You could place the camera in-between the 2 players so that the camera always faces the exact same direction when it comes to following the players.

About the camera: jabril’s latest video had a camera that rotated to always keep one player on the left and one on the right. A bit of a compromise but worth trying out if you don’t want split screen

    • @alzahelb6053
      @alzahelb6053 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah i thought the same even tho it would force the players to be in "side view" instead of "back view" it could get rids of the split screen

When I was in middle school or maybe even younger, I had this idea that I would become a game dev. I never did much other than talk about it. I feel like I've got too many things I want to pursue so I'm not gonna do game development most likely, but you've definitely rekindled that dream I had back then. On top of that, the continuous progress, overcoming obstacles etc. is truly inspiring, not just for game development but also for anything else in life. I truly enjoy watching people pursue something they really enjoy. If anyone else feels this way there's another channel called Wintergatan that gives the exact same feeling. It's not game dev, but building a new mechanical instrument he has dubbed the marble machine. Every week or so, he'll post a new vid with the tiniest of improvements that he's made to make it a little bit more achievable. Coincidentally he is also Swedish.
Happy new year Ponty, thanks for inspiring us all.

Hi, a suggestion for the camera issue. If you still want to keep the game with a single camera, what about just rotating the camera around the midpoint between the two players, keeping it so player 1 is always on the left of the screen and player 2 is always on the right. You can add a zoom in/zoom out to the camera depending of the distance between the players. Keep the camera in an high angle so it's not looking like tekken together with the current movement system, I don't think there is a game quite like this.

I'll admit I was a little on the fence about the split screen at first (especially since playing Enter the Gungeon co-op recently where the shared camera works pretty well), but since the move sets are more complex and precise distance judging matters the split screen seems like a good fit! Keep up the great work and Merry Christmas!

  • @rookieman329

to solve the serious issue you addressed by adding split screen (which you hated): I think you should add like a script or an if statement that (relative to the old camera setup) if the character is close enough relative to the X or Z axis, make it invert the controls. and add a message at the bottom of the screen that goes like: Player 1: Inverting controls ( and maybe give it a small timer so that the player can get ready).
the text and font shouldn't be intrusive but just stay there to let the player know when the controls get re-adjusted. and flip them back when the player is in the appropriate position. I don't know, just food for thought.
But yeah, I love your content and the game and I hope you keep doing what you love.

Split screen is perfect for this game. Because people don't see it much any more, it can help sell your game if done well. Also, you should think about creating online multi-player with single screen; but then that is another can of worms. A great example of an indie game that has done this well is "Outward". People love the split screen.
From one indie to another; game is looking damn good. Keep it up because you give us all hope and we can get our games done and out there too.

There is one option for the camera: have it pointed at the midpoint between the boxers from the side. It's 100% imperfect, but it would keep the singular camera with a similar amount of disorientation for both players. Split screen works better anyway.

Since I started this devlog series, I always thought you'd go for split screen. It made so much sense. I don't know if you find a workaround for this issue without a split screen, as I am yet to get caught up with the development of Punch a Bunch. And it might be too late to say this but as painful as this decision is, I don't think it makes your game any less awesome!!!

A good way to tell the player that their punch is fully charged, could be to add controller vibrations as this way the users gets a physical and visual indicator of when their punch is ready but also it kind of adds to the feeling that the punch will be powerful, and maybe if they charge it for too long then punish the player of something along those lines

    Tips for the game:
    1. Try UFC, It's very similar game, so you could get inspiration from it.
    2. Vibrations for controller, when you hit enemy/get damage
    3. Make crowd sound
    4. Maybe online multiplayer
    5. Make UI a little prettier, there are a lot of tutorials of making good UI

  • @itzyalo

Hey man been watching for a few months now!
Thought I'd mention NHL skill stick mechanics, there is an advantage to the person who is going "UP" which is usually the home team for 1 period, away team for 2nd period and back to 3rd period for home team (home team advantage if you play 2 players on the same console)
If you have not played it much I'll explain... Going up is the most native feeling since you get a proper experience, its what youre used to if you only ever play alone, and its just easier to use visually. Up on the thumbstick allows for a shot, down and then up is a slap shot, and then side to side and other motions are just stick movement/dekes.
Now the reason I bring this up is the way the mechanics work is based on which way your team is going that period thats how your controls are designed, now the simplest way to keep your controls would probably be with the camera setup you've done, but you could try optimizing controls a bit, if you play NHL try out going up and then going down for ideas... if you dont play it maybe try watching a tutorial on the skill stick mechanics for a better idea of what im saying.
Keep in mind when watching these are for going up right, so when going down they're "reversed"

