    Hey friends :) Today I'm sitting down to talk to you about an important subject: choosing your major and college! I struggled for years trying to figure out what I should major in and what career path I wanted, so I hope this video helps if you're struggling too. Throughout this video, I will be sharing why I decided to follow my dreams and how I decided to do that without risking everything. Hope that my experience can inspire you to follow your dreams too :)
    Love you all!
    ~Kiana

    It’s absolutely mind-boggling to me that high schools expect basically kids to choose a career path that they’re supposedly going to do for the rest of their lives. There are of course HS students who have grown up a little too fast and are far more mature than their peers, but the average student has been sheltered in this HS bubble. I thought, because I was a good student, I HAD to go to college. I hated every second and dropped out. I joined the military (not for everyone obviously) and, honestly, it was the best decision I could have made. It pulled me out of what I now realize was a seriously closed off cultural bubble. Everyone at my school was Hispanic and so was my whole community. You don’t have to go to college. My sister went and we were super proud of her graduating, but she’s not even using her degree. Venture out of your city, especially if it’s a small town with next to no diversity. Don’t get stuck in the college trap just because you’re pressured by others. “Follow your dream” sounds cheesy af, but if you go in knowing there’s a chance you could “fail” or even just decide it’s not for you, then you’ll be better off.

      Wow thank you for sharing your story!! I'm very glad to hear that you figured out the right thing for you and joined the military, even if it wasn't right away. It's so true that nowadays people are just expected to attend college when in reality there are so many other options.

      I’m in grade 11 rn and I’m super stressed about picking a career. I figure I might go for another year of high school for some classes that I have missed out on because online school hasn’t offered some of the classes that I wanted. So I’ll have more time possibly but I am worried cause I feel like everyone else has a plan but me.

    hi i’m a senior fashion merchandising student, i changed my major 4 times before deciding on this. I AM SO GLAD I DID!! i was worried it wouldn’t be “safe” and that it wasn’t respectable. but no - EVERYONE in our society wears clothes! clothes are essential in our society. There are so many career options in fashion - designers, buyers, allocators, sourcing, forecasters, PR, e-commerce, etc etc!!! I learn so much about business and consumer behavior and graphic design in my classes, it’s not just clothes

  • @jadakredo3679
    @jadakredo3679 3 ปีที่แล้ว +47

    I also love how you emphasized the whole society/culture pressures and how fashion is seen as “lesser than” other majors. Honestly I was and am in the same boat about not being taken seriously. I think a lot of people need to hear that! :))

    • @HB-wy5rt
      @HB-wy5rt 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      i’m a senior fashion merch student and i felt the SAME WAY for a long time! but what changed me, is when my teacher said “look around at the people you see today, what do they all have in common? clothes. everyone wears clothes”, and it’s true - clothing is essential (at least in our society) and there are so many careers available in the industry!

    woah i was really impressed by the similarities of my experience with yours, when i was in high school i was thinking of going to the same college as my brother for engineering (didn't even know for what, i didn't really like anything actually), but right after finishing high school my dad showed me this new college and they had a fashion design major, and it clicked for me bc i'd been creative since i was young and i was making clothes and stuff with fabric since forever but i didn't consider fashion as a career, so now i graduated last year and i have experience working with well-known local fashion brands so yeah, going for the "safe" path isn't always the only option and i'm glad that more people are realizing that being creative doesn't mean you're less serious than anyone else, especially young people that are taking these decisions about what to pursue and so, i loved this video and all of your channel too🖤

    I’ve always been torn between fashion and science major. In the end, I chose science and I kinda regret my decision. I’ve always had a bad health condition and my current major has been very challenging. I do not enjoy the classes except for algebra and calculus. I want to change my major but I’m just confused.

    I went through the same thing but I actually went to school for business and even worked corporate for a year and despised it. All my friends and family laughed at my dream to work in fashion too. Now I’m trying to get my foot in the door in fashion, it’s hard especially that I want to be creative and have no background in it. Your parents are amazing!

    Forget "You don't want to wake up in 30 years." I just finished a two-year degree in software development and started applying for jobs and realized I was trying for this job for ALL the wrong reasons. It was pulling teeth just to get applications in. I am older, did not incur any student debt, and have degrees in other fields that allow me to pivot pretty easily. I also have a husband commands a decent wage, so I can turn around and work 20 hours at a day job and spend off-days and evenings teaching myself tailoring techniques. I'm far from stuck. But what I see so often is people incurring massive amounts of student debt because they didn't second-guess their assumptions, sooner. And then they hit the real world, realize it's actually not in the cards, and *go back to school* (incurring more debt) because they don't know any other way to validate their career transition. And it's *so* heartbreaking to see.
    At the same time, I will say that if I had known in high school what I could actually *do* with science (the actual full range of options), I would probably be in experimental archaeology right now and be up to my eyeballs in textiles, regardless. I wish we could move beyond 'engineers' and see more of what creative, adventurous options there *are* in STEM. But of course, that would not be a socially respectable path, either. :7

