cold - never succumbing to that emotional tide (and so enhancing and complimenting it), the flow of the song is so natural.. this is sublime.
He is own man. His songs made me want to be a better guitar player. Back when you had to order sheet music i saved to get this. As i got better i could figure out the songs without the sheet music. But his lyrics and melodies are special.

I saw Don McLean in Belfast several years ago. The most wonderful concert I've ever been to; Mr McLean is such a gentle man, he couldn't get off the stage. When he finally left it was to a standing ovation. Great writer, great performer, real gentleman. If you ever get the chance go and see him sing live. It will be an unforgettable experience:)
Castles In The Air is such an aspirational song that I think everybody at some time another wants to escape to a much simpler life than we lead now. His words and melody roll like the hills he recedes to in his efforts to get real and no longer live the fascade of our "status" focussed society. The man is a genius of lyric and plectrum.
My parents split in 1982. I was 5 years old and it was rough. They had a tough road at times. This is my dads song. I think it was always his aspiration. He played it many times. Stayed with me. Well, somehow they reconciled and in 1998 it turned to shit again. And again, they came back. 51 years now and while those Castle’s in the Air was probably his true feelings; they found a way and truely love each other more than ever. I don’t know how. I can’t but then love did concur all. Now he’s 77 and battling with his health. And my mum, there caring for him. What I can say. I always wonder what kept them together. After all these years, I see it. Despite it all, it’s there. It’s not explainable. It just is. This song is a masterpiece. Don, if only you knew what this song has meant. To me and my parents. Thank you somehow.

You're %100 on the mark. There's no discernible downbeat, the bass player is waaaay to busy. The guitar player, rather than playing to the melody, McLean's phrasing, and choosing his notes (less), seems to be playing by himself. The tone on the Strat isn't complementing McLean's Martin. Those 12 fret to the body Martin slopes can be a cannon of sound all by themselves. That, along with McLean's more than adequate solo accompaniment, calls for a far less strident guitar tone (Clapton's Layla tone), and fills. McLean's vocal tone is also one of a more nasal quality, easily cutting through any mix. That, and {his} playing, should have been the first consideration of whoever was doing sound, and the musical arrangement for backing him. Any of Gordon Lightfoot's past backup players... would've made this sound like a symphony.
I once knew someone who loved this song, way back at the start of the 1970s. I didn't. But now I do. Nearly 50 years on! WTF, I ask myself! This tune is timeless.

I completely agree with CJT.......this is a much under-rated composition of McLean's - a rich girl/poor boy 'love across the class divide' which many artists have tried to cover (such as Rod Stewart's "Lady Day" from 1970's album Gasoline Alley). Though the B side of "Vincent", this track was originally from his album "Tapestry". On his superb 1976 live album "SOLO", McLean merges this beautiful song with "Three Flights Up" (another song from "Tapestry") in a heartbreaking yet superb delivery ....dig it out.... it;s well worth it !

The 1981 version was a chart success and reached #37 on the Billboard charts and received extensive airplay. Don was invited to sing it in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade. It is the successful 1981 version that has given the song its enduring popularity in the years since.

The RIAA has certified it as one of the most played songs of all time on the radio--more than 3 million airplays and in the same airplay rankings as some of Elvis and the Beatles' tunes.
I like this live version even better. Mclean is at the pinnacle of lyrcism. I wouldn't say no one else is as good, but I will say that no one else is better. Amazing song writing.

I love his songs from this era, I only wish it were longer-lived. It seems after his few gigantic hits like this one, he just stopped writing or stopped writing songs like this, American Pie, Vincent etc. Why did he stop !?

@woodinhead62 When you say "original" which one?...Don recorded a mostly acoustic version on his debut album as a young man, then he "re-recorded it" for the the "Believers" Lp in 1983. I like the "Believers" version the best.

I prefer the 1981 version much better than this early 70’s version. It is probably because I am so used to hearing that version. Also that version always brings back all those memories of late 1981 and early 1982. It was one of my most memorable period of my life.

This son is dedicated in Feb 2018 to the 26 y.o . I like this live version even better. Mclean is at the pinnacle of lyrcism. I wouldn't say no one else is as good, but I will say that no one else is better. Amazing song writing.

Yes...this is one song from an entire show that Don did with the guitarist you mention. Some here have said they believe it is a young Rick Springfield
NOT AT ALL. I saw him perform at Carnegie Hall in 1981 and he also did an a capella encore of "Stardust"
@woodinhead62 When you say "original" which one?...Don recorded a mostly acoustic version on his debut album as a young man, then he "re-recorded it" for the the "Believers" Lp in 1983. I like the "Believers" version the best.

I prefer the 1981 version much better than this early 70’s version. It is probably because I am so used to hearing that version. Also that version always brings back all those memories of late 1981 and early 1982. It was one of my most memorable period of my life.

This son is dedicated in Feb 2018 to the 26 y.o . French RN I met in a very fraudulent facility in San Francisco called San Francisco Health Care and Rehab Center owner by a mafia Russian family last name Stokov who treat register nurses, LVN , and CNA like pieces of a machine to make money with medical state and federal insurances while giving poor care to indigent residents , The facility have mice, roaches, stingy food with no flavor that many residents hate. However, Marie Anne has a great education in France and USA and wanted to get clinical experience ignoring what is stated above... Why this song has connection with what I introduce in this comment? Because Marie Anne impacted me and I became immediately fascinated for her. I don't know what but I love her in a good sense and this song has the right lyrics to explained since she was interested in a short affair with me...but I am too romantic and realist in terms of my personal dreams and plans since I am 64 y.o and she is 26 although I look more younger...Je t' aime Marie Anne Cherie... Many thanks for this, but personally I prefer the Album version which I think is just Don McLean accompanying himself on guitar. I find the backing guitarist however good he undoubtably is, a trifle annoying.
