It's Ringling Brothers not Ringling Bros. "Bros." is an abbreviation. I've seen people do this with Super Mario Bros so it's not uncommon.

I don't consider myself particularly superstitious, but I can't help but feel that the original producer dropping dead of heart failure literal seconds from signing the contract is about as clear and unambiguous an omen as one could ask for about whether or not the production had any chance of living up to the creators' expectations.
Coming from someone who is a broderline atheist, that is as close to a sign from god you can EVER get. That's like in bright lights flashing "STOP WHE YOUR AHEAD"
That is very true, and its a repeated pattern too! Such as the Immortal Queen dropping unexpectedly dead just days after shaking Liz Truss' hand, and then a week later Truss killed the economy, her career and her party.

I am a firm believer in signs from the universe, and moments like this only strengthen my belief.

This might not be the greatest musical ever, but I will never forget being an 8 year old kid getting a high five from Spider-Man before he starts swinging over the audience. My favorite superhero was real in that moment.

@@Checkmate1138 it really made my whole trip. It was my first time to New York so my family decided to go to this show. I’m from Massachusetts so everything about the city amazed me. We got to the show and it was right after the Freak Like Me song that I will admit, 8 year old me got scared seeing all these bad guys as it was as real as Spider-Man at that moment too. My dad and I walked outside the show for a minute before walking back in. We didn’t want to walk by people sitting in back of us because we thought that might be a rude thing to do again so we just stood by the railings and watched. My dad pointed to the left of me and we saw Spider-Man getting ready to swing. There were platforms off the railing for easy access for the performers to jump and swing off of. Before being fully tightened and ready to jump, the Spider-Man about to jump looked at me, a kid scared of the Sinister Six and ran over, gave me a quick high five than ran back on the platform. Before jumping in to save the day, he turned around to me, did a little wave then jumped off. If that wasn’t enough, when walking outside after the show, we saw one of the performers in his Spider-Man costume holding a little bucket. He was collecting donations for a charity and after looking at me, said “High Five Buddy”. Two Spider-Man high fives in a single day. This was my first Broadway show and for everything that went wrong at some people’s showings, the night I saw Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark was nothing short of perfect and beyond that.
I also went and collected some of the “webs” Spider-Man shot at the audience after the show and still have them to this day😂
I watched two shows, summer 2011 and 2012 and they were great. Execution and the swinging scenes was extremely well done. I can’t say for the shows where they screwed up or even the first one but when it works it was fascinating. It was an ambitious show and no movie will come close to it in immersion.
You got to admit that set design is awesome, the angular exaggerated perspectives of the skyscrapers almost give a vibe of the old sci-fi Metropolis

No I agree I liked the sets too, I saw it on Broadway even though I didn’t want to (I was with my little brother so…) but the most memorable aspect for me was the sets and stunts.

I've always liked the scene where peter in jumping in his room, since i watched a video of it. Pretty creative way of doing it. The story, music and songs are pretty bad though xD
She cut out Mysterio? That guy's whole gimmick is he makes practical effects. He would have been PERFECT!

I used to work at an upscale restaurant near Broadway. The day after the negative reviews hit, I approached my first table at lunch and asked the lone man waiting for his friends how his day was going. He said, "TERRIBLE!", not in an aggressive or insulting way, just matter-of-factly, like he simply wasn't going to pretend his day was even close to being okay. As I walked away I remembered, too late, that he was Michael Cole, producer of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark". So, yeah, not a great day for him.

A Spider-Man musical WITH STUNTS on BROADWAY sounded like one of the coolest ideas ever. It’s a shame there were too many problems with it.

I just thought of an idea.
Couldn’t they capitalise on the fact that it’s Broadway and make the story about Peter attending one of MJ’s plays, and then the Sinister Six take everyone in the theatre (including the audience) hostage, and this would be something unique from any other Spider-Man media and would actually take advantage of the fact it’s a play. This would also be super immersive as the audience is a part of the story.

