  • Modders have been building Wii Portables for years. But now, for the first time ever, talented members of the community have created a kit to make building a portable more accessible than ever. This is the story of the Gboy kit.
    UPDATE:
Unfortunately, the BitBuilt Store has shut down, and the Gboy kit has been discontinued. But all is not lost!
Gman, Aurelio and I started a new storefront called "4 Layer Tech" where we sell improved versions of all the boards you need to make your own Wii portable! 4layertech.com/

    -----Recommended Tools------
    -IRONS-
    Hakko 888D - amzn.to/3aDdSZa
The most popular and recommended iron in the community. Used to be the iron I used til I upgraded to the much more expensive Hakko 951. Tips are inexpensive and there are a huge variety
    TS-80 - amzn.to/2Y5Japi
Supposedly a great iron, recommended by several of my friends, but I've personally never used it. USB C powered. Recommend purchasing a chisel tip as well.
    -Rotary Tool-
    Tool - amzn.to/2VCt3ha
For cutting the board. I have the harbor freight one, but this looks to be the exact same one but re-branded. Has served me great for years. Please wear safety glasses.
    Cutoff Wheels - amzn.to/355nM4G
A cheaper dremel (rotary tool) is perfect, but I highly recommend getting nicer cutoff wheels. I've purchased a ton of different cutoff wheels, and these ez lock ones have always performed the best for me
    -Multimeters-
    Neoteck - amzn.to/2Y5X3DU
Entry level meter. Auto ranging. Should do the job
    Fluke 117 - amzn.to/2VVLRHb
My personal multimeter, if you want something fancier.
    -Hand Tools-
    Screwdrivers
    Basic - amzn.to/2S81ESa
    Complete kit - amzn.to/2Y4ohdZ
I love my ifixit kit to death. I have like 4 of them. They can open anything. But the simple 3 pack should do the trick.
    Flush cutters - amzn.to/355kv5u
    Had these since 2014
    Wire strippers - amzn.to/2KuHw8u
Magical tool. Never going back to manual wire strippers
    Helping hand
Cheap (will do the job) - amzn.to/3cGrFQe
    Durable (will last) - amzn.to/2VF3QTr
Holds things. Useful if you only have 2 arms
    Tweezers:
Cheap (will do the job) - amzn.to/2KAoihW
    Durable (will last) - amzn.to/3cYwhRQ
Tiny fingers. Like using cheat codes. Don't abuse your tweezers. They aren't pry tools.
    -Supplies-
    22 awg stranded wire - amzn.to/3cSGMq5
Use this for power. Perfect thickness for power in portables. Multiple colors lets you color coat voltage lines. Stranded keeps it from breaking inside the insulation and driving you crazy
    34 awg magnet wire - amzn.to/3bEILOl
Use this for all your data lines. The enamel coating protects it from shorting. Make sure to tin it properly.
    Solder (Kester 63/37)
    Spool (recommended) - amzn.to/3bEJ2AR
Tube (not very much) - amzn.to/2S8XAkq
The good stuff. Leaded solder makes everything easier, and your joints better. Not any more dangerous than lead free solder, just don't eat it. 63/37 is the ideal ratio. Thinner is better
    Flux - amzn.to/2Y2N7uM
Kester 951. Great flux. Soldering without flux is like washing dishes without soap. It just makes everything work soooooo much easier.
    Solder braid - amzn.to/2KALEEa
For fixing small oopsies. Solder braid is like an eraser. Good eraser erases. Bad eraser just schemers stuff all over your work. Good solder braid is worth it.
    Solder Sucker - amzn.to/3axp21K
For fixing big oopsies. You don't need a nice one, cheapest one you can find will do. This is the one I found.

I've been on the outside of the modding community since I was a child and used to read up on Ben hecks guides for modding I gutted my first gc and bought components to make my first gc portable . I failed as I wasn't very knowledgeable and I didn't have the proper skillset yet, but I always looked up to you guys the pillars of the community. To this day I have not made a gc portable yet but I've never given up on wanting to make one and now I feel like absolutely can, thank you shank and literally everyone who poured their time and effort into helping the community become better modders, everything that you guys have done still amazes me to this day. This has inspired me I will be buying this kit and digging out my old components and making myself a wii portable. Ty again 💛

Making a portable requires a decent amount of part finding (although the most experienced builders will likely have them already), as well as many hours of work.
However, asking someone to re-make a project they have already made, without any changes is a surefire way to commission a portable for yourself.

I’ve been slowly dipping my toes into modding for a little while now. So far I’ve done a few RGB output mods and put a backlit screen in a GBA. I’ve wanted to try portablizing since your wiivision video, this kit is fist thing that has really made me feel like I can do it. I have a kit on order and am planning to make it my project for this summer.

I bought a mini-console kit when I was 10 and I broke it trying to build it, so I've been nervous to try out new electrical stuff. With this, I might be interested in trying it again. Great video!
