As futuristic as the Star Fox series is, I always preferred how the voice clips sounded when compressed. Just feels right for communications over a transceiver.
Yeah, it didn't seem right to have the voices be uncompressed. Don't get me wrong, it's cool, but it kinda breaks the idea they're speaking over a comms system. I'm sure someone could apply an audio filter and use that instead.
There was such a unique charm in growing up alongside the Gameboy / DS handhelds. Glad to see the 3DS has such a cool modding community active in keeping it alive!
The 3DS was Nintendo's last true portable device and is still my favorite. One the best 3DS mods out there is the Project Restoration mod for Majora's Mask 3D which undoes all the unnecessary changes made to the game with additional QOL changes. Also there's a mod that adds C-stick support to Ocarina of Time 3D which never got Circle Pad Pro support. Now you can freely move the camera around like in Majora's Mask 3D.
Project Restoration is fantastic, and up until they start doing crazy stuff with the MM native port I think it's the definitive way of playing the game.
12:32 There's also the "video player for 3DS" that supports a lot more common video formats/codecs and multiple subtitle/audio tracks. If you're not into proprietary 3D movies, this option might be your jam.
I use that! works fantastic on my N3ds but havent managed to get it working on an old 3ds. If your memory card is big enough you can put a ton of movies on it all you really need to do is get it down to the right resolution (thanks handbrake!)
This was always one of the biggest selling points of homebrew, for me. It's especially nice for games where you only have two or three save files, but you make some game-changing choices at certain points in the game that are nice to be able to backup while playing on original hardware.
I think JKSV is far better than Checkpoint. JKSV is more simple and intuitive, I hate how everything on checkpoint is done by button combos that are not explained well. I was infuriated how some games didnt appear because the game list is refreshed by a button combination, on JKSV you just click "Reload game list" as it should. For Pokemon games there is also PKSV which acts like a local Pokemon Bank
I rather JKSV than Checkpoint. I hate how Checkpoint has an awful UI that relies too much on button combos for important features that the user needs to remember. JKSV is far easier and straightforward to use, just refresh your game list, choose it to create a new backup or to restore a save from that game and done. For Pokemon games there is PKSV also.
Took my 2DS XL with me when I travelled this weekend. I played on it whenever I had the chance. Seeing that New 3DS face plate...I kinda regret not getting them when they were just official RRP - now it's just the 2nd hand market at wildly inflated prices.
Love my N3DS XL and even enjoy the form factor of the 2DS XL but…. forever regret not buying the New 3DS bundle with the Pokémon Red/Blue special edition faceplates… kills me every time I see pictures of it
You're honestly better off just buying 3rd party faceplates for the normal sized New 3DS, depending on what plate it is anyway A lot of them are also inflated now, but I'd rather pay roughly $35-40 for a 3rd party clone of the Pokémon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire faceplates then spend $120+ for the actual OEM ones. The 3rd party clone does the job perfectly fine.
I lost the New 3DS I bought on Thanksgiving at Best Buy back in 2016 at some point while on a trip the next Summer. Hopefully someone out there has it and is enjoying it...
Understandable I have a XL model that looks like a SNES. While I am still baffled that you could never swap the front plates on these models luckily mine is already in the style that I want it to be.
We need to think in terms of development costs vs financial gain ratios. The devs who ported those games to the 3DS did so on their free time, but if Nintendo were to do it themselves they'd have to spend money on devs who'd need to be paid for this, as small as this kind of project may seem. I don't think many people would be interested in those games like they'd be in NES/SNES/Game Boy stuff. But it is pretty sad to see that those games will essentially become unknown to the majority of people due to the fact they're tied to a system that failed.
