      weesh theyre still worlds below a decent pair of speakers.
      It‘s just that a lot of people buy soundbars because they sound „better“ (not hard if your TV sounds like shit) instead of getting some real speakers which sound even „betterer“.

    I upgraded to a 40" 4K monitor a few weeks ago and it's great. I had been using 3 22" 1080p monitors on a desk mount for the last few years and this is way better. It takes up less space, gives me more screen area, multitasking is fantastic, and fullscreen content looks great.

  • @NigraXXL
    @NigraXXL 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Yes, moving it back would result in the same perceived surface area than a smaller monitor that lies closer BUT a shorter distance can also take a toll on your eyes, since you have to focus much closer. During long usage sessions it may help develop near sightedness.

    As someone with a 40" 4k Monitor, it is honestly freaking awesome. It's like the difference between writing on a clipboard and writing on a large desk. There's just so much space. It makes multi tasking a completely different proposition. I'll often have a web browser, a text/code editor, a terminal and a video player open side by side. And not all tightly snug and fit together like in the video. Spread out around the screen it makes it feel like I have this giant, open space to work in. It really does illicit that experience of working on a large desk with multiple books and papers just randomly placed wherever seems convenient. It has done more to transform how I use my computer than any other technical innovation of the past 15 years. I doubt I will ever go back to a smaller screen for my main desktop.

    I've just bough this (a bit late to the game) because a certain virus outbreak has me working from home. It's brilliant for that. I installed PowerTools and used Fancy Zones to create 6 usable snap zones on my monitor to display several web pages or remote desktop sessions. I don't game, really, apart from Risk and the odd RPG so paying an extra £400-£1k for a similar sized high refresh panel was not worth it and my desk won't fit a Samsung 49" super ultrawide although that would have been awesome but also twice the price. The only gripe I have is the coil whine if I connect my laptop via USB C, but it's silent using displayport connectivity with my desktop.

    I think you missed a crucial feature of this monitor, the possibility of having 4 different devices connected at once without the bezel.
    Sure this feature isn't that much of a deal for the regular user but for software developers having for example 3 computers with windows, linux and macOS + connecting his laptop or mobile phone to the extra screen and then having all those machines connected with a logitech keyboard switching machines easily or even using one of the products sponsoring you Synergy (you missed a shot here xd) to connect all the devices including the mobile one (android even though not officialy supported) is a big productive workflow.
    But as you said some people will actually enjoy this for a monitor and some people will dislike it depending on their needs.

      And for any reason an user want to have 4 monitores as one. As me, and why? just one example, gaming, for me, as I play FHD and love have other screens as support for streaming, having TS window open to watch it, or even have youtube playing at full screen while playing, or anything else than multiple screens can afford. And the best of all, you have the same color range for all screens, no more annoying different colors between screens. For me having 4 screens FHD isn't the same as one UHD resolution, for working. One thing you can't get is, having a full screen video using UHD, unless you turn off multi screen and use it as one screen.

      Planning on buying the newer model (43UN700-TB) for Software Development too, precisely for displaying 2 code windows (bottom), 1 browser for the web app (top-right), and another window for googling or chat/e-mail (top-left). I can sit 2.5ft away from this monitor, do you think I would be able to use all 4 windows with minimal neck turns and head-zooming? For that workflow, I'm torn between LG 43UN700-B that now has HDR, and LG 34WN750 which is a 1440p ultrawide.

    One issue with this display is that the ~8 pixels on the left and right don't have backlight behind them. The backlight is kind of far back from the panel, and I have it as far back on my desk as I can, but at that distance the parallax leaves those pixels unlighted. I use it for terminal windows with small borders and it was cutting off the left letter. I found an unsupported mode in the i3 window manager that allowed me to effectively shrink the display size to eliminate those areas. I've had the display about 6 months now and really like it.

