They even have a few songs pop fans can like.. such as Lazarus and a few songs from Stupid Dream. I personally like every single piece of music Wilson makes...
Richard Barbieri is really underrated I think. He may not be a very technical keyboard player like Jordan Rudess, but he is a master when it comes to creating soundscapes and filling up the empty spaces of the music with so much atmosphere.
Totally. I'm a big fan of both Rudess and Barbieri and the latter is so important to the mood, the atmosphere, the ethereal spaces. I've heard tones and textures from Barbieri that I've ever nowhere else and they contribute hugely to those deep, lost-in-headphones moments late at night.
Yeah, as a metalhead back in the day I never understood this, as a grown-up musician now, I see its real meaning, I even saw the importance of it when I downloaded soundscapes sounds made by Barbieri himself, it's absolute genius work...
You just had have a heavy session of electroshock theraphy and you are more relaxed that you have been in weeks. All those childhood traumas magically wiped away along with your personality.
Man there is a lot of headspace in this song for you to wander in. They pull you in, and let you drift, then pull you back, and set you adrift, over and over. It amazes me how they create such a feeling of depth and space, yet closeness. This song is like trying to touch the stars.
Colin Edwin was good, but definitely replaceable. John Wesley, on the other hand, completed the band when they performed live. He was the one piece that was missing on the last tour.
+vibhor vohra Gavin and Marco are the two most well rounded drummers on this planet, and Mr Wilson plays with both. I would say Marco would win technically but Gavin is my No1. Good luck with your drumming career brother.
+Big Siz Exactly, I always thought Marco was technically a better drummer but Gavin is much more musical and makes anything good but also technical, he's the best drummer I've ever heard I love everything he does.
+Parrish Muhoberac Well never forget it again :) At a push I tend to think it's my favourite PT song ever... although Arriving Somewhere But Not Here and Anesthetize and Trains and woah just so many others could be my favourite... I do keep coming back to Dark Matter.... And 8-9 minutes seems to be the perfect song length to me. Most of my favourite songs from other bands are about that length too. Dark Matter is just fucking beautiful.
Dark Matter in 7/8, and The Start of Something Beautiful in 9/8 verse and 5/8 chorus is an interesting mix of rhythms. They make odd times seem so natural. It gives their music a unique feel. I know how important story craft is to writing fiction. PT does a great job with song crafting.
+Dehangus at a drum clinic I attended Gavin said that Richard smiles at him because in their in-ear monitors that plays the metronome there is also a pre-recorded Gavin voice over giving hints and reminders on sections of music and occasionally an off color joke.
This is pure gold.... Not many people get this song but this song is on another level PT always manage to play their songs live better , than original recording....
I saw them in Pittsburgh in 2010 and it was damn near a religious experience. I hold out hope that PT will once again get together. With Gavin in KC over the next year or so, it'll be a while. Not to mention SW is working on his solo album and so that will add some time. But always hope!!
I simply cannot get enough of this song.... can't fully explain it in words... because this song is truly one of the most emotionally charged experiences I have had the pleasure of feeling. The last 3 minutes of this song is unparalleled
Listening for the x time to this song , the intro of Barbieri is phenomenal., Influencing the impact of enormous tension in this song. A big applaus for Steven Wilson and his musicians
I can't believe how could someone dislike this music, this guys are magical! They are like a fantasy, they are a myth and they will be a legend for sure. They are from another dimension, progressive/psychodelic rock/metal is an another dimension genre.
oh shit like you dont see it except when you look at normal music (planets) and it distorts the light surrounding these bodies so u know its there and is actually a huge driving force for the movement and layout of the universe
Inside the vehicle the cold is extreme Smoke in my throat kicks me out of my dream I try to relax but its warmer outside I fail to connect, it's a tragic divide This has become a full time career To die young would take only 21 years Gun down a school or blow up a car The media circus will make you a star Dark matter flowing out on to a tape Is only as loud as the silence it breaks Most things decay in a matter of days The product is sold the memory fades Crushed like a rose In the river flow I am I know
I found Porcupine tree and mr Wilson less than half year algo. I'm totally in love of his music. As a drummer I have to say that I have never ever heard anyone playing drums like mr Harrison does.....! It's truly outstanding!!! The best drummer I've ever heard! Whole band was incredible....Hope they will come back someday...
This song will always be special. I didn’t know who PT was yet until I first heard this gem back in the mid summer of 2001. From that point on, this uniquely talented band would become my personal favorite progressive group since the early 90s. Steven Wilson is a genius.
After more than two decades of music, I'd say "Dark Matter" stands alone among PT's top selections. Then again, every time I listen to their 2005 Rockpalast concert, I rethink that preference all over again . . . . .
This is a song I keep coming back to, and when I definitely fell in love with John Wesley's playing. And then Steve Wilson's incredible and just perfect guitar solo. This song is genius. My top rock guitar solo is the album version Pink Floyd's Comfortabily Numb. Always though nothing could even get close to it, but there it is.
My first ever psychedelic rock song. Discovered them years ago. I wasn't even a psychedelic fan back then, but this particular song just gave me chills, it just hits me right in the feels man. I didn't care to explore their other songs, because again, I wasn't a psychedelic fan, I was more into heavier stuff, and I stumbled upon this song by accident. About a year ago I discovered Pink Floyd and became a huge fan of them until now. But suddenly I realized that THIS is actually my first ever psychedelic song, and going back to this video, I still feel the same thing as I did when I heard it for the first time. I'm definitely gonna try listening to more Porcupine Tree songs from now on
Just found Porcupine Tree. Every track I've listened to so far (only half a dozen or so) has been amazing. So looking forward to getting to know this band's music intimately.....................
Magic! Makes what few hairs I have on my head bristle with joy, and my ears simply tingle with delight!! Amazing solo and perfect drum work. Thank you so much PT
+Paul Dykstra But what makes early PT so great is the way he did play around with production...unlike the music he does today which sounds more straightlaced and less high tech than 90's PT or No-Man. Raven... is amazing though.
The year is 2037. December 31. 08:19 pm. On April 13, 2029 Earth was hit by the Asteroid Apophis. The destruction was overwhelming. We, the survivors, are hiding in caves waiting for the planet to recover. That's all we can do. Wait... On other news, Steven Wilson, who were cryogenically preserved and had to be brought to life after the event, joined Justin Bieber and both are now happily releasing prog-pop-ish songs and making loads of dough. Literally. Money no longer exists.
It came from my friend, I never cared at first . As a grown up metalkid, I never found music is so touchy. May this group reassemble again. May we can see them live again!!! Music is not for all, it's divine , it's itself a blackhole that can take all the universe, so it also can make you cry, make you laugh!!! Good job Steven,Gavin & others(I forgot to google to know their name!!).
Wish European bands like this will show up in the USA...i know that some are gone, but thanks for all recordings to enjoy it here and Pandora !!! Love this sound !!!
This is by far the BEST band most people have not heard of.
it's not for everyone. most can't feel it.
It's applicable for most progressive music artists. But yeah, you absolutely right sir! Your comment makes my day:)
The only band that is more underrated than them is canned heat imho
They even have a few songs pop fans can like.. such as Lazarus and a few songs from Stupid Dream.
I personally like every single piece of music Wilson makes...
Never heard these before today. They just came up on TH-cam I'm impressed.
Richard Barbieri is really underrated I think. He may not be a very technical keyboard player like Jordan Rudess, but he is a master when it comes to creating soundscapes and filling up the empty spaces of the music with so much atmosphere.
his subtlety is key
Exactly.
Totally. I'm a big fan of both Rudess and Barbieri and the latter is so important to the mood, the atmosphere, the ethereal spaces. I've heard tones and textures from Barbieri that I've ever nowhere else and they contribute hugely to those deep, lost-in-headphones moments late at night.