Yeah, but probably the only one that would've been worth working on was VB Wario Land. That would've taken way more effort than just porting the existing Wario Land titles, and didn't think there were enough of us from the 90's who really wanted to play the game but just couldn't stand the Virtual Boy form factor. That thing made me feel like I needed a neck brace after 15 minutes trying it at a demo kiosk in '95 lol
As someone who can speak Japanese (now), my 3DS lately has been one the best emulation machines out there. I'm still thinking of buying a Retroid Pocket 4 Pro but honestly, playing games like Mizzurna Falls, Yuuyami Doori Tankentai (one of my goals) and as of this week, Boku no Natsuyasumi, my N3DS running these games as a CIA has been such a great experience. Even more recently with the new Virtual Boy emulator that os now running natively on the 3DS is insanely good! I recently conpleted Wario Land on it and its by far the best game on VB and one of the best Wario Land games. Using the actual 3DS 3D slider and being able to change the colours from Red to anything else is such a huge inprovement. PS1 on the 3DS and now playing these region/language locked games has made the 3DS one of the best and cheapest handheld emulators out there. Funny side story, while I was in Japan Nov 2023, I ended up street passing with a Nintendo employee, but it said my most recent game was PS1 Virtual Console lol. So now there's a Nintendo employee with someone who had a PS1 emulator on their 3DS now appear in their Mii Plaza.
The 3DS can be ok for emulating some old stuff, but the Retroid Pocket 4 and specially the Odin 2 are much better as general emulation devices, but it really depends on what you want to play.
I modded my old 3ds about two weeks ago. So this video came at the right time for mee, too xD Sooner or later i gonna mod my new 3ds, but at the start i was a bit afraid to do it right away because there are tons of paid Software on it 😅
The number one reason is """piracy""", and I'm not saying this in a bad way. With Nintendo closing their eShop (even though they could have still kept games purchasable via the website, if maintaining the 3DS app up to current security standards was too much of a hassle), modding the 3DS and """"""pirating"""""" games is pretty much the only way to play the 3DS library. Sure you can buy physical games, but the developer/publisher won't see a single cent out of a second-hand purchase, so there's really no moral reason to do so other than personal interest in collecting physical games.
Modded a slightly broken 3DS (top screen brightness is set to max) so that I could make physical backups of games I am planning on modding my main 3DS once Pokemon Bank is no longer around (I am happy that Bank is still sticking around after 3DS online is closed down, I am just annoyed that GameFreak decided to turn Pokemon transfers from an in-built feature into a paid service with a limited lifespan)
PKSM is much better than the official Pokémon Bank, being able to transfer mons from one generation to the other should never be a paid service indeed, soon or later it will become impossible to officially transfer Pokémon from the 3DS and bellow to the newer games.
I've got a couple CFW N3DSXLs that I use for recording, but I'd like to thank you for showing all these great uses! That said, a key one I think you missed would be Checkpoint. The ability to back up saves of physical and digital NDS and 3DS titles directly to your SD card is extremely valuable. Not only is your save protected from any sort of hardware issue, you can transfer that save to another cartridge, console or even to an emulator on PC.
I'm gonna guess and say that the frame drops in a Link Between worlds is due to the game loading things in view on the fly while IN the game world, as opposed to the fast travels fade to black allowing the system to free up bandwith by not needing to render anything, thus not stressing the 3DS as much So the slowdown probably isn't an artistic choice so much as it is a "good enough" sorta situation
I found this video looking for GBA VC injection since the rhythm-based combat makes emulating Mother 3 harder, so bonus points for you having footage of the game in this video!
It's short for the codename of the NDS, Nitro. Blame Nintendo, but on all NDS hardware, you can see the codename NTR written on the back. Similarly, all 3DS has CTR written on the back, as the 3DS codename is Citra (and yes, that's where the emulator got its name from)
@@darxoonwasser But Nitro is. There are existing offical Nintendo DS Hardware, called "IS Nitro Video". "IS" stands for "Intelligent Systems" (they made the hardware for Nintendo and they also makes Games like Wario Ware or Advance Wars) Nitro (the codename for the Nintendo DS) and "video" just means video output to a TV. I own one of this and also made a small video about it. In short: it's a Console with Game Cube Cables to use on a TV.
