I would have to add to the definition of “Not fit” . It has a far greater range than the weather. It an be used ironically “Buddy told me about that place , said it’s not fit ! Best food in town ! “ it can answer a range of questions. “ How was your day ? “Not fit me son ! Boss was ragging on me all day. “ going swimming but the water is to cold. “B’ys the waters not fit. “ someone tells a dirty joke “Sure you’re not fit ! “ . So many places to use not fit that it’s not fit !
The Newfoundlanders have been the butt of jokes in Canada for a long time, but as a Western Canadian, I love the rich vocabulary they add to our tapestry of Canada. Just as the French, First Nations, and the Chinese have. All the other groups will broaden it more in the future. Canada will be a truly amazing place in a few decades.
It’s true Newfies can tell what town a person is from by certain sayings & accents. My hubby is Newfie. It’s so funny when you get a few of them together! (Not in Newfoundland)By now I understand most of what they say, but not all! Hubby says “ if all newfies went home, we’d sink the Rock” lol 💜 from Winnipeg
i was watching a tiktok this morning of a newfoundlander on an irish radio show theres people saying theyve lived in newfoundland their entire life and couldnt understand a word buddy said i could because only beinghere a year i cant really tell any part of newfoundlander speak so i just guess and its close enonugh. if you lieten to people from across the island its like the UK where every corner of the island has a different accent like london manchester birmingham oxford ect are all different. i assume its the same down under too the best kind my neighbour says about everything like he asked me to keep an eye on his place while hes out of town for work i said sure he replied with the best kind, i bounced an idea of how to make my golfcart last the 1,696km charity ride trip crossing the island twice he replied with the best kind a time ive also heard i was explaining my trip to someone and he said have a time. ive actually used chummy but my dumb ass had a stutter and said chubby🤦♂🤦♂ not fit basically not fit for humans like in the winter i drove my golfcart to the take out place to get dinner i walk in the owner says "christ by wadya doing she not fit out there" that one at first i needed him to repeat to process in my stroked out mainlander head
A friend of mine from NFLD says chummy all the time but refers to it as a friend. Thinking maybe the same word has different meaning in different places
Each community does have a unique dialect its pretty great. Theres a bit of irish, french and british mixed in the newfie accent. Many of the indigenous people from Newfoundland and Labrador spoke french, some still do. Also, did you know, Newfoundland was once part of Great Britain. We have only been a province of Canada since 1949. 😊
"How ya' getting on? Best kind" Best kind can be positive for anything. "A time" means a good time. "Chummy" is what you call something when you can't remember the name. "Not Fit" means no good. "What's Jimmy like, he's not fit".

I’m from the big old rock of Newfie land. Me fav newfie slang phase is “Knocked Up”in da morning. It means what time u getting up the morning
As like in Australia, Newfoundland likes to shorten things or leave out words. The saying is " not fit for man nor beast" but they just say " not fit"
Hi Tashe, check out the lyrics to I'se the b'y (Great Big Sea)
Will do 😀😃
"Lord knows he can playz'r by the way he's gotta hold-on"! - There's one for ya to decipher.
Give it ur best..den I'll be flappin'
The book she's talking about is the Dictionary of Newfoundland English. You can find it online.
Newfoundlander here - We drop the word "the" and just say Best Kind! For example; What's buddy like over there? Answer - Best Kind!
Yeah it's definitely just Best Kind,
How's ya getting on me son?
Best kind buddy!!!
I literally came to the comments to say this. You’d never say “the”, you’d just say something was best kind. Ex: this video was best kind.

Canada will be great again after we toss out Trudeau.

If you saw the musical come from away, they tell you in the first song that you will only understand about a half of what they say .

Regarding tools, "Chummy" isn't just a tool. It means, the "correct" tool.
In Ontario that would be a Thingamagig.
"Who Knit you" can also be used when someone does something silly or stupid you would say to them "Who Knit you?"
I've always wanted to go to the East coast. Looks like I need to do some studying first lol. 🤔🤨😁🥰
I dies at you! - Dying laughing! - 💀🤣
We calls the crowd from St. John's, townies because they have their own particular dialect lol
There's also some Scottish and French in the mix, but I hear that the accent varies depending on what corner of Newfoundland you visit.
True but it's mostly English and Irish.
A friend of mine from NFLD says chummy all the time but refers to it as a friend. Thinking maybe the same word has different meaning in different places
Yes you have to be brought up in Newfoundland to know these words
By "Irish" language, that lady is referring to the dialect of Gaelic that was the native language of Irish people before England colonized it.

"How ya' getting on? Best kind"
Best kind can be positive for anything.
"A time" means a good time.
"Chummy" is what you call something when you can't remember the name.
"Not Fit" means no good. "What's Jimmy like, he's not fit".
I’m just thankful they provided closed captioning.
Sleveen must equate to ‘sloven’ in English.
Pass me da chummy!!! 😂
What's the weather like? Not fit b'ye.
Its not fit here, freezing 12c
@@aussietashreacts yes by 19C here today. Summer is coming. Yah
I can understand Newfoundlanders...the Gaelic Irish ladies speaking are a different story altogether
A "good hand" is someone talented at something.
A "queer hand" is someone strange, a bit off, funnny.
Gut founderd means starved to death. 😂
i speak newfanese
I'm Gut Founded = I'm starved.
Gutfoundered, not gutfounded.
shes close but not quite right
Nah we dont say THE best kind, we say either, best kind or dass best kind!
My take on NFL...I will never visit there again! ps am married to a newf.
It's not "New-Finland"...it's "Noofin-land".
It's only spoken by "Noofin-landers" who aren't ashamed of their heritage and trying to be "proper".
