You are the winner! NOT! I forgot to mention in the video that you specifically are not allowed to participate in the contest as we are already in a competition with swarms and contestants are only allowed to participate in one event per calendar year. We may have to change some rules next year in order for you to qualify for some of my future give aways . Sorry about the technical point there buddy. God's peace brother. Mr. Ed
(just to clarify that I'm not stealing the answer, 47lbs is about how much a 12inch by 12inch cylinder of beeswax would weigh and that's roughly how big the combined blocks looks to me)
I am a 70 year old with ADHD and I’d be so happy going through the whole bee process. There’s enough diversity to keep me interested and the straining and extraction is really satisfying! I need some bees on my 5 acres!
I'm 67 and have been keeping bees since 1978. It's a wonderful hobby and helps our environment as a hidden benefit. And I am very fond of saying, the world needs as many beekeepers as it can get. I remember watching you trying to collect all your bee boxes out of that ravine. That was a very sad video and it broke my heart seeing all your hard work just lost. But you bounced back better than ever! That was a hard day and I’m glad it’s over as I’m sure you are too!
Trust me, I will never forget the flood of 2016. But looking back, I'm not sorry at all for going through it as it was the catalyst to bringing Abbee Honey to where it is today. God's peace Mary Jane. Mr. Ed
One of my all time favorite videos, and to this day, I still can't figure why that video has not gone viral as it has never been documented like that before. God's peace Christi. Mr. Ed

I am so fascinated with honeybees. I read a book about them when i was younger, and have been fascinated ever since. I got and now have so much respect for honeybees. I just started watching these videos, and I think it would be so cool to be your assistant and learn everything about bee keeping and everything you do to get honey and what you do with wax and everything else related to bee keeping. Your videos are great and very informative and easy to understand. Have a blessed day and thank you for sharing all your videos with us. 🐝🌻🐝🪷🐝🏵🐝

Mr Ed, I’m surprised that you remembered from last year when I commented that idea. I say it’s 38 lbs 8 ozs or 38.5 lbs. Good Morning Mr. Ed! I must again say that your walking intro tour is as enjoyable seeing the natural landsacpe of your living space as is following your various bee keeping activities. From a natural disaster as your were describing a flood a few years back, a bit of conversion and human ingenuity, and you have created yourself the tools you need for a wax capturing process. I am suspecting that the process is enhanced by quick access to kitchen tools? Here I will leave a guess of 37lbs - 5.579oz of fine bees' wax at the end of a good day! In fact, may this be a start to a Great Weekend! -Bob...

I find it hard to believe that it was cooler in Dallas than here, but I'm very happy for you. You guys have been under that heat dome for months. Thanks for watching. God's peace Leeanne.
You should make a “French press” for the first scum recovered from the kettle. Put it in a tall cylinder with 50-75% water and remaining scum. Get it hot enough to melt wax. Press the “press “ part down cylinder into the hot water. Take off heat and let it cool very slowly (wrap it up). When done slum should be just debris and a nice block of wax on top

Job well done on a ginormous scale. Ive tried several different ways every years. I now use the oven and pool skimmer disposable bags and newspapers for the mess. Only thing I wish I could change is the smell of the debris in the comb during the heating process. Ew, so foul but once I render a few time the final wax smells so good.
You have to admit, the challenge of rendering wax is so cool, but no matter the method, it's always a mess. Yet, upon seeing the finished rendering, it's worth the effort. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

:-) You certainly are a man who knows his beeswax ! It amazes me the bees make their own wax, while so many wasps make their own paper cells and hives. I always wondered why bees make wax instead of paper ? I imagine paper is not strong enough for building a honey hive ... ?
I do love rendering the beeswax, taking what is no longer useful and making it new again. I believe if wasps and hornets had the ability to make wax hives they would, it's just so much more than paper. Hi there. Nicely done. You've been lucky with getting these cookers for free. I use a steam fruit dryer and nylon socks and a bucket and distilled water to achieve the same. Need to melt wax during the coming weeks too.
A real blessing to have come across those kettles, I use both of them on a regular basis. Years ago I used nylon stockings and a 5 gallon soup pot to melt my wax, things have really changed. Best wishes for a successful wax rendering. Thanks for watching. God's peace Daniel. Mr. Ed

