  • This is a reaction to my first time watching Alien, released in 1979 and directed by Ridley Scott. 7 people, 1 cat, and an alien on the loose... what can go wrong? So happy to finally dive into this movie after playing a few hours of Alien: Isolation in the past! A fantastic cast starring the lovely Sigourney Weaver as Ripley and there were so many elements of horror and some pretty tense buildups! Make sure to stick around to the end of this video for my full thoughts and review and thank you so much for watching!

The one thing I noticed while editing, but naturally didn't mention it in my thoughts (because I record that before editing), is the subtle facial expressions, behaviour, and statements by Ash leading up to his reveal. It was so much fun noticing those details while editing this reaction. What a fantastic story and film. What is your favourite moment and/or line? Who is your favourite character? As a side not Scott did not tell the actors about the chest buster scene but then had it re-filmed. So the one really made with the movie is a mix of the two.The one tip off something was wierd about ASH was when he id that 100mph run in place before sitting down at the counsel. This movie keeps you in suspense the entire time. Aliens is a mix of suspense and action.
Well it does follow Star Wars. The actual models were just the prop guys taking models from Star Wars and cut a piece here or there. Add something. Re-paint action. The interior set was real and costed big bucks.
It funny when you think Star wars only just beat out "Smokey and The Bandit" a comedy for Most Popular film of the year, the year before.

I like the smirk after Ash says "I can't lie to you about your chances, but...you have my sympathies."
Also the set for the room where they talk to 'Mother'. Very atmospheric. The creeping dread in that room when Ripley reads 'Crew expendable' and realises the Company couldn't care less about any of them.

It won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects, it made $200 million dollars against an $11 million dollar budget, it put Sigourney Weaver on the map, it spawned 3 Sequels, 2 spinoff films, 2 crossover films, video games, comics, novels, toys, board games, novelizations and an upcoming live action TV series based on the movie, it's now considered to be one of the scariest motion pictures ever made.

What really makes me feel so old watching this film is there are only THREE members of the cast still alive today. Veronica Cartwright (Lambert) is 73, Sigourney Weaver (Ripley) will be 73 next month, and Tom Skerritt (Dallas) is hanging in there at 89. Everyone else has passed on. It's just not possible this film is over 4 decades old. It does not compute. Insufficient data.

I saw it in the theaters. The chest bursting scene caught everyone off guard. It was a wild reaction in the theaters. Before that we were all soaking in the scenery. Marveling at the ship and the initial encounter with the relics ship and the egg and face hugger. HR Giger did a marvelous job bring the alien to life.

I went with my parents and sister. I was 13 at the time. It is the only movie that I saw as a kid that scared the shit out of me. Afterwards of course when the lights came on and we shuffled out it was quickly forgotten. It did however inspire me that night to hide in my sister's bedroom closet and jump out at her. As she always teased me it was very satisfying hearing the blood curdling scream she let out. 😁

All the cast did a fantastic job, but Ripley was easily my favorite character, not just because she's the main character, but because Weaver made her so compelling and convincing. But just a great movie in all aspects. The crew discovering the mummified giant alien pilot (known as the "space jockey") was iconic for me. So creepy yet fascinating at the same time.

Great reaction to an absolute classic! Most people don't notice the alien hiding in the shuttle - even the ones, expecting it to have boarded the shuttle. A lot of the set dressing in both the Nostromeo and the Narcissus, delberately mimic the look of the alien (tubing, black, shiny etc). Most of the effects still hold up really well, except the alien baby scooting across the table and the transition from dummy Ash, to Ian Holm. This is one of those films that definitely stands up to repeated viewings, with some great, subtle character interactions throughout.

I was 18 years old when this came out, and a single Airman in the Air Force. I went to see it with a couple friends. I had NO IDEA what it was about. We sat in the 3rd row, so everything was big, and right in front of us. After the Alien started killing people, I leaned over to one of my buddies, and laughed, and said, "Can we leave now?" This movie scared me like no other. It was awesome.

This movie still holds up very well even today, 43+ years later. It must be said that Jerry Goldsmith's ominous and foreboding music is a perfect companion to the film, filling the viewer with dread right from the very beginning. And of course the attention to detail throughout is just amazing. It feels like a real ship and a real planet. So well done. The sequel is considered one of the greatest sequels of all time, though it is a different kind of movie. Whereas this one is an atmospheric slow burn, the second one is more of a straight up action sci-fi flick but done so well. In my opinion, none of the other sequels beyond the second one are wroth watching. You will only be disappointed (because the first two set the bar so incredibly high).

I saw both Star Wars and Alien in the theater and instantly became a certified sci-fi fanatic. SW was breathtakingly amazing and Aliens was a nightmare in space. The dark theater put us knee-deep in the horror and I'm sure claustrophobic folks really didn't enjoy the surroundings. I loved it. Especially the nightmares at 15.

