Rendering old beeswax making it useful once again.

    One of my most favorite things about being a bee keeper is watching the number of bees in a hive swell at an incredible speed. Of course, one of the reasons I like seeing this is because with all those bees in a hive, they are going to be able to bring in a lot more honey than a hive with not so many bees.
    I can't speak with certainty about bee keepers in other parts of the US , but for us living in Southeast Louisiana, we have enjoyed probably the best bee rearing season and now the strongest nectar flow that I have seen in at least 8 years, and to capitalize on that flow, I am working hard to keep one step ahead of the bees.
    Before the bees can store all that nectar they are bringing in, they first need open cells, and to have open cells available, the bees need to produce and draw out wax. My thinking, give them waxed frames so all they have to do is draw out the wax instead of taking the time to produce it.
    On this video I show once again how I render old bees wax, and then apply it to the plastic foundations using a new technique. For those interested in seeing how I applied the wax in previous years, the video link below will show that to you. I hope all are well, and know that I am praying for everyone in these difficult times. Please stay safe, God's peace always. Mr. Ed

      I've seen the Rooster render wax, it's the same way Superman would make a diamond. He'd take a chunk of coal, and using his super strength, compress it and make a 40 carat diamond. The Rooster grabs about 50 pounds of old bees wax in his watermelon hands, and using his super strength, compresses 40 pounds of wax out of the comb leaving only a pile of dirty cocoons to dig out from under his finger nails. You got to admire him for that. Thanks for watching. God's peace Willie.

    One tip. I just put all the "dirty" wax in some bigger cloth. Like a big kitchen cloth. Put some stones in the cloth with the wax to keep it down below water and melt. Most dirt will stay in the cloth and the wax will be nearly all cleen allready the first melt. Just a little hello from Sweden!🤟💛🐝

    On a much smaller scale, using a Kelley Beekeeping model KH100, I place steel wool pads (held in place by binder clips) in the output shoot to strain the wax and it works great. I also uncap in this same setup using the steel wool to strain the capping honey. I keep the capping honey separate as it seems to have a higher pollen content. Health food customers prefer it.

      In all the years I have been keeping bees, I never saw mold this bad. Because our winters here in Louisiana are so mild, and the number of bees is way down, I have had mold issues in some of my hives. Fortunately, it was never this bad and I could deal with it by reducing boxes. Great hearing from you Leon, it's been a while. God's peace bother.

    • @100GTAGUY
      @100GTAGUY ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JeffHorchoff in regards to the mold issue try contacting some mycologists as there's a few species of mushrooms who's mycelium is able to produce substances that are antifungal/antibiotic/antibacterial compounds bees will actually seek out to self medicate. Some species also produce constituents that prevent colony collapse too. Molds are also the enemy of mycologists who aren't specifically studying molds.
      You may also have luck contacting a university that has both mycology and agricultural beekeeping programs and see if their department heads would be willing to come together for some research and or consultations.
      I first heard about this phenomenon with bees and mushrooms having a symbiotic relationship from Paul Stamets a few years ago. If I recall he works with Washington/Oregon state universities too.

Because I can appreciate how much work it took the bees to make the wax to begin with and then manipulate it to crate a hive, to treat it callously would be a sacrilege.Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. By the way, I post a new video every Friday morning, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. God's peace Sheeara.

      Hello dear friends.
      I want to help.
      I'd like wild bee wax.
      I forgot, I'm a student and on my way to an in-depth research I wanted some wild bee wax.
      I'd like an answer, please.

      @@mimoubadisi8316 this is what the world has come to? Lol Scamming people from the comment section of TH-cam? Shame on you. I wonder what would happen if I stood in my garage and told people I’m a car. Could I maybe get new tires for free? It’s ridiculous people are claiming to be kids to take advantage of honest, good hearted people. This channel has no content. It’s not attached to anything that makes them look like less of a scammer. And using bad grammar is often a foreign (to the us) screening tactic scammers use. The logic behind it is if you’re overlooking the bad grammar and buying into the lie, you might be lonely or lack the trouble shooting skills to decide between people and the scammers. I hope all you good hearted people out there leave this situation alone. You’d be surprised at what scammers can steal from you involuntarily with even the smallest detail about you (like name and age, or location, IP addresses).

    Hi Mr. Ed!!!!! It's been a long time. I use a collendar to strain my wax. In my pot with melted wax I'll put in the collander and leave it there. Only the wax goes in and keeps out the slop. Then I'll take a laddal and scoop out the clean wax and put it in pot with an inch of hot water. No more slop to worry about until I'm done all my wax. I just keep adding wax and let it melt. In the end after I've ladled the clean wax I'll have a thin layer of wax on top of the slum gum. I let that cool and throw the little bit left in the solar wax melter.
    One time and that's it. No more straining and re-straining.
    Loved your waxing frames section
    Good luck to you for the rest of your year.

    Mr Ed, cool video! That’s a lot of wax on each foundation! 80 pounds equals 1,280 ounces divided by 500 that’s 2.56 ounces of wax on each foundation and I thought I put a lot of wax on foundations? I know those bees are going to jump on that and go to drawing. Please let us know how the bees take to it! As you know God is in CONTROL!

    • @JeffHorchoff

      It's super heavy, and the bees are going to love it. I have all these boxes marked to keep tabs on them, you can bet I'll be doing an update real soon. I for one am delighted that God is in control. Thanks for watching. God's peace Don.

    As a blacksmith natural bees wax makes the best coating for sealing up the warm steel to help stop oxidation and rust. Do you sale any of your wax?

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did not know that, but I'm not surprised to hear it reduces and hinders the development of rust. I have always had a fascination for blacksmiths, the medium of the craft/trade is just plain bad. As a wood worker for almost 50 years, I know the satisfaction of creating a useful product from scratch. I'm sorry to say, I do not have any to sell as we simply do not produce enough even for all the things we need it for here at the abbey. Thanks so much for watching and leaving your comment. God's peace Ivey.

    Jeff - what you need is a "Spider" like they use in commonly oriental cooking to strain the "trash" out of your wax. Also my neighbor who keeps bees wraps his dirty wax in double layer of cheese cloth when he renders his wax down after everything is melted down he has an old turkey frying pot that he has put a couple drains into so he can press all the excess wax out. Have a nice day and pray you have a successful Bee season

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      What I did not show was the debris that is placed in the tray is on a drain pan. The wax that is still on the cocoons runs through the holes in the pan and dries at the bottom of the pan. I collect all that and render it as well. It works very well for me. Thanks for your suggestion and for watching. God's peace.

    Hi Mr Ed another great video so tell me mate with the bees wax that you rendered the off white wax is the cappings and the yellow wax is the combs so what was the darker wax off cheers

    • @bevandarke2300
      @bevandarke2300 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The colour of wax isn’t based of what it is from it is based on the age so the caps are the youngest wax then the comb so the darker wax would be just older

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The color depends on the age of the wax as well as how many times the wax has been rendered. The more the wax is cleaned, the yellower and brighter it gets. AT least that's what I've noticed. Thanks for watching. God's peace Michael.
