  • Barley is ready to harvest in Northern Minnesota and we're taking our classic John Deere 4400 combine into the field. Harvest for us happens with 1970's equipment that still works great for a small family farm. Come along with us as we begin our 2023 grain harvest. #familyfarm, #johndeere, #johndeerecombine, #barley, #versatile,

Thanks for the kind words. We hope to inspire people with our experience and maybe help them solve a problem. In return we pick up new ideas.

Your doing it the only way it can be done this far north...We get about one in ten years you could cut and combine in one shot....You've got it mastered Dave.... Thanks.....

Brent: Thanks so much for the kind words. I’d never describe our process as ‘mastered’ 😊 but I agree with your one in ten. The old farmers who mentored me told me to ignore what I learned in southern MN and pay attention to Lake Superior’s moods…something you understand very well.

Thanks. Don’t know how I’d get it all done without help. Takes me a field to remember how everything works each year. Hoping to work a little faster this weekend.

Nice job Dave. It's looking good. The times I did barley it cleaned really well.

Thanks. If the other fields yield this strong we'll have oats to sell.

Looks like the straw and grain did alright, considering the dry conditions. I'm guessing that was the 656 you had mentioned, it looks nice.

That’s it. It’s a solid tractor with low hours. I’m very impressed with its versatility. I think the grain was helped by the lack of May/June rain which kept the weeds down, reducing competition.

How was the test weight with the drought? Time to get that straw baled!

Haven’t tested yet but oats seem a little low, maybe 33? I’ll test weight and moisture in the next fields when we haul surplus to the elevator. Straw was round baled…we’ll make upcoming fields into small squares. Sells for $7.00 around here.

With or without fertilizer? Your yields I mean

Zero commercial fertilizer but this field gets extra manure application because it’s close to the barn and easy to haul. The manure comes from winter bedding pack for beef cattle- -mixed up with hay and stockpiled to compost and kill some of the weed seeds.

Ok that makes sense. I don’t have the ability to fertilize naturally like that but our land is all busted up pasture land se we should be good for a year or two
