Surprise! Panasonic revealed, last minute, that it will offer a license for ARRI LogC3, enabling the GH7 to color-match with ARRI cameras. This upgrade, while not beneficial for all GH7 users, will make the GH7 exceptionally useful on high-end productions. I've shot on Panasonic MFT since 2014 with the GH4. No system hopping. I've acquired amazing lenses over the years for the system. Definitely getting the GH7 😊
Please can we get Jordan to do a video about the benefits of each format for video for the lower end of usage please. I feel like many people do video who aren't needing the highest end features but still want good quality video who need to know if there are benefits of FF vs. APSC vs. M43 for run and gun type of usage. I don't do much grading for my work for my newspaper (full time photo and video for news) and for my YT channel (direct to camera-product showcase videos). So my need to do high end grading isn't there but if there's a significant benefit to something beyond what I'm currently doing I'd like to know.
Good luck, the fact they opted to go with a full frame sensor package for the S9 instead of just making a GX10 or G100.ii/G110 or whatever with a MFT package for an entry level/"influencer" focused camera shows that they've probably called it quits on anything under pro-level bodies for MFT. The G9.ii was a market test to see if hardware they're already R&D'ing for the GH7 would still sell as a photography focused camera in a market where every camera maker is pushing the line of "full frame or go home" or something similar and most "influencers" blindly say full frame or your images are trash. The G9.ii didn't exactly make a massive splash for photography, so it may very well be the last photography focused MFT camera (OM-Sushi is just bleeding the remains of Olympus for whatever money they can get, there's little to no investing in actual R&D/future technology that isn't minor modifications to update hardware like the OM-1.ii was).

Hope 32-bit support of the DMW-XLR2 is also backported to the S5 II / S5 II X. On my Rode Wireless Pro, it's just great and gives you far more freedom than the audio support on the S5 II (X). The latter requires a LOT of attention and IMHO is a PITA as you also need to keep an eye on the corrent level if don't want the auto-limiter mess up the audio. Now that Model2 supports all four channels (and two of them coming from the new 3.5 jack), it'd be the perfect companion to the Rode Wireless Pro receiver (which also has a 3.5 output) too. Currently, I use a plain 3.5 wire to feed the receiver's output directly to the camera and, of course, it rules out using the other two channels. So I can't record for example the inner mike's audio on the third channel.

No it doesn't. It's basic physics. The standard range equivalent lenses are roughly the same size whether it's m43 or FF. Smaller sensor reduces the size of extreme telephoto lenses, but you're sacrificing the resolution, and also complexity and price. Larger sensor is always better for wide angle, because it doesn't require retrofocal design. And of course, it's physically impossible to make lenses faster than f/0.7, which is equivalent to just f/1.4 on FF. So you are doomed in low light with a small sensor.

So far no overheating outdoors with my G9ii but I'm not shooting the high heat generating codecs either. Nice review, and thanks for the details on the additional video features, including the audio adapter. Keep up the good work.
The weather looks warmer and sunnier in Calgary than here in Indianapolis. Weird. We're in the June Gloom phase with plenty of rainy days for some reason.
My G9ii is a joy to use and actually easier than my G9. Open gate is insane. I can put an entire portable ‘studio’ into a small camera bag. Not giving up on M43.
Jordan, I have always thought you were a very lucky son-of-a-gun to have married such a gorgeous woman. She could have chosen anyone of us devastatingly handsome super-hero photographer guys, but she chose you, a lowly video guy with looks that will never grace a modeling catwalk. BUT when you did the slo-mo pirouette with the blossoms I understood that it is she who is the lucky one. How could she not love a man obviously destined for the ballet stage, but who instead sacrificed his dance talents to help us mere mortal Lumix users on a TH-cam channel? LOVE THAT FOOTAGE :) And I love knowing that you get to go home to such a beautiful family as well. And with a GH7 in your hand as well. The Canada happiness index just went up a notch.
Does it still have 4k Live Crop? If my G85 had this level of autofocus i would have never switched to Canon. But I did keep the G85 around to use for B-Roll utilizing 4k Live Crop. It just makes it so easy. Crossing my fingers we see a G85 successor with this autofocus tech soon :)
@@ProbablyAnAmateur full-frame lenses are too big and heavy to lug around for a travel vlogger like me. So I just use the included lens. With M43 I could more easily carry a super wide and wide with optical zoom. It was perfect.
