amazing video essay!!! marluxia’s character, especially in light of union cross, is SO fascinating. and naminé is such a stellar character who absolutely deserves this love. plus shoutout to the appreciation for my boy repliku at the end! not entirely sure if it’s relevant, but marluxia’s storyline being tied to envy is also so fascinating when you consider that it was arguably envy that took his sister away from him. ventus wanted friends, he wanted some sort of power, he wanted a place to belong and to matter… he must have been jealous seeing people around him have friends like that. obviously he would’ve never actively chosen to get all this by killing someone and stealing from her, but the darkness that overtook him definitely was feeding on those feelings of desire. he didn’t even know her and yet she had everything he wanted, and the darkness must’ve known that, which is likely why it targeted her. he filled the role strelitzia was supposed to have played in the group and in lauriam’s life. and yet none of this gets resolved and it’s all forgotten… moral of the story is envy ruins lives, right

I did briefly mention Ven to contrast how he overcame his emptiness with new connections unlike Marluxia who used his, but this adds a whole new layer of meaning. In a sense, their journeys echo each other's at different points, both committing actions of envy that stemmed from the void in their lives that they'd eventually regret (though we haven't seen Lauriam's regret yet, I'm sure he will/does feel it). It’s baffling how most don’t realize or even internalize how integral Namine is to the makeup of the series after KH1. It’s to the point where I’m convinced the she’s Nomura’s self-insert character, down to the detail that she’s also a soft spoken artist with incredible power. That aside, great video my dude!

Fair enough, I respect the sound reasoning! Personally, I did enjoy her more quiet understated return after she had done so much between CoM and KH3, I think it really helped Replica Riku shine and helped her realise how important she was regardless of it she could fight or not. After questioning and loathing her powers and existence for so long, seeing everyone welcome her with open arms and being shown how important she was, was very meaningful to me. Obviously, what hits and doesn't is all personal, and I'm excited to replay later games to better understand the rest of the cast, which will undoubtedly give me a new level of appreciation for those you mentioned and beyond.
As much as I appreciate how many KH theory videos there are on TH-cam, I always wanted somebody to make more video essays on the characters and themes at play. This is insane. The way you intertwine the different narratives and character arcs and connect them with KH's themes and story... Commendable work. You made me appreciate CoM much more.
was actually sobbing for 20 minutes straight. this hit haaaaaaard. I am always blown away by how much insight and beauty there is to be found in the dialogue and themes from the "classic" kh titles with the added context of the titles that came after. like either nomura is the master of writing satisfyingly well-incorperated retcons or the master of preplanning his story and either way it's just like too satisfying to handle watching this video made me feel like i felt when i first rewatched the BBS cutscenes after initially learning the big kh3 luxu reveal. when he is in the keyblade graveyard and tells aqua: "you two think you have some grand role to play. As if! You're only here so when i finish you off Terra will succumb to the darkness." highlighting that he sees the bigger picture of MoM's grand plan and thus to him this is not the big grand conflict it is to xehanort and the wayfinder trio but merely a stepping stone. was literally speechless when that line popped up and mass sent out screenshots to all the KH fans i know; did the same multiple times for this video too lol ty for this insight i am eternally grateful i stumbled upon this video in my recommendations my goodness, absolutely immaculate, fantastic work

