@@technodemic6258 Yes, football.Real football, played by real men who just got on with it no matter what the conditions. Not like today's pansies who complain if one blade of grass is out of place.
@@Trev359 Trouble is that when our teams back then, who rightly believed that they'd achieve greater success by passing the ball through the air - since much of the time the conditions made passing the ball along the ground unreliable - would confront Continental teams on their own territory, they'd be outplayed. These days - with better pitches at home and the example of foreign players joining Clubs in England to demonstrate the more universally-acceptable style - we have become the equals, if not superior, to Continental clubs, who are required to show us a great deal more respect when drawn against us. Of course, the same circumstance is true for German, Scandinavian, Eastern European Clubs and those from the Low Countries - which proves that our training for young players is more enthusiastic and comprehensive that that in other countries, and our fans more passionate and devoted in a way that is a joy to embrace.

@@fredpongthetoiletguy9433 I loved playing in ALL conditions - and you soon warm up when running around. But I must admit to enjoying it more when playing in France or Spain, where your passes along the ground were more likely to end up in the right place.

@@technodemic6258 Since when are top level clubs , English any longer ?? For all that mud, English clubs were very successful in Europe from 68 to 85.
This was shown on the first day of colour broadcasting by LWT hence Brian's introduction. Obviously the rest of ITV hadn't been upgraded hence most of the show being in black and white.
BBC Two had simulcast the 1968 Cup final in colour though.
My childhood sigh. Osgood really deserved to be Englands number one striker (and I'm a Spurs fan)..He was so gifted.

Thing is (and don't get me wrong - I'll always think of Hurst as a superb contributor to England - "obviously", to quote The Hurricane) the Germans knew Hurst inside out. He'd scored a hatrick against them in a WC final, for goodness' sake. They must have spent no end of time poring over his every detail since that fateful day. But snakehips they'd never met on a football field - as far as I know - so they'd have had no idea who they were dealing with, and his skill might well have come as something of a shock and caught them by more of a surprise.
Anyway - I'll always believe it was a glaring error on the Coach's part, since the proof of the pudding was in the chunder (of course, substituting R. Charlton Esq didn't help. Nor did the inclusion of Brian The Bone as center-back).
I never even saw the match live (seen a million, trillion re-runs, though). I was in Argentina at the time, hanging out with my mates. Got the news as it came over the radio while driving through the burbs of B.A:.
@@technodemic6258 For Ossie back then re Maddison and Grealish today. Robson & Venables apart generations of England managers have mistrusted the "fancy dans" who would walk into most other teams.

Hoping for a match around 1965 when we made a solo visit to Stamford Bridge as school boys..My friends in class started me off supporting Chelsea..Still at it at 70 years old now.
Better than today's football fast and skillful - and on crap soggy pitches. Best of all, crunching tackles with no rolling about in fake agony...I started watching football around 1967/68 at Leyton Orient, great times, great atmosphere, golden days...
You could have crunching tackles because(for the most part) they were honest.Not studs up lunges at the players ankle which you've got no option but to jump out the way of or get your keg broken.In the those days that would probably have earned you a full frontal smack in the mouth and the perpetrator a booking.More honest really
Today is more trick football with a sterile perfect pitch & a large ping pong ball that zooms around with the slightest kick. This has sped the game up resulting in basketball defending. A perfect sliding tackle where the attacker falls over results in a red card as happened in the last Euros. I don't watch it now & rely on TH-cam yesterday videos from the 1990s & back. That decade was the last of British teams with British players & managers. RIP Footy.

I love games obviously, and this game brought back the memory of Ian Hutchinson and his fantastic throw-ins. I'm a seasoncard holder at a Premier club, and my mate who I sit next to is a bit younger and one day I said for a laugh how much 'we' would gain if we could have 'Ian' (RIP) with us just for throws. He looked completely bewildered and asked why. He also said why bother practicing throws?
I explained Ian could almost, maybe actually reach the box from the half-way line with a throw... I said any throw near the box is basically a free kick into the box. He didn't believe me. This game... penalty spot from the sideline, lol.
He was once measured and his throw was recorded at 112 feet... over 37 yards.34 mtrs

Also, the many interviews with the players after the match in the studio. How well-spoken they are and don't rely on cliches ( as a rule) Rodney Marsh always gave a good interview as did Mick Channon.
Not the usual tripe they pour out to the cameras today... ''' Yeah, I fink it was a good free points for der team.'' To be fair, the foreign players sound better than the homegrown bunch.
Charlie could and did have a conversation as opposed to just agreeing and giving the std answers today's players mostly respond with.

Loved your comment - and story. I'm a Spurs supporter, but this clip served to remind me how many great players Chelsea could boast, back then. All the aitches - Hollins, Hudson, Hutchinson, Harris. Also David Webb, and, of course, Cooke. Not to mention the finest striker we ever produced - lamentably ignored by Ramsey in 1970, with the same absurd "loyalty" displayed today by goat-face.
And as for the interviews....."obviously" (ha ha).

