    I moved recently and In the area where I live, I'm only getting 2.5-3 mbps up and tried streaming an offline game at 720p and had terrible results. I thought I would not be able to stream anymore =(
    But after following your video and a couple other tutorials, I'm managing to stream at 720p 60fps with 224 audio bitrate. It sounds good and the image quality isn't that bad (not ideal, but wayyyy better than before optimizing). Now I can stream again!
    Thank you so much for your help!

    Thank you for another great video. I love that your videos really focus on what a church has to do to get best sound and picture quality; the video gamers are great too, but they don't address all the same issues that churches face. Your tutorials have got us up and running for the quarantine-stream. We want to continue the live-streaming after the congregation is allowed back to church. I checked out your other videos on which cameras are appropriate, already we are making headway in making a proposal for the simplest 'sound booth' arrangements. Blessings!

    GREAT VIDEO! I'm doing a Ballastflix right now, watching all your videos hahaha. Whats is the bit rate you recommend for streaming in 360p or 480p? The internet and PC are not great in my church, and It's lagging too much (I've watched your video about that too) so I want to spare bandwidth and process power. I believe I should reduce the video resolution at the cameras and swicher too in sort of sparing the PC?

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      What video interface do you have? Yes, you can run 480p at about 1500, or 360p you could run down to 700 if you have to and still have a manageable image. Experiment with it a little. If you can add a graphics card that supports nvenc to your pc it will make a world of difference.

    Thank you for your concise and thorough explanation of the basic OBS settings, it's exactly what I was needing in my Church Streaming journey. But as a person with not quite perfect hearing, I find the (obligatory?) backing track very distracting. Jeff Swartzentruber well, i’ve learned a lot in the last three weeks since watching this. You have to have the perfect storm of a good camera, the correct configuration in OBS, and a computer that is capable of processing everything. I finally isolated my problem down to my computer. My computer is a mid 2012 MacBook Pro and it’s way too slow to keep up with all of this. I’m not a big computer guy so that never even occurred to me. I’m running Catalina on my MacBook and my day to day stuff works just like it did the day I got the computer years ago. I didn’t realize that it was severely lacking in the video processing department. I’ve since been looking at a new beefed up PC. I think that’s one of the things that a lot of people fail to mention in these tutorials. You have to have the power under the hood to make all the stuff work properly. Hopefully this comment will help anyone else that’s having the same problem.

      @@DustinBairdsolo ahhh great to know. Ive been wanting a sharper image for our livestream and I thought we just needed to look into trying to stream in 1080, but from this video, looks like we are stuck with 720 but we probably arent getting as sharp of a recording as we probably could be.

    Thank you so much for doing these videos. So helpful! I have one question. Our audio is coming from Logic Pro X which is then being sent to another computer running OBS. At 8:34 you start going over the audio settings. When you use the term “input source”, you’re referring to audio, correct? You’re saying that audio from a video source will most likely be 48khz. However, since my “input source” is from Logic, I can set this at either 44 or 48, correct? Thanks for the help. Much appreciated!

    Nice video! Just checking in to see what settings and suggestions you have. We tend to try to stream at higher framerates to keep the video smooth, but it definitely takes a bit beefier computer to handle it. Keep up the good work!

      As always, I recommend an i7 processor, 16GB of Ram, and using an NVIDIA graphics card that supports NVENC. Then you can encode video on your graphics card and that will free up your CPU for the DAW.

    Great Steven as always! I would like to see inyour future videos how to manage with internet in case of taking services to another venue (hotel, club, church) far away your headquarters, where the bandwidth can not be appropriate to a live streaming. Cheers!

