Tash, my sister and family live in Queensland now, but my brother in law is a Kiwi, with one child born in Canada before they moved to Birkenhead NZ in 1985 - so both sons were raised there. They all moved to Queensland about 14 years ago - so I have had a fair exposure on my travels to people from both countries. I know my sister used to say the relationship between NZ and AU was like Canada and the US, but I think both countries are much closer in personality to Canada.
You might be right about the NFLDer's being like the guys from Queensland. What they have in common is a love for a laugh and having a good time, but that is inherent in all Canadians. NFLD'ers/Labradorians, with their Celtic roots, are also naturally musically talented, love to sing, play their instruments, and dance as well. When you get a group of them together to party, I think they might be closer to the Irish. (I say that with years of hanging out with Irish people as I did competitive Irish Dancing as a child, as did my children. I also did years of competitive Highland Dancing so hung out with a lot of Scottish born people as well.) I think all Canadians do agree on one thing - and that is that Newfoundlander's and Labradorian's are the kindest, most generous, thoughtful and friendly people in Canada. They are also the happiest. You can't help but fall in love with them. ❤ (For me, Canadians from PEI come next)

St. John's NFLD (with all the colourful houses ) is the oldest city in Canada, then St John NB - and then Quebec City. All are such pretty and historical cities and so different from each other. I also love Victoria, Montreal, Halifax, Toronto, Vancouver, and Charlottetown. However, St John New Brunswick is technically the oldest 'incorporated' city in Canada. (St. John's NFLD wasn't part of Canada until 1949) so that would be a good trick question on a Canadian trivia test. 😀

There was a guy in B.C. who trained the local Grizzly bears to guard his weed farm by giving them some to eat, well let's say the local cops weren't impressed!! You try telling a Grizzly your taking his stash. It was a remote area surprised they found it! We're from North Ontario, between the wife and I we've been to and lived in Ontario, Alberta and B.C. wife lived in the Northwest Territories ...briefly. visited a few others...more of a drive through, going from one place to another. Had a few party's and a few hiccups. The B. C. meanness I've never personally felt unless I was trying to rent a place ...it involves unfortunately my wife's culture and prejudice. Surrey, a small city in one part ( you can catch buses and train there from downtown Vancouver ) used to be mostly farm land and has been built up over the years and while we are friendly to immigrants we've experienced prejudice from THEM , shocked us. Called to look at a place and the guy didn't even bother to try to hide it he point blank asked my wife if she was Hindi? My wife went "No I'm Metis....click ..., Hello?" Try proving it in court. Never experienced mean there when either of us were younger , more homeless, rent through the roof, a lot of renovictions ( owner renos, says you can move back but ya can't have your dog or raised the rent) there's just to many factors Vancouver itself has changed we live in what would have been separate cities but because of transit you can now reach many of the more outlying areas that you would have at one point in time had to drive a few hours to or take a coach bus ( Greyhound ) now that bus line is defunct and these little cities all now connect up with city transit. Look up rents and contrast between Vancouver proper and where we live...which WAS farm land as well with a tiny downtown part of the TRI -CITIES area of Port Coquitlam ( Terry Fox hometown), Port Moody and Coquitlam. The housing prices skyrocketed with the Sky Train running out here now and the extension of bus lines. I just think Vancouverites easy going nature ( of our youth ) just started vanishing, we know we both lived here at different times in our life. Yes, they got mean and it's sad. Alberta don't fly the rainbow flag in some parts, we're not kidding about that Texas thing, up to and including Trumpists yes while you'll get some really nice and honest folk and some can be very friendly , they can also have ALL THOSE stereotypes as well and check yourself you can't even give them crap for it it's usually blunt like a hammer , so not like your blindsided by it. Quebec...GOD help you if you Canadian and you DON"T speak French!!!!! Trust me have cousins in old Quebec city their neighbour trained the Terrier they had to attack anyone who spoke English...I was the unlucky one Ontario boy who loves dogs found out not all dogs love me! As soon as I opened my mouth to say Hi to the little fellow he charged snapping and snarling. Good times!