I like how your wife doesn't only try to be gentle but gives actual epik constructive reviews (even tho she sometimes punch you in the face ahaha).
My feeling at this point is that the "prototype" is cool... BUT you need to find a way to make it more replayable and get rid of the boredom. Like after 3 to 5 games you're probably feeling "it's all the same" right now. At least it's my feeling when watching. Maybe add some randomness with exterior events or objects like mario karts or smash bross do it. Or more special moves / environment interaction (i remember you were trying something with the rope in one of your previous videos).
Basically what i'm saying is : You need to find a way to make each match special & unique, different from the others in order to give the player this "i want to play more" feeling.
Anyway love your videos and your all time positive attitude. Keep it up and merry christmas !

    a few ideas:
    1. you could make one camera look at both players from the side, that way its fullscreen and also more even for both players.
    2. how about adding addons that make your character stronger/weaker in different aspects? for example, you could have a addon to your gloves that makes hits charge up faster, or maybe one that makes your character move a little bit faster?
note: these addons could maybe affect your clothes colour to show you opponent what addons you have equiped.
    3. if you manage to make online multiplayer you could add some sort of taunt/messages that allow you to communicate a little with you opponent.
    4. make a single player campaign that got bosses with different stats and unique twists (this mode could be with or without a story)
oh, and you should totally add sounds to the game soon, much more immersive!

You should start making the game more pretty, better lighting, better backdrops all that stuff. Great work man!

    I have a 2 suggestions
    1. Decrease movement speed when stamina is low, or you move slower when going backwards vs normal speed when moving forwards. That way it doesn’t feel like your just chasing
    2. Implement the dashing into the stamina, so every time u dash it drains stamina as well to discourage the dash spam

So when you get around to improving the GUI for the player I recommend using something to hide the cut created by the split screen. An example would be to have ropes of the ring go around the edge of the screen to decorate with another set of ropes going down the middle to hide the divide.

the camera could be an event of itself, periodically flying around the players to put the other in front; with this, every time until it rotates again one player is trying to use his advantage of being in the better position and the other is defensive, and trying to „get through it“ while taking little damage.
that could switch the game up and also introduce more skill since it’s very valuable to be good when opposite of the camera

You could replicate the camera movement from the LEGO games. They have a very good camera system. Whenever the other player goes too far, then it becomes split screen, and when they are close it turns into one single camera. Please like so Ponty can see .

Love the epic replay and I think u could do more with it like be able to watch it while navigating at different angles to make it feel more an exciting victory.

You should add a feature where by holding a specific button while using the thumbstick, you can make your character wave his hands around as a sort of taunt/emote

First of all, it's great to see more interaction between you and your wife. She obviously is a big part of your life and she felt kind of absent. It's understandable that she doesn't want to be too active in the videos but it definitely adds a nice dynamic.
Second, regarding the game. You could try to make the camera angle perpendicular to the two players. That way, the player will always face the same way fron the cameras point of view. And you wouldn't need splitscreen.
Just make it focus on the center of the two players, and make it rotate when the players rotate. So if the right player moves back a bit, rotate the camera so that it's in the middle again. That way, if players swap sides, they'll always be at their respective sides from the cameras point of view.

Idea: invert the control internally to avoid split screen. Du whenever a player is in the to your of the screen its controls get inverted. I've no idea if this works, but it comes up while watching the video.
    Great video, as usual.

You could do something like the "rubber band physics" in racing games where the cars in last are faster than the leader's car. Give the losing player control of the camera.

For both players just adjust what is “up” and “down” based on the direction the camera is facing, and just have a check to flip inputs for the punching hands if the player is facing the camera and it might feel more intuitive?

If you think about it, in a game with only one main focal point (your opponent), split screen isn't going to negatively affect much because, if anything, you're zooming in the player's focus on what they should be looking at. So I'd say you've actually improved things overall, in addition to fixing the controller issue.
