I haven't made one for this show yet, but I've been slowly working through Broadway shows and making public access reviews (on insta and my website) listing the location of every potential lighting/sound trigger and content warning if that's at all helpful for folks who need it!

Hey! Small note about the trombone building. It actually operated as a COVID testing site for Broadway personnel once theaters reopened, as many shows required negative tests before entering the building for show call. There were a few around Times Square, but trombone building had the nicest clientele, free starbursts, and was well-hidden given most tourists assumed it was nothing more than an extension of the Winter Garden.

And he rose to the challenge by making it his own instead of trying to compete with what came before amazingly."

When I was a kid, I collected pins. What I did was have a dedicated hat that I put them all on. If you wanna put them all on an article of clothing, I would suggest something something easy to put pins, thick so all the pins hold, and double lined if you wanna wear them(so you don't get stabbed).

I think there's something to be said for big spectacle shows that distract, as well as smaller, more intimate ones that speak to you. The problem with shows like Hadestown and even Shucked is that on a very basic level the problems in these stories are relatable. Sometimes that kind of realness is comforting and moving, and sometimes when you're having a rough time, it's overwhelming. I think the past 3 years alone have left a lot of people too overwhelmed with relatable. Even if the problems in a big spectacle show are relatable in theory, with everything being so bombastic they don't FEEL like they are as much. Which makes them a lot more of an escape. Which I think a lot of people are craving right now.

Here in the UK, we saw this in London and it was absolutely amazing. From start to finish it was just very engaging and energetic. This is one of the best musicals we've seen for a long time. I had my doubts because the film is so iconic, but we can't recommend this show enough. They pulled it off big-time.
Brilliant songs and great performances. The actors were great and the set changes were just very clever, with precise timing. The guy who played Doc was very funny and the crowd loved him. George could have walked straight out of the movie onto the stage. There were some great ad-libs too. I don't think this review truly reflects our experience at all, despite some good reflections.
After our performance, the crowd were cheering, singing and begging for more. The 12 minute standing ovation said it all. There were even tears of joy from some. Amazing buzz from the audience and a real electric atmosphere.
It's won many awards over here and rightly so. 👏👏👏

I particularly liked your comment about this show being a social event for fans. It's very much like Rocky Horror in that respect. Seeing fellow fans in cosplay and loving the IP as much as yourself is really heart-warming. I'm a lifelong BTTF fan who is totally satisfied with what Gale, Silvestri, Ballard & co have concocted. I can appreciate that the songs aren't typical of modern theatre, but I like the throwback nature of them. Then there's ROGER BART. Seeing this show twice in the West End turned me from someone who didn't really know who he was to a major fan who now has tickets to see him on Broadway.

pin collecting: for enamel pins and the like, a pin board (literally a corkboard, piece of cardboard, etc, sometimes covered with cloth and framed, if you like) works. For badges like your opening night pin, something like a simple piece of cloth with a wood dowel on either end (read: Tapestry/Wall Scroll if you're bougee) on the wall works too. You can also use any spare bit of cloth stretched over an embroidery hoop if you want to display your pins by genre/subcollections, since hoops tend to be on the smallish side.

This is HIGH on the list of musicals I want to see. Not only because I’m truly obsessed with BTTF to a degree that can’t be described, but also because I love Roger Bart’s singing and the effort to take something so very much not a musical (like, the music in the movie is pretty important but it’s low on the list of movies I would consider for adaptation) and give it the care and attention to make it a true spectacle.
I would absolutely FIGHT someone to get into that merch store. My wallet is very grateful I don’t have the opportunity to see it, because I’d literally and unironically walk out with a good 75% of that store.

Glad to see creators talking about this production !!! Saw this on July 11th and I gotta say the energy was there throughout the entire night! The sets got bigger, more complicated, and the ending integrated both digital components and physical with the fantastic clock tower sequence and "roads" scene. It was just a joy! The finale song was honestly a surprise especially when the entire cast joined in as sort of an epilogue. Even with changes from the movie, I don't think not sticking 1-to-1 with the original source material is a bad thing, Beetlejuice executed it beautifully. It was definitely a lot of fun and I can only recommend it to fans of the movie or just fans looking for a good story to experience for the first time.

