Hi! I like your video. But as a fellow Puyo fan I do wanna correct a few things. I'll correct what I'm certain about. And I'll try to make it clear if I'm uncertain about something. And I've had a friend help me out who I trust one this. I'm not calling stupid or anything, it's just the Madou side of the franchise is still such a large untranslated mystery to many, and thus most Puyo fans only hear about it through word of mouth, and by extention. The telephone game. It happens. I don't blame you for any of this. And please don't be discouraged from making more Puyo videos in the future. Here we go: -- It's not Shin Madou Monogatari, it's just Madou Monogatari. Shin Madou Monogatari are a bunch of novels. Simply put: MM: The games. SMM: Books. -- It's important to note that Madou has no defined canon and how its lore ties to Puyo isn't fully defined. Good for speculation and headcanons and some lore bits have shown up in Puyo, but it is very vague. Shin Madou is even more of a different can of worms. -- The Madou Monogatari games as a whole aren't actually that dark. Most of its gory reputation comes from the PC-98 versions of MM 1-2-3. It's only on PC-98 where Schezo gets decapitated (and his head comes back alive to attack you.) The first versions of MM 1-2-3 in the MSX2 (and the GameGear versions after the PC-98 ones) are about as cutesy as Puyo Puyo 1. And you have moments like Schezo Madou Monogatari S, where he confronts Rune Lord in his room, Rune Lord being the person that corrupted Schezo into the power-hungry Dark Wizard he'd become: th-cam.com/video/B-sLVXTgKCY/w-d-xo.html Schezo rings Rune Lord's doorbell... No joke. It only has stray darker moments (like that scene of Arle seeing that illusion of her classmates melting) and the PC-98 versions of 1-2-3 really don't represent the series. But they catch the most attention, and that's how it gets the dark reputation has, but they are outliers. The PC-98 verions of MM1-2-3 is just 1 (yes, just 1) versus the 6 or so others of the series. -- You confused the Madou Monogatari: Big Kindergarten Kids Boxart for the Box Art of Madou Monogatari 1. -- Puyo not referencing Madou-specific lore much in terms of Arle likely has more to do with her being a pretty vanilla protagonist. Her extended background comes from Shin Madou. Which came out after the final Madou game with the old cast was released and not long before Compile lost the Puyo IP. -- I do doubt the claim Arle's mother died when Arle was newly born. You see her in the opening and is an NPC in Madou Monogatari: Big Kindergarten Kids where Arle is 6. And in other games Arle's mom is just a non-entity, you can't say one way or the other. -- Arle is 6 in the first Madou game, not 4. Also technically Madou 2 was developed first and had its demo released first, so if you count that, she was 16 in the true first release. -- Not an error, but the ''wears the same outfit every day'' line is clearly just a meta joke. (Though I like to taking it literally is funny too.) -- The tomboy bit is debatable at times. Madou actually has more instances of her acting girly, like being insulted when it's implied she is heavy. Arle no Bouken has her also get really irritated when a character with bad wording accidentally says she isn't beautiful. PPT's localization also plays the dislikes proper etiquette part up a lot more than the original. -- A HARD doubt Arle's crush on Schezo. The reason she originally called him a pervert is because she misunderstood what she said. Which later became his main joke, saying something weirdly and people thinking he's a pervert/creeper. She does like to push his buttons though. It's my reading at this point Arle knows full well Schezo is not a pervert, but she likes to push his buttons anyway. -- Also doubt on Arle's crush on Satan bit. -- The crush on her kindergarten principal/teacher is true though. At least in a gag manga I scanned, not sure about the games. Arle also developed that crush when she was 6. And I think that the Kindergarten Principal/Teacher only appeared in 1 game and that's Madou Monogatari Big Kindergarten Kids. So if I'm right about that then we don't know how Arle feels about them now. -- I've heard in one continuity Arle and Ragnus were an on-again-off-again couple. -- So, here's the deal about Satan's crush on Arle... That thing about Satan wanting to marry Arle because Carbuncle likes her, that's true. But Satan loving Arle... That didn't come later, and I'm honestly not sure where it started (I wanna say Minna Puyo/GBA Puyo Pop.) Long story short: Satan has had many different stances on Arle over the years, sometimes lust, sometimes neutral, sometimes just messes with her, never has a romantic interests in her at ages below 16, he's not that skeevy. Even as child Satan had different stances on her, like thinking she's a brat, or being thankfull for dealing with Devil. The truly loving her bit is reletively recent bit. It has been a thing once or twice before, but with SEGA's run it has been consistant. The Madou Monogatari on SEGA Saturn is an RPG, with lots of dialogue. Any idea how many times he hits on Arle or any other woman (in required story bits anyway I can't vouch for optional stuff)? 0 Times. He's too busy building tunnels to a local town so can say BOO to the locals. No joke. What you're ultimately saying though is that Satan crushes hard on Arle in the here and now. And that's very true. So... technically this isn't a fact check??? It's interesting if you take that into account when Arle also looks exactly like his dead wife. -- Calling Lilith one of the most important characters in the franchise is pushing it, even with the idea that Satan's crush on Arle ties back to Lilith. And that's it. Again, my intent is just to help out. Have a nice day.