You know the saga's gonna be good when it starts off with "the producer literally dropped dead as they were looking for a pen to sign the contract with"
sounds like a good reimagined origin for Mysterio, he finally lands that broadway play but the producer drops dead before the paper was signed, so he uses his techincal knowhow and broadway stage skills to get revenge on the broadway company when Spider-man comes in to stop him because he was out on a date with Mary Jane when his spider senses began tingling.
I will never understand why this wasn't just a Cirque de Soleil style Vegas show from the start. It would be a fantastic way to bring spiderman to a live performance setting.
It really should have gone straight to Vegas, there's no reason it could have gone better on Broadway than Vegas (at least without existing in Vegas first). That's where people go to see this sort of spectacle. I just wonder if somehow this team was completely unaware that the rigs and tech would have been nearly a non-issue. Or, were they somehow so blinded that they thought regardless of production cost, they'd make more money on Broadway because more kids find themselves there than on a Vegas trip.
Yes! That's brilliant! I know NiGHTS is based off Mystere but from what I've seen of that, KA and various others including the Avatar show, it would have worked brilliantly, they've got a unique style.

I can't believe they actually renovated a historical Broadway theatre just to have actors fly around and fight.
to be fair, pretty much every Broadway theater (and most buildings) in NYC is historic, and a lot of musicals do some renovating before opening.
That is hardly surprising, a lot large scale blockbusters do that to varying degrees!
Funny you mention that because they indeed, renovated the threatre once again a few years ago and now it houses Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on Broadway, which also includes actors flying around lol

I did some acting work on Across the Universe, and we shot the "Across the Universe" song scene in winter. At night. With a wind chill of -25 F.
And it was a scene set in spring.
There were heaters, but they didn't help. We were freezing, literally, while wearing spring clothes. And I didn't get the worst of it. There were actresses wearing spring DRESSES.
Oh, and we worked til 4-5am.

Taymor didn't give two shits about actor safety. Ever.
Let's all appreciate the actors, stunt doubles, and technicians that worked on the show. I can't imagine what it was like.
My one of my teachers, was costume design assistant on Spiderman Turn off the Dark. She said all of her gray hairs where from the show.

I saw Natalie Mendoza as Satine in Moulin Rouge on Broadway a few weeks ago and she was outstanding, I can’t believe these previews were her Broadway debut. Glad she’s doing much, much better now than being left dangling in the air or getting a concussion.

Even better, Hadestown had a very long and dramatic road to Broadway. Not because it was expensive or poorly reviewed, but because they recognized early on that they needed time to flesh out the story.

You should look up a list of the worst ever musicals. There was a Tess of the D'Urbevilles, and a Moby Dick musical.
ESPECIALLY cuz everyone does Musicals...as the SAME CLICHE song-and-dance crap, instead of creating something new and that FITS something like this. It could've been a Bway show WITHOUT singing, for instance!

On the other hand, some can surprise you. The Legally Blonde original book kind of sucked (allegedly), the movie was iconic, and the musical was amazing.
So one of the biggest issues was Taymor herself. Her fundamental misunderstanding of Spider-Man as a character, a pretentious spider lady. The idea was too ambitious for its own good. bono had an insane idea that he didn’t want to follow through on. The technical issues were too big to overcome.
It also demonstrates a fundamental misunderstanding of the myth of Arachne. She was not a goddess, she was a mortal woman cursed by Athena, either as a punishment for hubris, or in retaliation by Athena after Arachne made a point about how Zeus and Poseidon regularly abused their power over mortals, especially mortal women, for their own pleasure, depending on the version of the myth you're reading. She's turned into a spider because she either shows hubris by beating Athena (or thinking she can do so) in a weaving contest, or by weaving lifelike images of Zeus and Poseidon abusing their godhood, causing Athena to pull a "my daddy works for Microsoft" and turning her into a spider out of rage, with the logic being that she should be cursed to weave for eternity.