Hey Jon! Just watched your video on modding the 3DS, and I have to say, you really hit on everything I love about modding mine. The level of detail you went into is something I truly appreciate-especially after the journey I've been through with my 3DS. My 3DS has been through the wringer-starting with a minor scratch on the glass cover that led to a series of unfortunate repairs. I ended up sourcing all the repair parts myself and, after 3 years of frustration and countless setbacks, it's finally in a playable state again. It's been a draining experience, but I'm thrilled to be able to enjoy my games once more. The last repair was done by someone who was miles above any of the previous attempts, and I'm super grateful for his work. However, there's still one lingering issue-the 3D effect. The 3D component seems slightly misaligned, leading to some ghosting. I've tried using the calibration tool in the OG 3DS firmware, but no setting seems to bring back that perfect 3D effect. I was wondering, since you mentioned so many different homebrew apps in your video, do you know if there's one that can help with further calibrating the 3D effect beyond what the stock calibrator offers? The repairman is in another province, and I really don't want to go through the hassle of shipping the 3DS again for something that seems like it should be a simple fix. Thanks again for all the awesome content you put out-I vibe so well with everything you do on the channel. Keep up the great work!
One of these days Jon's just gonna come out with a video titled "how to break out of jail" and I'll nod along, immersed in the explanation and not questioning anything
BootNTR + Snickerstream works only on New 3DS and 2DS LL because of their better hardware. Only runs one screen (your choice) at 30fps and the other at far less. NEWER better way though to wirelessly stream that works on ALL 3DS models is to use Artic Base + Citra. Currently only works with 3DS games, but streams at an almost constant 60fps. Has upscaler options that can look quite nice if you want to use them. Seems to be compatible with 95% or so of 3DS games. Is still in development to get more things working (hopefully DS and DSi games in the future). Since everything runs natively on the 3DS, you do not need to dump games and all saves stay on the 3DS. Meaning once you disconnect the stream (turn off Artic Base) and you then just start the game on your 3DS, you can continue where you left off, since the game is on the 3DS as well as the Saves no matter if you're playing it on the handheld or the PC. Of course, Citra supports controllers, allowing for easy play on the PC as well and you can slap your overlays or OBS on it for making it look nice and streaming.
When it came to the official 3DS support, the biggest missed opportunities were definitely: - lack of Virtual Boy Virtual Console - lack of proper GBA Virtual Console - no Super Mario 64 3D - no Wario platformer - only one (and kinda weak) Final Fantasy game
its kinda crazy watching videos about modding 3ds' from you guys when i remember old ass interviews of you guys sitting with bill trinen about smash lol
You asked what else there is, I am writing a music making app for the 3ds 😊 Mentioning this in comments usually gets it automatically deleted by TH-cam unfortunately. Maybe I am lucky this time. Thanks for the great video, I learned many new things!
@@LloydTheZephyrian Thanks for asking! It's slow due to lack of spare time, added a sequencer clip matrix and tracker editing recently. The effects are still experimental. It is possible to perform long DJ sets with the current state nevertheless. 3DS homebrew is truly a wonderful thing. I put off doing it for a long time, but I finally ended up doing it last week. The fact that it only takes an SD card and ~30 minutes of setup is sublime.
This might be the definitive 3DS homebrew list. :O I have my 3DS homebrewed for a decade now, and was active in the homebrew scene. I didnt even know these existed! Thanks Jon!🥰🥰
My personal favorite is the music mod for Majora's Mask 3D by JoeFilms. It's an incredible mod that updates all of the music in the game with fanmade orchestral versions and if you install it with a digital version of the game, it can simultaneously work with a physical cartridge.
I really appreciate all the nods to playing with the 3D bar on. I really love the 3D effect and the Virtua Boy and homebrew games might be enough to finally get me to homebrew.
I’ve only just recently modded a 3DS after buying a new one because I missed it and I sold my old one. I’ve seen a lot of 3DS modding videos and this one is BY FAR the best explained and most concise videos on this topic. Thank you for your work! 👏
The 3DS is essentially a comfort food handheld for me. So many great games to play, plenty of features to enjoy, and adding Homebrew just makes the experience even better! Mods, native GBA, even better DS enhancements and way to play them from the SD card, oh my this is great stuff! All I know is that the 3DS Homebrew scene is here to stay!