Aqua and Terra indeed didn't have any grand role to play at that point in time, as Xenahort's plan at that time was using Ventus's pure light heart and Vanitas's pure darkness to forge a X-Blade, not the the later plan to use 13 darkness and 7 light to summon KH. So what Luxu said was indeed correct he was just there to witness Xenahort's possession of Terra.
@@yasq1482 oh yes that is a marvelous observation! very obvious too, now that it’s been pointed out to me. thank you for the correction (: context: the scene itself shows Braig talking *_to_* Aqua and Ventus *_about_* Aqua and Terra, and I had errantly assumed by "you two" he had to have been referring to the two present, Aqua and Ventus. in reality (duh) he was just continuing the whole ongoing Terra/Aqua conversation, and as you said, the two of them indeed did not have any role to play in ongoing plan to summon kingdom hearts. And Braig is indeed 'only' there to make sure Terra falls to darkness because although it's not the 'grand' plan in question, preparing Terra as a young and capable just-incase-vessel is certainly on their collective to-do list. That makes.....infinitely more sense than what i had been imagining to myself lol. wasnt too far off in the grand scheme of things, just had to make a lot of weird adjustments for the details to fit. Still, idk how i missed that That being said while i feel as confident now as one can be that you are exactly correct on the intended reading of the line ( _especially_ at the time of release), i still think the added post-bbs context provides a particular color to the scene in a very satisfying and characteristically Nomura way! which was moreso the point i was trying to get at initially anyway going to lump in some miscellaneous thoughts on the subject. not nearly as relevant to the reply just in the mood gush some more while it is on the brain maybe spoilers for all KH games up to and including Missing Link prerelease material idk Braig was definitely speaking truthfully to his motivations as Braig the henchman, but now it almost feels as if he was simultaneously coldly and candidly laying out his plans as _Luxu_ , too. I think there are a myriad of subtly different options there for precisely what that double meaning would be, which is exactly why it is so cool to me! regardless of which though, there is always the hurdle that this implies that Luxu would have to have somehow been expecting M.X. to fail in this particular attempt to summon kingdom hearts. And As for how exactly Luxu could’ve been privileged to that information is anyone’s guess (I don't believe it is confirmed that Luxu has seen ANY of the book of prophecies beyond the lost page, after all), buuut i don’t think it has to be anything all that complicated, or even directly explained. something even as simple as him suspecting that the rushed and partial procedure MX pursues out of desperation from old age would prove insufficient to fully summon KH; Luxu does have firsthand instruction from MoM as well as direct experience as a master during the og keyblade war, after all. I also think many characters of that tier generally know more than they let on, and there are plenty of world events in the timeline that could signal to an educated enough observer that this is not “the end” so-to-speak. I mean all it would take is Xehanort intentionally or unintentionally revealing his visit from the cloaked figure to one of Luxu’s vessels for him to maaaybe be able to make a decently educated guess that TerraXehanort is necessary for that to happen. For all we know, since Xehanort is a keyblade master who hyperfocused on the keyblade war (and even seemingly knows at least a little about REALLY wonky stuff like unreality), MX himself could have been the one coming to similar conclusions at the time. Maybe more generally though, Luxu’s very role, both thematically and literally in the story, is as an observer on the timeline so i would imagine he would have more hints about the future than _anyone_ in kh who hasn’t read the book of prophecies itself. (also I'm not at all positing the one line as evidence for any of those events or anything like that, just that they would all be simple and clean in-universe explanations a writing team could silently cite to themselves as an excuse when trying to iron out continuity, thematic tie ins, double meaning, etc in the process of planning a story/writing a retcon. I highly doubt anything close to this insignificant will ever be touched on directly in game, though i suppose it has _potential_ to be accidentally "confirmed" in the weird event KHML reveals luxu knew of post bbs events as part of some other unrelated story reveal. It's a shame so many people sleep on CoM, because it does WONDERS for all of the characters in it. ESPECIALLY Namine, who became one of my favourites in the series after that game.

Wow, this is one of the best KH video essays I've ever watched! You elegantly put into words many of less obvious messages and journeys in the series. No pressure of course, but I hope you will keep this up :) The struggle to push away loneliness and emptiness is all too relatable, and attempting to force connections (with either real or fictional people) only drives you lower, hurting both yourself and those around you. These stories offer hope by showing how humility, acceptance, accountability, and forgiveness of others as well as yourself can lead to healing, even though it can take time.

Just a random thought but what if the true reason Namine doesn’t look like Kairi much in the same way with Roxas for Sora and Namine’s appearance could be based on Ava
I always pictured namine and ava to be related somehow. Like not siblings, but have some kind of connection. I could be wrong but namine gives me ava vibes and Vice versa. Ever since ava was introduced to us.

Brilliant essay! Id like to think that if marluxia had retained his memories from KHUX, he would have helped Namine more directly, since she resembles strelitzia personality wise. I cant wait to see what they do with lauriam in the next game, and i hope that we get to see him and namine reconcile in some way.

Im glad i came across this video on tumblr. Like many, i never put a lot of thought into marluxia and his similarities to others. At the of the video, i came out with a greater appreciation for him, namine, and CoM. Definitely rewatching this later Edit: Oh i also love the composition of the thumbnail. Lauriam with strel, ventus, and larxene in the bkg, and namine with sora and riku. Aahh i want to see more of them in the next saga :D

Thank you for giving attention to Namine and Marluxia, two of my favorite characters since I originally played COM on GBA a long time ago. I’m so glad that they will continue to be relevant going forward in the series. I think Namine in particular is a crucial character with many mysteries yet to unravel. I relate to her loneliness and desire for connection a lot, and I think it makes her a really interesting and realistic even if subtle character.

Fantastic analysis! Marluxia was always one of my favourites in the series so it was really fun seeing his motivations put into perspective and really understanding what made him such a great antagonist. Honestly there’s so much happening in kingdom hearts that it’s often difficult to understand the emotionality behind the characters, at least for me. I think it’s because it’s always felt very fairy tale like and because I assume the language barrier/translation misses some nuances, but I appreciate when other fans can make videos like this talking about the clear motivations of characters and how they interact. It’s a lot of lore to keep track of in the first place, and then to keep track of every characters feelings about the events transpiring is just a whole other level. I really appreciate this and I’m looking forward to watching your other videos and seeing what else you create!
I certainly can relate, I know with me personally KH3 didn't really hit despite following the series all my life, nor did the contents beyond; I accepted that maybe the series wasn't exactly for me anymore. It took both a few years away from the series, a new perspective of media in general and of course, re-experincing this series again for these videos that I found a new love for KH, and it's still changing. I did not know she was hated. This is a surprise for me. But I wonder if some part of me was infected by such conception, because in fanfic scenarios, I ALWAYS try to imagine her in a darker stage light. 🤔🤔🤔 Nah ! I bet if she was offered friendship with Roxas and Xion by using her powers to make them real, she'd try to feel less guilty about her mission, since technically, she'd be told she'd be helping people. Marluxia miscalculated. Also, I hate he's being used as a good guy now. I hate how most Nobodies are good guys now just because they got their hearts back (dark empathy exists people, having emotions doesn't automatically mean the person will feel regret). Vexen I can accept. He created Xion and programmed her to be real, not to mention he seems to be the closest to Ienzo (and his Zexion persona seemed mostly neutral, and his manipulations were based on what he believed Riku was, not what he wanted him to be, so I can accept him too). I can also accept Axel. But Larxene, Marluxia... It makes no sense to me.