Because music in not only about technic !!!
You just had have a heavy session of electroshock theraphy and you are more relaxed that you have been in weeks. All those childhood traumas magically wiped away along with your personality.

The synth work in the intro gives me chills everytime.
Mike Bilodeau i agree
It's haunting and effective, isn't it!
Richard Barbieri is extremely underrated.
Here the same sensation.
I cannot believe what it does to me every damn time
One of, if not in my opinion, the finest songs Porcupine Tree ever recorded. Wish Steven Wilson would reunite this line-up...
You got your wish (at least 3 of the 4)
@@lionofnaples Lets hope for 4 of the 5 for the live shows!
@@chrisvanloenen1406 John Wesley is out. He said “Ivemovedon”.
@@lionofnaples Aaah that's too bad. Let's hope they now have to play more of their earlier songs, which I prefer anyway! =p
Colin Edwin was good, but definitely replaceable. John Wesley, on the other hand, completed the band when they performed live. He was the one piece that was missing on the last tour.
Heard this version 100s of times and Steven's solo still gives me goose bumps. Just the best band ever.
Note a single note wasted, everything in its right place.
Yesterday I woke up sucking a lemon
Fabian araya Yesterday I found out that the world was ending.
ah, what a beautiful reference connecting two epic bands
That's awesome. Radiohead is awesome. Porcupine Tree is awesome. Glorious
@@IvefoundthetruthonMay "You keep me listening to The Bends"
The only prog band that doesnt insult the 60's&70's.Take it from me....I was there.
I totally get your comment, I was there 2
I am a drummer and i like the way that Gavin Harrison plays , he's just awesome. You all should see him.
+vibhor vohra Gavin and Marco are the two most well rounded drummers on this planet, and Mr Wilson plays with both. I would say Marco would win technically but Gavin is my No1. Good luck with your drumming career brother.

THE MASTER DRUMMER YESSSSSSS
Listen to the live version of Hate song. Thank me later.
Saw him play with King Crimson two years ago, he was phenomenal
I forgot how incredible the guitar solo in this is...very uplifting.
+Parrish Muhoberac Well never forget it again :)

One of the most underrated band in the world. Their music is perfect! So excellent, so original, so subtil. Oh my god... I can't resist...