The input redirection has changed everything for me. I also have a 3DS with a capture card, and this goes perfectly with that. Had a homebrew'd 3DS since it was possible and didn't even know this was a thing. Based Jon
OMG someone that actually includes LINKS!?? It's a miracle! Seriously though, I hate watching a video or a stream and they have information without any links.
These are some great tips I didn't know about! I've really only ever used the Rosalina menu to force old 3DS games to use the full New 3DS CPU which makes games like Pokemon show the battles without any frame drops.
One of these days I'll get the Chao Sender stable enough, then you can link your 3DS to a Wii and move chao back and forth DX, SA2 and the other GBA games. If only agb_firm didn't store savefiles with insane encryption.
There are some interesting things I haven't heard of yet. Thanks, Jon! Especially the button remapper as my 3DSXL's A button has no proper contact with the PCB anymore, making it really difficult to play games like Mario Kart. Also that Universal Updater is something I only know from the Switch homebrew scene. Interesting to see it in action on 3DS. Makes collecting homebrew much more relaxing.
Funny thing about DQVIII is that the Japanese PS2 version had midi OST while the English localization had orchestrated OST, in the 3DS it is the opposite.
@@juliannocartagena2007 My speculation is that by PS2 time English localizers thought a better sounding OST would sell better, as DQ wasn't that popular there yet, then by the time the game was ported to 3DS, the composer was already an annoying prick that don't let people overseas use the orchestra score OST.
@@Mari_Izu To be fair, we got the WAY better midi soundtrack. I dont even get why he called it "horrible" the western midi is fine, it sounds ok in the video aswell, the original japanese tho...it was used for the old android version of the game aswell and i can assure you, that shit was pain to listen to.
Checkpoint and the ability to create multiple save files. I kid you not that was the entire reason I cfwed my 3DS and it's brilliant to have multiple saves in a game like Pokémon.
I have GTA 3 on my New 2DS XL, which is absolutely cool and runs better than I actually thought. And one big big recommendationis making own themes via pc.And to install it on your 3DS/2DS, get "Themely". It's like Anemone (getting some custom themes from others) but when it comes to install YOUR themes, Themely works better
Wanna know how to make your 3ds display more colors? First open "Rosalina menu". Go to "screen filters". Then go to "Advanced Configuration". Here you will want to change "Gamma" to 2.00 and "Contrast" to 1.20. After that exit back to "Rosalina menu" and then go to "Save settings". And you're done.
Thank you, mate. I never knew that I could unlock the New 3DS's clock speed, and I certainly didn't know about save states being a thing on an actual 3DS.
buying a new 2DS XL for $100 in like 2018 was one of the best choices I made. barely even touched it until jon started making all of these homebrew videos. now it's my main retro system and there's a surprising amount of great 3DS games. The only regret I have is not being able to try out any 3D
@@desamsterAs someone with an O3DSXL I really want to use the 3D more but definitely suffer a bit from it lacking the n3DS 3D capabilities. One of my biggest regrets about not being able to get one at the time.
@@EuroMIX2 It was always wild to me that 3DS released without it. It single handedly saves 3D on 3ds. Like on one hand I get it, the success of the 3DS let us have the New 3DS, but I always had the feeling that we never got to experience 3D focused games on the 3DS because of that ironically. Most games use the 3D aesthetically rather than making it core to gameplay, and the awful flickering and one angle nature of the original 3ds 3D is likely responsible for that. Tbh I wish we got a New 3DS with NO SLIDER always on 3D on release so developers would've be forced to actually engage with it to do cool things. And if a game didn't have 3D, it could've just boot into 2D instead.

Great informative vid Jon! just at 12:50 I Was really hoping you were going to show us how you copied the 3d enhance code and where to put it. Did you copy the code and make a text file and if you did what do you need to name the file, the game id? Any info is appreciated and keep up the great videos.