I mean, there's a reason that his name is "your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man." Because he's just that, a man. Not a god, not a hero out of ancient Greek myth. He's a man who has some power and a great sense of responsibility.
Truthfully, I don't think the Greek myth approach would ever work with a Marvel superhero, because they are so often written as people with power. As opposed to say, DC, who wrote archetypes/symbols that later became people.
Fun fact: MatPat from game theory was offered a role in this and he basically said "that's it, I'm quitting theater and instead going to make really good videos where I overthink video games on TH-cam." That's not actually what happened but the thing is, if this show wasn't so dangerous we would not have game theory.
I actually heard about this in his Spider-Man power loss theory video. I didn't know that he was actually involved at one point, and I certainly didn't know that this thing was actually dangerous. All I heard Mat saying was 'star in terrible Broadway musicals', so I didn't have much to go on. Good to know he rejected this, cause if he had been involved, he'd be dead, and we wouldn't have our theory podium.
He’s still actually helping out with theater. I heard that he and Steph were actually producers on this one horror based play recently.

I love that after all of this, Reeve Carney (Spider-Man) and Patrick Page (Green Goblin) are both a part of the Hadestown cast. It’s nice that they were able to work together again on an insanely successful musical after all of this!

I don't think they set out to lose money on purpose. If they wanted to waste money, they could have just set a big pile of money on fire, filmed that, and the result would have been more entertaining.
In the first moments when he said that it was started by one veteran producer and a young lawyer, who really wanted to become one I was like "wait, this sounds almost exactly like the setup to The Producers"
I guess this musical is what would happen if Max Bialystock died in the first act, leaving clueless Leo to manage the whole operation.
I saw this show IRL years ago with my brother in law.
The 'dream' scene with the spider goddess lady was so ridiculous. She was slowly spinning around peter in midair while floating above his bed. All while they're having normal back & forth conversation.
My brother in law couldn't hold it in and just burst out laughing. And it was contagious. I started laughing with him and then people nearby noticed us and it made them realize how silly this was and started laughing too.

no this scene is a necessary piece along with Peter and Uncle Ben`s dynamic before Uncle Ben`s death and Peter`s Origin FOR THE SHOW. its visually stimulating as well unique and interesting. The execution should be ominuous and mysterious not "laugh inducing".

Your description of Taymor sounds exactly how Minda Kaling handled the part of Velma in her titular series. Rather than drawing from the character's history, she used it as a way to inject herself into the show.
As for Spider-Man, I recall seeing a promo for it on American Idol, and still remember bits of Rise Above.
They should make a musical...based on the making of this musical.
The climax/end of act 1 could be the cast playing the producers, script writers, and Bono/the Edge etc...arguing through their own egos while "on stage" the stunt performer is jumping off and plummeting into the pit. Symbolling the plummet of the production at that time.
If done well you would actually have a plot with all the twists, turns, heartbreak, shock, loss and pain that happened behind the production of STOTD, as well as the acrobatics and drama of the original. Especially if it is written to parallel each other.
That is something I’d actually love to watch.
That sounds highly entertaining, id watch that.
But only if that big argument takes place in song form, with all the finger pointing like that song from Into the Woods.

Just a thought: the Spider Gwen storyline could work better as a musical. Using the ideas that she’s in a rock band, and was a ballerina, as the whole aesthetic of the show.

I saw this on Broadway. I didn't care for it, but from a technical stand point it was absolutely incredible. A spectacle that probably would've had a better life in Las Vegas.
Tiddlers that I can see like back in the day the Batman shows at six flags it’s more a themed park type show then a musical I mean and those things should live outside of theme parks I love those little cool 30-25 minute shows

If they had to renovate an entire theater to put this production on, then how were they planning to take this production on tour if it were a success? obviously they aren't going to renovate every theater they took this show to. That's a red flag right there as to why this was going to be a disaster.
I mean, great comet kinda renovated the theatre (albeit much cheaper and not as severely) and I heard there was a plan for a tour, so I guess they’ll have to adapt it to a proscenium stage
I remember reading that they wanted to do stadium tours in London, Vegas and Hamburg. So they seemed to have accepted that a normal tour wasnt possible.
Lol yah no wonder they would be in debt as every theater has to be retooled to be able to use it for production. I dont think they want to be perpetually losing more money than they took in, unless they are just insane.
If they moved to Las Vegas which was their second choice Las Vegas had lots of stunt shows and the theatres would be perfect. This should’ve been in last Vegas originally.
Also, productions of most shows are often modified because of the temporary nature of tours. Certain elements are sometimes cut altogether because they can't build into a stage like they can for a sit-down performance.
I can’t imagine how the cast and crew felt for working their butts off, having injuries, technical issues and just hoping it all goes well. For that dedication to go to waste 😔
Hopefully, things got better for them in the long run, otherwise that would be truly pitiful..