    Been using a 1080p 46" for 7 years... and love it. been thinking about getting a newer one (4k normal, 1080p gaming) and relocate the current one.
    46" Full HD LED* TV with PVR and SRS Audio (100Hz Full HD Panel)
    Inputs... Headphones, USB, HDMI, HDMI, Y, Pv, Pr, PC Audio, VGA. With a Remote and Picture in Picture, nice and simple but works for my setup.
    Working on other peoples computers with tiny 24-30" does my head in now after getting used to it.

    Of all things you didn't dive into, you didn't bother to talk about the hardware split screen at all (besides the quick mention) which is the real selling point of this monitor. I'm a software engineer by day and a gamer by night and I currently have four 1080 monitors in a grid and it's a hassle to setup, move, and maintain. I've thought about switching to a 4k TV but because of input lag, response times, and the fact that a full 4k display right in your face is a bad idea- I've had no desire. However, this monitor checks all of my boxes because it isn't just a 4k display, it can be used in various configurations like 4x1080.
    ... And yet you didn't bother to talk about it. Just because it doesn't work for you and your video editing doesn't mean it doesn't have value outside of that. I have browsers, terminals, debug windows, discord/slack, sublime, etc running at all times on different displays when I'm working and just as much on my other displays whem I'm gaming.
    I'm rather annoyed. I'm glad Kyle (Bitwit) talked about it (and gave some really great detail) - but I really wanted you guys to dive deep into the hardware split screen that the LG panel provides which gives the monitor value outside of being a glorified TV.

      same thing i was thinking... i got 1 laptop that i use for work (coding and stuff), a surface pro, currently hooked up to a series 7 40" samsung, and - hopefully soon - a gaming rig for.. well, gaming and personal projects and even though i'm planning on setting up proper monitors for that, the option to get rid of the TV, get something like this for when I need to use all of the machines together (happens quite frequently) or just do proper window splitting would be nice.. heck: even have the ps4 on on a quarter and something like discord on pc on another one would be nice.

      Philips has been selling the BDM4037UW and the Flat version of it for about a year now, I fail to see why this video pretends this is something new

    • @anthonymattera4556
      @anthonymattera4556 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is because, unfortunately, Linus didn't go over what makes this better than the other split screen (PBP) display on the market (Such as the the Phillips BDM4037UW and the Dell P4317Q)
      1. Better Input Support
      2. Better Input Lag (Kyle talks about this)
      3. A Better Display Panel
      4. (And the most important) More modes than just 4k or 4x1080 (or strange modes like the Dell has)
      Example: they have a mode where you can have two 1080 displays at the top and have 1 ultrawide 3840x1080 display at the bottom (or two ultrawides top and bottom). This is cool if I want to have a ultrawide display for gaming but still have 1080x4 for development, CAD/SolidWorks, Design/Modeling, etc.
      You can see these examples on LGs website www.lg.com/us/monitors/lg-43UD79-B-4k-uhd-led-monitor
      I just wanted to see this in action. They have both a software and hardware mode for these split screen items and it would have been really cool to see this demoed. He just didn't bother because it doesn't fit his criteria of what he thinks a 'prosumer' is.

    • @Rabidum
      @Rabidum 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Indeed that is very interesting, I have been looking to replace my array of various monitors for various tasks (from gaming to an eizo one) with one to "rule them all". Especially if this has acceptable blur and I can game on it as well as do my work in split screen comfortably (Software developing). Which was rather lacking on both ends in the Philips model with the blur and all, and the horrid menus/software.
      Thank you for pointing out the differences.

    as I have mentioned before: moving a larger screen back might give you the same viewing angle thus detail and size as a smaller screen with same pixel count BUT, it is easier on the eyes since your relaxed focal distance (of the eyes) is infinity and thus it is much more relaxing to look at something futher away!

    gonna upgrade to this (or something like it) from my dual vertical 24" 1920x1200 screens.
    gotta admit I am a fan of seeable pixels + no display scaling and really can use the screen space.
    also, adjusting brighness with two buttons on a remote is much better than crawling through an OSD (aside from screenbright + DDC/CI).

