That's the awesome Colin Edwin ! Believe it or not, I have a friend that looks just like him, even his wife was amazed ! He has got to be the coolest bassist ever!
+TheDonutAddict Colin's always so in the zone. Even when they're going hard, he still has his eyes closed and a smile. He leaves reality and enters a whole other plane of prog :^D
It doesn’t happen often, but sometimes there’s line-ups that are just flawless. This era of Porcupine Tree is one of them. Right down to the little things like just how well Wesley’s voice compliments Wilson’s.
If there's one song I don't get tired of listening to, it's this one. Everything perfect, melody, lyrics, arrangement. This texture that Richard makes with his keyboards is beautiful.
People used to think that if you take a photograph of someone it captures their soul. And whenever I watch this concert I feel like it's kinda true. It's beed 17 years but I can feel like this is a small snippet of someone's life. The band, the audience. They are all in different places now but this recording somehow made this moment immortal. It's like it was stopped in time forever.
It''s weird. I always loved Buying New Soul, but since it was 'only' on Recordings instead of one of the 'big' albums, I regarded it as something of a second-tier song. But *this* of all songs was the one that made me go misty-eyed when they played it in concert during the recent 2022 tour. So good!
The following order, IMO for a teary breakdown- 1. Drown with me 2. I fail 3. Drawing the line 4. I drive the hearse 5. Collapse the light into earth 6. Buying new soul 7. How is your life today? 8. She's moved on 9. Arriving somewhere but not here 10. Fell so low
I'm 23 and have been listening to Porcupine Tree for almost a year now and they never cease to amaze me. They're dynamic in just the right amount, they sound great in concert and their music is so diverse. It's one of those bands that have a magical touch to them.
Or Perhaps, On the contrary, they are the ones who felt related the most with every lines, so they just couldn't handle the hatred within. I wonder, if it is some kind of dualistic contradiction, for that we always get an elusive misunderstanding from without.
Dried up, a guitar upon my knee I should have sold out when the devil came for me Dig a hole and throw it out to sea Break the code, how happy I could be I still wave at the dots on the shore And I still beat my head against the wall I still rage and wage my little war I'm a shade and easy to ignore White wall, I had to paint a door I always find that I've been through it before Close it up and throw away the key Break the code, how happy I could be I woke up and I had a big idea To buy a new soul at the start of every year I paid up and it cost me pretty dear Here's a hymn to those that disappear
I remember the lyrics being this but couldn't find the reason why Steven chose to sing "Washed up..." instead of "Dried up...". (See 2:22 for reference)
Gosh! The arrangement of this song is just mesmerising, it's one of my favourite songs of all time and this live version is phenomenal! Thank you for capturing this so beautifully!
One of the best PT songs ever ! Together with "Even Less" that can both be found on the RECORDINGS album. Actually the original RECORDINGS album was limited to 20,000 CD's and, believe it or not, composed out of B-side material that didn't make it on to the STUPID DREAM or LIGHTBULB SUN albums. I do agree that some of PT's B-sides, EP's and rarities are also some of the best songs they have ever made. Fortunately RECORDINGS is now available again in a nice digibook format again ;)
Wesley playing from 5:42 to 6:06 has a Paradise Lost vibe in it, and in fact reminds me of one of Greg Mackintosh's sublime solos. Great, great stuff. This song is wonderful but then again it's hard to find a bad song in PT's catalogue.
This song is all sorts of feels. It's hard to imagine another song even from the PT catalog that inspires this level of emotion. The musicianship as always is unparalleled but damn that atmosphere set by Barbieri from 00:01 right to the last note! Special shoutout to John Wesley's solo - possibly one of the most underrated solos from the PT catalog again but SO damn powerful!
