Richard Barbieri's keyboard sounds are so otherworldly and so important to atmospherics and mood of Porcupine Tree's music. I honestly have no idea how his sounds are constructed, but its a lovely, textural part he adds.
20 years of PT enjoyment for me. Colin is the most laid-back Bass genius I have ever had the pleasure of watching-Richard Barbieri dove-tails his genius with Stevens. No one is a better percussionist than Gavin (hard-working as one wrote below); what a talent. Steven is self taught on his guitar; and though he says he does read music, he produces the most satisfying composed surprises in sonic pleasure I have ever heard.
You said it perfectly - somehow the genius of Richard fits perfectly with the genius of Steven and I think they create this unique PT sound. I have to idea why people always try to compare PT with Pink Floyd or Anatema.. Porcupine tree has it's unique sound and feeling
Colin Edwin is such an underrated bass player. I just listened to a live version of the same song by Steven Wilson's band with Nick Beggs on bass. His lines were clunky, while Edwin's lines are effortlessly played and silky smooth.
If I remember correctly I discovered Porcupine Tree with this song, it was early 2000's. And I was living in London 😊 It hit me hard straight away 'cause I could relate so much to the lyrics. For several years I couldn't listen to it such was the pain I'd feel. It's so beautiful and haunting.
Speechless every time I hear this, the chorus just reduces me to a gibbering wreck!! My wife has commented on how I listen to most of my music with my eyes shut especially when listening to Porcupine tree, she's also commented on the tears squeezing out of the corners of my eyes when I hear this track....
+Kram Sniggah It's a bit of a let down when wives don't have the same taste in music. I asked my wife to listen and she did. After a while she just shrugged and walked away.
5micky2 I know just what you mean! I'm a hi-fi geek as well and trying to get her opinion on a piece of equipment is nigh on impossible! She seems to be stuck in an 80's time-warp where music in concerned where my musical tastes are very eclectic and wide ranging. She kind of understands that PT are something way beyond what many bands aspire to but when i ask her what she thinks she is ambivalent...
I love Guthrie and Dave...but I really miss Steven being the lead guitarist. Always so tasteful, melodic and soulful...particularly during this period.
...don´t struggle...you are still able to leave comments;-)....yes...wonderful meaningful song....you have sent it before...and my answer is still the same...i don´t hate you....;-))...instead i like you a lot....ooops....peace....and friendship forever....Ö.Ö
Fama rica Hello, cool comment. Ya know, not always does a vid share depict my feelings, sometimes I just like & share a song and think whatever :-) This time I just started a vid and wondered if you could see my msg.
Yeah he’s not gonna melt your face of with faster riffs and solos but he’s insanely tasteful. Every note matters. Case in point in this song. I love his playing.
This song is so far the only song in the world to which i can, completely relate my childhood. Thanks you so much Porcupine tree for this epic song and Thanks Steven for being that Child. :)
I'm going through hard things, and I can't describe how much I appreciate this song. I know few greater things in life than the art that is Porcupine Tree and Steven Wilsons music.
Tom B And I agree! :) That awesome moment when all you need to write is "Virgil", or "Vinnie" or "Weckl". Titans, all of them! :) And the same goes for "Gavin".
i so so so agree to this. I saw Steven a year or so ago in LA for "The Hand Cannot Erase Tour" Holy Cow, i was never more disappointed. Steven did mention on his news letter that if you were going to see him that it was nothing like PT. I am sure that Nynet is cool in her own deal but I was hoping for something. My son is also a prog drummer and we are a Gavin Harrison home.
@@pattichapinschneidermaluze3247 agree man. PT sounded like they did because of Steven's talent with music n sounds and Gavin's genius on drums n cymbals and ever so smooth rhythmic patterns. Never heard a drummer even close to Gavin's level.
It's hard to put into words of the ignorant American people (I am) that the sound that comes from this band is absolutely marvelous and there will be no quality to overcome this absolutely beautiful sound!
The sense of finality evoked as Steven comes in with his first solo in just mind blowing, how simple but timed and executed to perfection.cant praise him enough.
ive been a huge opeth fan since 5 years and always listened to a little bit of porcupine tree/steven wilson but today i dont know why but i decided to go on a porcupine tree marathon and discover their other songs. STEVEN IS A GENIUS i love their work!
I still hold Porcupine Tree to be a better band. Gavin is a beast of a drummer, and Steven is one of the best song writers I have heard in a while. I always felt like Opeth tries to too hard to be whatever it's trying to be. PT's music always feels so organic and natural, whereas Opeth has always felt too artificial it its composition. I also don't like the singers voice, but that's just me. Windowpane is their only song that I'm willing to listen to repeatedly
I love Steven's solo work, "don't hate me" because I still prefer PPT and the magic these 4 guys create is ungodly......sure do miss them, I almost grieve for them
thanx mrs. and and mr. wilson for you phantastic made job.....you gave mankind a gift never seen. Your son is genius and makes my life better, love his music, can`t describe!!
Barbieri isnt your usual rock keyboardist or a virtuoso like Jordan Rudess, but he brings a massive atmosphere in these songs, creates tasty licks and fills and comes up with the most beautiful melodies.
I've been there fan ever since I heard them- radio active toy I started with and while working in my armed assignments it gives me forever belonging and soothing feels.
Wait a few years. We should not judge our generation through the prism of the achievements of young popstars. There are many talented musicians, they only need time gain popularity. It is simply harder to stand out for them, they are not products of the big publishing houses.
I wonder what made Steven to write this song because I can't imagine a single person who can hate him :))) amazing. And when he says "can I call you on the telephone" - it kills me. fuckin sad song. But we know about beauty of melancholy and sadness, don't we.
This live version is the best! Im not even missing the flute which is on the original song! Great job and please write one last album for 2017 or closer if possible!
IntermediateJesus I am white so I have smooth hair. You don't actually NEED products, though I do recommend soap for your body + deodorant. My hair is very strong and healthy, it comes from nutrients and diet, not some foam.