    I'm watching this on phill, as a programmer I really love the screen real estate, a browser on half of the screen and eclipse on the other half. I agree with Linus though, big screens are not for everyone, for gaming I actually run the monitor in a custom widescreen resolution with black bars on top and bottom, so that in essence the experience is the same. I recommend a beefy VESA arm for those looking for adjustability

    I used a 43" Samsung TV as a monitor for about 6 months for software development work. I liked it and I would use it again. The glossy screen was the key downside, so look for a matte screen. A lesser irritation was that it acted like a TV: It would turn off after a period of inactivity. To use it again, I could not just wiggle my mouse or press a key, I had to turn it on again using the remote.

    Moving the screen further away from you has benefits. Say you're farsighted and you can't read something that's too close to your face. Well, a bigger monitor can be moved further away from you without needing font size adjustments. I even went so far as to wall mount my monitor to get those few extra inches of distance that those stupid tripod monitor stands couldn't give me and I'm way happier for it.

    Been using pretty much this for just over a year... it's great for music production. When you're working with Protools it's nice to have the vertical real-estate, to have more sends and inserts, as well as the horizontal space for a load of channels set to jumbo. Especially since in a studio you're a fair bit further back with all the controllers or mixing surfaces you may have. Then again, my previous setup was two 21.5 inch 1080p monitors... though it dosn't feel like I lose anything important when I go from my retina macbook...

    Monitor's are seriously behind TV's right now (picture quality, hdr, etc). I just bought a new "monitor" last week. I had to buy a Sony x900e because no monitor had HDR, oled (ips is fine, but not perfect with their light bleed, etc), 4k with a higher rate then 60 (future proofing), etc etc. Still waiting to see how the new QLED/HDR monitors do. But since all the QLED TV's are edge lit, I am not holding my breath.

      I currently have a 43UJ63 43" TV as monitor, it's 15ms Response, I can agree to this, having a screen at this size makes it very easy to make extra use of the resolution like keeping the scaling at 100% and make use of the pixels. So when using 4k with a monitor/tv of this size it's very versitile and as you said if u want it in your field of view just ignore the top or place something there , like in my case I can program and have 3 documentation documents open at once increasing productivity even with my second monitor

      @robertlinke2666 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      with a 4K tv, you can watch 4K youtube if you A. hook a pc to it, or B. it is a smart tv. and movies depend on the qality of the medium you get them on, did you download it in 1080p, it will be 1080, do you have a blue-ray with 4K, it will still be 4K. and a TV has image processing making the image much better then on a standard monitor, at the cost of input lag. so, a tv is still better. and on the tax, they will allways find a new way to tax you, welcome in the age of of govermental stealing.

    • @riccardoierardi5370
      @riccardoierardi5370 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The thing is, it's not that much expensive compared to a let's say 32", so I don't feel like you waste money if you move it further back. I don't have it *on* my desk but just behind it with a VESA tripod. Gives a nice workspace and clean setup

    I have been using 30 inch 2560*1600 (Dell Ultrasharp 3007WFP) between 2006 and 2014 then did I switch over to 50 inch 4k TV. It was both better and worse. Due to old age I am in need of glasses, but by moving the TV farther away I could maintain the pixel density and have more pixels that's a help for vision and still avoid glasses (for a few years more). The 50 inch TV was flat and limited to HDMI 1.4 and that is 30Hz (290X then a 970), that's not good enough, so in December 2015 it was time for a upgrade to a curved 55 inch Samsung 4k TV and a new graphics card 1060 (I don´t play at all, mostly electronic CAD work, and office stuff) to get 4k and 60Hz (over HDMI). Much better and I would not recommend anybody to use any screen above 30 inch to be of the non-curved type. So old age and its related issues is a god reason to get a bigger screen and a lot of nice stuff come for "free" then (always nice to switch to 4k Netflix series to relax).