Totally agree, I think it suits every musician today. Unfortunately music is dying (at least, the one made with instruments). For example here in Italy even after posting several announcements I could not find 3/4 other guys who wanted to play with me, simply because (at least here) no one studies music anymore, they all go singing their trap songs with stupid lyrics (Italian ones are really ugly, just read the translation of any song by sfera ebbasta which is a popular trapper here in Italy). I mean, I respect every kind of music but I'm so sad that genders such as prog, metal or rock are disappearing. My dream was to form a Porcupine tree cover band and I never could...
@@samueledangelo6163 I couldn't help but bring up the name of another band that I adore: Poets of the Fall..ur username suddenly put it into my thought. They r one of the few English-language bands I listen to at all the times; very unknown but incredibly talented group of musicians much like PT. Their music is very diverse from album to album and they're mainly Alt rock based hence huge difference in the kind of music b/w them and PT. But the similarity is that unlike many other bands/projects of modern times, they really put their efforts, time, mind and soul into the music they create. Maybe it's bcs I'm a bit biased towards them but I think the lyrics of their songs are among the best in recent times and the lead vocal Marko's voice is almost that of an Angel! Sorry for the rant!
@@Mr.Popo_og OH YEAH DUDE, I thought i was the only one who knew them but seems like I was wrong. Yeah I love them, discovered this band years ago with carnival of rust, me and my old band absolutely fell in love with that song and we played it
This is one of my favorite PT songs. I fell in love with it the first time I listened to it. The melody at the beginning is particularly beautiful and haunting.
This is how I would describe what I feel when I hear the intro - And my beating heart keeps racing on, fighting hard something it cannot see Fighting desperate, desperate to break free Not knowing where it wants to reach but to break free from these shackles that don't breach. So, close your eyes, and you will see It is you yourself, your own adversary And in that one moment nothing else remains, You can see them clear, those invisible chains. So hit hard, but still hit calm For that is the only way to do most harm Reach out, and grab what's yours to take You're perfectly composed, even with everything on the stake
woke up and I had a big idea To buy a new soul at the start of every year I paid up and it cost me pretty dear Here's a hymn to those that disappea.... this line is an hymn to all the creative geniuses all around the world that didn't have the "Chance" to live up their true passion ....
An absolute award winning composition. Few things are as satisfying like that face melting solo near the end. These dudes are true masters of their craft.
What a wonderful song..such a beautiful lift to the solo..and the solo, it takes my heart away..I've got goosebumps all over my body..hats off to these guys..Steven, Gavin, Colin, Richard and John..you are my Gods..
I just heard about PT for 5 years. They didn't play together anymore. I missed such a great band at those days but now I'm addicted. There is no band that gives me so much vibes as they do now. All my life no other band does that. The early Muse did but they come not close to PT now. This is heaveness
Got introduced to PT about 5 years ago back in Junior Year College. Still come back for this one! Everyone put together and we've got ourselves a Masterpiece, Porcupine Tree!
2024 and the 400th comment. 10+ years listening to this song and still it makes sense
Legend says that the bassist fell into a river of happiness as a child
System of a Tool too accurate. Edwin always looks like he's having the time of his life.
and some say he's still happy to this day, rumor has it.
Jealous
I envy that
with Gavin Harrison on drums one have to get happy. He just have such a ggod sounding kit.
that bassist must be the loveliest musician ever! I love how he smiles every time he plays music. A true passionate bard, I'm telling you! :)
+TheDonutAddict I have always believed the same! Haha, I love his gestures when playing music.
+TheDonutAddict The most beautiful soul musician... One of the bests at least, he really enjoys his work
That's the awesome Colin Edwin ! Believe it or not, I have a friend that looks just like him, even his wife was amazed ! He has got to be the coolest bassist ever!