This is one of those movies you wish you can watch for the first time over and over again. It is a haunted house in space.
I hope you watch the extended version or the sequel, Aliens. It has some scenes in it that really enhance the story and had to be cut for the runtime in the cinemas, and they might answer some Isolation questions. (I haven't played the game.)
    Some answers to your questions:
They say in tge movie they are at Zeta Reticuli system, which is about 39 lightyears away.
    It is set in 2122.
The sequel is the only movie everyone likes. Not many people liked the movies that followed after Aliens.
My favourite moment is the chestburster scene. And my favourite character is Ripley, because of the sequel. You'll find out why. 😁

The film came out when I was five. I was about eight or nine when they showed it on TV and stayed up late to watch it without permission. It changed everything I thought a horror or sci-fi film could be for me. And people were blown away by it, although I do remember that some critics did not like it (one said that the worst thing about the monster was that it drooled too much).

The first two are definitely worth watching, setting a standard for almost all science fiction that came after. The third movie had lots of issues during writing, pre-production and filming, resulting in an unsatisfying film with a mediocre plot and disappointing special effects. The fourth was good, but not on the level of the first two, and the plot relies on events from the third. My usual recommendation is to see the first two. If you choose to see Alien 3, then watch Resurrection as well. But my advice is only the first two.

I grew up in an agrarian town north of Dallas. Star Wars blew my doors off, of course. The entire town was buzzing about ALIEN because Fox had done a test screening there, and everyone who'd attended said, "you must come see this!" Some said they even liked it better than Star Wars. So having no idea what kind of movie this was, for my twelfth birthday my parents dropped me off at the theater, with a friend. We were expecting a rousing space adventure.
I don't think the children of the Internet can quite fathom how insular and ignorant we were, growing up in an agrarian town in the late seventies. The Internet didn't exist for us, though I had a set of printed encyclopedias. My TRS-80 was a sensation. We had three networks and a religious channel on an antenna-fed television with grainy images and distortion. The VCR was just showing up to start moving us away from "appointment TV." Movie reviewing was two guys named Siskel and Ebert on once a week.
From the opening score, I immediately knew what sort of movie we'd inadvertently committed to: a grown-up, honest to goodness horror movie, of the kind whose unexpected TV advertisements were the bane of my childhood, like Magic or Suspiria. It was like diving into icy water. But neither of us were willing to back out in front of the other, or spend two hours cringing and bored in a theater lobby.
Today Hans Giger's surrealistic style is a cliche, but this was his debut. No one had ever seen anything like it. The corridors and the skeleton were so utterly outlandish, so foreign, that we could scarcely grasp what we were looking at. And it was so obviously menacing! It was like the astronauts were crawling through the corpse of a diseased whale.
I knew what would happen to Kane the second he started convulsing. My brain put the pieces together, and my body went rigid, frozen in panic. The good news is I've never again frozen like that, and once literally dodged an oncoming pickup, so I'd honestly say horror movies saved my life. But ALIEN was the first.
After the famous scene, the rest of the movie felt a bit anti-climactic, a monster in a scary place. Ash saved it, giving us something utterly uncanny and unexpected, though even back then I would have preferred a bit of foreshadowing that androids existed in this world. By the time Ripley discovered the creature on the shuttle, I felt numb, pushed beyond my capacity to feel fear. And when 'Salem's Lot aired on TV only a few months later, I watched it with joy rather than fear.
Then that damned, silver, spidery thing started showing up in my nightmares.
By the time ALIENS came out, I was graduating high school, and what a wonderful catharsis seeing the monster that haunted me gunned down. Perversely enough, the computer game felt like a reunion with an old friend, who'd become a playmate I could finally spend time with and learn about.

"Normal" for horror movies is to kill of the supporting cast and keep the "big name" cast last. Here they killed off the most recognized cast members first. Weaver was an unknown, no one expected her survive.
You noticed they were just "workers" that's also why they smoke. They are just blue collar workers not "doing their jobs", they were called on to perform duties WAY outside their area.
Definitely watch Aliens (the second) it is one sequel that lives up to the original.

If you do take up Alien Isolation again, the map allows you to change floors and that might help with getting around. The tracker has a bar on top that directs you to where your objective is. Everyone is going to tell you to watch Aliens, but I will be the one who also tells you to watch Alien³. In particular, watch the Workprint version, which was introduced on the special edition DVD in 2004 and has been included on all releases since (you can even digitally rent this version on all major services, where it is called the Special Edition). It's a tough movie, and an inherently compromised movie -- the director, David Fincher, turned in this cut after constant studio interference during production, and decided to quit instead of completing the extensive changes they asked for. But (without giving anything away), it features a great lead performance, the best of the series IMO, and is just a really interesting chapter in the series.

I also have no use for 2001, but I love this film. The year this takes place is 2122. It is a future where nearly everything is owned and operated by 'The Company', aka Weyland-Yutani. The real core message behind this universe is about unchecked economic power, not all that different from Ridley Scott's imagined future in Blade Runner. Ellen Ripley is absolutely my favorite. I'll just say at the end of this one she's well on her way to being the single bravest character I've ever seen in a film.

Ripley and Sarah Connor (Terminator franchise) were BADASS female leads but also maintained their femininity. They weren't women "acting like men", etc. That's the difference in films then versus today.

