A lot of new technology has come along since my last video about how to live stream with an external camera. In this video I will show you my recommended setup for live streaming!

    Steven, you are a gem! We have been streaming our church service for the last few months thanks to your help. We started on the fly with me taping my cell phone to a 10 gallon drink cooler because there was an immediate need. It worked, but wasn't pretty or high quality. Thanks to you, we have a setup that we were able to afford and the quality is great I have shared your videos with several other churches that had a need. Thank you for blessing us. Much love to you and your family from South Carolina.

    Thank you so much for your helpful video. You helped me graduate from an aspirational and hopeful live-streamer to an actual producer of on-line content with our local cricket grand final in Australia. The AJA U-tap arrived from the US in four days and made all the difference. I now hope to live-stream much more in the future. Thanks heaps!!!

    Echoing the comment from the Ausi. Thank you very much for a none techno explanation of this device and others. I bought the BM UltraStudio MIni w/thunderbolt port. Spent a couple of days trying to figure out configuration. All the downloading, setup, blah, blah, blah. Needless to say, wasn't working. Came across your how to set up BM UltraStudio and learned I have the wrong unit for PC. Found your BM H.264 video which lead me here. This has got me excited about the project I'm working on again. Looks like the price has gotten a lot closer to BM products over the past year or so. Thanks again..

    Particularly appreciate the advice on SDI. I was going to use HDMI, but my Canon X35 has SDI so that's what we'll use.

    If you are only seeing the top or bottom half of your video signal when using the U-tap SDI from an ATEM device. The ATEM is seeing the U-tap as a dual link SDI (SDI level B) connection, and you need to change it to single link (SDI level A). In the settings of the ATEM on the General Tab, under Video Standard there is a "Set 3G SDI output to:" setting that you need to toggle to A.

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Or if you are using a BMD mini-converter there is a setup utility that you can run on your computer through the USB of the converter and toggle it's settings as well.

    • @TheSwampDaddy
      @TheSwampDaddy 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, but the ATEM will not use level A at frame sizes below 1080. So, it seems that the UTap is not completely compatible. What was the box you didn’t like? Other suggestions?

    Wow, I finally found someone who actually knows what he is talking about. I've been working with pro video since 1978, home video since 1983 and have been live streaming board meetings an an annual convention on TH-cam since 2015. Currently have 2 pro cameras (Canon XF-205 and recently added a Canon SA-15) and several Logitech webcams. Instead of a switcher, I use 2 U-Tap SDI to USB adapters for the pro cameras, with some 84 foot amplified USB extension cords for the webcams and everything plugs into the OBS computer. Works very well and have had few problems.

    This is great! Thank you for making the information so user friendly! Our church is just getting started in the live streaming field. Can you suggest a microphone that can be added to the Canon Camera(s) to pick up audio from the sermons? Or alternatively, if we get a switch, is there a way to use the wireless microphone that the minister already wears to get direct audio onto our feeds?

      If it works for you, that's great! I used to really like standalone devices like that, but I've leaned towards steering clear of them because when things stop working it's harder to troubleshoot. I started streaming video with a device like that and it eventually caused a lot of issues.

    Hi Steven Ballast, do you think it's possible to connect DSLR camera straight into laptop and use in OBS? What issues will this cause? If one could not afford a $300 U-TAP device, how can they achieve this? I've seen people suggest using Canon EOS Utility live preview capture as a screen in OBS, it seemed to work fine for them. Why would you not recommend that?

    Thanks so much for your video, this is super helpful. We are all set up at our church with the exception of a minor audio issue. We followed the set up that you presented on this video (purchased the equipment and set up to live stream in FB) (not using OBS software but straight to FB). Our only problem is that the audio keeps having some drops, (hiccups, cuts). We are inputting the audio from a Mixer (allen & heath QU-24) using the alt out directly to the camera. I have additionally tried the audio directly into the audio port of the macbook pro, I have also use the headphone port of the mixer to the camera/computer but we still get the drops on the sound. We are using a Macbook pro 2014 with i5 processor, with 2.0 USB ports. I have also tried on a PC with i5 vpro 8th gen processor and 3.0 usb ports but nothing is helping. could you please provide any guidance here in what we are doing incorrectly or what to do to solve this audio issue?