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All the same principles would still apply. Know what your upload bandwidth is, and set your bit rate accordingly. Unfortunately when streaming you are at the mercy of your bandwidth. Might want to lower the resolution of your stream so a lower bandwidth will still look ok. Also, if any way possible avoid wifi and use an Ethernet connection. This would still apply no matter where you are: th-cam.com/video/-OyOBRhjYeo/w-d-xo.html

    • @BallastMedia

      You should create a scene for each of your different sources. So a scene for playback, with your media source, and a scene for Live Video with your video and audio input devices. Not sure about the upside down video though! ha

    Hi I just came across your channel by chance and found it very helpful so I have subbed....could you please help me with something..
    In this video you mention
    Output - recording - rate control - set to VBR
    And bitrate - set to high 30,000
    I am only recording so I took note of this part of the video. I am using a two canon 100d cameras and also an iPhone 8 Plus all as cameras plugged into an a let usb hub which is plugged into my MacBook Pro. For audio I have a Yamaha mg series mixer plugged into the usb hub and analog xlr mics plugged into the mixer. The recording itself is ok but it doesn’t look professionals nhs sometimes drops frames.
    My rate control however is set to CBR not VBR. And bitrate is set to 8000. Should I change to VBR and Chang’s bitrate to 30,000 for optimal finished results?

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Find out the bit rate your cameras are coming in at, no reason to go higher then that. Also, in obs if you go to the View menu and click Stats while you are recording, it will give you a good indication as to what is causing dropped frames.

    Short question. I own a Macbook Pro from 2018. I last connected my DSLR via USB and integrated it into OBS using a software solution. A USB mic is also connected to the Macbook Pro. When streaming, the Macbook Pro box has already reached its limits and the CPU load ensures that you can actually no longer use the computer to work in a program and stream a video tutorial, for example.
    The ATEM Mini Pro with built-in encoder could solve this problem for me. In any case, I understand it that way, when I connect all the hardware mentioned to the ATEM Mini Pro and also connect my Macbook Pro to the ATEM via HDMI, that I can stream directly from the ATEM Mini Pro and the entire CPU performance would no longer come to fruition yes the ATEM is working.
    How does it all work when I connect all my hardware to the ATEM Mini Pro and connect it to my Macbook Pro via USB-C and then stream from my Macbook Pro via OBS (source is then ATEM video and audio). Is the CPU utilization of my Macbook Pro even smaller than when I use the first scenario without ATEM? Have you been able to gain experience on this?

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Connecting the Mini to the MacBook would be the same as connecting the camera to the MacBook, each are seen as a video feed that the MacBook has to encode. Using the MacBook as a source in to the atem mini pro and streaming from it, sounds like the best way to go for you. (Short of purchasing a new computer that is up to the task)

    Your videos are awesome. I have learned so much. Quick question, my church bought the Canon Vixia R-82. They have a MacBook Pro A-1286 Quad Core i7 2.0Ghz, 16gig of ram. The only problem is that it has the older Thunderbolt (up to 10 Gbps), a Usb 2.0. Would the AJA U-TAP or Blackmagic device still work?

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You'd probably be best off going with the BMD Mini Recorder through your thunderbolt port. (The u-tap crops video to lower resolution if you connect it through usb2.) The Mini Recorder works with the Vixia R600/800 on it's HDMI input, so I'll go out on a limb to say it should work with the R82.

    Hi Steve, How are you Sir? I am having problem setting proper sound level for my live streaming. Sound is either too low or too loud. I have a stream mix coming out of my X32 to a Shure Mvi interface into OBS. I am unable to send a good sound level out. I would appreciate anything you can suggest.

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Have you installed the latest drivers for your graphics card from the AMD website? Also, there are a lot of known issues with Radeon graphics cards being used for encoding. Lots of bugs in the drivers that cause issues for encoding, it's not the best choice for encoding. In some instances you may be better off using your CPU!

    Question #1: If you just want to record going through the ATEM Mini Pro, will the ATEM Mini Pro Type C output be the same as the video streaming output set in the OBS settings? If I set my video record output in OBS settings to 1920x1080, will this same video frame size be true for the direct output from the ATEM mini pro going through the Type C output to an external SSD Hard Drive. Question #2: If I only want to record with OBS, will I need to disregard the streaming settings in OBS or do I have to set it to a certain setting?

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, if you are bringing in 1920x1080 from your Atem mini, then set your canvas to 1920x1080 and also use that for your recording resolution in the encoder. If you are only recording you don't need to set the streaming settings.