When you were talking about the "If the beginning and end is good, you'll have a good experience", it's actually a well tested phenomenon known as the serial position effect. It's a combination of the primacy bias, which is that you remember the beginning of a sequence better than the end of it due to having more time to encode it into Long term memory, and the recency bias where it's the most recent information in your Short term memory.
So when you say that it's probably a good thing, there's actually a scientific reason why.

BTTF is my first Broadway experience because BTTF is life. While I can see traditional Broadway fans not liking it, it's bringing people like me in for the first time. I'm already considering seeing other shows, and BTTF again of course. Haha It's a fun show and I think a lot of people are going to see it and love it too!

I’ve always said that, while I mainly want to work in movies, I do wanna make some theatre shows in my life. One of my ideas is for an adaptation of Scott Pilgrim which has a ton of spectacle. Most of that spectacle would probably go into the action scenes, I’ve already thought of ways that I’d use a mix of a turntable, digital media, and practical sets in a way to make the action much more dynamic, similar to the Jason Bourne stunt show at Universal Studios.

@@marianahoward5718 Like, there’s so many elements of the story that make it perfect for the stage. I mean, there’s a several month time skip between volumes three and four so that’s the perfect place for a time skip, there’s so many songs in the books already to use as a starting point (I was originally only gonna use songs in the comics and none from the movie for the show but have decided to give an exception to Black Sheep and only Black Sheep because that song has such a deep connection to the IP now).

If you're collecting pins I recommend a corkboard and/or an ita bag.
Corkboards are a nice way to display your pins at home, while ita bags are a nice way to show them off when you're out and about (plus you don't have to worry about them getting caught on anything or falling off).

I've seen BTTF twice. I went in the first time not expecting much, although I like the movies, but the spectacle and that tech is why I'm happy to keep going back. I hope at the very least, it gets the nod for Scenic Design because that was absolutely stunning. (And Roger Bart just....the cherry on top.)

There are lots of options for the storage/display of buttons and pins! My favourite is a pin banner, a piece of fabric attached to a dowel with strings that can hang on your wall. I think it'd be a really cool way to decorate the new space and show off your merch.

I saw it in Minneapolis recently and was amazed (wish I had gotten a button). Something that wasn't mentioned about the projections was how at the beginning and when they fly off at the end, the car display date is set for the exact time the performance starts. The tour also has a map that zooms into the theater location before moving on to California.
Keep up the great work! I always enjoy watching your stuff after seeing shows.

Saw it in London last year. The trilogy are my favourite movies, so I was looking forward to it but also knew it had a lot to live up to.
In summary: it really, really rocked. The songs are great and the ensemble performance is insanely good. The stage and DeLorean sequences are visually stunning too. But there are many nods to the ‘hardcore’ fanbase as well, and a couple of fourth wall breaks. The ending is spectacular too.
I’d actually recommend it to anyone

I saw the West End version of Back to the Future: The Musical in April of 2022 and I loved it so much I watched it again January of this year! I was always a fan of the classic movies so in my mind there was a lot to live up to, but I was blown away by the showmanship of all the actors as well as the amazing sets and songs. I have not been able to see the Broadway version yet but judging by the somewhat shared casts and identical props and sets, I bet it is just as amazing as its London counterpart. And even then, I bet its better, because I noticed in my two viewings that songs and dialogue were being changed in response to critics and audience members. I am so thankful that I got to experience another piece of Back to the Future history in person and I hope this show has a long and healthy run (maybe even someday being able to tour to my hometown)!

