Thanks for the video. You should have added that many DSLRs have the built-in time limit of 29 minutes and 59 seconds before camera automatically stops filming and you need to restart a new clip by pressing shutter button again. This is a huge problem if you need to film a long event continuously for many hours. That's why I use a Canon camcorder for long time filming so I don't have to worry about the camera stopping the video clip when it reaches 30 minutes minus 1 second. For shorter filming events, I will use my Canon DSLRs.

I think this doesn't apply to all DSLR cameras. I've used Canon 750D to shoot a video of over 30 minutes without having to press the shutter button again. The thing is that, the video only divided into bits after the first one was up to 30 minutes. So, on the memory card, I could see the rest of the video. Thanks.
My somewhat old Sony AX-53 still smokes my Sony A7 III in several categories except for the low light. It's still very good in low light though. But if you want to hand hold the camera the camcorder is way better, and has lots of zoom. Also, I can actually just put the camcorder in my pant pockets if I wear cargo pants, or something that aren't snug jeans.
Hey man. I am going to be shooting in low to medium light, in the gym. It's a rustic gym. Former 1st round picks in the NFL I trained next to. I am trying to capture that feel, but still a very clear video. I have a gopro 8....never used it yet. I have an S10 phone.
So I was looking for a camera to use for the gym for video and also good for streaming, showing face on live stream.
Idk what direction. My options are $700 max. I put over $1400 for my pc...plus monitor etc, it's more like $1800. So my budget isn't top tier.
I hear about a Sony A6100? A Mark 4, canning 70D( if I get refurbished, it's in my range ). I'm kinda lost. My s10 can shoot 4k and it can do 940 fps( kinda ridiculous ). However, I have a feeling higher specs on a phone, doesn't translate to quality.
So idk what camera captures video in low light( not black, just dim ) but also can shoot clear and then be used to live stream.

No it won’t you just need a dummy battery and a capture card. Otherwise it’s a 15 min or so video recording

Can I add though that the compressor on your audio isn’t the most pleasant thing out there? I’m an audio guy getting into streaming and I notice that SO many people well versed in video overcompress their audio and use way too fast attack times. On speech and singing, you shouldn’t go lower than 20 ms. Everything else will make a human voice sound unnatural and harsh.

@Netluxe TV Hey man! I haven’t used the GOXLR Mini (or the PodMic for that matter), but what I can tell you applies to compression in general, at least for speech.
1. Gain: Speak as loudly as you will during the performance and set the gain so that it peaks somewhere between -10dB and -5dB. Anything higher and you risk distorting the signal.
2. Compressor attack: set it somewhere between 20 and 30 ms. Shorter attack times will make the beginning of syllables sound unnatural.
3. Compressor ratio: I’d start with something mellow like 2.5 and adjust it again after the other steps if I feel the need.
4. Threshold: set it low enough that you get no more than 5 dB of gain reduction on louder words. You don’t need more for spoken word, probably less.
5. If your compressor has a makeup gain setting: try adjusting it so that your voice seems to be the same volume as it was without the compressor. Try turning the compressor on and off a couple of times while speaking. That will give you a good comparison.
In general, my goal with compression of spoken word is to even out volume differences between words without changing the sound if possible. I’d always err on the side of doing too little rather than too much because compression can make voices sound very unnatural and you should only go for something unnatural if there’s a creative idea behind that :) Also don’t be afraid to play around with the parameters. You may end up at something different than I recommended. If it sounds good, it IS good ;)

Finally someone that knows what he's talking ... I shoot 99.9% TOY Model Airplanes and a DSLR doesn't cut it. It's not the Camera it the FK'n Lense NO PARFOCAL for DSLR. With amy (Almost any) CamCorder I can ZOOM fully and press focus in manual and anything from 15'and beyond stays in focus. NO FOCUS HUNTING period. I'm not trying to make the next big epic just a couple vids of TOY Model Airplanes for TH-cam. I hate OUT OF FOCUS anything. I want every piece of plane in focus as some poor guy turns his $20K jet into a smok'n hole in the ground. JMHO

