    I got my 2DS at 2015 but thanks to one of those "Stability updates" I had to wait one whole year to get an exploit to it. But man, what a time to be alive! It's my favorite Nintendo console since then, and still rocks nowadays. The modding community is awesome, I believe even more bigger than the Wii one, and keeps the console alive no matter that "daddy N" had changed priorities to the Switch.
    8:19 Nintendo officially only have SNES games on New 3DS/New 2DS hardware if you use Homebrew to install any official SNES game on Old 2DS hardware they run awful, but look how smooth the SNES emulator runs on 2DS homebrew. So once again modders community does what Nintendon't

    The GBA injector works flawlessly as there is actual GBA hardware inside the 3DS so everything will work fine.
    There only was a problem with pokemon games as persisting the save requires a restart to the home menu where their savetype wasn't supported until hackers implemented it.

      @Gabi-enby 5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Uh, you think so?
      The NDS had two CPUs: the NDS mode CPU, and the GBA mode one. I don't think 3DS has three CPUs just for GBA compatibility (given they only launched some titles just for Ambassadors).
      We could say it's well coded software: but it would be ridiculous for the 3DS to have 3 CPUs, just for some uses.

    • @rileymartin8284
      @rileymartin8284 5 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      @@Gabi-enby It's at least related to the fact that the 3DS family can play DS games. I've experienced the Ambassador GBA titles before, and unlike other VC titles on the system, there are no extra features & the system does a mini reboot upon leaving the game. This means that the system is at least booting into DS mode to run the GBA games & it's likely that Big N could never find a workaround that met their standards, which is probably why they never publicly released GBA games on the system.

    • @ryan.crosby
      @ryan.crosby 5 ปีที่แล้ว +69

      The NDS had two CPUs, an ARM7 (GBA compatible) and an ARM9. However the DS actually used both of these to run DS games. The ARM9 was the main application CPU, and the ARM7 was used for audio processing and input/output. ARM7 was obviously used for GBA mode too, but at half speed.
      Now, the 3DS is a little weird. It has three cores on board, an ARM11 (3DS games), an ARM9 (3DS kernel or NDS games), and an ARM7 (NDS games or GBA).
      Because the 3DS normally runs its kernel on ARM9, it cannot run NDS games with any sort of 3DS kernel running, so it boots into a dedicated NDS mode where only ARM9 and ARM7 are enabled. This is why it's almost impossible to "break out" of NDS mode into 3DS mode via exploit.
      GBA mode on 3DS is running on ARM7 with ARM9 and ARM11 disabled. However, it uses a weird "ambassador" firmware, which was needed to load the game from memory and handle savegames. This mode disables so much of the 3DS hardware that sleep mode and all other 3Ds features don't work at all, because it's literally acting as a GBA.
      Nintendo never released this on the eShop because it probably never met their quality standards. You had to reboot the system to get back to the firmware, sleep didn't work. They never implemented all the save game types (pokemon). But it is a real GBA CPU.

Also, the original Wii model had GameCube compatibility, later versions didn't. On the topic of GameCube, Nintendo removed the rarely used digital AV out. The NES toploader removed the AV out, was composite only.

    Huh? Nintendo removed functionality and features from hardware all the time before the Wii Mini. Heck, the standard Wii had already lost GameCube support. DSi lost the GBA slot. GB micro lost GB(C) support. GBA SP lost the headphone jack. DOL-101 GameCube lost digital out and other I/O. GBA lost the IR port. NUS-101 N64s lost the 64DD port. SNS-101 SNES lost S-Video, RGB, built-in RF, expansion port, and the eject lever. Most SNS-001 SNES systems lost the cartridge locking mechanism from earlier SNS-001 consoles. NES-101 NES lost the composite AV output. HVC-101 Family Computers lost the microphone and built-in RF.
    Nintendo has a long history of cutting things back and reducing functionality to save cost.

    2DS/3DS are some of my preferred methods of running classic emulation. Even on PC's with all the filters and options I think the screen stretch can be rough sometimes. The low-res handheld screens are great for emulating retro games and hardware is typically more than powerful enough especially if you have a "new" 3ds/2ds

  • @rebmcr

      @0x1EGEN 5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      No, they are still emulated. The 3DS and 2DS do not contain the legacy ARM processor like the Nintendo DS did. Some games do have issues, such as Super Mario Advanced 4.

