@Zach Higgins I guess it's because this movie spoke for the "mortal"people and for people with issues as well.
People with a lot of money, media, church and corporations dictate our lives with no remorse. They see us either as money bags with legs or as tools for their filthy agendas.
We are all basically slaves with illussions of freedom served to us on every corner...
And we will be slaves as long as we do nothing with it... And I don't know what about you but... I really don't like being perceived as a lifeless tool.

First, I already knew Joaquin was portraying a medical condition...you can't watch the movie and not know this. Second, I researched (PBA) and watched several videos of real people suffering PBA laughter and sorrow before posting my comment. PBA laughter/sorrow looks exactly the same as real laughter/sorrow...you can't tell the difference...so, it doesn't really matter that he's portraying PBA or not. In fact, I could argue that Joaquin portrayal of PBA isn't completely accurate but that's not my point nor do I care...my point was simply that his laugh looked fake, forced, manufactured (to me). Whether he's portraying PBA or not the laugh should look genuine.

LONG EDIT INCOMING: Thanks for the likes guys! For those few commenting with recommendations I wanna say a couple of things- I really appreciate all the love for good fucking actors and performances and I can tell that a lot of us share similar tastes in film which is fab. I've been a massive Phoenix fan for years and I have seen most of his work including The Master and You Were Never Really Here which are being recommended to me repeatedly. He is a phenomenal actor and I am a big fan of both these films but I will stand by that, in my opinion, Joker tops it for me. The reasons for this are many but also subjective seeing as this is all opinion.
But also just wanna say I'm not a huge fan of some of the tones coming through in a way that smacks of pretentious film buff. Saying stuff like 'well you should go watch x,y,z' and assuming I haven't seen films like Taxi Driver and The Machinist (both of which, again, are GREAT) is trying to make this a competition which it doesn't need to be. Phoenix in Joker is my favourite performance I have never seen and I have never seen anything like it. Please feel free to let me know what your fave performances are but don't jump the gun and make it out like your opinion is better than mine.

@@lisabender5208 I completely agree. I left the cinema not feeling a need for violence, but the opposite. We need to be compassionate towards one another. The film makes you look inward at yourself and think outward towards each other. It's a hypodermic needle of empathy that I think society needs.
To go off on a tangent point, I believe the corrupt critics have unanimously panned this film because it promotes a discourse that they do not want people to discuss. And yet, as well as being entertaining, this film, Joker, wants us to talk.
See just talking to someone and showing some warmth like Arthur wanted costs nothing, it's free. And they don't like that at all. I believe the same media that denounce this film would much prefer to capitalise on mental health instead for immoral profits. But look at the reaction Joker has received from its audiences, the conversations we're having, its success at the box office... and that makes me very happy indeed.

Michael Deeks I think the opposite. The public is so overwhelmingly positive about JP’s performance that the Academy would be scared of the backlash if he lost. And pity the poor actor who had to go on the stage and accept the Oscar instead of him when everyone in the audience knows he wasn’t as good as Joaquin. The Oscars is petrified of irrelevance (based on their consistently dwindling ratings) and not rewarding this performance would speed up their irrelevance in the public eye.

To me, Ledger and Phoenix both portrayed the Joker well, though differently. Many have theorized that a good origin story for Ledger would be that he was a war veteran, given the fact that his Joker was a tactician, a planner, very good at reading people and was motivated to manipulate the masses. Joaquin's Joker didn't reveal him to have an aptitude for chemistry, like Hamill's Joker or Nicholson's Joker. He wasn't trying to start a movement, and his aim was not to manipulate the masses. He was also not a sadist, which was revealed in him giving mercy to the short guy in the murder scene with a former fellow employee. Joaquin's Joker specifically goes after people for revenge, towards people that have personally done him wrong. Joaquin Joker (or JJ) acts more in the moment, with his emotions and feelings, not really grasping the world with clarity, and understanding how to get inside people's head ... this is where his Joker is different from Ledger's Joker.
Ledger's Joker when accused of being insane or crazy, said that he wasn't... while Joaquin's Joker acknowledged his mental illness more than once. Ledger's Joker was a planner, an intentional terrorist, not an accidental one. The people didn't rally behind him as much as they knew that they were his targets. Ledger's Joker really wouldn't be seen as the Clown Prince of Gotham, but to me Joaquin's Joker would be, as he appears to be embraced as one of their own. For all we know, Ledger Joker could be an outsider. Both characters work as the Joker, but they are different people with different motivations, as it appears to me. Batman putting Joaquin's Joker in Arkham makes more sense than putting Ledger's Joker in Arkham. Joaquin's Joker does invoke sympathy and some understanding... as he is an abused person with brain damage, disorders...etc... the relationship with a Harley Quinn character also makes more sense with Joaquin's Joker... as he would desire a relationship, but not be in healthy in one -- Ledger is a lone wolf, and having a female tag-along would seem to cramp his style. Joaquin's Joker would be easy for a Harley Quinn therapist to feel sympathy for, and desire to coddle. Ultimately both Joker's have their strengths.

My most emotional scene that I really felt so sorry for Arthur is on the theatre where he goes to find his "father" (supposed to be) while his shouting at him in total dispear: "I don't want anything from you. Maybe a little bit of warmth, maybe a hug, Dad [...] It's me, Dad!" and then this neurotic laughter comes up and he punch him so hard on his face that his nose starts bleeding and cries over the sink. My heart broke into a thousand million pieces. He was like a little child asking for love, even the expressions of his face were so innocent. I felt his lonliness, I was thinking "poor, little baby..." and wanted to hug him so badly. Joaquin made me like this with his great performance!

Fabulous dual interview. But I have to say: Joker as a movie is phenomenal. Freaking phenomenal. I've seen almost every performance of live actors (and Mark Hamill's voice talent ofc.) portraying the Joker, but Joaquin Phoenix really took him out of being a comic book character and into the realm of being a real, believable person. You feel the suffering, the negligence, the pain and you understand why he does what he does. A dark mirror for society and especially the media, but WOW, best film I've seen in decades. A grand round of applause for the entire cast, crew and the rest.
