Don is a paradox - - He is well known for a few songs, but is rather unknown for the totally beautiful voice he possesses. People need to hear more of him.

You're right, Perry's version was the best, but Don definitely made his contribution to the song, he wrote it. If not for him, it wouldn't have been around for Perry to sing so beautifully.
This is a most beautiful song. I especially love the last lines that say,"The book of life is brief, once a page is read, all but love is dead", that is also my belief. He was one of the best songwriters of his time.
I saw this guy live in Ireland about 1979 - he held the audience spellbound for two hours with just a voice and a guitar. One of the nest concerts I've ever been to.
When we were young we had so many artists to listen too in the 50's-80's but when I look back on life Don Mclean stands tall amongst the best,love many of his songs.
the words. the pauses. the music. nothing modern comes close to this. from one man. the words. the melody. the instrument. the voice. paying no homage whatsoever to self. hm. perfect.
... this is just as beautiful today as it was when he sang it here in Israel in '79; I think we all live in hope of having someone love us just this much ...

Don McClean is perhaps one of the most underappreciated American songwriters. He's way more than American Pie.
I can not believe the Quality of his Voice......so genuine and so really beautiful and full.....what a gift.

I really do love this guy. He can really sing, unlike so many nowadays! But this song is just heart felt. Don is an original, and he is deep.