Honestly I survived is a great thing when job hunting either for theater or elsewhere. I mean I've worked on tons of projects both when I was a kid and when I became an adult and lead and worked under for these projects. And the one that hit the most bumps or had that one asshole leader usually made me more capable for future projects because I had experienced Murphy's law. It's ultimately a glass half full perspective but it's something to admire that when the going gets tough that people stick it out till the end.
Not advocating for people to just endure abuse tho. That would be toxic. We all have limits and people should do whatever it takes to take care of their physical and mental health. But bumps on a journey just make the journey more interesting, in my opinion.
My aunt played Emily Osborn in this musical. I must’ve been 11 when I saw it for the first time. She took me back stage during intermission and after the show. I work in the media industry now, behind the cameras, but she really inspired me to keep pursuing my acting dreams.

I met Reeve Carney AND Patrick Page (Green Goblin) in 2019 when they were in Hadestown, and I asked them if they regretted doing SMTotD and they said No! They said that it was a great learning experience in the field. They're also super nice guys and I have autographs from them!

I was in college for my theater design degree at the time, and the whole department was glued to what was happening. I met a woman who was almost cast as Mary-Jane. She was the runner up for the role and didn’t get it because they wanted someone already established. She said she was really sad for a while because it would’ve been her Broadway breakthrough but now sees it as a blessing in disguise instead lol

As a Vegas girl born and raised.....they really should've launched it in Vegas. We have the rigging built into a lot of theatres with people who have experience with the rigs that would've saved them time, money, and safety concerns. Probably could've cut the budget in half if they just started here
It was a troubled production, but I still have a soft spot for it, my uncle Patrick Page played the Green Goblin and it was a really cool, fun role even if the overall show had a lot of complications.

I saw this show as a kid in New York and I honestly loved it. At that age seeing the characters fly over you is like a dream come true.
There was a similar show that suffered a similar fate to Spiderman called "Star Light Express" many kids liked it as the cast wore roller skates and it was a show about trains that the composer had written for his young son. Perhaps Spiderman would have done better if they used a story line with out the greek god aspects and focused more on being a family show experience like cats or lion king. Also, very Jelly that you got to see it! Wish I had! 🙂

A guy with whom I was in theatre in high school had a role in it as one of the trains, and I got to see a preview performance. Andrea McArdle was also in it in a small role. They were still having technical problems, and the set malfunctioned in the middle of Act One, causing a 20-minute delay (so they skipped the intermission). I think there were moving platforms that had to get to the right place in time for the actors on roller skates playing the trains to roll over them, or disaster would ensue. I got the impression that the whole thing was very dangerous. My friend told me that every night after the performance, he had to go see his chiropractor.

From the way the documentary frames it, I am inclined to agree - the trouble ultimately started because Tony Adams had died. Had Tony Adams not died, he could have shadowed Garfinkle well enough to get Taymor to tone down her script and directing to be less reliant on acrobatics and be without the unnecessary bloat of the Greek goddess Arachne. That way, the show wouldn't have gone over budget due to the excessive demands, would have gotten its funding without much trouble, and a better play could have been produced (perhaps one with Radioactive in it!)
Its funny to think how the death of one man could so easily change things.
Look at the fallout after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, that's a pretty amazing case of dominos falling across the globe. The death of one person can have massive reverberations when certain criteria are met, even more so in today's world where information can be shared live or seconds after an event. There are definitely some negative aspects to having that immediate communication across the world, we are now faced with "if it bleeds it leads" news telling us all about the terrible crime in places you never go. Even worse we now have to hear about the plethora of death, greed and abuses that plague the world and almost no one speaks about the good things that happen, it can make ppl a bit crazy and make a bad situation a hundred times worse.
There's an alt universe out there where he didn't die, and this show was the best Broadway show ever, and not even Hamilton would've dethroned it.
But we'll never see it.