    Thanks so much for posting this video as well as all the others on your channel! They’ve been super helpful.
    Do you think a device like the Blackmagic web presenter is worth investing in? Or would you just go straight from the switcher to your AJA converter to the PC? I guess the web presenter helps with any scaling but I’m not really sure. I’m pretty new to all this.
    Thanks!

      Film Photography Club The only advantage the web presenter gives is that it has XLR audio inputs and both SDI and HDMI inputs. If you have a switcher (which should have XLR inputs) and plan accordingly I'd save the money and get the U-tap.

But when i plug the camera to Xs1 and then try to output it to mini recorder nothing comes through. I can see my mini recorder software reacting (changing some hdmi values when i switch camera on and off) but cannot get the picture even though at the same time it comes out from another XS1 output to my monitor. Any idea how to fix this?

    @ballast Media Hi Steven, I noticed that the Vixia HF R800 did not look as good as my 2010 Model Vixia (Hf s20). Also, why might the r800 flicker when I shoot my Panasonic VT 30 plasma screen? The portion of the image with the TV will flicker dramatically when streamed with the r800 but not my other camcorders, thoughts about why?

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The HF s20 is actually a higher model then the R800, it has a better lens. Most likely the flicker has to do with the shutter speed of the camera. Try turning off auto-exposure and adjusting the shutter speed yourself. Or sometimes just changing to a different "mode" (sports, outdoors, etc.) in the exposure settings can force it to change the shutter speed.

    Good video!! Will I be able to use Go Pro cameras instead of a Canon sort of camera? Is so, will I be able to receive sound from my mixer to my pc?? how will that work? PLEASE HELP as I am starting to plan everything to livestream my church services.

      A gopro in to the u-tap should work fine, just set it to an HD format. You'll need to run sound in to the computer using an external audio device, and then you'll probably need to do some work to get it sync'd in your encoding software (OBS)

    But what if I have an I5 16 GB would that be a good one or to update to i7.. Thanks

      Give it a try, if you already have the computer, give it a try and see if it struggle or if it can handle encoding. You can do some things to make the encoding easier for the cpu. Reduce the bitrate and choose a faster cpu preset.

    Steven, Thank you for the great videos. They are the best I found out there. Straight to the point. If you get this message I would appreciate a response. We are a small church. I am new to live streaming. We are using an external low budget camera (Panasonic HC-V785. We are connecting the camera to my Dell Inspiron 15 Laptop via a $17 HDMI video capture device. My question is concerning the sound. The sound is coming out of the sound board. Where do I connect the sound from the sound board? To the laptop mic jack or to the camera mic jack?

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, are you using OBS to live stream? You'll probably get the best results using an external USB audio device (amzn.to/3HkMFPc) connected to the computer, and then connecting your sound board to that. In OBS you'll need to add that as the sound source in your scene with the camera capture device (and mute the camera audio). You may also need to sync the audio and video together - I have another video about that. th-cam.com/video/UCmr0KwbXxA/w-d-xo.html

    Hi, I'm new trying to stream for my church. I'm using a Canon xf100 connect to the blackmagic web presenter then OBS. I'm having problem with audio echo because I'm playing worship music through the pc output to one of the input in the zoom F4 mixer. One of the output from F4 is connected as line audio into the Canon xf100. This is where the audio is captured as mic input in obs allowing me to listen to the mic inputs connected to the F4 as well. However, this causes echo on the stream whether zoom or youtube. If I choose monitor off only the stream gets the audio but no audio output to local house speakers. Choosing monitor only or monitor & output will causes the echo to be output by OBS. is my connection somehow causing the loop? Much appreciated as I am trying to get up to speed with this... thank you

    Hi Stephen, I know you speak highly of the U-Tap, however, it is a little more expensive than what my church can afford right now. so I'm wondering; would a normal (less expensive) HDMI to USB adapter work, instead of the U-Tap?

      If you are using a computer for streaming, I'd just get a usb audio interface and bring audio in to the computer that way. In OBS in your scene, add both the video source and the audio source.