On why I should use GH7 over S5 is that camera weight is it's body and lenses. Lenses are so light on M43 compared to those on full frame. I have stopped using my S5 on my travel for the same reason. I carry my G9. Heavy body but light lenses.
As an olde worlde stills shooter I found everything Jordan said baffling but reading between the lines he did seem to like it😊 Makes me lust after the G9 II
Nice review fellows. I wish they had made these improvements to the GH6 it took them so long I've already moved to Sony. Still appreciate them listening and fixing everything we complained about. Btw the sun is so brutally bright goes to show that the conditions often effect the image more than the camera. We often forget to get the cinema look we see in movies they have an entire crew with scrims to diffuse direct sun off the face.
It's nice to see Micro Four Thirds is not dead. It's not dead for me -- still rocking an OM-D E-M1 Mark II as my primary camera! (Still surprisingly capable nearly eight years later.)
@@larbueno It's not bad at all for 4K video either. It's no GH7 (or even GH5), but it's still quite usable. I like it for run-and-gun situations. The video quality will give the GH4 a run for its money, and that's probably good enough for me.
Good to see Panasonic hasn't given up on m4/3. This one is not for me personally, but it gives me hope that the 25MP with pdaf will make its way to other m4/3 cameras...maybe a new GX? One can dream😢....
Having a G9, I'm actually wondering whether to upgrade to the GH7, rather than the G9 II - the GH7 has a more familiar body/dial design to previous m43 cameras, and the CF Express will likely be a boon in high speed wildlife photography. That said, let's see what the Z6 III looks like...
@ericaceous1652 I see. If you decide to go tele wildlife for video, you might like the 200 2.8 on a Lumix. They're usually in great condition used $1100-1600 and have an aperture ring that works on Lumix bodies. The Olympus 40-150 2.8 is a great wildlife zoom, too. Both are a beautiful stills lenses. But I'd understand if you're waiting on the Z6III if they offer the video features from the Z8.
It would really be nice if they could include BRAW internally at some point. They have always been good about having ProRes RAW and Blackmagic RAW for external capture. Let’s do it for internal.
I think the biggest weakness of mft is that it hasn't settled into an identity for lenses. In my opinion its torn between two worlds. There's the small lens + low F stop camp with little nift F1.4 or even F1.0 lenses. Most people play with those, end up wanting full frame, and leave. We've seen that pipeline with just about every Gh5 TH-camr. But then there's the true potential of longer focal length lenses which hasn't been explored enough, beyond a few very expensive pro zooms. I'd love to see MFT really settle into being dominant for FF equivalent 100-200m F2.8 lenses (50-100mm F1.4 in MFT). For example the Sigma 56mm F1.4 is a great lens for mft to basically get a 112mm F2.8 full frame look. But that lens is made for APSC originally and now its getting quite old. I'd love to see just how small a lens like that could be if it was truly built for mft, and would love to see 60-100mm pursued at F1.4. The key point is full frame is reaching a dead end point where F1.2 lenses at 50mm or shorter really don't look all that interesting. The bokeh is smooth, but you see that look once and you've seen it all. Ultimately I'd argue the average person would view 100mm F2.8 as more professional than 50mm F1.4. THAT is something mft marketing has never milked. Don't just offer conversions based on size or light, actually attack the audience with why a longer focal length look is cool and create the desire in the first place. That is how it can win.
Panasonic should get a lifetime achievement award. You guys do awesome reviews on all the new tech but film most of the time with Panasonics. THAT is high praise and a recommendation in itself. I've neglected considering a Panasonic camera until now.
I saw a vid claiming that it doesn't matter if you film mft or full frame. due to slowing down your aperture on full frame to get enough depth to keep your subject in focus, mft gets the advantage of having less boke , allowing you to shoot with bigger apertures, sill having the whole subject in focus, but you can keep your ISO lower since you are gathering more light.
Went to a broadcast trade show in London a few weeks ago in the hopes of seeing this. It was a no show and I was disappointed in not being there. This will be a classic model (you forgot to mention the ARRI match) I want/need/must have one.
Almost the perfect camera! Was really hoping they would finally offer a pre/cache rec or even loop recording like the GoPro have in their mirrorless lineup. Such a good feature for wildlife/documentary. As soon as a mirrorless comes with that and 32bit float I will switch from my EVA1 instantly!
Great video - as always... Thank you for all that you do. --QUESTION-- How can I let LUMIX know that removing the "Multiple Exposure" feature from the S5 series and the New Micro 4/3 bodies, was a very bad idea. Where is the best place to submit feedback directly to LUMIX?