something even as simple as him suspecting that the rushed and partial procedure MX pursues out of desperation from old age would prove insufficient to fully summon KH; Luxu does have firsthand instruction from MoM as well as direct experience as a master during the og keyblade war, after all. I also think many characters of that tier generally know more than they let on, and there are plenty of world events in the timeline that could signal to an educated enough observer that this is not “the end” so-to-speak. I mean all it would take is Xehanort intentionally or unintentionally revealing his visit from the cloaked figure to one of Luxu’s vessels for him to maaaybe be able to make a decently educated guess that TerraXehanort is necessary for that to happen. For all we know, since Xehanort is a keyblade master who hyperfocused on the keyblade war (and even seemingly knows at least a little about REALLY wonky stuff like unreality), MX himself could have been the one coming to similar conclusions at the time.
Maybe more generally though, Luxu’s very role, both thematically and literally in the story, is as an observer on the timeline so i would imagine he would have more hints about the future than _anyone_ in kh who hasn’t read the book of prophecies itself.
(also I'm not at all positing the one line as evidence for any of those events or anything like that, just that they would all be simple and clean in-universe explanations a writing team could silently cite to themselves as an excuse when trying to iron out continuity, thematic tie ins, double meaning, etc in the process of planning a story/writing a retcon. I highly doubt anything close to this insignificant will ever be touched on directly in game, though i suppose it has _potential_ to be accidentally "confirmed" in the weird event KHML reveals luxu knew of post bbs events as part of some other unrelated story reveal. Guess ya never know. hi anyone who made it all the way to the end sry i talk so much

I always pictured namine and ava to be related somehow. Like not siblings, but have some kind of connection. I could be wrong but namine gives me ava vibes and Vice versa. Ever since ava was introduced to us.

Brilliant essay! Id like to think that if marluxia had retained his memories from KHUX, he would have helped Namine more directly, since she resembles strelitzia personality wise. I cant wait to see what they do with lauriam in the next game, and i hope that we get to see him and namine reconcile in some way.
Thanks! Definitely agree, his personality in UX is quite distinctly different in general too to where I don't think he'd do smth as malicious. I hope they get a good moment together, or it could be a slow burn since it was such a negative experience for Namine. Either way, I hope something happens!

Im glad i came across this video on tumblr. Like many, i never put a lot of thought into marluxia and his similarities to others. At the of the video, i came out with a greater appreciation for him, namine, and CoM. Definitely rewatching this later

I’m so glad that they will continue to be relevant going forward in the series. I think Namine in particular is a crucial character with many mysteries yet to unravel. I relate to her loneliness and desire for connection a lot, and I think it makes her a really interesting and realistic even if subtle character.

Marluxia was always one of my favourites in the series so it was really fun seeing his motivations put into perspective and really understanding what made him such a great antagonist. Honestly there’s so much happening in kingdom hearts that it’s often difficult to understand the emotionality behind the characters, at least for me. I think it’s because it’s always felt very fairy tale like and because I assume the language barrier/translation misses some nuances, but I appreciate when other fans can make videos like this talking about the clear motivations of characters and how they interact. It’s a lot of lore to keep track of in the first place, and then to keep track of every characters feelings about the events transpiring is just a whole other level. I really appreciate this and I’m looking forward to watching your other videos and seeing what else you create!
I certainly can relate, I know with me personally KH3 didn't really hit despite following the series all my life, nor did the contents beyond; I accepted that maybe the series wasn't exactly for me anymore. It took both a few years away from the series, a new perspective of media in general and of course, re-experincing this series again for these videos that I found a new love for KH, and it's still changing.

I bet if she was offered friendship with Roxas and Xion by using her powers to make them real, she'd try to feel less guilty about her mission, since technically, she'd be told she'd be helping people.

Also, I hate he's being used as a good guy now. I hate how most Nobodies are good guys now just because they got their hearts back (dark empathy exists people, having emotions doesn't automatically mean the person will feel regret). Vexen I can accept. He created Xion and programmed her to be real, not to mention he seems to be the closest to Ienzo (and his Zexion persona seemed mostly neutral, and his manipulations were based on what he believed Riku was, not what he wanted him to be, so I can accept him too). I can also accept Axel.
But Larxene, Marluxia... It makes no sense to me.
