I went to fashion school for 2 years, not my best experience I always kept thinking about how much money my parents used on it, they were always struggling and in the end, I would end up feeling guilt and I lost my passion for it. Since I don't want to give up on my dream, I decided, for now, am gonna do some self-study from sources online, sure it won't be the best way unlike when you are in school but it's a good way to go if you are a bigginer and not financially stable. You can always seek advice from other designers from your area or even online. But anyway, I really loved hearing about your experiences and your advice. You are a true inspiration, Kiana.😘😘
I can relate, I'm in fashion school right now and honestly I'm just finishing up this degree so that my parents do not feel like they wasted their money. I flourish in creative design than garment construction, I think school doesn't equate to the amount of time, money spent on it.
I’m self teaching my self now. Got 3 kids all under 9 I’m also homeschooling but studying creating patterns and tracing off my own clothes plus my kids at night. It’s fun and I can’t wait to be an expert Praying for your success!!!

Im 23 years old and never been to college. I like taking the self taught route for almost anything. C'mon its 2021 , you can find a course for anything! You have channels like this where the youtuber is college educated giving you the professionalism you need to succeed in fashion. I just started getting into fashion more seriously after coming to a realization that I really love it! You watch videos like these, you practice, and yalll we gonna be pros in 10 years ! Sewing and designing is tedious work but the end product feels sooooooo damn good!
I studied architecture and was always really passionate about fashion design its amazing how similar the design process is! I lean on the same design process as I develop my own designs and work on my technical sewing skills.
Hi Kiana! ☺️ For those students who are thinking about pursuing a self taught path, what would you recommend them to get noticed? How could they get taken seriously compared to those who have fashion college experience?
I have always dreamed about going to fashion school, but I've already finished my Bachelor's degree in Biology and am currently in uni again for my B.Ed. I always wonder if I am taking the wrong path and will regret not choosing to study fashion, but maybe I will go back one day! I've tried teaching myself but I feel like that only goes so far and takes forever.
im currently in a similar position except i dont have a degree. out of everything on the entire planet, this wld be the only degree I'd really feel like pursuing
I'm in my third year in fashion college. I'm honestly not learning much. It's so difficult to learn techniques when the classes are so half-assed because they're all done online. We have very little interaction with our professors because of this pandemic. Where I'm from, the schools are still closed :(( Honestly your channel has helped me a lot in finishing my finals for this term and watching your videos inspired me to continue this program. 🥹 I’m being honest… I’m crying watching this video… is my dream to work only with fashion/sewing… I have being sewing for 7 years. I can sew anything. But in Norway if you don’t have the “paper certificate” that you have study, you can’t get a job😢 guess what? I’m scared to death to start school at my age (42)… and manage the mother life at the same time🥹
fuck it… just start, you’ll most likely end up regretting it if you don’t but if it’s too much to handle since you’re also a mother that’s also understandable
what about fashion design business or to became toilers because I'm learning my self from the TH-cam how to sow and more. I think going fashion school or college it will help to understand where to connect for your design or how to do the business
hi i’m going to enter high school next year!! it’s like this video was made for me! I’m obsessed with sewing and all the aspects of fashion but this is the time where everyone wants to know ur future plan and what u want to be when u grow up and future careers and everyone has a structured plan for their future, but i have no idea on what i want. i tell my parents and everyone that asks, that i want to be a fashion designer and go to fashion school. They simply tell me that it’s a fantasy and i won’t be able to make a living or get a “real job” out of that study
It's 2021 and is the age of opportunity to me. There's so many ways you can go about making a living with fashion. Like I know someone who has a pattern fashion business. Designers make custom orders for big events like weddings! I would suggest learning the business side of things too! But also realize that people who aren't into your passion aren't always gonna understand. Its not there thing !
Omg right on time! I’m kinda still debating on if I should go to NC State. I’m scared that if I do a fashion major I won’t make good money in the future. I want to work for vogue.
Something you didn’t mention that I think is important is that fashion programs typically don’t teach how to make garments for plus sizes. As a result, people are going out and making clothing lines that are not inclusive
YES!! its honestly a complete failure of any fashion school if they ignore plus sizes. Obviously the issue is much bigger than just the schools, its systemic fatphobia- but it would at least help a little if the designers were taught about plus size paterns etc (and the lack of inclusivity in the industry).
Currently I am a fashion student and I passed 1st semester with 4cgpa, in 1st semester, I was offered with intro to textile also and I pretty enjoyed the textile things overall more than fashion and now I am very confused either should I go with fashion or textile.
Rn I’m in a fashion program at my local university and I wanna gain more experience like how do you find local events I can attend and be involved in, btw love video couldn’t agree more🙏🏼
Thank you so much for the great information. But i would be happy if you share some information about how.hard it is to find a job on this program and its salary.
yeah so it really depends on your class and projects and how much you want to spend! I know students who would spend tons of money and order expensive fabric from mood for every project… and I know students who barely paid anything bc they thrifted all their fabric from table cloths at good will. I’m a big planner so I always have a lot of muslin on hand to prototype - so I don’t make many (if any) mistakes using my final fabric. Per project I’d probably only spend around $30?? I used a lot of money when making collections on my own time- but I was always smart about finding the cheapest places to buy fabric
I’m majoring in biomedical engineering and I’ve always been really drawn to fashion and making my own clothes. My grandmother is a seamstress and she bought me my first sewing machine around 11 years old so I’ve been seeing since. I’m finally getting out of the hole of making dresses and skirts and I’m learning how to make pants. I’d really love to make my own patterns so I’ve been experimenting with that, but I have so much trouble with taking designs out of my head, putting them on paper, and making patterns for them. Let alone knowing if the design is actually going to look good and if it’s worth my time. I struggle a lot with that partially because I have really bad body dismorphia, but most of the clothes I make I end up giving to my sister because I feel like they work better for her body than mine. Do you have any advice on knowing if a design is worth while and taking that design and developing a pattern for it?
Im at 11 th class so aftr graduatin from school ..is it a best option for me to join fashion design course cause i have interest in it and also i have studied hand embroidery.. Which country can i study it in a affordable fees?
In my country we don’t have majors like fashion school but I wanna make my own clothes and open a small business where can I learn to sew clothes and learn what are the best products to buy for making clothes ?
Do you think any designer really needs an entrepreneur certificate/degree etc by itself? For being a freelance designer? They didn’t teach it at textile college.
Could I go for my art degree and still be a fashion designer? I crochet and make clothing by sewing I was just wondering what would be the best option for me
I wanna know can i do part time job while I attending fashion school ?Is there time to anothet work .I really confuse what to do .Now,I attending hotel management with not my own decision.
I went to fidm and it was very discouraging. Not all of the teachers were supportive and were pretty b*****. I didn’t feel encouraged or inspired at all.
As for me I also master the industrial sewing machine but really it’s expensive and my sewing machine has a lot more programs like button hole zig zag stitch embroidery stitch but an industrial one only has one program most of the time so not worth the money in my opinion, maybe if you use heavy fabric that is hard to use on a familial one it’s worth it but otherwise I really like my familial sewing machine !
