Lumix GH7. Going back to Micro Four Thirds? Does it really matter?

  • About this video
    The Panasonic Lumix GH7 is about to arrive for us mortals. After reading about it and watching some of the videos already available online, we guess if this is the opportunity to go back to Micro Four Thirds or stay in the Full-Frame and APS-C world where we live now.
    Reading the specs, it looks like a complete camera, a real successor of the Lumix GH5 but with better codecs, reliability, autofocus, and a modern sensor.
    Are those reasons to switch back to MFT? Should we stay in the bigger sensors league? We reflect on it in this video, take a look back to update you about our production company and raise the question:
    Does sensor size or even the camera really matter?

    I had the GH5 and later the GH6 and now I'm happy with the G9-II. I don't need very long recordings, the heavy codecs or RAW and all those other pro-features.
    For me, the most impressive improvements in the G9-II and the GH7 are the additional e-stabilization that is on a complete different level and the DR-Boost in all ISO-levels. This makes working much easier and you don't have to think about heavy ND-Filters just to get the ISO up to high values for DR-Boost (like in the GH6).

    I'm very surprised to have discovered your channel and see the great looks and footage you have achieved with the GH5! I've subscribed right away! Fantastic. I'm shooting with the GH5 since 7 years and since one year here on TH-cam saying that the GH5 is still an overpowered camera and I'm sure I'm not even pushed my GH5 to the limits yet. And your amazing footage just proved me that. I have preordered the GH7 manly for the autofocus and for keeping my favourite M43 lenses. I could go with the G9ii but the GH7 is still an improvement over the G9ii. I can't wait for the GH7 to arrive soon. Thanks for your amazing video and experience!

      Hi Ken! Thanks so much for your words! I think we have the same view about things in that sense. I always imagine a hypothetical situation where companies would stop producing cameras, or they would release a camera every 10 years. Would we do worse videos and films? Would we stop producing? No. The quality is already out there for whatever we want to do. The GH5 camera is still a fantastic machine to do whatever we want. Thanks for your comment and subscription!

    I bought a GH5 as soon as it was released. I've used it paired with a GH3 for a lot of work, for the past couple of years I've also bought a used GH5s--and I'm happy that way.
    I have no more autofocus needs than the GH5s gives me (still better than the original GH5), phenomenal low-light performance when needed, and perfectly balanced colors when using both.
    GH7 looks great, but if I wanted to buy a new one right now I would probably buy a G9II, mainly for economic reasons. I'm intrigued by the Arri Log C3 profile, but at $200, I'll even go without. Of course, if I had no urgency, I would wait a few months or maybe a year and buy a GH7 at a much lower price.

      I don't think the GH7 will sell well, as opposed to a camera like the Z9III. Like the GH6, there is a good chance we will see a big price drop on black friday, like with the GH6. I bought the GH6 for the black friday in 2022 for less than 1000$ new ! A few days ago the price was 2200$ ...

    I had a GH4 then I added a GH5.
    Then I sold the GH4 for a G9 (as I was also doing photography).
    Then I sold the GH5 for a GH5s and was using the G9 as a B - Cam (both cameras recording to their own Atomos Ninja V)
    Then I got into street photography and bought the wonderful (and little known) GX9 but 6 months later I had the opportunity to buy a Fujifilm X-Pro 3 for a good price, so I kept the X-pro 3 and sold the GX9.
    I preferred the photos from the Fuji and so I decided to also buy a used X -T3.
    So (as I was no longer using it for photography) I sold the G9 for a used GH5ii, especially because I could now shoot in C4K (17:9) on both Lumix MFT cameras (the G9 didn’t have C4K).
    For the work I am doing now this a perfectly good setup:
    A GH5s and GH5ii for video and
    An X-T3 and X-Pro3 for photography.

    The best way is to give it a try. See if you like the look and the new features. Especially if it will be essential for your future creations.
    As for the M43 sensor, it can be very useful in many situations: it is light (practical for travelling and for use on complex shots to frame), generous in functionality, does not overheat during live or long shot, price.... The list of advantages is too long 😊

    The GH5 is still an awesome camera and in some aspects better than both the G9II and GH7. It has better details resolution and Open Gate 60fps !
    I currently have the G9II and I'm not really interested by the GH7, I have preordered but I think more and more I will cancel my order, most influencers never speak about thing like detail rendering, IBIS difference between recording mode etc. With the GH7, the detail rendering in 4K and the lack of downsampled 4K raw (to get better detail resolution) is an issue because you can't use 4k (c4k) raw full sensor, you can use it only with Pixel to Pixel (1,4x crop), so if you really want raw with good details and noise performance, you need to shoot in 6k ONLY. But 6k proresraw files are much too large and the IBIS quality is dropping compared to 4k and c4k. Proresraw is also only fully supported in FINALCUT (Premiere has not the raw ISO and WB tools, and you can't use it at all in Resolve).
    So for now, I really don't see the point to upgrade to the GH7. The G9II in addition is cheaper, lighter and nicer to use. And when I want the best details rendering with good IBIS in 4K or when I need Open Gate 60fps, I still have my good old GH5.

    Nice footage, but I have to question the idea of choosing a professional camera for its autofocus in the age of LiDAR. Separating your af makes you independent of lens mount and gives you the hardware for remote focus pulls when you need them, you can use real cinema lenses with no focus breathing, or even anamorphics. Likewise, I’m doubtful that worrying about internal recording format is sensible - you should be using an external monitor anyway in most cases. The main things I’m looking for from my next camera are good dynamic range and colour science to make lighting and grading easier.

    • @JoseReneVisuals
      @JoseReneVisuals  26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Nice points here! The thing is that many kind of shootings/budgets/situations are better resolved with a small footprint and simplifying gear.

    • @TheGreatAmphibian
      @TheGreatAmphibian 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@JoseReneVisuals A sigma fp with a lidar is still tiny. But you can build up when you need more and you only need one set of lenses for your small and big cameras. I think that’s the future: internal af makes sense for amateurs, but the independence with lenses that lidar gives makes it the answer for pros.

    • @JoseReneVisuals
      @JoseReneVisuals  26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@TheGreatAmphibian The problem is what the difference between amateur and pros is. Many content creators have to produce fast, and they are doing it with internal AF and a handheld camera. If you see the result on screen, and taking into account the amount of videos they have to produce, I bet 99% of us would not tell the difference between using more complex systems versus only the camera. We have filmed projects with two cameras, one rigged up to the sky and the other one without anything, and everything mixed flawlessly. We got paid and the client liked it, so I think it puts us in the ‘pro’ category. Again, whatever suits one’s need, that’s the best gear.

    • @TheGreatAmphibian
      @TheGreatAmphibian 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@JoseReneVisuals I don’t think LiDAR is slow to shoot. The big difference is, again, you’re not tied into a single lens system. That can save you a fortune. And it makes renting rarely needed focal lengths easier too.
      As for TH-cam - honestly, a phone or one of those tiny Sony compacts will do more than most people need. Or a 200 buck, ten year old Canon, if you’re willing to shoot manual focus.

    • @JoseReneVisuals
      @JoseReneVisuals  26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@TheGreatAmphibian That’s exactly what we say in the video. What we don’t agree here is in the fact that some gear or another makes you a pro or not.