AudioholicsLIVE Awesome to know that someone is optimistic. :) I, on the other hand, am not sure about the comeback. Wilson is pretty determined to continue experimenting on his own... Don't get me wrong, I respect immensely his work, but I believe 90% of his fan base is still around today because of PT.
+Ixwhyzed I'm part of the 10% that met and follows his music as a solo artist, and who agrees with Steven himself when he says his newer work is better (I have yet to hear a better song than Routine). I think he can only get better, actually, but PT does have amazing music too. I just don't think they're necessary for SW to continue showing the world what he's got.
The Puertorican Beast Jonathan Ayala Steven Wilson has a lot of feeling in his guitar playing what most modern guitarists lack. PT and Steven Wilson for life!
Hehe yeah, their live performances are really something. Now there are two studio versions. One from the Stupid Dream Album and the other from the latest Steven Wilson solo project album called 4 1/2. Technically it's an EP, but it has Ninet Tayeb singing the chorus. Both at pretty good too.
ahuhehihause1 but did the original PT version have a flute??? I think it was always a flutey synth. Of course in 4 1/2 they had a real flute, but otherwise I think it was always a Synth? :-D

i come here every morning
Richard Barbieri's keyboard sounds are so otherworldly and so important to atmospherics and mood of Porcupine Tree's music. I honestly have no idea how his sounds are constructed, but its a lovely, textural part he adds.
Daniel Verberne p
Each band member is otherworldly in their mastery the instrument and vocal parts.
Richard's keyboards were always a major part of the other-worldly sound of 'Japan' aswell
Yeah.. indeed.. very layered.. the best of layered textures and cross solos I find within the arpeggios and Gavin Harisson.
I was literally just thinking that and here you are saying it 7 years ago...
Oh, Colin... that slinky bass work is pure bliss. And Gavin... there are no words. Masterful all around.
Colin edwin one of the best bassists i have ever heard he exactly when to step in and when stay quiet. A good bassist always know when to do what.
I don't know why they fired him.
@g32.recitales he was never fired, Steven didn't want to make music with pt for 13 years and Colin moved on with his career with other people
I wish I could live inside this song
Mayra Carla de Andrade can't agree more
me too
No, you don't.

Steven is one of my favorite guitarists ever. His talent for melody and composition shines through in every note!
Don't hate me, I'm not special like you. I'm tired and I'm so alone... Damn, Steven Wilson nailed it, exactly what I wish I could tell some people.
Bass line is transcending through multiple dimensions
Colin Edwin is such an underrated bass player. I just listened to a live version of the same song by Steven Wilson's band with Nick Beggs on bass. His lines were clunky, while Edwin's lines are effortlessly played and silky smooth.
This song it's absolutely a work of art.
this is not a song...this is art
Rodrigo Guzmán Le Roy god bless these guys!! Unreal
I agree with you ... very great!!!
Why can't it be both?
great Rodrigo that it's true
Rodrigo Guzmán Le Roy music is a art.
Porcupine Tree doesn't just make music, they make soundscapes.