Thanks for this I'll definitely address some of these points in my next video I make about puyo Im glad you brought up the lore not being definitely canon or not completely overlapping with puyo because this is something I should have mentioned somewhere in this video My intent with these videos mostly are to pretty much put this stuff out there as "hey these are facts that technically exist" and then piece them together as my own headcanon I'll definitely address this and everything else I got wrong or I think is worth discussing in my next video I make about puyo
About Arle being a tomboy... She says "boku" which is a way for boys in Japan to say I/me, so there's at least that, but I don't know how much of a tomboy she is outside of saying boku.
Yep. In Madou II the first moment they both met was like: 1. Arle just first looked Schezo and thought it looked handsome. 2. The guy just opened his mouth and showed his manners (specially his archaic ways to talk), she just noped him out and started thinking was a weirdo instead. 3. He, using the antique way to say things in Japanese, he says something that in modern Japanese can be interpreted as "I want you" (in the sense "I like you") but said in a vicious way, which made to Arle think he's a pervert and just rejected him even more. Later on, she just put him on nerves constantly because she finds him funny when it gets angry.
5:10 My best guess here is that with Puyos implied to supply magic for those who pop them, I feel that the chains are exactly what helps her spam attacks. So as long as she keeps one going, she'll always have a reserve magic without needing to resort to her natural magic.
Doppelganger Arle is a remnant from the old world as well; the world of the newer Puyos takes place in a different world than the original Madou Monogatari series because in the end, that world is destroyed ... In Puyo Puyo N when she mentions she is Arle, nothing more and nothing less, the layers of meaning in that phrase suddenly come crashing down hard.
Yep! The newest Arle is specific to the Puyo spinoff. Madou Arle watched her classmates melt, cut enemies' heads off, became a homeless orphan with one change of clothes, fought off Satan's advances because "You don't understand, Officer, she consented in a past life!" and then stewed in loneliness and suspended animation for 500 years when Satan remade the world into Puyo World.
Her parents were born with powers but Arle herself wasn't... I wonder what those powers were. As for that Ice Storm part I think the problem came from the fact she was spamming Ice Storm and ONLY Ice Storm, probably because the previous dungeon rendered Fire too dangerous to use.
so i heard from someone that we are actually going to get a new madou monagatari game next year. so thats exciting. also only thing wrong here is that fever was a reboot. soft reboot sure as the need to know the lore kinda vanished but like pokemon black and white the lore still maters and is still cannon and referenced in the modern games if you look for it hard enough
amazing video! i'd love to see the follow up. also, iirc, shin madou monogatari is the name of the novel being madou monogatari the name of the games. even then, most lore is found there anyways. i wouldve liked to hear about the creation of the puyo world and the destruction of the madou world but guess it'll wait cheers
I REALLY DID NOT KNOW that Lilith was something that exists and sheezus it makes me think that my Arle theory is not really out there. Mainly that I believe Arle accidentally made a whole new universe which is the universe from Fever from the time she made Puyo a thing in her world. I always headcanon that the Fever rules are from how that world is strong with Puyo the most, that Fever mode brings out a temporary but unlimited source of magic that people are able to tap into thanks to the strong magical properties of Puyo (from Arle herself)
That's kinda similar to what I was thinking. Another headcanon is I think Ex from PPT 1 & 2 is a humanoid avatar of the Serephim Orb, which is why he's the keeper of dimensions, and is how multiple new dimensions are still being made with their one connection being the use of Puyos despite Arle not using the Orb again after the Monogatari games.
im so glad that someone is talking about the game in the year of our lord 2022. Swag video and thank you for sharing the shin lore!! if you know where to find the translations i would appreciate it....:evil
I know a bit of Madou lore and though its canonicity (and in general) is kinda up in the air, I do like to think most of it is canon to some degree. But I'm more curious about where you got some of those anime scenes from, I've never seen them before. I was only aware of the Puyo Puyo animations. I do kinda miss the older style of the Madou cast. Nothing against the modern cast, but I just vastly prefer the Compile era.
*This game, specifically the character that this video is about is really obscure, and I can think of many reasons. (Looking at YOU, Sega. No wonder this franchise is dead. Because you feel the need to do nothing with any IP you own that isn’t Sonic.)*
Honestly I don't see why Sega doesn't just buy the Monogatari franchise from Compile Heart at this point instead of trying to erase or forget the old character's lore ever happened. The RPG, as it is right now, is almost completely separated from it's origins (for obvious reasons) and Sega makes more than enough money from the popularity of Puyo Puyo in Japan alone, and don't tell me it doesn't because you don't just make an Esports version of your puzzle game out of the blue just because you feel like it.
Seeing all of this really wishes they would go back to the original formula of the series. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Fever and 7 characters, but I feel like there’s a lot of potential for in depth lore they could tell through possible future RPG games and of course, side Puyo games but they won’t. And I mean lore on both the Madou and Fever side. Klug/Strange Klug/Sig lore or Ms. Accord/Popoi/Raffina lore. It could really go places if they were creative enough. But it’s just a pipe dream unfortunately 😢