Lovely video guys, really enjoy that. I have a GH6 and didn't even know this camera released! Does it have the same high ISO 2000 mode the GH6 does for the best dynamic range? I always have mine set to this. thanks and look after yourselves. Sparky
I shoot live theatre, concerts and dance shows with multiple cameras. The M4/3 is a better choice for me as everybody is in focus. I have two GH5s, one GH5 Mk2, and one GH6. I’ll be adding the GH7 to my wish list. Thanks for doing this.
Brilliant review as always guys. I really want this camera but at $3300 AUD (camera body only) I'm going to wait as I did with my GH5 & GH5II cameras for the price to come down a bit. I was going for the S5IIX but with over $5K investment in a sweet MF3 Pro lens collection moving to an L mount system didn't make sense. Blessings & Respect Gents. Cheers from Western Australia
Such a great review. The listing of the record modes and bitrates with features availability (like IBIS, EIS, AF) in each mode would be very appreciated
I find it funny that it has a host of features ' run n gun / solo shooters - like myself - would want though from the specs I would say the trade off of weight and the cropped sensor would make me choose the S5 - just for more flexibility with shooting weddings and events 32bit float though is incredible and I am glad we are now seeing that in cameras!
Hey, does anyone know if the GH7 comes with an OLPF/AA-Filter? That’s a big problem on the S5IIX (the lack of it.) I’m curious if Panasonic re-introduced that in the GH7.
Thanks sfor covering the video features in-depth! Great features, but it's a pretty big camera for micro 4/3. Hmm, not sure if I want to switch to Panasonic from my old Sony A6000 vs. getting the Sony A6700 - it would have been nice to compare this to an A6700.

The weather looks warmer and sunnier in Calgary than here in Indianapolis. Weird.
We're in the June Gloom phase with plenty of rainy days for some reason.
Perfect camera. Proud user of Lumix cameras since 2008. Never looked back
Thanks for the great review, I'd like to know how is Arri log working in GH7, look forward to your next review.
Me too. An ARRI look???
Ummm… thanks?

CALLED IT on the last video. it was the GH7
😂 you did you did
Does it still have 4k Live Crop? If my G85 had this level of autofocus i would have never switched to Canon. But I did keep the G85 around to use for B-Roll utilizing 4k Live Crop. It just makes it so easy. Crossing my fingers we see a G85 successor with this autofocus tech soon :)
Dammit I already moved to S5 Mark II.
oh hello 😳 something you miss while using the S5ii?
@@ProbablyAnAmateur full-frame lenses are too big and heavy to lug around for a travel vlogger like me. So I just use the included lens. With M43 I could more easily carry a super wide and wide with optical zoom. It was perfect.
@@ProbablyAnAmateur better waterproofing too if I remember correctly.
@@KarlRock is G9ii the better option? thats a M43, albeit similar S5ii body but it'll take the smaller M43 lenses.
@@ProbablyAnAmateur I don’t know. I like both and both will serve you well.
How could I not watch after seeing that thumbnail! Great work, BTW.
I’m in love, my GH6 is fantastic but flawed. This fixes all those flaws, and I don’t have to swap to L Mount to fix them. So much money saved
On why I should use GH7 over S5 is that camera weight is it's body and lenses. Lenses are so light on M43 compared to those on full frame.
I have stopped using my S5 on my travel for the same reason. I carry my G9. Heavy body but light lenses.
Definite on wishlist! Gh7 seems to be real gem!
Great review. Thanks! I'd love to see a comparison video of the GH7 with the G9II and S5IIX please.
I still love and use my GH5, but this new version is a monster! Great review and excellent footage samples too.
Is the XLR2 compatible with the GH6? Is the XLR1 compatible with the GH7?
Great stills camera!
@@larbueno It's no GH7, but it's no slouch for video either. I shot this with it! th-cam.com/video/D01nXctn7DQ/w-d-xo.html
@@larbueno It's not bad at all for 4K video either. It's no GH7 (or even GH5), but it's still quite usable. I like it for run-and-gun situations. The video quality will give the GH4 a run for its money, and that's probably good enough for me.
Nice job guys. Why LUMIX haven’t made a battery grip for the GH7 is beyond me. I loved my GH5 and grip for event shooting
Maybe later?
Good to see Panasonic hasn't given up on m4/3. This one is not for me personally, but it gives me hope that the 25MP with pdaf will make its way to other m4/3 cameras...maybe a new GX? One can dream😢....
