  • First crystalline firing ever.
We fired this batch in my gas kiln and attempted a reduction on the cool down which didn’t seem to work too well, but we still got crystals!!!
Thanks to Casey Anderson for the help!

So great to watch you experience your first crystals -- enjoyed the casual interaction between the two of you and watching over your shoulder listening to the conversation as the process went along and the pieces were critiqued. The crystals are beautiful. So fun exploring new things. 👍🏼❤️

A couple of days ago I watched on YT a potter named Andy Boswell doing crystalline without trays. Maybe something for you to look into. Great job.

hi from canada Mr. Kelly! More Crystalline !!! ps highly recommend cmc gum (1-6 gum to water)
in your mixture as well as nice calligraphy brushes to apply your crystalline glaze

I never did it. I'm just learning how to use mid-range glazes.
They looked perfect, it just drained the glaze a bit. fixes with grinder.Well done.

Hi Matthew - Many years ago I worked with a potter out of LA who has been making crystalline pottery for over 30 yrs. Absolutely beautiful but takes a while to learn the nuances of applying the glaze. I'm certain you'll do just fine.

The wife has a Geil Kiln and it is collecting dust. I have become Email buds with Bill Boyd. Sent him some software I wrote for the Geil kiln and after 8 months, received an amazing Boyd gallery piece in the mail as payment. A lidded jar that is just jaw dropping...

Bill Powell recommended that you don’t use porcelain slip to fill the gap at the ring. (Too sticky)
Any other stoneware slip will do.

Hey Matthew, when you like crystalline you should watch or maybe talk to Matt Horne. From what i know he is into crystalline big.

Matt my wife was just telling me about you doing the Crystalline glaze, I didn't know she has been following you on Facebook this is funny because she likes the glaze and she has been watching you all the time. I don't do Facebook so I would't have known. I have subscribed quite a while back on TH-cam and I know we will get a chance to come your way sooner or later. I've seen about every video keep up the good work. eddie.

So Matthew will the next video show you removing the base ring? Really want to see how that comes off and what type of "clean up" you do. Hope you try the same glazes in the new Electric kiln.

Great idea. I haven’t removed any bases yet because I need to buy a new blowtorch.

Hi, off topic, but just watched one of your videos. Now I'm looking for a video about the wheel you used (sink throwing 2yrs ago). It's in a bucket. Does such thing exist? Thank you 🙂

I hope you know what you're getting into Matt! hahahahaha
This is a whole different ball game.
We have a mutual acquaintance in Bill Powell, he sent me a complimentary piece of his crystalline pottery a while ago. If you want I could photograph the piece and send you a copy?
He is a master of crystalline Matt.
Another potter you might `definitely` want to `look up` is Matt Horne Pottery`. He based here in the UK in Folkestone in Kent. He is also an acquaintance of mine. You would do well to contact him in this new venture of yours. He is another of crystalline.
The other thing to note is that crystalline has to be expensive to recover the enormous costs Matt! You'll learn this as you proceed I am sure.
    Best of luck to you.

Thanks for the info. I’m glad you have great acquaintances close to home. I did send Matt a message a few years ago with no response but I understand it now with TH-cam comments… haha. I definitely have already learned with the time and expense that crystalline will be more pricey. Thanks for the info.