Gavin says that its an goal of him to make those odd times sound so tasteful
Couldn't agree more.
That's all Gavin's "fault". Mike Portnoy it's also very good at that.
7/8 or 7/4? I thought it was on 7/4
@@firstnamelastname061 this is 7/4
The whole band enjoys Steven's solo, amazing performance, beautiful song.
+Pat Erickson I only see Richard smiling and he's always smiling at how good Gavin is.
+Dehangus at a drum clinic I attended Gavin said that Richard smiles at him because in their in-ear monitors that plays the metronome there is also a pre-recorded Gavin voice over giving hints and reminders on sections of music and occasionally an off color joke.
@@ChasingKillersMusic wow! Now i knew why Richard Barberie always smile in Anesthetize concert
Barbieri's ability to create atmosphere and mood is unrivalled and the fact that Wilson and the band give him the space to do so is wonderful.
This is pure gold....
Not many people get this song but this song is on another level
PT always manage to play their songs live better , than original recording....
vikrant ghadge I would like to thank Richard for that...the beauty of his keyboard playing comes to life in live performances...beyond epicness🤘🤘
Far and away my favorite band! Only sadness is that I discovered them so late, and because of that, may never see them live... Thanks for posting!
Luckily the live DVDs are so well made. Obviously not at all the same experience as physically seeing them live but still it's pretty amazing.
I saw them in Pittsburgh in 2010 and it was damn near a religious experience. I hold out hope that PT will once again get together. With Gavin in KC over the next year or so, it'll be a while. Not to mention SW is working on his solo album and so that will add some time. But always hope!!
guys ur so old PT got together and just played in India now lauched a new song called song of I ,amazing song
Within the last 6 months and in that short time they have all but completely de-throned my previous obsessions.
Old anathema is fkn great 2 I even so him wearing anathema shirt before

Amazing!! This is a BAND with exceptional qualities! The audience will be silent just listening and wondering how this is possible!
How refreshing to hear non-mainstream music which has originality, creativity, and energy. Well done gents!
Man, John Wesley is so great. Gavin is just amazing. Steven will have nothing but the best with him and I respect that.
Probably one of PT's finest tracks.
Thank you from my heart ❤
Listening since 04-05, driving across the country and ran intro a Katrina emergency.....made it the GA....memories are sublime...thx PTree
Breathtaking song structure, a perfect build.
proud to say my son turned me on to these guys. sometimes ya just gotta listen to your kids. this is great stuff.
Love how Barbieri is appreciating Wilson's brilliance with that huge smile on his face. He's in the moment of pure Genius
Richard excelling yet again on Key`s !, its been all said before so it is what it is .... EXCELLENT SOUNDSCASPES LIKE EVEREST !!

Such musical mastery! I could sit back and listen to PT body of work from sun up to sun down. Damn, I wish this band would reform.
Oh how I love Wesley's backing vocals.
This is so beautiful.
Saw this guy on his HCE tour. Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn Wilson is a beast.
This was the first song I ever heard by Porcupine Tree. It blew me out of the water. I never looked back. Brilliant.
Couldn’t agree more Anne-Marie!
Same for me but the only other solo that comes close is Guthrie Govan's solo in Drive Home from The Raven that refused to sing
It is truly a great solo too.
This is a sublime piece of music....
Steven Wilson solo part is incredible.
This song gives me chiiillls every time
It's an atmospheric song, it's all about the build up and ambience. It's not meant to be high energy and exciting
Easily in my top 4 PT songs of all time. I can't get enough of it. Bring on C/C!!

One. Of Porcupine Trees best songs brilliantly performed.
These guys are really close of our parallel world of light and love... This song makes me cry inside
Agreed, Steven. Now stop playing around with production and mixing and stuff and MAKE ANOTHER GREAT ALBUM WITH P TREE

It's truly amazing when a band's live performances are even better than the studio cuts!! Fucking Brilliant!!
Love both the PRS used by Steven. Simple amazing.
Love the textures Barbieri adds on every song, particularly on this one.
My most favorite guitar solo of Steven’s. 🖤🎤🎸
Plain beautiful . Flawless.
Música moderna e deliciosa de se ouvir......uma banda com essa qualidade precisa visitar o Brasil!!!!!!!
Acho bem provável eles irem p SP por causa do ultimo Closure/Continuation
Steven just flat out tore it up this night! Saw him in Nov,2016 in Phoenix. Not quite PT, still good.
When the music is so good no need for them to jump around on stage.Man this band is a must hope they re-unite soon
Spooky……hope you bought a lottery ticket
one of my favorite songs
dark matter and deform to form a star are my favorite steven wilson work :3
the ecstasy of the gods
It absolutely blows my mind how good this band was, and that I only got into them a few months ago
One of the best live performances of all time.
It's like the God of drums is speaking through Gavin's left hand. Awe inspiring.
Stunning track. Simply stunning