I saw this on Broadway in 2012. There was one part where Spiderman swings up onto the balcony where I was sitting and Spiderman waved at me. I will remember that moment for my entire life because it was an amazing moment for young me (I was 7 or 8 at the time.)
When your lead producer drops dead just before the project officially comes into being.... that's just cursed man... Theater people are superstitious folk, you would have thought they'd have got the message and quit while they could.
Then again, I remember my family being absolutely glued to the drama when all this was happening so I do have to thank them for the weeks of entertainment every time I heard about something else going horribly wrong.
I'm not a superstitious person, but I think Tony Adams dying of a stroke right before signing should've had been taken as a sign to back out of producing the show and prevent the train-wreck it ended up becoming

guys, I cannot begin to describe to you the intensity of my devotion to Toby Maguire circa 2002. it was the stuff of poetry. you would weep. many a night I would rush through my math homework and piano practice so I could make time for my real passion of writing love letters to Toby Maguire, in which I would write detailed descriptions of our future as a married couple with two children and a dog (a labrador named Ace who would fetch our mail and accompany us while we drank lemonade by the fire - I was scared of matches so naturally Toby would light the fire). said passion mysteriously vanished around the time that the third Spiderman movie came out, but for a time, Toby and I were destined to be together. truly, we were infinite.
God, this could’ve all been solved with one simple solution. Rewrite the script. I understand when you have a character that’s as fantastic as Spider-Man, you want to use it all. Unfortunately, you can’t do that in theatre all the time. They should’ve wrote a smaller more personal story like the characters origin.

Liam J.A. Quigley They could've just adapted the Death of Gwen Stacy story, which could've been amazing. It has some good Shakespearean drama at the core of it. Peter chooses not to expose Norman Osborn as the Green Goblin in order to protect his best friend, Harry, but that ultimately ends up costing him that friendship, and the love of his life.
Heck, Peter and Gwen would make for a more interesting couple for a musical, since they start out hating each other before eventually falling in love. (Though then again, MJ secretly found out he was Spider-Man on the night Uncle Ben died, so you wring some nice drama out of that as well.)
You could've done something really beautiful with Gwen falling "down" in slow motion over the audience, while Spider-Man is back onstage at the "top" of the bridge, trying to save her. And then have her stop very suddenly when the web catches her, to depict the jolt that ultimately kills her.
(The moment when Peter realizes that Gwen has passed while cradling her in his arms never fails to be heartbreaking. "Gwen...? No. No no no no no. You can't be dead, honey! Don't you see? I saved you...")
They could have done something like Spider-Verse, since part of why I loved that movie so much was how different it was from other Spider-Man movies, but still had the heart of the character in there.

Funny story about Japanese Spider-Man's "Power Ranger" robot. The show was made by the same company that made Super Sentai, which was later brought to America as Power Rangers, and apparently the robot in Spider-Man was so popular that it became the reason those shows had giant robots as well. So Power Rangers has Spider-Man to thank for their giant robots.
Based on what I know of past Marvel adaptations (pre MCU) the removal of Doc Ock, Vulture, and other characters may have been related to IP rights and restrictions, rather than ONLY Taymor needing to put her stamp on the show.

@bilbebop As far as plays go, it’s had its fair share of accidents, both on stage and on screen. A lot of the well-known stage accidents are theorized to be because the play is known to be shorter, less expensive, and generally more low-effort than Shakespeare plays, and thus is used more often by novice groups. Considering how many prop weapons are needed for the play, this can cause problems. Stabby problems.
Of course, the superstition is rooted in some witch-related story which varies from telling to telling. Either Shakespeare used a real spell which attached a curse to every production, or outside witches cursed the play either because the spell was real or because they were being represented unfairly. Either way it’s a spooooooky curse.
All of this is to say that yes, there’s probably non-supernatural reasons for the curse, but also it’s a fun story and if it is real I’m sure as hell not going to let myself get cursed
There are actually a few mediums like that. The opera “La Forza Del Destino” was considered cursed for a long time because world famous baritone Leonard Warren died onstage after finish an aria about how he did not fear dead.

