The "twist" is right at the heart of the movie. That it appears to be about "signs," as in the visible, crop signs. Whereas the movie is actually about "signs," in the spiritual sense - namely that there are no coincidences, but what appear as such, are signs of the work of Providence. The key to the entire movie is the dialogue on the couch, in the middle of the movie - that "there are two kinds of people." Those who know that, no matter what happens, there is Someone who cares for them (even if they lose their life) - and those who live in despair, for whom any unfortunate event (or death) might mean the end of everything. The Gibson character at the dinner table was an example of the second category.

the aversion to water is why some people didnt like this movie, but I LOVED it. Everything (the signs) was right there under our noses in the beginning from The daughters water "quirk" to the sons Asthma, and Merrils failed Pro baseball career , and the Fathers wifes accident. Everything led to how they were going to defeat the aliens and get the father back on hi spiritual path.
Such a great movie at Shymalans Height of his movie directions
      **spoiler alert**
After Signs.. his movies went downhill. The "VILLIAGE" was after that
then "The lady in the water" - which was .. meh
Then the "Happening" - about the trees.. not a good movie
then The last air bender - which I never saw
I didnt watch anymore of his movies until a few years ago when I heard about the movie "SPLIT" and "Glass"(the sequel to Unbreakable)
I urge you to watch "SPLIT" before "GLASS"

I really like the implications of the message of the movie when held up next to the discussion on the couch.
At first glance, the viewer sees the opinion of the lights in two perspectives, the first of which is naïve when retrospectively thinking of events. The "we're not alone" point of view would be wrong about the aliens being a miracle (good thing). The skeptical stance, however useful societally it may be (with the lights) is ultimately right but misses the mark. But... what happens is that we fight for the people we love and it can save us from destruction. We are looking out for each other. And in that way, the first is actually more correct, Providence or no. We are here, and so even for the skeptical, we are not alone.

This was my favorite of M. Night's films. I think the "twist" was the entire movie... The "signs" we're all of the things we take for granted and assume don't mean anything, but have a greater role and purpose. In the case of this film: Bo and her water, Graham's wife's final words, etc. Ultimately, it's a movie about a man finding his faith again... It just so happens that the backdrop is an alien invasion

I'm late because this is the first I'm seeing of your channel, but i absolutely love watching reactions to this movie. It's my favorite movie of all time, and there is so much little detail and callbacks in the movie. I think this is Shyamalans best work, even though some of his other works are great too. Little details like when the dog gets sick, he says he'll call the doctor and the kid replies "he doesn't treat animals" its because Ray was the vet, but the only thing in the entire movie that mentions him being the vet is the few second shot of his mailbox when graham goes to visit him. great movie, loved your reaction.

  • @texassmokingmonkey
    @texassmokingmonkey 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Nice reaction. I think “signs” refers to the crop circles, and to Graham’s dying wife telling him what to look for, and that moment with the alien in the house confirming the signs his wife gave him, Bo leaving full glasses of water everywhere, Morgan having asthma so his lungs would be closed, and Merrill being a beast with a baseball bat. After getting busted at the Army recruiter’s office for holding the strike-out record, he said, “It just felt wrong not to swing.”
Like every idiosyncrasy and quirk among them was MEANT to be, in preparation for that one moment. Signs. Plus Graham realized all of this, and his faith returned. Excellent movie.👍

The consensus when Unbreakable came out (his second movie) was one of general disappointment, and it wasn’t immediately accepted by most. They wanted “Sixth Sense 2,” instead of a comic-book movie with no giant earth-shattering “twist,” like in Sixth Sense. People have come around, though, and recognize it for what is always was, which is a great movie.

The birthday party scene and the TV reflection jumpscare definitely had people gasping, including my mom who is an expert at overreactions during scary movies. There's actually a video that explains all the clues M. Night Shyamalan included in the movie. It explains that it was actually about demons, not aliens. It's been years since I saw it but I'm pretty sure it was here on youtube. Maybe someone else in the comments knows or you could try searching the meaning of the movie.

The demon thing is disproven, Shamylan clearly calls them aliens in the behind the scenes and the script

One of my favorite movies! A piece of trivia about the movie is that it was filmed in 2001. In fact, the first day of filming was supposed to be 9/11. Production was postponed for a few days, and the first scene that was originally slated? Graham saying goodbye to his wife. They did the scene and it was a heavy, very heartbreaking day, since they were essentially replicating what happened for hundreds of people just a few days prior. It added a sense of realism

I live in a small town in Quebec. Where everyone's backyard is a forest or a cornfield. I remember watching this movie in highschool for Halloween. It was terrifying. I was 13 and walked in the movie room without knowing that alien/demonic space beings/abduction would become my biggest fear. I actually saw a UFO in Montreal back in October 2020. 17 years day for day from when i saw the movie. I was at Sauvé Metro station waiting for the bus, looking over the jewish cemetery. Planes usually fly low around there and i know exactly how planes sound and look. There was this weird Flame, the size of a small house. Burning in the sky. I was unable to speak or breath for a moment. Overwhelmed by something i knew wasn't normal. The fire was going up and down but always going in a straight line. I told the strangers next to me in the bus line. One of them first impression was : Is that a missile?! Then the Ufo disappeared from field of vision before more people could notice it. I hated myself for not recording it. I know it wasn't a plane. It was acting like a drone burning while flying but it didn't seem affected by the fire it emitted. Very trippy stuff.

This movie is stupid, ridiculous, and cannot be taken seriously. If you're a species that is highly allergic to water, WHY WOULD YOU INVADE A PLANET THAT IS 70% WATER?
If extra-terrestrials (not necessarily these aliens) exist and came to our solar system looking for raw materials, they would take one look at Earth and say: "Not worth it! We'll mine the rest of the system first."
Fun Fact: The film was shot on the property of an agricultural school, Delaware Valley College, where two areas of corn were already growing at different stages. The corn grown for the film was naturally further behind the other two areas of corn, so it was not a planned element.
Bonus Fact: The "Brazilian Video" was shot in Miami, but the children were all Brazilians. A Portuguese couple played the parents in this scene, but M. Night Shyamalan decided not to use them because he noticed that their accent was different. Brazilian Portuguese and Portuguese from Portugal are two different languages.

Aliens hating water, invading a planet full of water, where water falls from the skies daily, where clouds of water or fog is almost omnipresent, and its inhabited by beings that are more that 60% water (like people).
Thats similar kind of stupidity like if humans invaded a xenomorph homeworld naked. And yeah, they got absolutely owned. I dont think such aliens would ever come back...