If only words could describe the marvel of Steven and his mates'
Steven Wilson= Pure Genius
the best guiter solo ever. the whole musical combination is great
Steven is a very, very underrated guitar player. He himself plays it down, but he’s definitely one of the best in prog rock.
Yeah he’s not gonna melt your face of with faster riffs and solos but he’s insanely tasteful. Every note matters. Case in point in this song. I love his playing.
Two of my favourite solos of all time are those from Stars Die and Stranger by the Minute.
Rediscovering the purest gem. This live version takes it to new heights!
Voyage34,Sky Moves Sideways and Up the Downsair and Stupid dream. I Rest my case.
Porcupine Tree is just a trip into the world of emotions
This song is so far the only song in the world to which i can, completely relate my childhood.
Thanks you so much Porcupine tree for this epic song and Thanks Steven for being that Child. :)
I had the chance to hear this song performed live in duo with Ninet Tayeb 2 days ago during his Montreal concert. It was amazing :-p
+Stephane Faucher You lucky guy. I missed the tour in Germany. When I heard this song with Ninet on the 4 1/2 I was absolutely flashed.
Reiner Jablonowski Ninet really charmed the audience in Montreal. I almost cried hearing her singing Routine !
Reiner Jablonowski I hope you'll have the chance to see him live in 2016 ;-)
+Stephane Faucher Wait, there was a Montreal concert that I missed? :(
Nyzackon He was at St-Denis theatre on March 2nd
I'm going through hard things, and I can't describe how much I appreciate this song. I know few greater things in life than the art that is Porcupine Tree and Steven Wilsons music.
This version is so much better. Just love it!
I listen to this masterpiece nightly. No matter the trauma of the day this calms me. This puts me in a place i wish i could stay forever.
I can't stop listening to this song live... So perfect
That bass chill groove in the middle hit me just right.
One of my favorite albums of all times. Great song
He literally makes guitar cry .. absolute genious
Not enough people talk about Steven's guitar playing. A complete guitarist, such incredible phrasing and tone

GAVIN IS THE HARDEST WORKING DRUMMER, PERIOD!
One of the hardest yes !! Don't forget Virgil. (Donati.)

The bass in this song slaps so hard.
When great musicians makes good music ! Beautifull piece ! Friendly to Porcupine Tree members !
Sensation fix.Franco Falsini the finest finger.Italy prog rock from the 70's.Thank you Steven.I love people love good music.
I can't believe they are so underrated! Steven Wilson is amazing and Gavin Harrison...
such a relaxation feeling, Procupine Tree are so amazing Live.
It's hard to put into words of the ignorant American people (I am) that the sound that comes from this band is absolutely marvelous and there will be no quality to overcome this absolutely beautiful sound!
How could a fucking live performance sounds like this? Amazing!
na ez az
Absolutely amazing for ever times
no Steven, you are special, very special..
Absolutely Amazing !!
What a fantastic piece that I've never heard despite being a huge PT fan. How could 6 people disagree?
those who dislike listen to niki minaj and justin biber! this guy here is very under-rated!
AKSHAY KARTHIK don't hate them! accept them as different! :)
your right man! :) cheers!
6 people disagree because they are musically idiots ;-).
there's a reason this is "thinking man's" music
This song explains me and my mental state like no other song ever will. Just pure magic, felt like I've been transponded to some other dimension.
The sound quality on their videos is remarkable. Such great songs deserve it.
Must admit, being a huge DT fan, this is also eargasmic. Great musicians and artist. Respect!!!
The sense of finality evoked as Steven comes in with his first solo in just mind blowing, how simple but timed and executed to perfection.cant praise him enough.

Pure chemestry !!!
Dont Forget : John Wesley , he was absoluty great for the lives !!
agreed! both in guitar and voice he really added up to PT
You will sure make great presentation slides with those PPT since you preferred it
Better performance than studio version for me.
SW/PT have always done better live than on the record. I really can't put my finger on why.
this is when you know the band is high quality

A light snow is falling on London
All sign of the living has gone

And no-one gets off and no-one gets on
Don't hate me
I'm not special like you

Inside the ghost of a parting
And no-one is left, just the cigarette smoke
Don't hate me
I'm not special like you
I'm tired and I'm so alone
Don't fight me

Yes .... i have the same conclusion after comparing Studio and live performance...... Feeeeeeeliinggsss ..this band changed my life...
Chills...Chills everywhere.
Beautiful
Love Richard's atmospheric soundscapes!
The guitar solo makes me wanna destroy somthing beautifull while i cry in rage...
Give up your rage and forgive. You'll feel better.
