It was actually Stan Lee that insisted that the lost love story turn out to be made up, because even though he's playing a fictional version of himself, he thought the "I'd give it all up for one moment with her" would be an insult to his actual wife.

re: the "Whoopie" question, there was a popular game show called The Newlywed Game where one spouse would answer questions while the other wasn't there, and they'd see if the answers to the same questions matched. Instead of the word sex, they would use the word Whoopie because broadcast TV.

Mallrats was actually my introduction to the ViewAskewniverse. I had no idea who Kevin Smith was at the time, and the only reason I knew about it was because my friends would quote it constantly. Also, since I was super introverted back then. They would call me Silent Bob 😅 Back when I still lived at home and had cable. Mallrats was on the IFC channel. So I watched it and loved it. It was also cool to finally get all the quotes my friends were saying. After that I saw Clerks and so on and so on. Today, I'd definitely call myself a Kevin Smith fan. I do hope to meet him one day. I'm glad you like Mallrats Kaiielle. Just like you I still have memories of malls way back when. To me going to the mall back then was a big deal. Now, not so much. Willam (the sailboat guy) is the same character that Veronica calls snowball in Clerks. He's just played by Ethan Suplee here. Scott Mosier was supposed to reprise his role. I've heard the story told by Kevin Smith but I've heard him talk so much I can't remember where. It was probably that Ethan auditioned for a different role and decided the cast him as Willam because they liked him so they offered him this role.

Mallrats was made long before Stan Lee cameos became a thing, so seeing him on screen was actually kind of mind-blowing. And seeing as how 1995 was the _very_ beginning of the internet era, it's completely believable that even a superfan like Brodie wouldn't recognize Stan at first.
This was actually among Ben Affleck's first roles, and *was* the first time he played an adult (by age, anyway) on screen. Kevin Smith jokes to this day that he "made" Affleck.

They say "THE mall" after the 90s oversaturation is what truly killed malls. You get cities with multiple malls and suddenly it's hard to compete. Online shopping obviously helps but there are countries where malls still exist and do well, it's the saturation of the US malls that killed them.

Well, Dante is his brother. So the joke is for every movie with that actor, he's playing one of Dante's brothers. I'm a bit late to this because I wanted to watch the FL and didn't have time for a couple of days, so some of what I was going to say has already been said, but there's some stuff that still wasn't mentioned.
In addition to Julie Dwyer being the person whose funeral Dante and Randal attend in Clerks, the character Ethan Suplee is playing, Willem Black, is actually the same character that Dante's girlfriend nicknamed "Snowball" in Clerks. In Clerks, he was played by Kevin Smith's longtime close friend and main producer Scott Mosier (who still acts in this one as Michael Rooker's assistant, who has to hold the vomit bag). I don't remember why Mosier didn't play Willem again (he played several roles in Clerks, but maybe on a studio movie they felt they couldn't do that), but Smith has joked about a Marvel multiverse-style explanation for the two different Willems. Also, Joey Lauren Adams, who plays Gwen, is said to have had sex in costume on a pool table with Rick Derris, a character that appears in Clerks (a dickish arrogant customer who picks up a girl to have sex on the beach with in the convenience store).
The names T.S. and Brodie (and Bruce -- Brodie's full name is Brodie Bruce) are references to the names of Sheriff Brody, T.S. Quint, and Bruce, the animatronic shark, from Jaws. The name LaFours is a reference to a similar authority figure character (with the same straw hat) from the movie Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. The name "Gwen Turner" is a reference to Smith's longtime friend and fellow independent filmmaker Guinevere Turner, a queer woman who would go onto write and appear in Mary Harron's American Psycho, which I would've suggested to you on your form if you hadn't seen it. Finally, the text descriptions of what happens to everyone at the end (in particular, the font) is a reference to Fast Times at Ridgemont High, which again would've gone in your form if you hadn't marked it as watched.
The tone of this one is a little different from Mallrats because Smith intentionally wanted to make something that had the energy of an '80s R-rated teen comedy like Porky's or Animal House (or Fast Times). It'll be interesting to see what you think of the next three movies, which go in all sorts of different directions from here.

This movie was my introduction to Kevin Smith, and the next movie of his I saw was Dogma. To this day Dogma is my favorite Kevin Smith movie.
As for why he doesn't talk, is because he hates his voice on film.
Here's a bit of trivia about the actor who plays TS
His name is Jeremy London. He has an identical twin brother, Jason, who's also an actor. Jason was one of the actors in Dazed and Confused, which I HIGHLY recommend. BTW Dazed and Confused was Matthew McConaughey's first movie.

Theres another view askew movie that came out after Mallrats but before Chaing Amy. It was called "Drawing Flies" It unfortunately had a limited release and no youtubers have reacted to it. It stared Jason Lee as a guy obsesed with Bigfoot. Renee Humphrey who was also in mallrats was in it. As well as Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes playing other characters in it besides Jay and Silent Bob.

Wow it's been years since I've watched this movie and it's aged like milk.
Ethan Suplee is a nice guy, when he was working on "Without a Paddle", he used to go into the Blockbuster where my friends worked and rent DVDs from them all the time (it was the early 00s when Blockbuster still existed). My friend would never charge him so when he was leaving, he came by for the last time and brought him an action figure of his character from "Mallrats" and signed it with "It's a fucking sailboat!"

Michael Rooker was in Oliver Stone’s “JFK” , as many times as I’ve seen both movies I never associated them as the same actor because in “JFK” he was younger, skinner and had hair. Rene Is Shannen Doherty from “Beverly Hills 90210” who I had a crush on back in the day.And Jason Lee as Brodie , I have no idea if he is related to Stan Lee, but I liked Jason in “Almost Famous “

Malls weren't really a thing by the time I was old enough to be hanging around in a place like that. And it really does honestly seem weird that people would just go there and hang out. And shop? In person? Amazon is so much easier! Last century was wild.😝
I can't remember what order the View Askewniverse plays in. I know which one I hope is next, but I've decided not to look it up. I'll just be surprised when your reaction is announced. ✌🤓

I still shop in person sometimes because I've been burned too many times by shopping online and the clothes arrive and don't fit like I thought. It's a hassle to return stuff when you bought it online, so the only clothes I buy online are things like t-shirts and sweaters and underclothes (except bras). Everything else I like to still shop in store. It used to be so fun to just go waste time at the mall and window shop, it was good for exercise, a great way to kill time before social media took over our brains.

Fun fact: Kevin Smith shot basically a completely diff opening and a lot of the movie was diff from the final cut. Not so fun fact: So even though Jason Mewes had played Jay in Clerks, cause Universal did not want Jason to play him in Mallrats so he had to audition against such actors as Seth Green & Breckin Meyer. Fun fact #2: So Joey Lauren Adams who plays Gwen in this movie and at one point dated T.S (Jeremy London) well she also dated his identical twin brother (Jason London) a few years earlier in a movie called Dazed & Confused which I’d love to see you react to someday. It has so many big time actors from nowadays (Who were no names at the time) it’s insane.