I tried to melt wax It was very smelly, difficult and messy & tough to clean, it gets bridle.. But I still have the hopes to find a better way you give me that hope… I think if there left over could’ve be squeezed on a prense we can get the last bit of was left on it..
Melting and rendering wax can be challenging, but once you have a system in do it, it becomes very easy. Great Vid Jeff. I love your wax processing playlist. You need to shout out to us Australian Bee Keepers. Tough times ahead. Verroa is now here on the East Coast of Australia after someone didn't do their job at the Ports in Newcastle. Bio security is trying to stop it, but i think it's futile. Thousands of hives have been euthanased so far. Take care Brother
I am very familiar with the plight of Australian beekeepers after the recent accidental, hopefully, introduction of verroa as so many of my subscribers are from Australia and have kept me abreast of the situation. It breaks my heart the method your government chose to stem the assault with the eradication of so many colonies of bees, infected or not. My personal feelings are the same as yours, it is a futile battle, and now the Australian beekeeper will be in the same boat that most of the world's beekeepers are in, dealing with mite issues from here on out. On my next live pod cast, September 30, I will talk about the issue. God's peace brother. Mr. Ed
@JeffHorchoff Awsome response. I can't even move my hives that dont have verroa yet to a safe zone. Otherwise, im given a ticket by the government. If i do it without a permit, that seems impossible to get. It's like Australia's Covid response, but for Bee keepers. The Department of primary industries have been slow on their response. They're offering compensation. I've heard that's a struggle to get, too. This is ruining peoples lively hood. Take care. Keep on making vids. . One day im a meet you. Steve
@JeffHorchoff Big changes overnight in Australia. They've moved from eradication to management. No more hives are being euthanasied. Im now in a suppression zone. Im moving my hives further away for a while. Not sure if i can post a link here. www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/emergencies/biosecurity/current-situation/varroa-mite-emergency-response Have a look if it works for you.
I’m gonna guess 27lbs. Wish smellivision was real! I’m betting they smell heavenly. Those cappings cleaned up really nicely and I bet they will make great chapsticks and candles! I keep trying to talk my husband into getting some raised bed gardens and a couple bee hives for our yard but haven’t been successful yet! 😂❤ May God continue to bless you and yours.
Good guess, but not the correct weight, sorry. As I'm rendering the wax, the smell is wonderful, but after the process is complete, the finished block smells divine. It's to bad I can't put the smell on video and let everyone enjoy it with me. Keep working on your hubby on getting your dreams to happen, I'm sure he will work with you especially if you concentrate on the rewards of his efforts, fresh veggies and honey. Thank you for your blessings and for watching. God's peace Copper. Mr. Ed
Just watched Bob Bonnie’s how to produce Queens. Totally blown away with the work to take to do this. Really impressed and learned a lot. Thanks for dropping his name.

Just as everything in a hive is "bee made," so too is the wax. It is excreted through glands on young bees and gathered and used for comb building. There is some great info on this subject from google, and they do a way better job explaining it than I could. Thanks for asking and for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

27 pounds 6.4 ounces. Thank you for the video's Mr. Ed. My dad was an Ed also and when I was in Junior High he had 124 beehives in Florida. Once a month I would help him work the hives. My siblings and I were in charge of extraction of the honey with a hand crank 3 frame extractor. Fun days.

Hi Mr. Ed, real nice video. I was really surprised to find out that you had peacocks. I kept peacocks as an alarm system. Difficult birds unless you keep ‘em happy. So impressed with your bees.
Personally I have never had peacocks, however, one of the monks at the abbey did, over 30 of them. Unfortunately, over the years, they passed away, and the pen was unused so I was given permission to use it for the bee program here at the abbey. Mr Ed. my husband says he does not know why you do not use the pan at time frame 20:39 on this video. and use it to hold and catch all the trash in the bottom of the kettle. making it so mush easier to do it all in one shot then making filters for the kettle, the pan has its own filter anyways smaller then the one you used for the throat of the kettle. so it should work even better then what you do now. just his way of thinking . whats your thoughts on that?
The pan that I was showing is my honey crush and strain colander and is to valuable to use as a wax strainer. It's important that all the holes in the colander remain open and using it to melt wax in would seal them up. Besides that, it will not fit well inside the kettle. Still, it's a good idea. Thanks for watching. God's peace Carrie. Mr. Ed

I'm fairly new to this. I have yet to render any wax. I plan on doing it for the first time this winter when all the deartth related activity is over and everyone is bottoned down for the season. You talk about how beautiful it smells. I have one question. Does it smell as good and propolis? that is a smell I do love.

42 pounds and 3 ounces
@@JeffHorchoff if this was a dungeons and dragons game I'd roll an insight check on this reply ha!
I came here to guess 47lbs so I'll just piggyback right on this thread.

Your bee channel is always a great way to enjoy a morning cup of joe and the wax rendering is my favorite, right after the honey processing videos. I'm going to guess a weight of 56lbs and 14 oz. Thanks for the enjoyable morning.
Always love hearing a positive response to the videos I post, and I too am very partial to the rendering and processing videos which is why I make so many of them. Hi Jeff, Love watching you render wax in that big kettle. Wish I could smell it. My guess is 29 lb, 9 oz. Thanks!
One day TH-cam is going to have smell-o-vision as an option for videos, and you can rest assured, I'll be including it in the videos.Your guess was close, but not the exact number, and now you are going to have to wait until September 30 when I go live to find out the exact weight. Mr Ed, I’m surprised that you remembered from last year when I commented that idea. I say it’s 38 lbs 8 ozs or 38.5 lbs. I always love watching your videos no matter if its rendering wax or doing cut outs! If I win you prize I bet folks will think there’s some hanky panky going on. lol I think the winner should split the prize with me… lol x2
Tell you what Don, you are going to have to work it out with whoever does win because it was not you. You were close, but no cookie....I mean honey. Thanks for the idea and for watching as usual. God's peace brother.

37lbs 2.7oz, sweet wax man! I love your energy and the bees!

