    Steven, you are a gem! We have been streaming our church service for the last few months thanks to your help. We started on the fly with me taping my cell phone to a 10 gallon drink cooler because there was an immediate need. It worked, but wasn't pretty or high quality. Thanks to you, we have a setup that we were able to afford and the quality is great I have shared your videos with several other churches that had a need. Thank you for blessing us. Much love to you and your family from South Carolina.

    Echoing the comment from the Ausi. Thank you very much for a none techno explanation of this device and others. I bought the BM UltraStudio MIni w/thunderbolt port. Spent a couple of days trying to figure out configuration. All the downloading, setup, blah, blah, blah. Needless to say, wasn't working. Came across your how to set up BM UltraStudio and learned I have the wrong unit for PC. Found your BM H.264 video which lead me here. This has got me excited about the project I'm working on again. Looks like the price has gotten a lot closer to BM products over the past year or so. Thanks again..

    Wow, I finally found someone who actually knows what he is talking about. I've been working with pro video since 1978, home video since 1983 and have been live streaming board meetings an an annual convention on TH-cam since 2015. Currently have 2 pro cameras (Canon XF-205 and recently added a Canon SA-15) and several Logitech webcams. Instead of a switcher, I use 2 U-Tap SDI to USB adapters for the pro cameras, with some 84 foot amplified USB extension cords for the webcams and everything plugs into the OBS computer. Works very well and have had few problems.

    If you are only seeing the top or bottom half of your video signal when using the U-tap SDI from an ATEM device. The ATEM is seeing the U-tap as a dual link SDI (SDI level B) connection, and you need to change it to single link (SDI level A). In the settings of the ATEM on the General Tab, under Video Standard there is a "Set 3G SDI output to:" setting that you need to toggle to A.

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Or if you are using a BMD mini-converter there is a setup utility that you can run on your computer through the USB of the converter and toggle it's settings as well.

    • @TheSwampDaddy

      Yes, but the ATEM will not use level A at frame sizes below 1080. So, it seems that the UTap is not completely compatible. What was the box you didn’t like? Other suggestions?

      The Mini Recorder requires drivers - so the software that uses it has to use those drivers, it doesn't show up as a webcam. So, if you use it through OBS you should be able to go to Facebook with it, but it won't work directly in the browser.

    Steven, Thank you for the great videos. They are the best I found out there. Straight to the point. If you get this message I would appreciate a response. We are a small church. I am new to live streaming. We are using an external low budget camera (Panasonic HC-V785. We are connecting the camera to my Dell Inspiron 15 Laptop via a $17 HDMI video capture device. My question is concerning the sound. The sound is coming out of the sound board. Where do I connect the sound from the sound board? To the laptop mic jack or to the camera mic jack?

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, are you using OBS to live stream? You'll probably get the best results using an external USB audio device (amzn.to/3HkMFPc) connected to the computer, and then connecting your sound board to that. In OBS you'll need to add that as the sound source in your scene with the camera capture device (and mute the camera audio). You may also need to sync the audio and video together - I have another video about that. th-cam.com/video/UCmr0KwbXxA/w-d-xo.html

      Great news! Would you have any input on what would be some good, better, best options for a 100 foot run of SDI cable? You probably have a video on it, I am just not seeing. Seems like there is a lot about the different types of cable. Most of my run is underneath baseboard heating, just one door that would need a shield strip for.

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good, better, best option is all the same.... Use 1694a RG6 cable. Otherwise, different manufacturers will use different BNC connectors on the end, etc, but the important thing for SDI cable is that it's RG6. (RG59 will be a lot cheaper, but it's not up to spec for SDI video runs.) I usually make my own cables (I actually have a video about how to make your own cables coming out next week!) but if you want to buy pre-made cables, these are good options, just select your length. amzn.to/2xjW6Zu

      OBS will only send to one destination. You can use a service like castr.io to send your video to multiple destinations. Or, a paid service like Restream.io. With both of these you would configure OBS to send it's stream to them, and then setup castr.io (or restream.io) to send your video to both FB and TH-cam.

      Give it a try, if you already have the computer, give it a try and see if it struggle or if it can handle encoding. You can do some things to make the encoding easier for the cpu. Reduce the bitrate and choose a faster cpu preset.

    Your help is just what we were looking for - big thanks... We are just starting the process to live stream our church services - We have a PXW-X70. On another You-Tube you recommended The BM Intensity. I just ordered one but wondering if I should cancel it after watching your recommendation of the U-TAP here just now. What to do? Also, can I use OBS with the U-TAP to my PC. If we cancel the BM Intensity and go with the U-TAP we will use the SDI X70 output as we will probably move up to a Switcher later. OR is there any value in putting the intensity into the component mix with the U-TAP?