Already pre-ordered mine!
If you already have a good number of MFT lenses, I figure you save money getting the GH7 body if you want a video centric camera.
@@AguilaDeOnix85 I have a good number of MFT wide lenses, but not teles! So tele wildlife is all to play for.
Could you please specify what are those "more degrading things" which Jordan shoot at home with GH6?
No.

Is there a hotshoe extension cable for the XLR 2 audio adapter? Installing it on the hotshoe directly makes it impossible to use a top handle.
Sorry a f2.8 lens is an f2.8 lens, on m43 an f2.8 lens has twice the depth of field than on full frame but is still an f2.8 lens.
Wow 32bit float on camera. That's gotta be a first right? How does it do it? Does the MP4 file format natively supports it?
Panasonic should get a lifetime achievement award. You guys do awesome reviews on all the new tech but film most of the time with Panasonics. THAT is high praise and a recommendation in itself. I've neglected considering a Panasonic camera until now.
What lens did you have on the GH7 featured here?
Great to hear that there is still much life left in the m43 sensor format.
I saw a vid claiming that it doesn't matter if you film mft or full frame. due to slowing down your aperture on full frame to get enough depth to keep your subject in focus,
mft gets the advantage of having less boke , allowing you to shoot with bigger apertures, sill having the whole subject in focus, but you can keep your ISO lower since you are gathering more light.
Cameras that can do "all" are getting better and better, can't wait for the S1H ii or the Canon R5 II.
Copped the GH1 back in the day when videographers started using these ‘photo’ cameras. Crazy how times have changed..
Yoooo! I think it's time to trade in my GH4!
I think you are right. It feels like a real upgrade this time.
Yep. Same here!
Absolutely love M43
5:35 Magical Jordan and magical camera!
can't wait for m4/3 global shutter camera
Great video - as always... Thank you for all that you do. --QUESTION-- How can I let LUMIX know that removing the "Multiple Exposure" feature from the S5 series and the New Micro 4/3 bodies, was a very bad idea. Where is the best place to submit feedback directly to LUMIX?
Lovely video guys, really enjoy that. I have a GH6 and didn't even know this camera released! Does it have the same high ISO 2000 mode the GH6 does for the best dynamic range? I always have mine set to this. thanks and look after yourselves. Sparky
Just heard that there is ARRI LOG C licensed by Panasonic for this camera. Not sure about the implementation.
y'all magically put a smile on my face with that twirling ❤
I shoot live theatre, concerts and dance shows with multiple cameras. The M4/3 is a better choice for me as everybody is in focus. I have two GH5s, one GH5 Mk2, and one GH6. I’ll be adding the GH7 to my wish list. Thanks for doing this.
My biggest concern with this is using a cage to rig while using the XLR2. It takes up soo much space up top, can I even add a top handle anywhere???
is there autofocus at slow mo? or is it manual focus like gh5's. also how does it compare to s5mk2 now.
As i gh5 user i want the gh7 of course. I am surprised they did not use thw same body as g9 and s5 do tough
Is the S5 fanless as is G9?
great to hear that M43 is still going strong. May I ask how do you connect sigma lens on gh7? Speedbooster?
Do you have a low light performance review of the camera?
would you recommend this camera for documentary films? i looking for a camera and i wanna use on gimbal (MVG460)
That new audio adapter is nice, I assume it’s only compatible with the GH7 and not with the G9 II
Will the new XLR adapter work with the S5II/x? Assume 32bit float would be a firmware upgrade.
The M43 is alive, and kicking :)
But stays big...
Such a great review. The listing of the record modes and bitrates with features availability (like IBIS, EIS, AF) in each mode would be very appreciated
You didn't mention low light perf did you? I can't expect it to have Dual Native too...
Do we know if that XLR2 would work with the G9ii?
Aah, felt like watching a DPReview episode. Thanks.
Is BRAW via HDMI available or it's coming later / or never?
Hey, does anyone know if the GH7 comes with an OLPF/AA-Filter? That’s a big problem on the S5IIX (the lack of it.) I’m curious if Panasonic re-introduced that in the GH7.
This is such a nerd camera and I love it!
How does the ibis compare to the GH5 ibis?
Thanks sfor covering the video features in-depth! Great features, but it's a pretty big camera for micro 4/3. Hmm, not sure if I want to switch to Panasonic from my old Sony A6000 vs. getting the Sony A6700 - it would have been nice to compare this to an A6700.