    • @Supersayainpikmin
      @Supersayainpikmin 5 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Jason Lee The GBA's main processor hardware is baked into the DS CPU core, and since the the DS CPU is still on board the 2DS, games run perfectly fine. As far as the 2DS is concerned, it's a DS game running at a lower resolution, as both don't offer a sleep mode. I guess Mario Advance 4 has minor issues considering the DS and 3DS cores are on the same chip. (Just a guess though)

    • @0x1EGEN
      @0x1EGEN 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@Supersayainpikmin That is still incorrect. Again, the Nintendo DS has 2 separate processors, the ARM7 which is what is used for the backwards compatible GBA games, and the ARM9, which is what the DS games used. And although they were probably on a single chip, that does not mean it is the same for the 3DS/2DS as the chip on those only contain the ARM9 architecture. The ARM7 processor is entirely absent on the 3DS/2DS. Although further research before this comment, I too was a bit wrong on my end. GBA isn't entirely emulated because the ARM11 is similar to the ARM7 architecture which does allow some instructions to run natively. However, again the ARM11 is still different ant therefor some parts does need to be wrapped or emulated. Because of this, not every GBA game is compatible and it is also why Nintendo only released a few GBA games in the E-Shop.

    • @Supersayainpikmin
      @Supersayainpikmin 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      As someone else in the comments has pointed out, the 3DS does have the ARM7 processor. While the DS had it's own dedicated ARM9 processor, many developers used the GBA CPU for sound processing as the DS, like the GBA, lacked any kind of sound hardware. Since almost every DS game uses the ARM7, it was vital to be included for DS backwards compatibility. When a DS game is launched, the ARM11 is completely unused; this is why when exiting a game does a full restart of the system and why it's impossible to go from DS mode to 3DS mode. When in GBA mode, the ARM9 is unused, however the ARM11 is still technically used, but only for save games. Because of this awkward save method, not all save types are supported, including the ones used in all the Pokemon games.

    • @0x1EGEN
      @0x1EGEN 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@Supersayainpikmin ..you're using another comment as a source. And that info is still wrong. The DS does indeed have a dedicated sound chip, one that can play 16 channels. The DS utilizes the ARM7 mainly to drive the secondary display, usually for 2D graphics. This is the same on the 3DS with the ARM9.

    Makes me nostalgic for the days when I ran homebrew on my ds lite. I didn't have an ipod, the iphone was only this hip new fad and yet this one device was my planner, my ipod, my gaming console and even had a cool artwork app called Colours which was AWESOME for the time. I didn't even need a smart phone back then. Oh and Nitro tracker is still one of the most usable trackers I've ever used. Had some Really cool synth apps too. Since a hacked 3ds can load mods for games, I thought I'd give a few recommendations (aside from the obvious ones like English translations of Japanese-only games, of course):
    -Same-Sex Marriage patches for both Fire Emblem Awakening and Fates - adds in the option for gay/lesbian couples and also has new (text-only) dialogue for these character pairings. Though one should note that getting the child characters requires some fiddling around with tools.
    -CTGP-7 for Mario Kart 7 - a community-made modpack for MK7 that adds new features and most notably whole new tracks. You can race in online mode with this mod as well, provided you're in a -Mario Kart 'community' where everyone has this mod loaded.
    -Certain games like Dragon Quest 8 have mods to add in alternative soundtracks, unused/cut content, undo censorship, etc.
    -And my personal favorite - Project Restoration, which is a mod for Majora's Mask 3D that not only tweaks the game with QoL features (such as transformation masks being on the d-pad, the I and II touch buttons now being physically press-able via button combinations,etc.) but also restores aspects of the game to be more like the original N64 version (Zora-swimming no longer takes magic and is now fast by default, the Inverted Song of Time has the same slow-down rate it had in the original game, and one of my favorite aspects - it removes the random eyeballs that were added onto every boss enemy for no reason. With this mod the 3DS version now has pretty much no downsides!

    3DS homebrew is amazing. not only does it have tons of potential, but the installation process using fredtool is insanely easy. i remember doing Tubehax in like 2014 (or something) and it was way more difficult- it was something that took like 5 hours to do for a first timer. but the first time i used fredtool it took like 2.5 hours, even though i was totally new to the whole process. i regularly install homebrew on my friends’ 3DSes for free these days because i want to spread the joy of this awesome little console.
    an underrated function of 3DS homebrew is custom themes. Nintendo’s selection of home menu themes tend to be pretty boring, but people have made some really interesting and awesome themes using Anemone.