The intro is just out of this world. One of their best songs for sure.
Richard Barbieri !
Totally agree, one of the best intros of all time and specifically this version.
I think it is one of the most beautiful little melodies I've ever heard.
Thats what I say anytime I listen to any of their songs lol
that's true
I don't need to buy a new soul, this song gave me a new one right at this moment for free.
+Henry Ater Maybe on a porcupine tree album
I feel the same
Same here !
I have not seen this level of sound synchronisation in my 60 years of listening.
Oh my god ! This band.
Yep. I sure wish they'd get back together...pure magic. At least they put out a lot of albums.
It doesn’t happen often, but sometimes there’s line-ups that are just flawless. This era of Porcupine Tree is one of them. Right down to the little things like just how well Wesley’s voice compliments Wilson’s.
I love the way that they all watch and wait during the intro, and Steven's acknowledgement is lovely.
Collin is the most chilled musician I've ever seen. Always smiling and playing with his eyes closed.
The gentle keyboard intro to this song should be looped so you can headphone it while looking out into a snow covered full moon night at 10,000 ft.
PT, is simply the best rock band of the last ten years. Creativity, simplicity and harmony makes the band remarkable, without any TV circus.
Sidnei Marques that's exactly the matter I always think about
10? More like 30.

Never expected them to play this in Milwaukee on their C/C tour. I was blessed, amazed, and in awe.
Colin Edwin should be back with Porcupine Tree. They can’t just simply say that there’s no place/role for you before the reunion.
Agree completely, the reunion concert at Wembley was great but it lost a bit of soul without Colin’s playing
@@johnstatham6864 it was his choice
I thank the almighty for bringing me in the era of PT...
I've always loved the way the keyboard is reflecing through Richard's shades.
Takes me back to when I was unicellular organism inside my mother's womb.
Good times...
5micky2 This! :D
Prasanna Dahal The sperm ride was exhilarating
I would have never expected to hear this song live in their new tour 😂
Amazing experience
They did not play it in Rome and I’m still not over it really
The talent here is incredible....
The intro is so beautiful, it makes me wanna cry.
The guitar solo isn't too far behind as well.
+Ishmin Singh Me too, I cry when I listen to a lot of PPT songs, oddly enough the harder rocking ones. I cry when I listen to a lot of Zeppelin :)
+Ellen Cox Yeah Led Zep are true masters of their art! For me Radiohead and PT are real tear jerkers. :)
Oh yea, Radiohead is so emotional I can't even listen to it when I am in certain moods! Nice to meet a likeminded music lover :)

5:05 This keyboard solo is amazing . What a creative sound by Barbieri
Richard is keyboard KING!!
4:57 is one of the coolest shots ever
I actually prefer this version. Loved it for years
Phenomenal drumming, as usual... Especially the pre-solo section from 04:36 to 05:08
en mi opinión Steven Wilson es el mejor músico de la historia. Si hubiera hecho su carrera en los años 70, seria reconocido como tal
The people who have disliked this song have no soul.

The most beautiful live recording I've ever heard, I've played it endless times, and will endless more...
Heavenly as usual. PT are flawless live
That piano outro is so hauntingly beautiful...somehow touches some long lost thing of past .
My soul is in peace everytime I heard PT

I hope that too my friend, it's the perfect antidote to my soul :)
I have found my Nirvana. It is here. I am honored to be able to experience such talent. RESPECT!
Still one of my favourite Porcupine Tree tracks. How it never made it onto a main album still baffles me.
One of my favorite songs by this incredable band.Fans of this should listen to Not the weapon but the hand by Richard Barbieri and Steve Hogarth!
this song just gives me goosebumps everytime i listen to it,especially the chorus!
Key board player just gets it sooo right everytime.
Dried up, a guitar upon my knee
I should have sold out when the devil came for me
Dig a hole and throw it out to sea
Break the code, how happy I could be
I still wave at the dots on the shore
And I still beat my head against the wall
I still rage and wage my little war
I'm a shade and easy to ignore
White wall, I had to paint a door
I always find that I've been through it before
Close it up and throw away the key
Break the code, how happy I could be

To buy a new soul at the start of every year
I paid up and it cost me pretty dear
