Sounds like how we all reacted when Eversman in Blackhawk Down hit the strobe on the roof and the little birds started gun runs. The theatre was full of us from Ft. Sill and it went nuts when that happened.
Warlock always knew what Maverick was capable of. He and Iceman and the others of his generation has known Maverick for being the best pilot. He only sat and enjoyed the show.
When you stole a multi million plane just to demonstrate that you CAN do a (near) impossible mission, and then got yourself selected as team leader.... DAMN.

But as Commander Naval Air Forces, he's the overall head of all US Navy aviation. Commander Naval Air Forces is a type commander, which has all administrative and some operational control of their assets. So unless Cyclone's superiors specifically choose somebody else, Cyclone has the authority to allow Maverick on the mission.
@CornPop 2.0 I don't think Hangman ever really thought he was legit better than Maverick. He only showed that attitude towards the other topgun graduates. That "look of doubt" is more of a look towards Cyclone bc he was just changing the mission parameters to something much safer. And Hangman didn't like the idea as much as anyone else there so it seemed like he was thinking "ok, watch Maverick prove you wrong" kind of look.
This scene was amazing, I dunno about you, but every time he struggled to breath, I could literally feel it myself. It was such an aggressive flight, hard turns, no mistakes, fucking awesome!
A good way to show people why aircrafts need so many maintenance hours per flight hour. So much force acting on a frame that's light enough to stay in the air, with an engine that's trying to blow itself up.

A G-LIM OVRD caution is displayed and the MASTER CAUTION light and tone come on. A code is stored in the nose wheelwell DDI when the g limiter is overridden. 2:50...love, love, LOVE the quick shot from outside the plane of Maverick going inverted with the camera climbing parallel to him. I wish we got more of that angle. It might be my favorite single shot of the entire movie...and that's saying something. It's real, it's cinema.

That was no emulation. There’s a reason Cruise wanted the actors to be in actual Super Hornets. The visual effects of the G forces on the actors’ faces can not be simulated.
If this were real life that guy would not have 3 stars on his uniform. Equipment can be replaced, but you do not stay in any position of authority when you knowingly place your people in harms way. His boss (whoever was the 4 star) would NEVER have signed off on something that was a suicide mission for his pilots.
Watched it 4 times now… and this scene gets me every time … Maverick doing what he know HE can do… just not sure if the “Rookies” have actually got the balls - even when they know they’re the Best of the Best
The F-18 was derived from the Northrup F-17 which lost the Light Weight Fighter competition to the F-16. Northrup then worked with McDonnel Douglass to turn it into the F-18 for the Navy. The Navy was looking for a new attack plane to replace the A-7. But they could not decided if the F-18 was a fighter or attack plane so it became the F/A 18.
And the YF-17 was in turn derived from the F-5 so the Hornet is a super-evolution of the Tiger II. Also is not that they could not decide if the F-18 was a fighter or attack.. very early the idea was to make 2 variants.. F-18 as a light fighter to replace the Crusader and Phatom and an attack version A-18 to replace the A-7.. but quickly they figured they could make one model to do both jobd equaly in the same airframe and they branded it F/A-18 as a marketing trick. Similarly the F-22 was early designated F/A-22. They repeated the trick with the SuperHornet wich as its nearly an entirelly new aircraft it should been the F-24 but they designated it F-18E/F/G to make the idea that it was a low risk continuation of the same model with newer avionics

He did it faster. He lased his own target, fired, pulled ten gs and kept it based while almost passing out. Everything beyond what the mission called for so there was precisely zero doubt it was doable.
the only issue with his demonstration, was that it shouldn't of really helped his case. All it showed was he is capable of doing it which is good if it was a solo mission but the whole point was he needed 4 pilots capable of doing it, and they already showed they cant cut it in the training runs.
Wrong, it DID show it was possible for the other pilots because he did it 15 seconds sooner then the allowed time he gave the pilots, which means that if he can do it with an even more impossible time constraint, than the other pilots can do it with a little more time and with more training he could get them up to speed. It wasn't that the other pilots weren't capable, Maverick wanted to give them the extra time to train for the mission his way instead of giving it up to the naval instructor.
What he didn’t show was how his team was supposed to survive the insane amount of rockets they’d encounter once they climb, and the next gen fighter planes that might be in the area
There is actually a kind of contagion effect in some forms of high performance. Runners struggled to achieve the under 4 minute mile for a decade or two, but after Bannister did it his record stood for less than two months and the whole top tier of mile runners was able to do it within a few years. It was a case of one guy figuring out the correct amounts of speed and aerobic exertion and pain/stress to invest in each segment of the race, after that his competitors imitated his pacing and improved on it.
I love that everyone sits forward, and warlock sits back like, "Watch this shit boys and girls."

Agreed, my biggest problem was we didn't get nearly enough of those exterior shots or they didn't last long enough. So gorgeous.

My favorite part of the movie. What placed it over the top really was Tom Cruise ability to emulate the stress placed on the body. Brilliant.
I think some of those shots might have actually been taken in flight. That's not something you easily simulate otherwise.