I noticed that you showed a pic of the GH5 as the example DLSR. Ironic then that several of the benefits of the camcorder apply to that (clean hdmi, sound over hdmi, dual slots, full hdmi output, mains power available) and some are available for a bit extra (xlr input, larger battery grips).
I guess it just goes to show that deciding between them is n ot as clar cut and it'll be down to comparing specific models against the intended use.
Good point, this video is intended to be more of a generalization so that its more consumable for beginners, but its certainly not black and white, and in a few years, I'm sure things will be very different as well. You're right, it does come down to which specific model of DSLR/mirrorless camera you're referring to.
My Nikon D5300 will take audio from my Allen & Heath GL2400 and output the audio with the video through the mini HDMI output port to my UTAP to my OBS stream.
The direction goes to photo camera with video recording ! So you don't need both a camera AND a camcorder anymore ! BUT you alwas need to compare both with same price and in 4K UHD 24/25/30p and unlimited recording time. The bottleneck for an all in one device is at the moment the law and politics. Most cameras are limited to 29 minutes video recording (only the very expensive ones aren't) to not be declared as camcorders which have much higer import taxes in EU. So you can't sell photo cameras with unlimited video recording for cheap. Politicians need to change laws imo because this will suppot less energy waiste ressource waiste electronic waiste and space waiste. Why 2 devices (camcorder and camers) if you can have all in one ?
For a budget alternative to a camcorder I recommend the Lumix FZ2500 mirrorless bridge camera. Fixed 20x zoom lens with zoom rocker, lanc support, and 1" sensor for under $1k. Refurbished for about $800 and used for about $600. Much nicer optics than on similarly priced camcorders. Has the same or similar sensor and 20x zoom you see in $3k+ Panasonic camcorders. Plus has DSLR/mirrorless advantages... It's basically a cross between a camcorder and a fixed lens GH4.
Do they output a clean HDMI? I'm looking for a couple of in-betweener cameras for my lives and that might be a good option if they do.
@@ethanwilliams5332 Ethan Williams Yes. No recording limit, doesn't overheat when running for hours. Even has built-in ND filters. The only difference between it and a camcorder for live production as far as I can tell is it is micro HDMI out, no SDI out, no XLR inputs, has 3.5mm jack for audio instead. Even a headphone jack.

@@ethanwilliams5332 Oh and one other thing. If you need to shoot on battery power, the batteries are small and won't last nearly as long as a camcorder battery. So get a dummy battery and connect it via USB to something like an Anker Powercore battery or vmount battery and it will last all day.
Quick Question: We film Home workouts on our TH-cam channel and currently use a canon 70d with a 10-18 lens zoomed all the way out. We cannot back the camera up further either. Can a camcorder lens zoom out to 10mm? I'm having trouble figuring this issue out. We are looking to upgrade our setup to a 4k camera or camcorder.
Hey there! I don't think you'll find a decent camcorder that will go wider than 20mm. The 70d has an APSC sensor, meaning there's a little bit of a crop factor when using a 10-18mm lens, if you were using a full frame camera with a full frame lens, you'd probably have a wider image. Why would anyone use dslr for long recording and live streaming in professional work?... To make it work is frankenstein level of madness.
Luke Lim not anymore. Take a Sony A6400. Unlimited record time. Clean hdmi out, up to 4k. Sound via hdmi. USB power, includes ac power supply as well. Way better low light than most camcorders. And all of this straight out of the box - insane right? Oh and did i forget to mention no latency on the hdmi port which many dslrs have.
@@beesteadyproductions No bro you are still kinda wrong. I have the A6400 and you are forgetting about some other things. USB power, low light and unlimted rec is checked. But no xlr, you will need to frankenstein that. And the lack of SDI means you can't use it in pro live stream or live projection setting. Fundamentally the battery for camcorder is larger as well. It can record longer and without swapping compare to the a6400. And the selection of zoom lens in APSC there is only the 18mm to 105mm that make sense in motorized zooms lens section. any others large lens on the a6400 and it will be detrimental to the form factor of the a6400. and that lens is just a 5x zoom. Compare to the Sony camcorders 12x to 24x zoom in a reasonable price and form factor, nothing in mirrorless compares to that.
I mean it is just fundamentally a different tool. My team uses A6400 for the highlight videos and photos.My X70 sony camcorder is for conference. Of course the A6400 have the advantage of being smaller and adaptable with amazing functions and image quality. The selections of lens means great bokeh of course. using the a6400 for conference and live streaming require extra set of tools that will take time in setting up as well. Sure i do frankenstein it once in awhile during pinch, But too much heart attack on the individual parts failing and packing is a hassle as well. And also micro HDMI cables breaks easier than SDI and can't go very far. SDI cable can go a 100 metre while hdmi goes 15 metre.To frakenstein a hdmi camera for concert using convertors is another weak link in the chain.
I do concerts, conference and wedding live projection and live stream all the time. You just don't use a mirrorless or dslr to do a concert live projection or streaming. If it is a simple one camera setup near to you console yes. But if you are far away and doing multicam hell no. There is just too much restriction and hassle. You be better off with a good camcorder.
If you are talking about highlight videos go nuts with the a6400, i would say full frame sometimes isn't even needed with how good APSC camera are these days.. But still different tools different purpose
I`m agree with you i have been in to the tv industry for more than 17 years and when i see people with dslr with a lot of things over the camera i think about them they are amateurs, i`m not saying dslr aren`t good with lens you will have a deep of field very good but to make zoom an movements nothing is better than a good camcorder
Thanks for making this video!! Super useful information! If you have it or if you don't have it, there should be a link to what camcorder you'd recommend for live streaming live events. But, this leads me to a question, would the same pros/cons apply if you weren't streaming a live event but more so live streaming your own personal adventure and experience (like vlogging sort-of-speak) and/or are working independently without all the filmography equipment? Then in that case, would the only other pro DSLR's have in that case is being somewhat smaller and easier to use if you are trying to film yourself and are alone?
Nice video, I’ve jumped between the two setups a lot on the livestream productions I have done. We mostly use them in outdoor sports, weather is also a factor. In the end going for DSLR setups (GH5), but we have a Camcorder back up option with us. A couple points that don’t come across quite right, this is just from experience; it’s actually very easy to get mains AC power in to a DSLR (and many are setup for this), you can also get a clean HDMI feed out of most DSLRs (not one we haven’t been able to get a clean feed from yet).
Hey Adam, great points all around! We use a Canon EOS R for streaming and it works great. Some DSLR's will output clean HDMI, some won't (we've noticed the lower cost options don't, but it all depends on the camera brand). Either way, if you're going to buy one for streaming, just check and make sure it does before purchasing. We've seen our customers make this mistake far too often.

