    I completely agree. Before entering university, I thought I could study something else and learn the fashion design part by my self. But now that I am studying it, I can't imagine learning all of this without the tools the uni gives me. They teach method, techniques and help you find partnerships for your future career. You only fail if you don't work enough to make it into the fashion world

    Well helmut Lang kinda learned how to sew, not fashion design. He wanted to create clothes that he couldnt find. Let us all remember that sometimes, luck, connections and money play in the mix.
    Plus remember, LeeMcQueen was a tailor in Saville Row but because an influencer named Isabella Blow got him into the scene!!! Take fashion design if you want.
    Karl Lagerfeld was a fashion illustrator!!! Plus he came from money!!!!!! So please let us not blinf ourselves!!!

    I'm a fashion design student in Paris and I totally agree with you. Past the fact that you'll learn how to sew and maybe draw, going to design school is a way to nurture your creativity and, depending on schools, learn new ways to create(through new technologies). When I first planned on applying to fashion design school many people told me that "I could still work in fashion w/out a fashion degree" but as far as I am in my education, I'm glad I didn't listen to them. I've learn some things my passion only couldn't have taught me, things I couldn't have learn by myself WHILE studying another degree. Lastly, fashion school is a good way to build your portfolio with the help of professionals and create your relationships in the industry.

    I studied visual communication and photography before going to university. I'm now studying BA Fashion Communication with Business Studies and looking to do my MA in Fashion Communication next year. The more/deeper I've been studying fashion the more I find myself wanting to design however when making that choice when I was younger, I was always naturally drawn to Image Making more. I don't regret my decision because I really love what I do, however I think when you're naturally creative you always want to jump straight into the next thing. Especially after interning at Burberry last year for the Fabric and Trims development team it's really opened my eyes to what more I could do however I don't think everyone is naturally cut out to be a designer and we need people within the other creative aspects of the industry. It's just as important

    Everything you said is right and I totally agree, I'm currently 21 but I started my journey in Fashion when I was 17, sketching and illustration I'm self taught but when it came to the technicalities of garment construction I had to learn from someone else and luckily I apprenticed with a tailor with over 31 years of experience and internship really helped me also because you get to see the process of garment making as a business and not as a class project.
    Also like you said "master your craft" I'm currently taking classes for pattern drafting which is of great help when designing.

    In my opinion you need to study fashion design. Because without those angry teachers puting deadlines for every single project and shouting at you everyday to motivate you. You will never open your mind by yourself to see to search and to think to express..
    Its not about sewing or pattern making as much as it about how to think and creat a brand standing for specific clients type.
    Being a fashion designer means having your own point of view..
    And your point of view must be unique enough because nobody need another galliano theres already one..
    Without being in one of the top ten schools in the world its hard to reach thst level of thinking.
    Good luck dude

      i think thats somewhat true but developing a perspective is not taught many people study fashion and get put under other people because they don't have a strong vision. I believe , its your duty to develop your own perspective cause uni doesn't teach you that.

    • @bca-2257
      @bca-2257 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I agree with De Prince Living My Passions. If developing a perspective was taught then everyone who studied fashion design at the best schools would more or less 'make it', but that is far from the case... There's also advantages to coming to the industry from another background, so long as you invest time to learn the basics. Uniqueness isn't something that's lab-grown, but the right environment can nourish what's already there.

    I really enjoyed this video. I myself study fashion journalism and I feel that formally studying the subject has helped me tremendously. You can learn many things on your own, but sometimes getting an education in something helps you to learn about the subject in a multi-faceted way. I have taken classes in fashion public relations, forecasting, and marketing during my studies. I feel these classes give me tools and different perspectives that allow me to write more knowledgeably on the subject. Fashion is such a broad field that it can be tricky knowing where to guide your attention as you build your knowledge and skillset if you don't take classes in the subject. Of course, formal education in a subject isn't a guarantee or always necessary, but it helps to take away some of the guesswork. Educational costs can be an issue, unfortunately. It is hard to find schools that have some of the other areas of fashion studies and it can be very expensive to do so.