Having lived in cities all across Canada, I would have to say that the ONLY city I would live in now would be Ottawa. It truly has 99% of what all of the cities that are larger than it is, has. Plus, being the Capital of the entire country, it has a lot of things those cities don't. Like National museums, the Parliament building, the Supreme Court of Canada. It is also pretty central smack dab between Montreal and Toronto. But here's the biggest thing for me, having all of that I have also found that the people living there are very friendly and approachable. So everything good about a city while leaving out most of the bad. It's clean, friendly, easy to get around and beautiful. Ottawa. It should be on your radar Tash.

The security guard had obviously been through that before as he had plastic cups(with lids)that he made us pour our drinks into. I was sitting at Paul Martin’s desk drinking a beer. The nephew and his wife waited 3 years to get the venue but it was worth it. It was one of the best weddings I’ve ever been too. Lots of other great places there to visit as well. Conservative politicians, particularly former PMs Mulrooney and Harper, made it a practice to try to play provinces and regions against each other. Like gossiping girls going "Hey, Sally, do you know what Martha did behind your back?" "Hey, Martha, do youknow what Sally did behind your back?" Mulrooney really played up tensions between Quebec and English Canada, so he could try to portray himself as the solver of the very "problems" he promoted. And Harper was big on playing west against east. And both played everyone against Toronto (a Liberal stronghold -- the Liberals in Canada being the left of centre party). It backfired on them for a period when western conservatives took things to heart and broke away as the separate "Reform" party, for a while splitting the conservative vote without the sort of coordination there is between Australia's Nationals and Liberals (Australia's main conservative party for those who don't know). Mulrooney also weakened his own strength in Quebec by encouraging people to split the vote there with the Bloc Quebecois (formed by a former member of his own Cabinet) with his divisive tactics. Of course both were more in love with the US than Canada.
Me? I love the country as a whole, excepting maybe Calgary. My more racist relatives moved there from Toronto, and it is overrun by American oil executives.

For many years there has been talk that North West Ontario should be part of Manitoba. We have far more in common and get more of our cultural influences there. I would say that the existence of Quebec, and the French Canadian history and communities throughout Canada is the biggest difference between Canada and Australia. Obviously we have our own unique history and culture, but in the broad strokes: We are both former British colonies, remain a part of the Commonwealth, and have a Parliamentary democracy; we both have a tragic history of wiping out indigenous communities which we continue to reconcile with today; and we both are nations of immigrants with a multicultural society.
However, Canada has the "two founding nations", French and English. This of course is insulting to the indigenous nations, but it does explain some distinctly Canadian events and culture. So, for example, there were 2 referendums on Quebec sovereignty, 1980 and 1995; Quebec utilizes the traditional French Civil Law justice system rather than the British Common Law which you would be familiar with; Canada has two official languages, etc.
One of the defining moments in Canadian history is the October Crisis of 1970 in which the War Measures Act is implemented to suppress separatist terror attacks by the FLQ. Here is a good brief documentary on this event which you may find interesting. th-cam.com/video/_ghCLj_n9Vo/w-d-xo.html, I think PM Pierre Trudeau's interview shortly before implementing the War Measures Act discussing how to deal with civil unrest and protect politicians from terrorism, is informative even now. This includes the famous quote, or infamous depending upon one's perspective, "Just watch me." th-cam.com/video/XfUq9b1XTa0/w-d-xo.html