There were a few members of the England world cup squad on the pitch in the Chelsea v Everton match. But it is a mystery how Howard Kendall was never capped. Ps, Charlie Cooke was a great winger.
I can remember everyone's name, then. No idea who plays for whom, today..

15th November 1969 was the first day of colour TV on ITV (hence the Nod to in colour in the intro by Brian Moore)...

Amazing! This was the first top Div 1 game my dad took me to see. Two great teams it is hard to know where to start talking about the players out there. Everton went on to win the league that season and they glinched my support ever since. So nearly could have been Chelsea! Incredible that Everton were unchanged in 13 or 14 games, I think he said? How did they get through that many games without injury? Compare that to the 'modern' game. Not a bad game either. Osgood could have had a hat trick. Thankfully he didn't!

African,Muslim and Female official free. Certainly was. I was there in 1967 and 1992. Chopper Harris punched a black fella playing for Preston North end in an FA cup tie while the Referee not watching. To be fair he did it to everyone.

Give me an England Manager (English only, please!) with flair, courage and prepared to take risks (Glenn Hoddle was getting there. Brian Clough should have been offered the job, in his day), instead of the succession of boring, conventional, dead-beats the England fans and teams have been saddled with since 1970, by an F.A. who clearly are of the same species, and I'll show you a squad of players as good as any on the planet.
I loved Ossie & he could be brilliant...but he had many long runs without a goal.

The VERY FIRST match EVER broadcasted on ITV in COLOUR...The year before, Chelsea also featured in the VERY FIRST match EVER broadcasted on the BBC in COLOUR vs Manchester City at Stamford Bridge.
The 1968 Cup Final was broadcast in colour on BBC2. The first ever BBC colour football broadcast was meant to be the Charity Shield match between Man Utd & Spurs in August 1967 but the cameras failed to pick up the colour signal!
Football was better then without the pressing. The game could breathe.

I was at Maine Road that day. City rubbed our noses in it. I remember several fights the following Monday at school about that result. They beat us 2-1 at home as well that season.
@@mnd1955 It was my 4th birthday, thankfully I'd have been blissfully unaware. We beat them in the cup a few weeks later,I've seen that one but it must have been a painful time being a red early 70s
@@popicorn99 3-0 with Kidd scoring two. Allison was gobbing off because they'd not long since beat us in the League Cup semi-final. Both him and Doyle were saying that City would stuff us and it was fun to watch him eating humble pie. By the way, I always thought that Brian Moore and Jimmy Hill disliked us. The pair of them were always making snide comments every time we were on the telly.
@@mnd1955 I think everyone felt |Jimmy HIll was against their team. I think Brian Moore used to love watching Best, he got so excited. I still preferred Gerald Sindstadt was the best ,especially in Granada region.
There's a few City fans scattered amongst the large bank of MU fans behind the left-hand goal...they had a good view of those three second half goals, hahahahaha...

Anyone know what the first broadcast colour match was apart from the BBC2 colour coverage of the 68 FA cup final.My guess it would be the start of this season 69/70.Be interesting to know date and match
A few games were recoded in colour in 1968 as tests but were broadcast as b&w. Chelsea v Man City comes to mind. The 1967 Charity Shield was meant to be recorded in colour but the cameras failed.

@@randybackgammon890 The story goes that the Man Utd chairman had bought one of the very expensive new fangled colour tvs & his wife had laid on a posh do at their house where various dignitaries could watch the recorded colour highlights on BBC2 that night .Only for the announcer to issue an apology & the recording went out in black & white. Certainly the BBC2 colour coverage of the 1968 FA Cup final exists on VT for at least the extra time period where the only goal was scored. (It was a dreadfully dull game).The 1969 FA Cup final was also broadcast in colour and exists on VT although this was some months before the official colour switch on in November 1969.

Football is so boring nowadays! The pace of the game back then was amazing, no players pretending to be injured and no passing the ball backwards every player just tunnel visioned to get the ball forward and in the net.

Was this the first season where football was shown in colour? I notice they still used B&W for the secondary game.
Indeed, this was the very first "official" day in which LWT had colour TV. They had already recorded some shows in colour, but shown on B&W. Granada TV (the one of City v United) made the switch that very day, but highlights waited until January, and Anglia (Ipswich v Palace) were one of the latest: they started to show their matches in colour as far as September *1971*.

Before the North Stand was ridiculously over-developed, causing the club to slip into the wilderness for many years after Problem was it was far too many years ahead of it's time.

That was actually a really good game of football even though it is obviously a bit slower because of the weight of the ball and the pitch compared to the bowling greens they play on these days. You could see what great players Alan Ball and Peter Osgood were. I can confirm that the goal scored by Brighton at 45:35 was actually handball and I have the still from using the pause button. It's actually quite funny because the ball was about 3 feet away from his head and those defenders must have been doing their nuts. lol 😆 I will try to post the pic here but I don't think youtube allow still pics. What I can do is to put it as my account pic but you may need a magnifying glass or screen magnifier. If you look for the no.9 shirt and then look up about 3 feet and a foot to the left you can then see the ball. 😂