Still holds to this day. The only thing I never got over with since 1979 is the ending scene when the engines are fired up and burning the alien. You can clearly see that the engine exhaust was made just with water falling down on a glass surface and bright white lights.

I would suggest that the reason you found the slow pacing of 2001 boring and that of Alien interesting is that 2001 uses it to build the setting while Alien is building the characters. The result is that with Alien you feel like you know and care about the characters when the action starts, but with 2001 you don't.
A lot of this can be explained by the direction. Stanley Kubick was a brilliant director, but he wasn't known for emotional characters. Kubrick focused on the cinematography and the big ideas; Ridley Scott knew the Alien script was simple and that the meat of the story lay with the character interactions.

The sequel, Aliens, is quite good. Notable for changing up the genre of the original and for being the first big movie James Cameron got after "coming out of nowhere" with Terminator.
You can skip everything after that, it's a pretty fast decline from there.

@@NZBigfoot I would say 3 is the best of what comes after, but that movie had PROBLEMS. It's amazing anything came out of it at all really.
Here's a thing I learned: in a movies credits, when they get to the screenwriters part, "&" between 2 names means the names worked together on a rewrite, "and" between 2 names means they were separate rewrites of the script.
This movie has (not kidding) SIX screenwriters and only 1 "&". That's five full rewrites. They lost their cinematographer of choice 2 weeks in. The level to which this production was "cursed" is almost legendary.
      I'm an Alien fan, so I enjoyed 3 as a low-tech alt-take of 2, but for non-fans it's a bit of a mess.

The water dripping down on Brett was condensation from the ship's cooling stacks. It's probably not completely clean, but it wasn't toxic. The Nostromo was only the part the crew took down to the surface of the planet. The rest of the "ship" in space was a massive ore refinery. Think of it like a truck hauling a huge trailer.

During development, the studio offered many ideas for the plot but all of them were rejected...except one: making Ash an android. That was a big surprise in the theater. A plot idea that was briefly discussed but ultimately rejected was that at the end of the movie Ripley gets killed by the alien on the escape ship, the alien climbs into the captain's chair and then makes a distress call - in Captain Dallas' voice! That would have been wild, eh?

I think this, "The shining" and "The Thing" are great examples of slow movies done well, but I've also found "2001: A Space Odyssey" to be way too slow. I strongly suggest watching "Aliens" (the second movie in the series). One of the best sequels ever made...but I would personally avoid the rest of the franchise. They alternate between bland and "jumptheshark-y" (imho).

If you're gonna watch the sequel be sure to watch the Director's Cut, or Special Edition, as the Theatrical version cuts out the entire subplot about Ripley's daughter. Since you've already played Isolation, I figure that's not a spoiler detail.

Seeing this in the theater in 1979 was a trip. Nobody knew in advance what the alien looked like or things about it. The lobby prop had the egg with green lighting and we were left guessing until the movie showed us. This was all very new and very well done. Not the sterile white ships of 2001, not the inviting aesthetics of Star Trek, this was a grimy, small, working vessel. I read that they actually reduced the size of the sets as the filming was proceeding so as to make it more claustrophobic. As for the rain, did you know that the old blimp hangars from the 1930 had their own indoor weather and clouds could form because they were so high? So I figured that this ship was also very tall and rain formed in it, hence the dripping.
Yes, the Ash fight was the most intense scene and so well done. My favorite part too. Note that for a crew of 7, the escape pod could only hold 3. That is why they didn't leave after Dallas was killed by "jazz hands". Heartless corporation at work.
Ripley's daughter is mentioned in Aliens. I highly recommend that sequel. I never saw the rest, and have read that they were not so good. So I would be okay if you stopped at two.

  • @Imylover
    @Imylover ปีที่แล้ว +2

You should absolutely not only go back to Alien Isolation but you should replay it from the start. Then you will realize the very close & direct connection it has to this very film. Isolation is not just based of this film, it is a direct sequel & also canon. You play as Amanda Ripley, as you might recall, & that is this Ripley's daughter! Isolation takes place roughly 15 years after Alien. The whole reason why Amanda is even in the story of Alien Isolation is that she gets a tip of where the flight recorder of the Nastromo might be & she is looking for her mother, to either actually find her or at least learn of what happened, & she ends up in the same nightmare herself. The design, the architecture, everything you see in the game is a copy & paste of this film. You even start, & end, the game on a ship that is of the exact same design as the Nastromo, just with some different colors. But the actual Sevastopol Station the vast majority of the game takes place looks exactly like the Nastromo. A while in you also get a back story where you visit the derelict spaceship of this first film & very similar events happens. And Isolation also have androids, yes, one highly advanced & then the working Joe's. And the alien itself, 100% right. Looks the same, behaves the same, sounds the same. I think you will not only get a huge eye-opener if you get back to Isolation & take it from the start but I think you will enjoy the game so much more now that you have seen the actual film it literary is a sequel to! Now the story of Isolation will make so much more sense to you. It will not just be a scary sci-fi game, now the story will have much deeper meaning. And so will the atmosphere.
