  • Cubic Ninja was the most important Nintendo 3DS game ever created thanks to its QR Code entry point into the world of unsigned code and homebrew on the 3DS. It's where it all began, and in todays episode we take a closer look.

Basically, the regular browser couldn't run flash or any of that sort of plugin, but the TH-cam app did so it could play videos, and someone found that you could exit the site within the app through one of the links that show up at the bottom of some yt pages. You'd then use that to exploit the system and run code. They quickly patched it tho

People don't understand how important it is to get ONCE into the system. Once you are in, you can search the house for other more easy vulnerabilities.
If you aren't inside, its hard to find those. I think these first hacks are the most important step in all devices to permanently build an access point.
On a personal note, I think companies should open up their hardware once end of life is archived. For example the WiiU is no longer profited from by Nintendo, there is literally no point in them not pushing a final firmware, that just opens the system with a "dev mode" that allows external software to be installed.
The dream would be this would be mandatory, but its just a pipedream. Until then we need the hacking community to continue their important work.

Crashmo is a great example of why QR level sharing is better, if it was server based or physical wireless based then we wouldn't have all those Crashmo levels we have today. Back then people would be posting levels on websites, forums and such and all you needed to do was scan it.

To think, one little crappy puzzle game could cause such a big fuss which snowballed into the current 3DS hacking scene we've got today.
Of course, Cubic Ninja wasn't the only game on the system to have an exploit, but it was one of the much easier to use and more noticable ones.
Although at the time I didn't have any form of Wi-fi and so I wasn't aware of anything related to homebrew or hacking in general. But even then I didn't own Cubic Ninja when it came out, I'm not even sure if I ever heard about it.
The game I got when I first got a 3DS was Sonic Generations because that was the only game that looked interesting when I first got my console.
Of course nowadays I have a hacked 3DS of my own mainly because of all the cool homebrew apps, tools and games to play. And also being able to get now discontinued games is a nice plus, mostly because there are games that got discontinued way before the eShop shutdown that I really wanted as a kid.

I remember following his Twitter closely when he announced the name of the exploit game would be released shortly. One day after the Tweet I found a copy of the game for 29 euro, on a local website whose main business wasn't even games.

I heard about the game when it came out. It's cool to think a minor feature in a game could get past all the security.

MVG, this video reminded me of the PS2 exploit with Agent Under Fire. Can you make a video about that? I still can't believe how someone finds that out and comes up with a way into the system through the game.

You should do a video about how YOU would do hardware/software security for a console, if you were hired to. I love these videos talking about how things were broken, but it would be cool to see what would or could be done to either make it impossible, or at least last long enough for the lifecycle of a console.

Not quite, just a bit harder, with a magnet and ntr modified R4 card

    • @zsotroav
      @zsotroav ปีที่แล้ว +6

An R4 card is a physical item that costs money. Compared to the previous no external anything needed methods, it's quite a bit harder and more expensive. It's important to note however that exploiting is still pretty easy if you have one of the many vulnerable games (some of which free) from before the eShop closure.

A bit related is the Vita 3.60 firmware version thing back in 2017 or when was it right before H-Encore showed up.
Any Vita on firmware up to 3.60 was easily 3~6 times the price of a newer firmware version. I happened to get interested in the Vita again right around that time, and managed to find a cheap 3.67 firmware version one extra cheap, right before people figured out those were also hackable now.

Huh, that's interesting. In the clip you show from Smealum, he's using the Japanese version of Cubic Ninja. And on the screen for QR code entry, there's a third option which in Japanese reads "StreetPass". That third menu option is missing from your (presumably USA) copy of Cubic Ninja. So the game had StreetPass support in Japan, but not the US? That's super weird.

I remember those days like it was yesterday. When the game name was announced, I was VERY skeptical; I had this feeling like it was going to tempt me to buy the game at an inflated cost only to find out it didn’t work or was already patched. By the time I was convinced, it was too late haha! Price was crazy. I ended up waiting for another hack and don’t regret it, but I would have been nice to be on the front lines :)