I use the old Sony FDR AX100 Camcorder it great, only down side in my opinion I need cables and capture card to connect to PC if live streaming needed. Thinking of paring it to a wireless hdmi encoder. Any suggestion on that?
I shot TV news for 25-years...and now shoot web and TH-cam videos for a government agency. WHen it came time to buy video gear, I went for a camcorder over a DSLR (the Panny AG-UX90...the little brother of the camcorder in the above video). The main reasons why?
1) familiarity. It's what I know--TV news stations use camcorders. I've never seen a TV station shoot with DSLR's.
2) (and this is a big reason): No need to use a separate audio recorder. I can't imagine the workflow involved in trying to sync audio to video shot with a DSLR. I love having the video AND audio all on the same source (the SD card).
3) XLR inputs. I like having pro audio inputs. I "grew up" using Sennheiser mics (shotgun, stick, and lavs)--which is what I got for our agency. I can't imagine using any other brand.
4) simplicity. I like having everything there, on my camcorder. I see a lot of independent filmmakers at our events--with lots of cables/attachments on their DSLR's. Yeah...their cameras have wider apertures...and can get that blurred-out background. But it looks like such a pain in the ass to set up a DSLR to shoot video.
I guess it matters if you're shooting a movie. But for corporate work...web videos...I'll take a camcorder any day over a DSLR.

Use a USB audio interface to send audio into your computer, and then use the best camera you have to capture the video. Scarlett 2i2, for example?

My mirrorless Panasonic dmc fz 2500 have everything as any camcorder including limitless video recording and cinema 4k. I even use battery pack to power it for really long time recording.

People like this are the ones who are messing up terminology for the rest of the industry and confusing newbies. No DSLR and Mirrorless are not synonymous. You need to state that there is a difference between the two.
For purposes of this video there is no functional difference between the two, which I bet is why the statement was made. Both mirrored and mirrorless SLR cameras function the same as a video platform for purposes of this topic.

Another problem with HDMI is they only go 50 feet for a stable connection vs SDI which can go 300 feet. Also HDMI is not typically protected from static electricity.

You can run HDMI over Ethernet. One of the advantages is that you can customize the length of your run and crimp the ends yourself with commodity tools. There are plenty of transmitter/receiver pair options at B&H, among other retailers.
True, but when you start adding more things to your signal chain, the more things you have to worry about going wrong. Not saying those are bad options, but I personally think if you can do one SDI cable for the whole run, that will be the least headache.

We agree on this. Not debating this point in the slightest. However, context is everything. Cameras with native SDI are more expensive. Cameras with 4K SDI output are rarer than cameras with 4K HDMI. If you're converting HDMI to SDI, you're adding something to the signal chain. I'm not making the argument that HDMI is the more ideal transmission medium, especially for the application in question. I'm saying that budget, architecture and environment affect whether that ideal is best (or even feasible) for a given circumstance.
Since I quoted B&H earlier, the only camera that supports 6G-SDI or higher and has a sensor of at least 1" is the Canon XF705 at $6,999. You can meet the 6G-SDI spec easily with any 1" sensor bridge camera such as the Panasonic DMC-FZ1000 or later, or the Sony DSC-RX10 II or later. It will cost about 75%-90% less.
You could get hdmi optical good for 300 feet or more.

Today is april 30th one advice to people loking for a camera, the one he is showing is a Panasonic UX-180 i own that one, it's a very good camera, with many professional features is 4k but you can use it a low resolution, 24 wide lens mean you can shot a group more closer with out being far from them, the zoom is very good to use it like a telephoto, its variable, has many features like wave form to check the light of the video, also vectorscope to check colors, has sdi and hdmi, but on the night has infra red to shot in to the darknes, the price i think is good for the product itself, also has a very good response to low light,check the model in the Panasonic shoting video with a dslr nah thats is very unprofessional at least you are going to make blogs, entreviews where the more important thing is taking plane video.in sport or live production dslr is a joke, but if you are not going to make movements maybe using a good lens to make a bohke dslr is just fine or more simple use your phone...