I really like her, but she's totally wrong for this. If you're going to do superheroes, you really need to be aware that they are what they are. They're not high culture. They're not intellectually compelling. They're not high art. It's also really hard to show a lot of character development in a stage play if that's not the main focus of the production at large. (Death of a Salesman doesn't have pyrotechnics and giant choruses.) It's doubly hard to show character development with kitschy subject matter from the onset. You need a zippy story and some compelling visuals. She's not that person.
Kudos to her for trying to give a movie turned into a Broadway musical (tacky and hateful as a whole) a bit more depth. She way, way overshot though. Again, kudos for trying to make something a bit smarter that would appeal to theater snobs and people from flyover who just want to see their favorite movie on stage. D- for overall results though. If she came into this thinking the audience is roughly the same as for a production like Sponge Bob The Musical, she would have been more successful. Sponge Bob doesn't need an overarching story about saving our marine habitats. Sponge Bob is Sponge Bob. Spiderman should have gotten the same kind of treatment.

When I first heard about this musical my first comment was "So it's a Cirque Du Soleil show mixed with a superhero movie and performed on Broadway.... that's brilliant." But as things continued, it became clear that they had people who didn't know how to execute a Cirque Du Soleil show. They should have just gone to Las Vegas, built a special theater for it, hired Cirque Du Soleil to produce it, gotten someone who loved the comics to direct it and had a show that would have run for years. It's classic "people believing their own hype." People who think that because they can direct a good musical that they can direct a good circus show as long as there's pop songs and they call it "a musical." No, this was a circus show attempted by people who don't know how to do a circus show.
Something that wasn't mentioned in this video is that the producers did initially reach out to Cirque Du Soleil about co-producing the show as a joint venture. The powers that be at CDS - who actually had experience with this sort of thing and knew what they were talking about - came back with an estimate of both the money and length of development / rehearsal a show with the proposed aerials and effects would cost, and the Broadway producers turned it down because they thought it could be done cheaper and didn't want as long a development process. Of course, given all the setbacks before it finally officially opened, they probably ended up close to what CDS had estimated it would take, but with all of the focus having been on the technical end, the story suffered.

Of course CDS made the huge misstep of trying to branch out to a younger straight male audience with "RUN" that was like... a live action Fast and Furious movie. It was full of car chases and stunts and projections and... explosions and stuff. They spent a fortune on it and it was completely ignored. They lost tens of millions on it and it closed in about 3 months. It was a huge reason that CDS went bankrupt and is probably going to shut down for good. Fans of Cirque Du Soleil weren't interested in seeing a live action movie and fans of action movies didn't want to see a bunch of acrobats acting out action sequences from Fast and Furious movies.

This is an interesting video, thank you very much. One thing to add: In Greek and Roman mythology, Arachne is not a goddess - she is a human weaver who challenges the patron goddess of weaving to a duel and gets turned into a spider as punishment for her hubris. I feel like it has some sort of poetic parallel that the musical failed (amongst other reasons) because Taymor thought she could do a better job on the story than the original comic writers had done.
I agree with you in that it should have been a touring company. Hell, they should have partnered with Cirque du Soleil in Vegas; their acrobats could have handled all the stunt work while you had your Broadway types doing all the singing. Even if somehow they had incorporated singing or speaking into the aerials, that could have all been done by the actors offstage. I seriously doubt anybody was going to be watching to see if the people doing all the acrobatics were speaking.
In short: *everything* went wrong.
And then some!
This musical sounded like a complete dumpster fire all the way through the video, but I’ve gotta say, looking at that set was crazy. I love the direction they took with it, especially Arachne’s whole cool spider look. It would’ve DEFINITELY done better if it was in Las Vegas, but of course it had to go to Broadway. So sad that they wasted that amazing set design on that sad excuse for a musical :(

Would have worked a lot better as a travelling (and thus scaled down and cheaper) show. Las Vegas might have worked, maybe, but Spider-Man is primarily a family friendly enterprise with kids as the target audience. Kids aren’t usually going to Vegas.