Used SnickerStream years ago; streamed Fire Emblem Fates with it no problem (minus a few random disconnects). However as Jon said there are some quality issues. My biggest gripe was only one screens runs at "full speed", the other has FPS skips so the video looks choppy. Thankfully you can set the "primary" screen and just set that as the main screen in your stream for best viewing, leaving the other screen for menus and whatnot.
This feels like the 3DS' unofficial swan song. Not under the form of a game, but of all the absolutely incredible things you can do with it once modded. I love mine so much for this, even more than the PS Vita (which also has an insane modding scene). I'd love to thank the entire 3DS community for all the fantastic mods.
Glad to see some appreciation for the 3d effect here, i actually love the 3d, dont really understand all the hate, i couldn't imagine using a 2ds just because the 3d is so important to me
14:57 note: it can only be played at 60 FPS on New 3DS systems, in Old 3DS systems the framerates will be hovering all around the place, will never go below 30 though
working on it myself rn and uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. yeah I dont know why it wont work and there isn't any video guides i can fine
5:57 Ironically, Rayman 3D is one of those games that can crash with unlocked n3DS clock speed. I played through the whole game like that and it always crashed at one point, unless I locked the clock speed. That specific point was the boss fight in "Beneath the Sanctuary of Rock and Lava", everything else works perfectly fine and buttery smooth.
Shout-out to EX Troopers. It's a spinoff of the Lost Planet franchise, and it uses a lot of assets from the cancelled MegaMan Legends 3 prototype. It never released outside of Japan, but a fan-translation was finished in 2022. Definitely give it a try!
In the pile of sludge that’s been this comment it was nice you at least tried to compliment the video. Oh, you still didn’t like that comment? What? I was nice!
I homebrewed my 3DS a couple of weeks ago for my birthday because I noticed the console was starting to have some trouble reading the cartridges when I switched them. So I homebrewed it to dump all my games inside (and my sibling’s because I played them too and I want to keep playing them when I have the time) and preserve my games and my save files. I ended up having fun finding custom themes and I’m learning about what else I can do aside from playing roms and games I didn’t have the opportunity to play before.
Im so glad Jon is no longer at Nintendo Life, so we could get videos like these. There's no way in hell they would ever let him make videos of this topic over there.

If your memory card is big enough you can put a ton of movies on it
all you really need to do is get it down to the right resolution (thanks handbrake!)

I’m a big fan of moving saves between real hardware and emulators, so something basic like Checkpoint which comes with the homebrew is amazing!!
This was always one of the biggest selling points of homebrew, for me. It's especially nice for games where you only have two or three save files, but you make some game-changing choices at certain points in the game that are nice to be able to backup while playing on original hardware.
Checkpoint can also be used to have effectively multiple save slots in Pokemon games!
I’ve seen heaps of ‘3DS must have modded features’ videos and yours is by far the most useful. Almost everything you mentioned hasn’t been said in other videos. Super useful and show awesome features that are actually very useful!
Gotta say, you nailed your intro jingle. I start watching sometimes just for that instant hit of good vibes.
Rhythm Thief Mention, my day is made
Seeing that New 3DS face plate...I kinda regret not getting them when they were just official RRP - now it's just the 2nd hand market at wildly inflated prices.
I deeply regret not being able to buy one when they were a reasonable price, but for me it's for the extra system power and buttons.
Love my N3DS XL and even enjoy the form factor of the 2DS XL but…. forever regret not buying the New 3DS bundle with the Pokémon Red/Blue special edition faceplates… kills me every time I see pictures of it
You're honestly better off just buying 3rd party faceplates for the normal sized New 3DS, depending on what plate it is anyway
A lot of them are also inflated now, but I'd rather pay roughly $35-40 for a 3rd party clone of the Pokémon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire faceplates then spend $120+ for the actual OEM ones.
Nintendo couldve sold Virtual Boy games. The financial opportunity was RIGHT THERE. They really missed out
most people wouldn't give a shit if that happened.
@@lol-ih1tl Nintendo would've still earned money from it
We need to think in terms of development costs vs financial gain ratios.
