Fun fact: On 3-Ghost House, even if you weren't able to clear those stairs, a spinning blue shell can go up the un-switched slope unimpeded.

The section after the goomba pipe seems extremely sceptical with the pipe blocking momentum, being close enough to spawn it in, the speed needed and how high the next koopa is

Apparently it isn’t possible because towards the start of the level there’s a large gap with dotted coins and no blocks and paratroopas, so there’s that

I was hoping that it would be possible for a crazy kaizo mad lad like Ryukahr, PangaeaPanga, or GrandPooBear to officially beat the level backwards, but I guess all we can really do is see how far they can get. LOL, maybe if there are coins in the gap, they can use a P-switch.

Well that wouldn't make for much of a challenge video since those levels were designed to be played backwards. It's still pretty cool that they actually implemented that into the game!

Water running is only a thing in the newer new super mario bros games, not the first one.
Kiwi Enterprises it actually is a thing in the game. Nintendo tries to show it off with a star coin at the beginning. The only new perk with the mini mushroom in the newer games is you can run up and down walls. Sorry if I sound rude.

7-1 is actually possible. In 100% speedruns of this game, we jump off a flame chomp 3 times with a mini shroom to navigate back to the beginning of the 2nd room. It's a bit precise, but not too difficult.

I never saw the Flame Chomp spawn? Perhaps I just missed it, but it could be an issue where I have to access the beginning of the level for it to show up

I could be mistaken since I haven’t played the game in years but in the room where the run ended the p-switch raises the water to the top. This is the part that I’m really iffy on but many of the Mario games won’t allow you to walk into the pipe if there’s no ground in front. But most of them do let you swim into them that way.
Nathaniel Bandy, thank you! This was my favourite series of yours and it was funny seeing you do games like Sunshine and Odyssey. What Makes this series even better is that it has endless possibilities like the other 3d/2d Mario games or even other racing games like Crash Team Racing or Sonic and All Stars Racing Transformed. It also works out better for you because your challenge videos are some of the most popular on your channel.
If this is supposed to be a backward challenge then you should be able to start the game from world 8 and end it in world 1

For 8-2, might it be possible to use a mini mushroom to run on water and, while the water is decreasing, run into the pipe when the water is at the right elevation?
Edit: So I've been trying it for a little bit now, and I think it is theoretically possible. I don't have the backwards mod so if it worked I wouldn't know, but I've made it to the pipe while running on water as mini Mario. The timing is pretty precise as you need to be running to have enough speed to be able to get passed the ledge when the water descends.

4:10 you actually CAN enter horizontal pipes with no floor beneath them with the mini mushroom th-cam.com/video/44NR93PRTZE/w-d-xo.html this is because of a fake floor glitch where if you hit the right spot on a wall you can briefly stand there with mini (which is why sometimes you can jump in a wall with mini). I've tried both the 8-2 and 7-4 pipes and managed to get the fake floor glitch but not enter either of them, so maybe they are programmed to not be entered backwards.

Oh wow that's pretty cool! I was talking to the guy that modded the game to make this playable backwards, and he said you couldn't enter pipes without the ground so I had no idea you could do this
3-GhostHouse could have been easily cleared with the blue shell sliding up the slopes (see only blue shell run of this game)

8-5 is actually possible believe it or not. if you grab a mega mushroom you can push the pipe that you cant enter far back enough to a point where you actually can enter the pipe
Edit: i just remembered the pipe that you enter to even play the level is too far up, so never mind
Levels that could have been possible:
2-3 (forgot about the secret exit, since alternate paths aren’t edited)
2-A (not if you start at the normal exit, but if you start from the alternate exit instead)
7-Ghost House (not if you start at the normal exit, but if you start from the alternate exit instead)
7-3 (maybe if a New Super Mario Bros. expert could TAS this level, as NB mentioned, if not possible, at least this will prove how far you can possibly get)
7-4 (not if you start at the normal exit, but if you start from the alternate exit instead)
8-5 (you can actually counter the pipe problem this time! Use a Mega Mushroom and push the pipe. It works and there is barely enough ground afterwards to enter the pipe)
8-7 (maybe try this using Mini Mario and a Green Koopa that’s at the beginning (normally at the end) to see if you can make it)
8-Mid Castle 2 (oh come on, this one isn’t even that hard. If you didn’t have the item pocket, then yeah, this one probably wouldn’t be possible, but you can just have a spare item to get through the spikes. It’s that simple)

From what I remember, the water fills up when pressing that switch in the World 8 level. Once you're underwater, you should be able to enter that pipe.

i really love your new super mario bros videos, since i grew up on a farm with a nintendo dsi as my only way to have fun, my favourite was always new super mario bros,
you should do like, a *mega* "is it possible" episode where you combine different challenges. for example...
- is it possible to beat (mario game) with mini-mushroom, touching no/ every coin?
- is it possible to beat (mario game) with your feet, touching no/every coin?
- is it possible to beat (mario game) with mini-mushroom, with your feet?
- etc. etc.
maybe for a subscriber milestone or something?
The last 2 challenges you mentioned are possible but hard and annoying.

I played this game SO MUCH as a kid I can honestly say it’s my favorite 2-D Mario game
Couldn't you technically randomize/remix the game so that you actually start at the final level of the game and work your way down? For a bonus challenge you could either remove warp cannons, or have a mod that invert where they land. (Example: the world 1 cannon to world 5 in NSMBW starts at world 5 and goes all the way to world 1)
I really wanted this series to come out. Also it looks like quarantine is hitting you good.