For pin collection, get a canvas to stick them into it may be difficult to secure it because of the style or the fastener but it is the best option in my opinion. You can paint the canvas black or any color really if you don't want white. It's a good way to display them in an organized manner and it's not expensive either

I don't know if it was just the performer I saw in London doing Doc, or a script thing because I haven't seen it come up, but he really hammed up the jokes and would say them multiple times, it started to feel like the groan inducing Genie bits from the Disneyland Aladdin shows. However outside of that it was a fun show! The Delorean is magic, I thought they did a great job with it. (we had a malfunction when it was supposed to crash in to the twin pines mall, it just didn't and they had to reset but otherwise great) I agree they could have cut out some songs, I noticed that almost assault of songs early on and felt like it needed room to breathe at times. But it's worth it for such gems as Pretty Baby, Cake, and those ending songs just being so rock and roll.

So, I want to comment on the understudy point you brought up. I went and saw "Back to the Future" for the first time on August 16 @8:00 PM topping a 3 musicals in 2 days thing I did. There was an understudy for Linda, but it didn't affect the show. "Back to the Future" is my 2nd favorite movie of all time (behind "Dirty Dancing" which didn't fare too well as a musical) and I had high hopes going in. I LOVED IT!!! I raved about it on my social media and within a week, I had another ticket for the show, which I went and saw yesterday as a Labor Day Sunday 2:00 matinee. Unfortunately, Roger Bart was out so Merritt David James filled in; he usually plays Principal Strickland. I held out hope that it would work, but it was not up to par. The timing was off. Some of the gags didn't work. Some of the sound effects didn't match up with the actual 'over-the-top' actions. Merritt is also not as vocally strong as Roger Bart is and some of the lyrics were lost. With that being said, the cast made it work; Casey Likes doubled down and really brought his A game to shore up some of the scenes that were just off. I got the sense this was Merritt's first time playing Doc in front of an audience based on the way the cast congratulated him. I looked everywhere to see if this was a planned day off for Roger Bart, but couldn't find anything. Will I go back to see it again? Absofreakinglutely!!! You are correct...the DeLorean is the star of the show. Both times, I got goosebumps with the amazing score as that car roared up, down and around the stage. I will continue to say what I've been saying since I first saw the show...go see it! It's just magical! ❤

    "How do you collect pins?"
Well, I can't speak to how other do it. But as for me, I bought a black denim "punk vest" (just a jean jacket with the sleeves cut off) nearly two decades ago and I've been putting pins (and the occasional patch) on it ever since. You'd think I'd have run out of space by now, but I've still been able to find space for my retro enamel smiley face pin as recently as last week.
It's a rare thing indeed for me to wear it in public without at least one person complimenting my pins.

And it just worked. I was amazed. I was wondering how they were going to show some of the things, and they did it in ways that were very well thought out in my mind. The lyrics some times going into the themes from Alan Silvestri’s original score made me happy. Definitely looking forward to seeing it again, though I will need to go to NYC or wait until they get a tour to LA.

Having loved nothing other than phantom on broadway, i had such huge expectations.
First of all the Winter Garden is such a perfect venue, great views no matter where you sit and the sound system and design of this show is unlike anything else.

It’s fascinating watching this having seen the West End production a few times, especially comparing the scene-setting and merch. At the Adelphi in London the foyer is designed to look like various storefronts (like car mechanics, florists, a Mayor Goldie Wilson sign etc.) so it feels like you’re walking into Hill Valley. Also the upstairs bar is themed after the periodic table and there is a proper clock tower and electricity connectors that you can hold and pose like Doc as a photo opportunity.
I saw it’s opening preview in London and have been back a few times since - l love it. The energy of opening preview was insane - Ollie Dobson as Marty got a huge applause when he came onstage after ONE line (as did Doc later). The audience energy was like an electric current, I was legitimately shaking after I left the show. It’s faithful to the movie, but also has fun with knowing it’s a musical. The songs may not be Sondheim but they’re perfect for the show, and while they don’t drive the plot they give you more emotional insight. Also I’m so glad Hugh Coles transferred, he was amazing in London (fun fact: the line addition “I’m your dentist” was an improv he threw in during rehearsal that they kept in)