    Giving the general advice of setting the scaled resolution to 1280x720 *can* lead to difficulties on slow internet connections. If a connection can’t upload 6 Mbit or more, you’d have to send less data, which in turn makes your stream look worse, unless you choose a lower resolution to scale to. On 720p30, 4000 kbit is the lowest I could recommend. A bitrate lower than this will make the image quality suffer considerably, because in the end, the bitrate directly influences the image quality of a set resolution.
    That being said, depending on the purpose of a recording, I find 32 Mbit to be a bit of overkill on a resolution of 1080p30. Even a blu ray disk - tho technically possible- almost never outputs that bitrate. Most movies stored on that media have a bitrate of 18-25 Mbit. Unless you plan to edit the recording, 25 Mbit will most likely be more than enough. If you edit the recording 32 Mbit *might* give your recordings a bit more detail.

    My church has been streaming for 18 months during the pandemic. The last 8 months our stream has been terrible. Both FB and TH-cam have been buffering and dropping frames. The internet speed has been flaky at best. Our video is at 1280x720, my bitrate is at 2500 but it goes through a 3rd party to enable multi streaming to FB and TH-cam at the same time. If I increase the Bitrate to 4000 will that fix the buffering?

      I haven't done a whole lot of experimenting on a mac for encoding. I'd say give each a try and look at your CPU usage and see which one produces better results. Also look at the View menu and Stats to see if any frames are being dropped by the encoder.

    My question is if i can add 5 webcams for use with obs for facebook live at same time?

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Theoretically yes. The issues you will run in to are 1. If they are bus powered your usb controller may not be able to power all of them. (You can add an additional USB pcie card if you are using a desktop). 2nd issue may be the data bandwidth all the cameras will need again may exceed the capability of the USB controller.

    Having trouble getting audio connected using clean box pro. Can you explain exactly how to connect shotgun mic through clean box pro and into Mac? Not sure what cables are needed or settings.

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The clean box pro isn't an audio interface. You need a USB audio interface with pre-amps to get audio in to a computer. Something like the Focusrite 2i2 (amzn.to/2UQiF4w) , or the Behringer UM2. (amzn.to/3d6Yypb)

      The last time I had audio output issues was my fault and a quick fix. To the right of your audio meter, there's a gear icon. Press that. Click advanced audio properties. For my audio input, I accidentally set it to "monitor only", when it should have been set to "monitor and output".
      Maybe see if you made the same mistake I did?

    hey man, I have a super fast upload speed of 70-80mps. I am streaming at 1080p in Livestream Studio at their recommended setting (1920x1080 at 4680kps) and my stream is struggling to output at times. I am currently just doing playback from a media bin and the occasional remote guest. Is there a reason why my stream is struggling? it should be able to output 70 or 80,000 kps so i am a little lost. I know the rule of thumb is half your upload speed but even then i should be able to output 35,000kps. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I also occasionally run camera's in our venue which are 1080i (not sure FPS) and run lyrics from Pro Presenter from a 2019 Mac Mini. Any thoughts on bit rate and resolution for this setup? We have an NVIDIA Quadro KS5000 on an i7 PC with 24GB of RAM. Thanks a lot man

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      So, the 1/2 upload is a guideline for people with limited upload bandwidth, now as upload speeds are getting faster, it doesn't necessarily mean you up your bit rate to that. For a 1080p stream, I'd say 6000-8000 would be a good place to be if your connection can sustain it. But the next thing in line to sustain the bit rate is your computer doing the encoding. It sounds like your computer should be able to handle 1080p at 6000 ok though. If you are using OBS, go to the View menu and click Stats while you are streaming. This will give you an indication of where the issue is, if the encoder is dropping frames, your computer isn't keeping up, if your network is dropping frames, your connection isn't keeping up. You are using a hardwired ethernet connection right? And not a wifi connection?

    Hi Ballast Media. I have the lattes version of OBS (25.0.08). It does not give me the Nvenc option. My options are x264x, Apple VTH264 Hardware and Apple VTH264 Software. I have A MacBook Air laptop. Which option should I choose?

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd just do x264 if your CPU can support it. NVENC only shows up if you have an NVIDIA graphics card that supports NVENC encoding.