    Hi Kiana, I just subscribed to your channel after watching some of your great vids. 😊 I am actually 42 and did my college experience starting in '96 ... I can't relate to everything today, obviously, but I can tell you that it's incredible hard to find yourself this early and young adults should not have this amount of pressure. It's hard enough just to live LOL. I tried everything to conform to my choice in college, but it just did not work out. Afterward I lost a lot of years to serious depression. The point is that now I'm middle-aged, I've come to realize that I just want to be myself, and that may be pretty off the wall! But maybe by expressing myself, I can help inspire someone else to do the same. This is a very precious freedom that few people realize. Even though I'm working in finances to pay the bills, learning to sew and express myself on the side brings true authenticity. Fashion is powerful. Culture has risen and fallen, wars have been fought, classes have been formed and discriminated against due to fashion. We can use fashion now to help save the world by being environmental and kind! Fashion also brings people together -- I continuously research clothing from other countries, learning about their cultures. You've helped inspire me as well as any high schooler who watches this. May your life journey be well and inspiring! Peace! ❤❤👌

It also brings me a lot of comfort to know that you went to a school in NC since I live in NC too. I'm currently a junior and it's so scary and hard to decide what I want to do. I am expected to go to a college and get a degree in business or something in STEM since I am good with numbers. However, since I was little I have always wanted to be a fashion designer and go to NY for school. I gave up the idea when I started to get older, but now its all coming back to the idea of being a fashion designer. I enjoy sewing and the whole construction process. I just don't know how to tell my parents or if they'll be supportive. Thank you so much for this. (Also I'm a big fan of your work btw)

    I knew that when I subscribed to your channel that I felt a connection. I recently went to university studying chemical engineering, and after 6 months I couldn’t cope. I was absolutely miserable. I also knew deep down that even though I was good at math and science in high school, engineering was not for me. It just become a standard answer when people would ask me about what I’m going to be studying. My parents would tell everyone that I’m going to be a chemical engineer, which just made the pressure that much more real. During that time in university my mental health was at an all time low, I didn’t want to talk to anyone or interact with my family. I was in such a dark place, but during these last few months I have found what my passions are and what makes me happy, even though I am gifted to be good at math and science, I love being creative. Your channel helped me realise this. To me your videos are an inspiration to me. I absolutely love what you do ❤

    Also, a tip for the insecure: you've probably heard of double majors, but you can also double- or even triple-minor in more pragmatic skillsets, which gives you something to go on in or fall back on. As someone who has done precisely that - you can apply for a graduate degree in something you've minored in. (And if you get into a PhD program, they're generally paying you money to focus on school.)

    i was really confuse when i was still thinking what i want to do. Then my grandpa who supports me about my artistic side he made a tour on his alma mater, for drafting but i got scared cause i always thought i suck at academic and afraid of math and science 😅😅 literally. Then my grandma was against it and want ne to take up HrM or tourism because it's practical, then my dad who supported me that time also agree to it. So i tried college for a year, since i have no choice and got really depressed and stress, i even left home for a day that my aunt didn't talk to me for a month because of it. I never rebel so that was the 1st time i ever done something bad. Because my dad and i got into a fight i started lossing it because i can't study anymore, my dad throw me out because of one absent, my aunt pick me up and offer me a part time job as an encoder, then i tried bpo so that i can save and get back to school, but since im not a fluent in English it was hard. Now that I've work in bpo for 4½ and it's starting to take toll on me, and i wanted to change career w/c something to do with arts, and i was thinking of Being a tailor, since i took up vocational in dressmaking before and when i was a kid i always like making clothes for my dolls and like to hand sew, i even grow up with another grandma who do tailoring too. But I'm still afraid if it will works out.
    I'm 27 and I'm still confuse with my life, and that scares me.

    That is exactly how I feel I’m great at math and science but my whole life I have LOVED fashion and I feel embarrassed when people ask what I’m gonna do when I grow up and I have to say I’m gonna be a fashion designer cuz they assume I’m going into a STEM field. I hate that I get embarrassed talking about what I love cuz as the bratz dolls used to say I have a passion for fashion but art majors are as respectable in the eyes of society as a “smart career”

    I also had the same case, but I eventually chose a career that will lead me to a “stable” life. Welp, it’s kinda okay but I bet it really feels good to learn something you love to really know about.
    Goodluck to all of us 🤗

    Thank you for sharing this! I have always had a huge interest in fashion like you do and I was was debating between business or fashion. I ended up choosing a 4 year college which had both options and I'm finishing up my first quarter, so I'm curious to see how my thoughts will change once my freshman year is over. Your videos have been very inspiring and fun to watch so keep it up 😊😊

      what college did you get into? i want to do fashion designing too but i don’t want to go to a fashion school, i want to go to a traditional college but it seems like most of them don’t have a fashion major

    Oh my gosh I relate to your experience as well! The main difference is that my parents conditioned me to become a doctor. In highschool everyone was applying to colleges in junior year and I had absolutely no idea what I was going to decide on. I hated when people asked me what I wanted to do because I felt like I would be judged. I applied to school to do something in the medical career but last minute made the switch to do fashion design. Unfortunately, the fashion schools/4 year schools in my location were very pricey. Even with the financial aid I had I wasn't going to be able to afford it. Ultimately I chose to learn fashion design on my own and pursue a major in animation (another love of mine) that way I can fall back on one thing if the other doesn't work out. I wanted to stay true to what I wanted to do. However, I'm aware that it isn't the most conventional career choices but it's what I'm passionate about. I have been experimenting with different things and hope to open an online shop for designs I make. I loved hearing your story!