I can definitely say that VB Wario Land looks amazing on a modded New 3DS
@@1993StrangeBoy Oh 100% for sure. But at the moment, playing all these games like this is really nice. I'm planning on buying a RP4P later on

Just modded my 3DS yesterday, this is gonna come in handy.
Same, did mine a few days ago. I rock a purple new 2ds xl
Welcome to the Homebrew life.
I modded my old 3ds about two weeks ago. So this video came at the right time for mee, too xD
Sooner or later i gonna mod my new 3ds, but at the start i was a bit afraid to do it right away because there are tons of paid Software on it 😅
The number one reason is """piracy""", and I'm not saying this in a bad way.
Modded a slightly broken 3DS (top screen brightness is set to max) so that I could make physical backups of games
I am planning on modding my main 3DS once Pokemon Bank is no longer around (I am happy that Bank is still sticking around after 3DS online is closed down, I am just annoyed that GameFreak decided to turn Pokemon transfers from an in-built feature into a paid service with a limited lifespan)
PKSM is much better than the official Pokémon Bank, being able to transfer mons from one generation to the other should never be a paid service indeed, soon or later it will become impossible to officially transfer Pokémon from the 3DS and bellow to the newer games.
@@1993StrangeBoypokemon bank is no longer a paid service. also, you cannot transfer to switch games using pksm.
I'm gonna guess and say that the frame drops in a Link Between worlds is due to the game loading things in view on the fly while IN the game world, as opposed to the fast travels fade to black allowing the system to free up bandwith by not needing to render anything, thus not stressing the 3DS as much
So the slowdown probably isn't an artistic choice so much as it is a "good enough" sorta situation
Absolutely loving these cfw videos. Thanks Jon.
I found this video looking for GBA VC injection since the rhythm-based combat makes emulating Mother 3 harder, so bonus points for you having footage of the game in this video!
I really appreciate that you went way deeper and way more into it than others, where they stop at "mod it and try homebrew yourself!".
Awesome 👍
NTR is a very unfortunate acronym to keep repeating throughout the video lmao
It's short for the codename of the NDS, Nitro. Blame Nintendo, but on all NDS hardware, you can see the codename NTR written on the back.
Similarly, all 3DS has CTR written on the back, as the 3DS codename is Citra (and yes, that's where the emulator got its name from)
@@CiromBreeze I don't think either Nitro or Citra are confirmed code names. They make sense but I'm pretty sure that only NTR and CTR are official
Looked in the comments for this after he said it lol
@@darxoonwasser But Nitro is. There are existing offical Nintendo DS Hardware, called "IS Nitro Video". "IS" stands for "Intelligent Systems" (they made the hardware for Nintendo and they also makes Games like Wario Ware or Advance Wars) Nitro (the codename for the Nintendo DS) and "video" just means video output to a TV.
I own one of this and also made a small video about it. In short: it's a Console with Game Cube Cables to use on a TV.
@@UndeadCollector oh interesting, I didn't know that, thanks!
This is your first video of yours I've seen but I love your little into animation it's so good
BootNTR + Snickerstream works only on New 3DS and 2DS LL because of their better hardware.
That DQ8 mod is a godsend omg, thank you for making me aware of that, and all the other cool stuff you can do!
Dual analog kid icarud sounds awsome! I've actually been looking for something like that, I just need to pick up a new 3ds lmao
When it came to the official 3DS support, the biggest missed opportunities were definitely:
- lack of Virtual Boy Virtual Console
- lack of proper GBA Virtual Console
- no Super Mario 64 3D
- no Wario platformer
- only one (and kinda weak) Final Fantasy game

Funny thing about DQVIII is that the Japanese PS2 version had midi OST while the English localization had orchestrated OST, in the 3DS it is the opposite.
That is kinda weird. Why’d they do that?
@@juliannocartagena2007 My speculation is that by PS2 time English localizers thought a better sounding OST would sell better, as DQ wasn't that popular there yet, then by the time the game was ported to 3DS, the composer was already an annoying prick that don't let people overseas use the orchestra score OST.

"Hey everyone, John here!" All I need to listen to complement my day. Good vibes all around.
