  • How do you pick up an IFR clearance when you're on the ground at a non-towered airport? There are three ways, and we'll walk you through each one in this video.

    I’m close to finishing my IFR and my home base is a non towered rural airport. Your explanation/video is fantastic. We typically can’t pick up center from the ground but can do it shortly after getting off the ground. My CFII typically has me get airborne and then activate the IFR. We’ve done this a few times with MVFR wx. I wasn’t a big fan of it. The task saturation is heavy on departure without having to do CRAFT while flying... but honestly I think that’s why he’s making me do it this way... to see what my saturation limit is.
    Excellent video!!!

    a huge part of this, if you are inbound and 10 miles out straight in when severe clear, cancel your IFR so they can release the guy waiting for you.

    Cobra 646 hit the nail on the head. When I flew for Delta, we would always cancel IFR on VFR days when flying into such airports, and it was legal for us. It's a huge help for those on the ground !

    Greetings Boldmethods,
    Great article and video! I just have a couple of questions, I know that there are several IFR departure procedures including ODP, SID, Climb via, radar departure..etc
    1. The ifr clearance/CRAFT mentioned including the craft at a non controlled airport, is the CRAFT part of the odp, Sid, or other ifr departure procedures? Or is it simply just a clearance or a “permission” from act to get into the skys from ATC.
    2. Let’s just say I’m at a major busy controlled airport KLAX for example, and I’m using the SID or ODP for my departure, will I need to copy down the a whole bunch of stuff from ATC for the CRAFT as well for my clearance or “permission” to get into the skies from ATC? I assume flying the airlines have a much more easier way like just inputing down all the information in the flight computer system right? And only for general aviation like if I’m flying Cessna 172 part 91 where I have to write down all the bunch of stuff for the CRAFT info? Thank you! Meaning do I need to get an IFR clearance from either a controlled airport and a non-control airport as well?
    3. I have heard from different sources including flight insight about the number of flight IFR departure procedures, I’m not sure if this is correct but I will just name the ones that I know below, Please correct me if there any mistakes or any overlaps, thank you.
    IFR departure procedures
    1. SID (3 kinds of SIDs including 1. Pilot-nav SIDs 2. Radar Vector SIDs 3. Hybrid SIDs)
    2. OPD
    3. CLIMB VIA…SID or ODP
    4. Visual Climb over airport, (Not sure if it is the same as number three Climb via…)
    5. Vectors Dep
    6. Diverse Dep
    7. Radar Dep
    Sorry about the long post but thank you so much for your help!

    Quick question - so if there is a number of commercial airliners being held (at a non-towered airport) and you (not a commercial) need to depart right away (by leaving VFR and getting IFR at min altitude) - how do you insert yourself into the mix?

    Question....just talking C-182T....if the wx is solid IFR (we will assume above TO and ARR mins)...what rule or how do I depart and then pick up clr? Wouldnt I need an IFR clr to TO? I understand in this vid you TO under VFR, I get that....Are there printed somewhere "procedures" for IFR TO without clr? I dont think so.. I working on my IFR now.
    Thanks...you guys rock the free world! You should franchise and set up flt schools all over.

      This is where an ODP can be helpful, however, this is only relative to uncontrolled airspace. ODP’s are designed to be flown without an IFR clearance, and you’re responsible for terrain avoidance in uncontrolled airspace, which is typically why an ODP is published at non-towered airports with no SID. You must have an IFR clearance to enter controlled airspace in IMC. Or, in some parts of the country there is what’s called a diverse departure procedure - this can be done only if it’s not explicitly prohibited, if there’s at least one instrument approach to the airport of departure, no ODP is present and no SID has been published for that airport. If you want more info as to what a Diverse Departure Procedure is look it up, tons of info online about them. So bottom line, if you’re taking off into IMC you can do so without an IFR clearance so long as you remain in class G airspace (not advisable, but legally under Part 91, you can do it). If you intend on flying into the overlying Class E airspace (controlled), yes, you must have the IFR clearance to do so.

      In most cases in the US, no. They need to be IFR.

    • @breddi1
      @breddi1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No. There’s a reason why big iron commercial accidents are as rare as hens teeth. This is one of them. IFR routing and traffic separation every second while airborne.

    • @brianparkman8183
      @brianparkman8183 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure they can. But the 'big boys' all fly above 18k feet where they don't burn as much fuel and it's required to be on an IFR flight plan.