      Oh... and... Lastly... I see the SDI cables seem to be rated and priced differently for some that are 'HD' - is that right? Or a way to make more money. Is there gold plated SDI - like other connectors? What sdi type cable do you recommend - we can have the devices beside the camera at this point.

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The main thing to look for is that it's RG-6 cable. (RG-59 is cheaper but thinner wire and doesn't go as long a distance.) Belden 1694A is a very common wire to use. As long as it's RG-6 cable with 75ohm connectors, yes, it is a bit of a sales strategy to label things HD or not. I usually buy a 1000ft spool of Belden 1694A and make my own cables.

      I've found that if you are using a cheap camera like the r800 or similar that the preamps just aren't very good, so your probably best off bringing the audio in through another audio interface, like the focusrite 2i2 or even the Behringer UM2. Then just sync the audio and video in OBS.

      Yes, back when I made my original 2017 video the Web Presenter was new and promising. Now that they've figured out the audio sync issues with new firmware, I think it can still be a useful solution for some people. I do think it's overpriced for what most people use it for. • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, in that both bring raw video in to your computer. (The Mini Recorder does have both HDMI and SDI connections, but it doesn't support 1080p60 where as the u-tap does, so that's a trade off you need to consider). I recommend the u-tap because #1 you don't have to go through the hassle of installing the BMD Desktop Video drivers to get it to work, just connect the u-tap and it's ready to go. #2 It's USB3 so it will work on a PC or Mac - Mini Recorder is thunderbolt2 only. #3 the u-tap supports 1080p60, which is the video standard that a lot of consumer camcorders output on their HDMI, and #4 this is just my subjective opinion, but I have purchased a lot of BMD gear, and none of it has lasted more then 5 years. Seems like my AJA gear lasts longer.

    Super helpful video and love that you're responsive. I'm assuming you're ranting about the Blackmagic Ultrastudio Mini Recorder but the AJA is a harder sell when it's price is nearly twice that of the Blackmagic. If budget is an issue, would you still recommend the Blackmagic Recorder at all? Is/isn't thunderbolt better than USB 3 for Mac? And has Blackmagic made a list of which cameras that do/do not work with the Mini Recorder?

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oki! The limitation of the MIni Recorder is that it doesn't support 1080p60. As long as your camera can output a different video standard then that, it will work fine. I wouldn't say thunderbolt is better for Mac then USB. What apple calls thunderbolt 3 is actually usb3 on a usb-c connector. It's not backwards compatible, so if you get the Mini Recorder and have a new mac with only usb-c connector, just be aware that you'll need a $50 dongle to convert that to thunderbolt.

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      How are you boosting gain in OBS? The u-tap is going through the system drivers, so check that it's volume is turned all the way up. (Control Panel -> Sound -> Recording -> look for "UT-AUD" -> Properties -> Levels and make sure it's set to 100.) Beyond that I'd run tone from your mixer, the XLR inputs on the switcher at +4dBm, so a 0VU feed from your mixer should see -20dBfs on the ATEM meters. But, there is still 10dB of headroom there, so you can still go up to a +14dBu or -10dBfs on the ATEM meters before clipping occurs. You may just need to run your audio in to the ATEM hotter. Ignore the "green, yellow, red" color and look at the measurement.

      I'd recommend you use an ATEM Mini switcher as your video interface. (Then all cameras connect to it, and you do the switching from the ATEM, one USB into your computer.) Check out this video: th-cam.com/video/kK4CFwJB7u0/w-d-xo.html

    Hey! Thanks a lot for your videos. We have a Nikon d810 DSLR, Roland XS-1HD, Samsung Monitor, Ultrastudio mini recorder and a macbook pro with OBS software. Everything seems to work, i can plug my camera to Xs1 and get picture out to my monitor. I can also plug the camera straight to mini recorder and get picture to OBS. But when i plug the camera to Xs1 and then try to output it to mini recorder nothing comes through. I can see my mini recorder software reacting (changing some hdmi values when i switch camera on and off) but cannot get the picture even though at the same time it comes out from another XS1 output to my monitor. Any idea how to fix this?

    Your videos are incredibly helpful! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and allowing us to ask questions. I'm hoping to solve an issue with streaming. I shoot with a Canon 5D Mark iii, connected to an xlr audio cable/box, and using a U-TAP HDMI box. We're streaming to Facebook Live, and selecting the UTAP audio selection...yet our audio isn't capturing. Can you point me in the right direction? Thank you kindly for your time and expertise!

      Ann Bassette Are you using OBS, or going straight to FB camera tab? Can you verify that the audio you want is getting in to your 5d? Have you tried recording on the 5d and listening to the audio?

      I record straight to FB Live. The camera is picking up audio from the board/xlr cable. @@BallastMedia

      @@AnnieBassette Try connecting the 5D HDMI output directly to a TV and see if you are getting audio. Lots of people struggle to get audio through a DSLR, so I highly doubt it's the u-tap.