When that's not what Arachnes myth is about. Her story is a cautionary tale of a prodigy who let her talent go to her head. After taking her own life from the humiliation of losing, Athena takes pity on her and let's her live on as a spider, so her weaving talent can continue, but so she still gets humbled (not a superpowered goddess of spiders. Just a regular spider)
Taymore, U2, and the producers are Arachne in this modern day greek tragedy of a production.

This play will always be special to me. My uncle moved to New York when I was little so I only got to see him once a year. He worked on the show as well as a couple of other broadway musicals and my favorite superhero growing up was always Spider-Man. He was good friends with the guy who played Spider-Man in the play and got him to dress up in the suit and tell me happy birthday one year since he wasn’t going to see me for my birthday that year and that will always be one of my favorite birthday presents

Sure she did Lion King but that was a story that kinda needed a unique visual style to work on stage how else are you gonna depict a lion singing with a meerkat and a warthog on Broadway without it looking ridiculous? How did they think this was gonna go? she is the exact wrong person to do a superhero story, it’s like when they got Ang Lee to do a Hulk movie and a good chunk of it was Hulk staring at the tranquility of nature

Yeah, she's very sophisticated. Her approach and aesthetic are very intellectual. She doesn't pretend otherwise. Why anyone thought they should hire her for a production that's essentially kitsch from the start is beyond me.
She was perfect for The Lion King because The Lion King is basically Hamlet, and since it's about animals, it needs to be heavily stylized. (Or it would be Disney on Ice, and they clearly didn't want that.) There's a lot of meat there to work with. Superheroes? Not so much. I wouldn't want to watch Seth MacFarlane try his hand at writing something Ibsen-esque, and I wouldn't want to watch Ibsen's take on Family Guy. This is 100% that level of mismatch.

The accident with the Mary Jane actor and Spider-Man falling is coincidentally enough, how Gwen Stacy died in the comic. Even the Spider-Man actor immediately jumping after her was similar. The only difference is that this Gwen is safe and Spider-Man kill himself instead.
Plot twist: That was the REAL Spider-Gwen origin story.😅
Here's how Arachne could have worked as a plot element, maybe: Have Peter become Spider-Man by accident as usual. Have Arachne be awakened from slumber to her surprise by the sudden appearance of a spider-based hero, something she hasn't seen in thousands of years. She is initially shocked and annoyed by Peter and refuses to offer help, but by the end of Act One he has proven himself "worthy" of her guidance.
I don't think adding Greek mythology elements to a campy sci-fi story would ever have worked. The theming clashes.

Moreover, if Norse mythology is "real" in Marvel's stories then it probably wouldn't phase people too much.
@@stapler942 It could work, but I don't think it could work as "Spider-Man with Greek myth add-ons". It should be something like Batman Ninja, where the whole thing is built as Greek Myth: Spider-Man Flavoured. Really feels like they picked the wrong director for this franchise. Just because it worked for Lion King doesn't mean it'll work with any "children's media" (or whatever connection they saw).

Funnily enough, around the same time Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark was still a prevalent topic in regards to Broadway, I was on a high school field trip to New York and saw a different show...starring Tom Holland! (The current Spider-Man!)

@@loneronin6813 Tom Holland never did Billy Elliot on Broadway though. He was in the London production for almost 2 years and only left in around 2010 once he'd aged out of being able to play Billy.

@@loneronin6813 In terms of when to use "Broadway", it depends on what you're referring to. If you're referring to musical theatre in a general sense, people can and do use "Broadway" as shorthand for that (so like..."what kind of music do you listen to?" "Broadway"). But in terms of location, Broadway's where you perform *specifically* in New York (and to make things even more complicated, a show only counts as being "on Broadway" if it's along that exact street and in a big enough theatre; that's where all the "off-Broadway" and "off-off-Broadway" shenanigans come in). In the UK, our main theatre district in London is called the West End. So Billy Elliot as a show played on the West End and on Broadway but I'm almost 100% sure that Tom Holland only ever did it on the West End.
So, to sum up all this waffling, if you saw the show in New York, you wouldn't have seen him.
