- Come along as we harvest our 2023 oat crop with 1970's farm equipment! This is harvesting the old-fashioned way on our family farm, a little bit slow, but using equipment that still works and is long paid for. #familyfarm, #oats, #harvest, #johndeere, #versatile,
I'm lovin' it.... if there's quite a bit of grass in the oat straw, I'd feed it out and let the cows separate the feed from the bedding... Thanks Dave.
That’s a good idea. We round baled that straw.
Sure can't complain about 60 BPA on a year like this!
We’re happy to have a good yield of something after this weak hay year. Now need to sell it.
Love the older machinery!
Same stuff I used in high school. It works better than I do🙄.
Nothing wrong with the yield with a year like this. I hope you received some rain.
We finally got a half inch…just after seeding cover crop winter rye. Pastures are still brown though….
Good morning Dave ☕☕☕
Doesn't look too bad. Believe it or not, it's raining here today 😳 as of 9am, we've got 1/4" for the month... Almost all since 6am..
Versatile made good equipment!
Smallest 4 digit number JD combine around here was 6600.. most were 7700. Before that, the 95 was it..
I hauled silage off a field that had a 44 parked in the corner. Such a cute little thing!!! The seat is wider than the cylinder.
Get it done before the rain!!!
Congrats on the rain, Ed. 6600 is a good combine and would work for us but this 4400 was cheap and very well cared for…my previous combine (an early model 4400) was in terrible shape when I bought it. Live and learn.
@@Rollinghillsfarmsmn almost an inch of rain 😁
60 bushels is a good yield. Always enjoyed swathing. Most farmers liked a rain on the straw before baling to keep the dust down.
Thank you Dave.
We’re letting some straw sit through the weekend to bleach out the grass. Hope to square bale next week. Maybe we’ll let it sit through Tuesdays rain.
Well, it might be 70's equipment, but it seemed to be working pretty well. Nice harvest!
Thanks Charlie. We had a clean harvest with no serious breakdown, although 15 acres isn’t much of a test. That swather needs to come into the shop this winter for steering rehab. Has some serious leaks…
Nice combining Dave. Pretty decent oats for a year like this.
Thanks Will. I love running that little combine. Wish I had the AC working this year🥵.
Awesome video, any second cut hay to make?
We have two fields of alfalfa that grew tall enough and one field of grass. Maybe 10 round bales and 50 squares…
What’s nicer straw - barley or oats?
Definitely the oats. Taller and more yellow. I found the barley to be more pale and fine so that a few weeds or grass make the bales dark looking. We round baled the barley. It will make great bedding for the cows while the oat straw will be sold as small squares.