    Virgil Abloh himself said that the type of designer he wanted to take his place was the type that didn’t have fashion school background. There’s a reason for that. Fashion school can mold designers into a box. He wanted someone who can think and design outside of that box. So for anyone who can’t afford fashion school, don’t let the comments discourage you. Being taught by the best of the best designers does not guarantee you to be the a great designer yourself. Just food for thought

    It depends on what you want from the industry. If you ask me, creativity for the most part comes naturally. If you want to make it to the very top then I completely agree in that those who study fashion design have a huge advantage. Passion and authenticity are key and if you can get that strong message to an audience willing to support you (that in itself being a key skill) then that can only stand you in good stead.

    • @FashionRoadman

      @@FashionRoadman Exactly, there are designers such as Raf or Helmut that didn't study fashion design but was able to acquire their knowledge and skill set in apparel. Another issue is that there're so many people trying to pursue in design nowadays and all want to have their own brands, a previous instructor of mine used to say "not everyone can do design." I find it extremely accurate because one not only needs construction knowledge but also consistency and a strong sense of aesthetics to create a cohesive collection. Many think that designing is just drawing random stuff but it's not, there's so much more to process of development.

    Tom Ford studied architecture at Parsons which upon first thought seemed to have nothing to do with fashion design, he even misrepresented himself a little when applying for an internship at Chloe I think, without informing the interviewer that he studied a different program. He went into the business with zero knowledge of sewing or pattern-making. However, he was a genius, and the truth is, his architectural background technically got him off to a good start. It's a similar design system which prepared him with the essential learning skills. Most importantly, the artistic progress that is called Critical Thinking - something that any top art academy program nowadays drills into you during your study. I agree with this sentiment. I think that the benefit of going to school is that school (itself) serves as an incubator. a lot of what one will have to do outside of school (i.e. networking) will be laid out for you. also, instead of shooting in the dark to find your interest- there lessons that serve as points of departure for students as they inform themselves on the field, as well as find their interest. a potential con in going to school is that there is (sometimes) a laser focus on how to succeed commercially- oppose to creatively.
    what are you all's thoughts?

    As a fashion student I feel like it's not absolutely necessary to study design but it is nigh on impossible to get all the best information and education about the topic that you do need to design and create clothes without either doing a degree in it, or in some other institution I guess, basically I don't think that someone could just sit at home, do research on the internet and whatever else, with no instruction from an actual educator, tutor or some kind of mentor and become a designer

    • @FashionRoadman
      @FashionRoadman  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Studying FD obviously makes a strong base n boosts creativity process faster. But at the same time no one learnt FD at specific school. Art is free n not a must to have background in that field. That's how unique designs come on table.

      You’re 100% right and that’s why I’m not studying fashion design. Maybe you didn’t get the point of this video because I didn’t make my point Well. I was basically saying that if people aren’t going to study fashion design they need to intern or work as an apprentice. Either way they need to be working on their craft.
      People thinking they’re the next Rei Kawakubo with no formal training has led to this rise of tasteless instagram brands

  • @whossahar2070

    In this age of e-commerce labels and collaborations would you still consider a fashion design degree necessary. Would you consider the creative directors of such brands "designers".

    • @FashionRoadman
      @FashionRoadman  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It’s not necessary but if one doesn’t study a degree you have to put the kind of work in that the likes of Rei Kawakubo and Raf Simons did. Can’t just stay at home watching TH-cam videos on how to design and expect to become a great designer.
      The other option is being a sell out like Virgil abloh and using hype and exploitation to push your way to the top but that way means you’ll never truly be respected

      If you want to have a brand it depends what side you want to have control over. If you want creative control it’s best you study design. If you want business control it’s best to study things like accounting, business management etc. If you want to be in control of the marketing / PR side it’s best to study media, marketing, personal relations or communications.
      There are a lot of aspects to running a successful fashion brand so it really depends

      @@mercyobasohan5975 Whatever you are doing modelling doesn't require the training of anything else, it's more a genetic lottery so I wouldn't focus too much on that. Luckily we are in the internet age where there is a youtube tutorial on every single fashion design technique so I'd say definitely try some stuff out first and see if you like designing enough to consider it as a career because it's tough.
      Also, in terms of finding your personal style, just learn about more brands and explore more styles, niches and brands and eventually you'll find what you like the most. Style is also always evolving so you'll never have one style for the rest of your life.

I am torn between that and Psychology for which I am holding a degree place at uni. I am not a confident person I always think I am not creative enough, definitely not as radical as a lot of art students. Would you say fashion also really requires natural talent? I am also worried that I won't be able to get into CSM as it is really competitive. If you were me what would you do? Any suggestion?