Do all this before…you return to the city, where the “Townies” will show you a good time on George Street - the most PUBS than anywhere else - WORLD WIDE! Of course, you get “SCREECHED IN”, before “visiting” the various pubs. There’s plenty of HREAT food at these places…and there is a great SUSHI place in St. John’s you will like, as the fish is local, fresh, caught daily many times, and prepared before you by someone experienced under many masters! I think you will ENJOY this place!
P.S. We BBQ our PRAWNS (and everything else) in the winter - whether we have lots of snow or none! We BBQ all year ‘round! And our Prawns/Shrimp/Crab/Mussels/Oysters/Cod/Halibut, etc…the list is endless…as we have a phenomenal FISHERY What is Canada’s fishery worth? What is the profit that Canada makes on the commercial fishery each year how many billions does Canada export of its fishery each year is Canada’s fishery worth BILLIONS of dollars (excluding aquaculture products)…even my family land is now leased to an owner of a Fish/Seafood plant that produces both fresh and frozen products. I could take you to the plant, and Jim would happily “give” you as many prawns or whatever else they process there! It’s a GLORIOUS benefit of visiting Back Home, as well as, for my family/friends that live there!
One thing you will be overwhelmed by in Newfoundland is …they cannot offer or do enough for another person…stranger or friend! You will always have a friend in Newfoundland…you’re never bored nor alone…someone will always be there to lend a helping hand or simply have a kind conversation. I truly wish I could somehow bottle up the genuineness, charitability and willingness to help others, kindness, generosity, their infectious optimism, HOPE, JOY and COMPASSION…all that is recognizable in most every Newfoundlander - as witnessed during 9/11. If all that could be somehow encapsulated and distributed throughout the WORLD…our World and world view would be an extraordinarily better place, than it is currently! Oh to have a wish!🌟
Well, my friend, I will wish you, your family, and everyone here a beautiful day!
    Cheers🇨🇦☺🇦🇺
P.S. This is a wee tidbit that signifies the “acceptance” and welcoming nature of Newfoundlanders…it’s next to impossible to find an apartment or house to rent or buy, because they have all been given to UKRAINIANS! I suspect there will many new mixed relationships, families, and beautiful blended babies! Something BEAUTIFUL emerging from a tragedy! Newfies are not strangers to hard times…including with the devastating hurricane that hit the island last fall! The Western coastline got the brunt of it, and it will take YEARS to clean-up, restore, rebuild, and hopefully build stronger and innovative, so it’s more resilient - like Newfies themselves!❤xx

Hi, Aussie Tash: I'll just throw out some stuff and it may not be accurate but people can leave feedback. I live in Ontario and our accent is similar to California. The X-Files were filmed in Vancouver. Montreal/Quebec has food to die for and William Shatner is from there. I tried to swim at Cavendish Beach in PEI. I had to tiptoe through the jelly fish and when I got to knee-deep, I had to turn back because it felt like my legs were turning blue. I had to rush carefully back to shore through the jelly fish. My favourite place to live would be any city/town from North Bay, Ontario and up. I don't get out much so that is all I have to say.

It is sad that Canadians who live outside of Ontario have such a knee-jerk reaction to Ontario and Toronto in particular. Many of the negative reactions are from people who have never even visited the Province or Toronto. When the participants hear their Province mentioned they, rightfully, speak of the things they feel make their Province so wonderful. If Ontarians say anything positive about their Province they are accused of thinking they are the centre of the earth. More often than not what is taken as Torontonians bragging is actually some international organisation or publication recognising Toronto with another award or rating.
With 5,737 listings on IMDb, Toronto is the fourth most-filmed city, behind only Los Angeles, New York and London. Vancouver, with 4,110 listings, comes in fifth, while Montreal ranks 13th on the list. All Canadians should be proud of those standings.
In fact just last week, Preply, an online learning platform, named Toronto as the friendliest city in the world for tourists. Other organisations have also stated Toronto is the happiest city in the world and the best city in the world to live. Those nice things have been put forth by outsiders. Obviously, Torontonians are delighted with those designations, but, are loathed to repeat them lest people accuse us of being braggarts. It seems you just cannot win.
Canada is a spectacular country with stunningly beautiful geography, warm and interesting people and unlimited attractions, parks and activities. Having had the privilege of travelling extensively throughout our country (regrettably, so far I have not had the joy of visiting Nunavut and the Northwest Territories), I swell with pride whenever outsiders say positive things about Canada because I know them to be true. That is why it is so regrettable when I hear or read some Canadian bash any part of their own country. Chimo

    Canada 101
First Canada has two Official Languages. English and French. While most Provinces in Canada speak only English. Most People from Quebec speak French.
As far as being Bilingual (English and French) is concerned. That Varys from Province to Province with the highest concentration of bilingual people being in Quebec.
The Costal Provinces have there appeal just from being Costal. Which include New Brunswick, PEI, New Foundland. Nova Scotia and British Columbia.
The Eastern Provinces. All have an Irish or Scottish / English heritage. Nova Scotia actually means New Scotland in Latin.
British Columbia (the only Western Province) has a unique climate in Canada.
Quebec. You may not like it. Or you might. However, Montreal makes Quebec one of the most exciting places to visit in the World bar none. Whether you be a historian, foodie, or just a Tourist you will not be disappointed with Montreal. You might even have to go back again once you realize there is a whole city underground.
Ontario. By far the most populated Province in Canada. In fact more people reside in Ontario then the rest of Canada combined.
My home province so I not going to comment except to say is beautiful. Full of Heritage, full of Lakes, Provincial Parks. Definitely a travel destination which competes with Montreal.
I’ve been to Manitoba once. I don’t remember the exact joke. However, it was something to effect that a person ended up kicking there dog. The punch line being that they watched the dog run away for three days. Yes it is that flat. You can literally see further than you can see anywhere else in Canada.
Albertabama and Saskatchewan. Well I was taught if you haven’t got anything good to say. Or if you don’t want to say something good. You shouldn’t say anything at all.

