When you didn't have two pundits telling you what you've just seen with endless analysis that bore you too death
Gary Owens - I completely agree with you. The proportion of time taken up by inane gassing and clichés compared with the play shown is now ridiculous; the play is also in parts speeded up to create even more time for gassing. No more slow mo replays, they're speeded up to make them look like Benny Hill. Waffle: "This is a game they wouldn't have wanted to lose" (what game does anybody want to lose unless Grobbelaar is involved?). "Football is a results driven business" (what occupation isn't results driven? Even burglary is results driven). I cannot stand that wooden sanctimonious jerk, Lineker; he sounds like a six year old reading from a beginner's story book and those contrived words and phrases that the BBC tell him to use get on my tits. "Alan, what price...", "he scored with consummate ease", "peeled off from the far post", "took his chance with aplomb".

Good 'ol Jimmy Hill (RIP Jimmy) one of Footballs greats, sadly missed, much like Ian St John. (RIP). Hope Greavsie is comfortable at least... 🙁

What an atmosphere those old, packed grounds create.
The modern White Hart Lane is a superb stadium, the best in Britain in my opinion, but it still can't match the sight of the old White Hart Lane with packed terraces, like shown here. It's also nice to go back to the era when an FA Cup tie would see crowds rise compared to league games, rather than fall, as we see now.

Love watching these old episodes. Great presenters and great commentators with no need for inane punditry. Also an era when players were fouled and just got right back up and on with the game. Not a Spurs fan either, but Ossie Ardiles was a midfield maestro.
Jimmy Hill was a very successful football player, manager, trade union leader, coach, director, tv executive, chairman, president, pundit, presenter, analyst and referee/official. This one man changed the face of modern football as we know it. He successfully campaigned for the player salary cap to be lifted which has shaped football across the planet today. He also suggested the 3 points for a win system to the FA (used to be 2pts for a win)which they took on board. His list of other changes and achievements in the game are too many to mention.
How has this man not received a knighthood? Looks like he was not one of those Jimmys
These were special times in football, my dad took me to elland rd in 1978 against Arsenal and I’ve been hooked ever since, although I still go every week the atmosphere and the football were the best it’s ever been, just a shame my mother stopped me going as the violence got really bad, I had to take 2 years out and watched rugby league instead..As soon as I was 15 I was str8 back to football and Leeds as it’s my Religion....Loved 80s football, great channel this 👌❤️

Goal of the season from cyrille Regis. Very underrated player. Definitely should have played more times for England I think.
Atkinson considered signing him during 1985/86, but felt his injuries couldn't justify any outlay; especially as he was selling Alan Brazil for that very reason.
scherben I’m surprised he didn’t try and take Regis to United around this sort of time, he would have been a very good addition. Might have given us that extra quality up front we badly needed around the 82/83 season. We probably would have won the league in 83/84 if we had someone like him up front.
@@mrkipling2201 i've no idea why he didn't try and sign him, as at that time he tried to get Alan Brazil for the first time on the advice of Arnold Muhren.
scherben I would have taken Regis over Alan Brazil no problem. Even Alan Brazil before the injuries took their toll on him. Regis would have joined us I would have thought as well. Someone like that might have been the difference. A big strong striker with pace. We didn’t really have one of those type of player.

these are great my life seems to be stuck here, i love watching with the proper old grounds and every one i visited.I refuse to watch any type of modern football with the stadiums not grounds and players on one million pounds for two months

I want to preface this, I love watching these. They are so incredible to me. English Football was not available to me until the 2000's and I watch these MOTD classics constantly.
At 8:17 I noticed the young lads at the fence line after Spurs first goal. The look at their faces tells of a bit of fear as they're crushed in the standing only area. Shame no one recognized the dangers there.
I'd give anything to hear that theme tune again this season😥

Not a back pass in sight. no diving no one needing surgery on the pitch no play acting wasting minutes on the ground endless subs at the end of the game for no other reason but to waste time. I would say the modern player was was fitter on average but thats all.

Greetings from Dublin, Ireland. Yeh had to love the pitches back then. I mean, I've seen non league pitches today in better condition. These conditions though, really separated the men from the boys.

To be honest I think the expansion of (and the increased of importance in winning for clubs) the Europa League at the very least aided the decline of the FA Cup, because now you can qualify further in the Europa League (and get a LOT more money) by simply finishing 5-6th in the league than having to use valuable players to win a domestic cup (which back then would've probably gotten roughly the same amount of prize money)
Plus this was also an era when the commercialisation of football was starting to grow, but was nowhere near at the level it is now, so games weren't moved to satisfy the Chinese viewership and the games were (probably) less tightly packed than they are now.
I may be wrong though, these are just my thoughts

I don't watch MOTD anymore as it sadly has the dull host Lineker & crap pundits like shearer, Richards & Dublin. Seeing this video reminds me of better days when football was untainted by money & MOTD had better presenters who were not influenced by political issues & wokeness.
