  • What qualifies as “Sacred Music” ?
What did the second Vatican Council teach about it?
What does the future hold for the fate of Gregorian Chant and other ancient forms of liturgical music? Can the Catholic musical tradition be saved in the face of so many modern obstacles?
Joined by Johnny Rokosz (*music director for Most Precious Blood of Jesus Choir in Pittsburgh*) and Nicholas Will (*composer and founder of the St Gregory Institute*), we tackle these questions and more!

Thank God for a revival in “Catholic” music. For 50 years we have been musically “worthy of pity.”

My mum used to sing a lot around the house when I was a child. I remember her singing 'Tantum Ergo' ( hope i spelled that right ) and only once at Mass when we were outside our local Parish did I hear it sung at Mass....then the penny dropped for me that it's where she originally learned it.
...The really weird thing that happened was all the old people suddenly found their voices in this Parish AND they could sing!...and didn't sound like a can of wailing cats trying to outdo eachother 👀 The mix of male & female went beautifully together. It's a pity we don't challenge our children ( who are actually much brighter than we give them credit for ) to learn some of these old hymns for choir practice etc.
In Ireland we still have the likes of the Ave Maria, Panus Angelicus, Pie Jesu ( forgive spelling ) and many old Gaelic hymns that are very beautiful - we also have some more modern music. It varies a lot from parish to parish, but boy oh boy, when it's bad it's bad, and when it's good it's really amazing! Thanks guys 👍

I'm glad I recently stumbled on your channel through the Cordial Catholic. Just down the road from Emmitsburg myself. I help out with music at a homeschool co-op. I'm not much of a piano player or a singer, but I enjoy introducing the young kids in music class to the rich heritage of Catholic music. We even do a little bit of it in Latin, but mostly in English. The little ones are learning the Arcadelt setting of the Ave Maria, Pange Lingua, and some hymns in addition to solfege. It's incredible what young people are capable of if we don't set the bar too low. The Brebeuf hymnal has also been a great help to me. Thank you for this content much appreciated.
Side note, I am a working drummer, studied classical percussion in college, spent 10 years in one of the Air Force bands, play several dozen gigs each year and I really do appreciate your line about no drums in Mass. Due to my schedule I sometimes have to attend a Sunday evening guitar Mass, and I look at it as a form of penance for me. Every time the Church tries to parrot secular society It comes off as "cringe" as the kids say today. We have priests that sometimes try to do their best stand-up routine at the homily, church architecture that looks like a 1970s strip mall, and music that is a poor imitation of secular pop / rock. Let's do our part little by little to reclaim what has been lost.

Just this episode. Nick’s audio ended up being tough to edit b/c it had a bunch of background noise, so we kept just the video format.
We have a 3 part episode recorded on women in the second century church coming out, and all of those will resume in both YT and podcast format.

The Vatican II debates are tiresome at this point, but I think it's safe to say that the Church's appeal to the lowest common denominator has utterly failed. Personally, I don't want to hear tone-deaf people in the pews trying to sing in any language because it takes away from the aesthetic and breaks concentration. I think you guys are challenging us to refocuse/reshape our minds to conform to an aristocratic or elite way of thinking and living, which is in direct conflict with today's egalitarian spirit. This, I believe, is what they really hate about the old liturgy and the Latin language.

Yea the V2 debates are very tiresome (about as tiresome as the Arian debates were by the time the Church was into the 5th and 6th centuries and *still* having to deal with them). But it’s important to build pockets of sane consensus on the ground over and against the prevailing zeitgeist (which is actually far more aristocratic…. Banal, but very aristocratic) among the hierarchy. I think what we aim to foster in conversations like these is a revival of subtlety and spiritual order. All of the category distinctions that previous generations took millennia to formulate have been completely blown apart by modernity-- hence, the general inability of churchmen today to convince even themselves that certain types of music belong in certain contexts and not in others. The profane and the sacred have been mixed into a modernist fudge. Our task is to begin the painstaking work of reviving category distinctions and then placing each object in its proper category.

"What you want" is largely irrelevant. The theology on this is clear - you're not there as a spectator to be entertained by Palestrina. You are there to worship the most high. In Tra Le Solicitudini, Pius X wrote, "There Our people assemble for the purpose of acquiring the Christian spirit from its first and indispensable source, namely the active participation [attiva partecipazione] in the most sacred mysteries."
This really isn't up for any sort of debate. If you want to be entertained, go to the opera. In church it is you and your pew neighbour's vocation to both pray and sing the liturgy.