-Bob...
I do like to walk and talk, and it's great to hear positive feedback on that situation, thank you for that Bob. Your guess was close, but not the exact number, and now you are going to have to wait 2 weeks to find out the exact weight. Thanks for watching. God's peace brother.
Mr. Ed
@@JeffHorchoffGoodness me, 2 whole weeks? Did that fine 628 Dirt Rooster, where hobby bee keeping is a way of life, come closer with his guess? Much can be learned by paying attention when out in nature, whether paying attention to nature, or to someone speaking knowledge. Always happy to watch Mr. Ed, while Hoping that you and everyone else around the Abbey have a wonderfully enjoyable weekend! -Bob...
Super cool video that I just stumbled upon! My guess is 35.7lbs (without watching any future videos). Keep up the good work :)

Would be cool to see a close up timelapse video of the staligmite wax formation on the spout.
I actually tried to do that a year ago, but because the process takes hours to do, I kept on running out of battery life. Beautiful haul of wax. For once it is cooler just north of Dallas than it is at your place.
Love the idea, and I know it would work. Thanks so much for the suggestion and for watching. Just because you seem to have some confusion between the two, here's how I remember the difference between stalagmite and stalactite:
StalaCTite hangs from the Ceiling or Top
StalaGMite is a Mound on the Ground
I'm going to guess 22.8315 kg, which is about 66lb 9.91oz if my conversion is correct.
I do always have trouble remembering which is which, but with your tip, I should remember it from now on. Thank you for that and for watching. God's peace.

I loved how precise your guess was, in kilos, but I'm sorry to say it was not the correct guess. It was close, but not the exact number, and now you are going to have to wait 2 weeks to find out the exact weight. Thanks for watching. God's peace.

@@JeffHorchoff
Hehe, I'm going to confess that I used the math for the volume of a cylinder and the approximate density of beeswax. So I guessed the dimensions and did the math.
I always use the StalacTIGHT ie it is holding on tight to the ceiling to remember their differences.
Thanks for the fun video. You're always so enjoyable!

I really enjoy your videos and have learned a great deal at my 15 month mark as a keeper.

:-) You certainly are a man who knows his beeswax !
It amazes me the bees make their own wax, while so many wasps make their own paper cells and hives.
I always wondered why bees make wax instead of paper ?
I imagine paper is not strong enough for building a honey hive ... ?
Hornets also make paper balloon 🎈 like nests. Yellow jackets nest sometimes in the ground.

Have a look if it works for you.
On the map, im at the edge of the bottom yellow circle to the left. but safely in the green
I was wondering where or how the bees get wax or make the wax they create to make comb.
Just as everything in a hive is "bee made," so too is the wax. It is excreted through glands on young bees and gathered and used for comb building. There is some great info on this subject from google, and they do a way better job explaining it than I could. Thanks for asking and for watching. God's peace.

38 lbs 3 oz combined weight. That is some beautiful wax! I am bad about "adopting" repairable useful items from the side of the road, also.
I also love to dumpster dive, there is so much cool, free stuff out there and all it needs is a bit of TLC and you really have something good. Your guess was close, but not the exact number, and now you are going to have to wait 2 weeks to find out the exact weight. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. By the way, I post a new video every Friday morning, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. God's peace Susie.

I love your trimmed hair!
Thank you Deb, and thank you so much for taking the time to watch the video and leave your comment. And remember, I post a new video each Friday and if you watch enough of the new videos, you'll be able to see my hair grow longer on each one...until the next trim. God's peace.

Fun days.
124 hives, that man worked! Good thing he had kids to help out, I bet you guys loved it. Your guess was close, but not correct, and now you are going to have to wait 2 weeks to find out the exact weight.
Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. By the way, I post a new video every Friday morning, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. God's peace Dwynnell.

Mr Ed. my husband says he does not know why you do not use the pan at time frame 20:39 on this video. and use it to hold and catch all the trash in the bottom of the kettle. making it so mush easier to do it all in one shot then making filters for the kettle, the pan has its own filter anyways smaller then the one you used for the throat of the kettle. so it should work even better then what you do now. just his way of thinking . whats your thoughts on that?
The pan that I was showing is my honey crush and strain colander and is to valuable to use as a wax strainer. It's important that all the holes in the colander remain open and using it to melt wax in would seal them up. Besides that, it will not fit well inside the kettle. Still, it's a good idea. Thanks for watching. God's peace Carrie.

58.6 is my guess! I really enjoy your videos

@@jessicamyers2092 I have always said the world needs as many beekeepers as it can get, and I can hardly wait to the day when you join us. Besides watching TH-cam videos, find a bee club in your area and join it. The all time best way to learn is from others in your area who already know how to keep bees in the same environment and conditions. Keep me posted on your journey. I'm fairly new to this. I have yet to render any wax. I plan on doing it for the first time this winter when all the deartth related activity is over and everyone is bottoned down for the season. You talk about how beautiful it smells. I have one question. Does it smell as good and propolis? that is a smell I do love.
In my opinion, it smells better than propolis, but then propolis smells great as well. Good luck on your rendering, you are going to love doing it.