Tash my dear. I have to correct your pronunciation of Québec. The English pronunciation is "Qweh-bec" (and the "eh" part is not pronounced like the letter A!). More properly is the French pronunciation "Kay-bec". As for Newfoundland, try these tips. Don't pronounce the "found". Say it more like"fun" or even "fin". The Land part can be pronounced "lind". So smashing it all together it's more like"Newfunlind" or "Newfinlind", but can also be pronounced "Newfunland" or "Newfinland" Just keep in mind that it sounds the best if you say it fast as well. Hope you like these tips on Provincial Pronunciation (2 Provinces anyway). Cheers from 🇨🇦.

    Saskatchewan’s national anthem
Faithfully sung across the province between 1 and 2 AM
    It’s a fact
    It’s on the Google
Go check it out. I’ll wait…..
    The Last Saskatchewan Pirate
    Lyrics by arrogant worms
I used to be a farmer, and I made a living fine
I had a little stretch of land along the CP line
But times were hard and though I tried, the money wasn't there
And the bankers came and took my land and told me "fair is fair"
I looked for every kind of job, the answer always no
"Hire you now?" they'd always laugh, "We just let twenty go!"
The government, the promised me a measly little sum
But I've got too much pride to end up just another bum.
Then I thought, who gives a damn if all the jobs are gone?
I'm gonna be a pirate on the river Saskatchewan!
    And it's a heave-ho, hi-ho, comin' down the plains
Stealin' wheat and barley and all the other grains
    It's a ho-hey, hi-hey farmers bar yer doors
When ya see the Jolly Roger on Regina's mighty shores
Well, you'd think the local farmers would know that I'm at large
But just the other day I found an unprotected barge
I snuck up right behind them and they were none the wiser,
I rammed their ship and sank it and I stole their fertilizer!
A bridge outside of Moose Jaw spans a mighty river
Farmers cross in so much fear their stomachs are a'quiver
Cause they know that Tractor Jack is hidin' in the bay
I'll jump the bridge and knock them cold and sail off with their hay!
    And it's a heave-ho, hi-ho, comin' down the plains
Stealin' wheat and barley and all the other grains
    It's a ho-hey, hi-hey farmers bar yer doors
When ya see the Jolly Roger on Regina's mighty shores
Well, Mountie Bob he chased me, he was always at my throat
He followed on the shoreline cause he didn't own a boat
But cutbacks were a'coming and the Mountie lost his job
So now he's sailing with us, and we call him Salty Bob!
A swingin' sword, a skull and bones and pleasant company
I never pay my income tax and screw the GST (Screw it!)
Sailin' down to Saskatoon, the terror of the seas
If you wanna reach the co-op, boy, you gotta get by me!
    'Cause it's a heave-ho, hi-ho, comin' down the plains
Stealin' wheat and barley and all the other grains
    It's a ho-hey, hi-hey farmers bar yer doors
When ya see the Jolly Roger on Regina's mighty shores
Well, pirate life's appealing but you just don't find it here
I hear in North Alberta there's a band of buccaneers
They roam the Athabaska from Smith to Fort McKay
And you're gonna lose your Stetson if you have to pass their way!
Well, winter is a'comin' and a chill is in the breeze
My Pirate days are over once the river starts to freeze
I'll be back in springtime but now I have to go
I hear there's lots of plunderin' down in New Mexico!
    'Cause it's a heave-ho, hi-ho, comin' down the plains
Stealin' wheat and barley and all the other grains
    It's a ho-hey, hi-hey farmers bar yer doors
When ya see the Jolly Roger on Regina's mighty shores
    It's a heave-ho, hi-ho, comin' down the plains
Stealin' wheat and barley and all the other grains