    Thank you for this video, I just graduated in Australia and am in the same boat of deciding between something I love and the 'practical' choice. I was wondering if you knew much of other roles and jobs you can get in the fashion industry that isn't specifically designing? Schools don't really educate you in career pathways for fashion, so if you knew anything that would be great!

    • @KianaBonollo
      @KianaBonollo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Sure! With my particular degree, I feel like I could apply to jobs as a fashion designer, textile designer, technical designer, technical illustrator, fashion illustrator, sewing technician, trend forecaster, pattern maker, etc. On the more business fashion side you could become a visual merchandiser, sourcing agent, buyer, production manager, stylist, blogger, etc.

    Just a reminder, especially to those struggling to make a decision, that a lot of fashion does require maths and science (i.e. patterning) so don't sell yourself short and tell yourself you can't do fashion/design because "I'm good at maths and science so I have to go into engineering/medicine/etc." 🥰🥰🥰

    This reminds me of an ex of mine. He’s a biomechanical engineer and he loves his job, but he’s an amazing guitarist and I know he would have been happier being a guitarist in a band given the chance, but he thought it wouldn’t make him money. It sucks because I remember him always telling me he hated going to work and his engineering coworkers were so quiet and shy and never made conversation (a stereotype of engineers that was unfortunately true for his company). Had he pursued guitar or music as a major he would have probably joined a band and been with outgoing and fun people that he preferred to be around daily.

I am a junior and take ap classes, have had straight a’s my whole highschool career and have no idea what I want to be. I am leaning towards fashion design and have been wanting it for a long time but I’m also doubting if that’s actually a right for me. I’m so confused.

    i'm going into my junior year of highschool and i cannot, for the life of me, decide whether or not i want to go into fashion. i really love fashion, I'm extremely interested in it, and have been told that i supposedly have "the mind of a designer", but i'm not sure if i have what it takes to be one. i'm also considering being an english major, but once again, it's not very stable and idk if i really have what it takes. though being an english major could eventually lead into being a fashion journalist. help.

    I felt the same way! I was good at math and science so I did pre med, not because I wanted to but because my family told me to. I knew it wasn’t for me the first year and I felt awful. I had to beg my parents to let me move majors. I was always interested in the arts but my parents never wanted me to do that. So I am doing a double major on political science and criminal justice in order to be a lawyer. I don’t know if this is right for me but some times I wish I followed my passion.

    This is my same dilemma currently. I'm like, should I do sustainable engineering because it pays a lot and would help me reach my life goal or should I do anthropology because it genuinely interests me.
    For context, I really very much want to live on a plot of land somewhere with a small house I built out of sustainable materials and a small organic farm and be somewhat away from capitalist society. If I ever did need money I would use my sewing and woodworking skills to make stuff and extra crops to sell for money. But I know that in order to do that I need money to pay for the land and the building materials for the house. Sustainable engineering or something of the like would allow me to make a lot of money and learn things that I could apply to build my sustainable dream home/land. But engineering isn't something I like very much. I'm good at math but that doesn't mean I want to pursue a career in something related to it. I'm pretty good at non-chemistry science, but I hate it.
    I'm currently a junior, and even though I am one of the top students in my grade I'm thinking about going to a community college because it would allow me to explore my interests, whether that'd be in Textiles, Anthropology, Carpentry/Woodworking, or Sustainable Construction/Engineering/Agriculture.

    just discoverd your channel because im into doing my own clothes. i live in Brazil, high school is kinda different, we have three years and now in 2021 im going to the 2nd of 3 years of high school (cause school starts in february) and my family really wants me to go into med school cause i will be stable and i have many relatives that are in health area. but im passionate about journalism, writing my own stories, but this is not appreciated in Brazil and im going to be hungry and poor. im thinking about marketing and advertising or internacional relations. i don't know what i want to do my whole life because im 15, i don't want to choose that, it is a big decision to make, and all my possible majors (journalism, ir, marketing) don't relate with one another. thanks for this video, it gave me perspective. (sorry about my bad english, i live in a country that speaks portuguese and is a completely different language)

    Wait people ectually tell you that once you go to college that's the job you'll be doing for the rest of your life? That's such an immense pressure to put on a child. You're telling them that if they make a 'bad' decision they'll have to live with it for the rest of their life.
    Really glad your parents encouraged you to choose happiness!

    american universities confuse me so much ..."changing majors" sounds both baffling and the best thing ever. We go into uni 100% decided on which course we are studying. You apply to that specific course and stay put :') Sometimes you can switch to something related (ie biomed to biosci, or chem to chem engineer) in the first few weeks but after a month...you're stuck.