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, that camera will work. You'll need to put it in to live view output on your HDMI and clear any display text. I often use the Atomos site to check if a camera will work for live streaming, because they have cataloged a lot of cameras that have clean HDMI outputs to work with their recorders. www.atomos.com/cameras/nikon-d5300

    Great video, just a question, it seems to me my quality when I live stream to Facebook is not HD.
    I the camera and Utap you reccommend with HDMI. Is it just the way it is or do I have a setting not in place

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Two questions, are you sure you have the u-tap connected to a USB3 port? (Is it blue and have SS, etc.) Second, in OBS, what are your canvas and output resolution (on the settings, video page) set to and are you scaling the output in the encoder (output page)? If you're stream is being sent in HD, eg full 720p, then on the facebook connect page it should show an "HD" blue icon over the settings "gear" button.

      Mitchell Boekhoudt using a hardware switcher is always going to be more reliable then trying to do it in software on the computer. There are some programs that will do it, like vmix, but you need a really powerful computer. It also doesn't scale very well.

    Hello There! I just got the Blackmagic utrastudio minirecorder to add my DSLR to my live streams. Facebok see the Blackmagic but does not show the live image, a black screen instead or nothing. I do see the image in quicktime... I am not using OBS or any encoding software could this be why? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

      The Mini Recorder requires drivers - so the software that uses it has to use those drivers, it doesn't show up as a webcam. So, if you use it through OBS you should be able to go to Facebook with it, but it won't work directly in the browser.

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      A lot will depend on what camera you have and it's audio inputs. If you are going in to the microphone input of a camera from a mixer (and it doesn't allow you to switch to "line" level input) a better solution I think is to use pair (L&R) of line attenuators, like the Shure A15LA (amzn.to/2NeuqvP) and possibly a hum eliminator (amzn.to/2BH8VT3) if you are getting ground loop buzz. I describe that setup a little more in my video on mixing from an aux: th-cam.com/video/SBpx3cBn5U0/w-d-xo.html

    What is the best way to get audio to the camera from a behringer x32 compact console? Having some issues with this, but playing music from my phone via an aux cable directly from phone to camera works great. I have the Canon Vixia HF R800, going into U-TAP HDMI, going into pc with i-7 and 32GB ram, all managed by OBS Studio. Just want to know if the XLR outputs are better on the x32, and if i got a cable that goes from 2 xlr (left and right) to a single stereo 1/8th inch plug, is that the best? Or am i missing something?

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need would need to convert from line to mic level for the camera, not just an XLR to 1/8" cable. But, I've started recommending people just use a simple audio interface for the computer and running audio directly to the computer. The focusrite 2i2 is great, but even the Behringer UM2 will sound better then the camera's preamps.

    What is your recommendation for using long cables to connect the audio from the mixer to the video camera and from the video camera to the video interface? For example, the video camera would be up front near the podium at my church, and the mixer and video interface would be in the back at the sound booth.

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      For audio over long distances, just run balanced audio lines. (XLR). For video, convert HDMI to SDI (amzn.to/381IrIr) and run SDI cable and then convert back to HDMI at the destination if you need to.

    @ballast Media, Hi Steven, do you know if any of the other Vixia cameras will output via HDMI at 24 or 23.98 or 30 or 29.97 FPS? The R800 only does 1080p/60 (or 59.94).

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As far as I know, all the vixia cameras only output 1080p60. Usually you have to go to a professional level camera before you can change the output on the HDMI interface.

    Super helpful video and love that you're responsive. I'm assuming you're ranting about the Blackmagic Ultrastudio Mini Recorder but the AJA is a harder sell when it's price is nearly twice that of the Blackmagic. If budget is an issue, would you still recommend the Blackmagic Recorder at all? Is/isn't thunderbolt better than USB 3 for Mac? And has Blackmagic made a list of which cameras that do/do not work with the Mini Recorder?

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oki! The limitation of the MIni Recorder is that it doesn't support 1080p60. As long as your camera can output a different video standard then that, it will work fine. I wouldn't say thunderbolt is better for Mac then USB. What apple calls thunderbolt 3 is actually usb3 on a usb-c connector. It's not backwards compatible, so if you get the Mini Recorder and have a new mac with only usb-c connector, just be aware that you'll need a $50 dongle to convert that to thunderbolt.

    • @gokid
      @gokid 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gotcha. If I'm streaming I don't think I'd go 1080p60 so that's good to know. And never knew that about Thunderbolt. Really appreciate the response! Miiiight still go Blackmagic for now just because of price but will def upgrade to AJA when the time comes!