He basically means Canon under DSLRs without clean HDMI output. Other brands have clean hdmi out even on cheap models.
Some do, some don't! Either way, it's definitely worth checking and making sure before buying!

Mixing both camera is the best , with dslr you get depth of filed which is good for B roll, the camcorder is for static camera capturing the atmosphere of the event , i would minimize the zoom especially the camcorder with low fps

In order to shoot a live feed into a monitor or a projector, can I do that with an HMDI output of a camcorder? Or do I need a DSLR for that? Not streaming over internet just a straight output
you should be able to do that with just about any camcorder! some DSLR's will allow you to do it and almost all mirrorless cameras will as well.

Hey there! It depends on the camera! Cameras have come a long way in the past two years so what was true in this video then may not necessarily apply now. What type of camera are you using? One easy way to check is to try to output that signal to a monitor or a tv and see if you're getting audio.

Great video. I think I am going to purchase the Canon VIXIA HF R80 Camcorder that you recommended. I plan on using the camera to record my son's soccer games. If my camera is 8 feet up is there a way to control the zoom feature other than directly on the camera which I won't be able to reach? Also, would it be possible to connect an external screen to preview what I am recording? If I wanted to live stream the game, could I connect this camera directly to my computer and live stream? Thanks for any help you can provide.
Hi Michael, the Vixia R80 doesn't have a way to control zoom externally, so you might want to set that ahead of time. To control those features from far away, you'd want to look into a PTZ camera. To connect an external screen to preview your recording, you would just come out of the camera's HDMI output into an external monitor. To connect it to your computer for streaming, you'd also use that camera's HDMI output, but you need a capture card to connect it to your computer, something like this: www.elgato.com/en/gaming/cam-link-4k

That's a good question, I haven't noticed one having a longer lifespan than the other. I think the factors that would better answer that question is what make/model of camera you're using, the price point, and how old it is.

I got a DSLR.
Don't go for a DSLR if you want to record long sessions.
It auto shutdown.
Battery runs out fast. (You need to buy a 150 bucks set to keep the power on for longer time)
I heard you damage your lens if you use it to long.
None of this is true. I used an a6400 for 4 hours on continuous battery. Only paused it to swap out a card. Mirrorless cameras are now not even limiting you to 30 mins for several reasons, but one of them is because it is fully capable of handling it.

I have a cannon vixia hg20 and want to use it for live streaming, music concert 1.5 hours. Do you know what kind of equipment I need. I have been looking for the info but have not really found the info. I need to know how to hook it up also. I am thinking of using possibly OBS software. I am also wanting to use a mixing board to mix my sound and have heard that there is a delay. I have watched a bunch of videos but I am pretty low tech in general so I am having trouble tying it all together. I am a musician and more on the creative side.
Camera into a laptop, hdmi to usb capture cable, mix the sound, and plug that into the camera, that will keep the audio in sync with the video, as it will be prossed as part of the video stream
Hey, great video very informative. You should consider doing a "update" with from "start to "finish". Many people use elegato or Blackmagic ATEM linked to computer... Any chance, very relevant.
Also Mirrorless too! It is a toolbox, not one is better than the other. Your use case and who and what the event is about. I have both mirrorless and camcorder. When a camcorder is not allowed or not so omni-present, you have a tiny mirrorless or a smartphone or action cam. Tiny and not attention gathering. Site recorders are tiny and ready to roll and also don't call attention to themselves. Takeaway here, know inside and out, know all the angles. Lights, batteries, monitors,chargers, DC dummy battery couplers and so on. Smart play and save is used! New is expensive, and your used money dollars will go further. Be smart buying used. Have support. If you buy on Ebay or privately, unless specified, you are on your own. Take your time, make a list of must haves, make a check off list of must have first, what can wait. Seek mentors either church of worship, I did, or the AV team at your workplace. They are passionate about this topic and eager to talk about it. I have yet to find a team that is not. I have done audio over 50 years, video not quite as long, but do know the worst mistakes are caused by haste and not being clear on expectations, workflow, who it is for, system growth, your personal and professional growth when applicable. Also falling into GAS is really easy. I'll let you ask a pro what that means or a mentor. Some homework for you. Best part. Have fun with the process, when it just becomes work, the spark and passion leaves. Learn, and be part of a group of people passionate of what you are passionate about. Power and strength in numbers. My church has me going. Doing lights, graphics, hopefully cameras and audio later. We'll see. Get out there and be blessed the art of creation and story.