There are so many great titles on the 3DS.. some that are so great that I played them via emulation just so I wouldn't miss out on them. Citra has come a long way and was a great way to play Metroid Samus Returns. However there are many other titles which you really can't replicate the handheld experience with via emulation. Nintendo sells official manufacturer refurbished New 3DS XL units on Ebay for $120 with a 1 year warranty, and I've been seriously contemplating going down that route...

    Also, never EVER use a video guide, unless that video guide is specifically for the exact version your 3DS is on, and is only walking you through the de facto official guide: 3ds.hacks.guide . The various forums and subreddits constantly get "My 3DS was bricked" posts that say they followed a video guide or tried to skip a step in the process.

      Two things you should know that weren't covered unfortunately.
      The NSUI tool he mentioned should also be used for GB, GBC, NES, SNES and GameGear games. 3DS has this 'Virtual Console' feature which allows these games to run natively rather than via emulation.
      Also check out TWiLightMenu++. Useful if you wanna play DS ROMs off the microSD as opposed to an external cartridge.

      The whole reason I'm avoiding homebrew is because I'll probably brick my 3DS. Though it's tempting to mod the console because of being able to move pokemon from physical games into my newer games.

    Own two 3ds's and bought one for my gf a year ago. Homebrew is amazing and such a game-changer. Having all my favorite 3DS, DS, GB, GBC, GBA, and SNES games available at the press of a button is fantastic and I am still playing it nearly every day. Plus, the 3ds is just so much more portable and smaller than the Switch tbh

    late to the party but!
    from what i've learned, if you decide you want to softmod a 2ds or 3ds system, i would NOT suggest using a flash cart, especially not an r4 card. if my memory serves me correctly, a lot of these flash carts(mostly notably being r4 cards) contain time bombs, which will ruin the cart once the bomb's timer is up. this is to make it so people will buy flash carts every time their current cart breaks. just use sd card hacks. as well, if you don't have a way to physically connect your sd card to a computer, you can also go into your system settings and wirelessly connect your sd card to a computer that way. it works completely fine this way.

    Of the Nintendo systems I’ve installed homebrew on, I’d say the 3DS is probably my favorite. I’ve actually installed it on 3 systems in the 3DS family, and helped someone with a fourth. Something good to check out is the TwiLight menu. It was made for DSi homebrew but there’s a 3DS version as well, and it’s a really good way to take advantage of DS mode. I use it for a lot of rom hacks on old DS games. Another problem I’ve run into is my main computer doesn’t have an SD card slot. I decided to use a secondary computer to install the CFW, then install FTPD after that, so I can connect to my 3DS and transfer files from my main computer wirelessly. The transfer is slow sometimes but it works pretty well!

    though I absolutely adore the 3ds, it's really small and uncomfortable for my hands, the 2ds is such an upgrade for me when it comes to the ergonomics and it became my main portable console as I really don't care enough to buy a switch right now (I mainly play pokémon and I don't like the switch ones), maybe I'll get a new 3dsxl one day for the improved hardware and being able to play virtual console snes games instead of the emulators, but I'm in no hurry

      The 3ds also runs NDS Games natively too. Twilight just uses bootstrap to tell the 3ds to locate and boot up NDS Games. Nes VC injections run natively as well. 3ds is better suited for running retro games than a PSP or Vita. The retro gaming emulators on a PSP are ok but not as good as a GBA and NES VC using the 3ds hardware to run it natively. Plus the Sega Genesis and Snes emulators are better and run🤷 games flawlessly. I had both a hacked Psvita and Psp 3000 and I can tell the difference in the emulators big time. But I honestly miss my Psvita it was a beast too. A whole entire library of PSP, PS1 and Psvita games at your disposal. I had English patched Psvita games 👌. Fucking Adrenaline, some reason gave me problems. Psp is the easiest thing to hack , hacked my psp with my android smart phone and a otg cable lol 😁 Another thing I love on the 3ds XL is the R2 and L2 shoulder buttons which a PSP and PSVITA does not have which makes mapping fighting games so much more easier. Metal Gear solid snake eater on 3dsxl, even though the Psvita graphics are superior. You can freaking sneak crouch walk, control the camera angles better and use touch on screen icons to initiate Snakes commands for a easier and better experience. I like how the 3dsxl integrated the on screen touch buttons a lot better than Sony 🤷
